The seminar Re-public Jewellery will be held at Galerie Handwerk Friday 13 March. Four international speakers will analyze different aspects of social potential in contemporary jewellery: Liesbet Bussche (B), Helen Carnac (GB), Nanna Melland (N), Yuka Oyama (N/D). The seminar is produced by Martina Kaufmann, Prof. Ingjerd Hanevold and Prof. Anders Ljungberg at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Metal and Jewellery Department in collaboration with The National Museum of Art, Design and Architecture and the Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts.
The presentations made in this seminar will moderated by Sofia Bjørkmann and Prof. Anders Ljungberg. Together with the speakers and the panel-participants they will investigate strategies to convey and communicate jewellery art in public space.

From the Coolest Corner: Nordic Jewellery presents an exciting and broad range of the contemporary studio jewellery created in the Nordic countries. From the Coolest Corner: Nordic Jewellery has a three-fold aim: to present the newest and most advanced contemporary Nordic jewellery, to intensify the discourse on today’s jewellery and strengthen the knowledge about this field, and to consolidate Nordic jewellery’s position in national and international arenas.
Jewellery will be presented in 3 different ways: a touring exhibition, a comprehensive book and an international Seminar Re-Public Jewellery, all shedding new light on the importance of this art. Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden will be the main collaborators in this project.
The touring exhibition From the Coolest Corner was opened at The National Museum – The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Oslo in January 2013. It then travelled to The DesignMuseum Finland in Helsinki, The Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, The Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design in Tallin, The Röhsska Museum of Design and Applied Arts in Gothenburg and The Lithuanian Art Museum in Vilnius.
During “Schmuck 2015” it is shown at the Galerie Handwerk in Munich.
This main exhibition presents 159 works by 61 artists from the Nordic countries including five invited honorary artists and a selected group of artists from Estonia.
The international seminar Re-Public Jewellery will take place on March 13th at the Galerie Handwerk, 10:00-15:00.
To strengthen the interest in and knowledge of art jewellery, artistic tendencies and research within the field will be presented both in the seminar and in the book.
All these different presentations of Nordic studio jewellery together, aim at contributing to reinforce the image of contemporary Nordic Jewellery as expressive, reflexive and “cool”.
The project is a result of a cooperation between the three Norwegian partners (The National Museum –The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Oslo, The Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts and Oslo National Academy of the Arts) and their associated organizers in the Nordic museums of design and decorative arts, the Nordic crafts associations and the national colleges of art and design as well as, of course, our sponsors Nordic Culture Point, Nordic Culture Fund, Arts Council Norway.

« Every day I’ve been working on the routines and rituals of everyday life. The system of repeats and symbols that we inhabit and need. I’m always collecting things I come into contact with – things that say something to me.
The project is reminiscent of archaeology. It’s a sort of contemporary archaeology. Instead of exploring a different age I try through my findings to find out what’s happening here and now. Just as notes form a pattern and a history for things. That’s what I use as my basis when I make my jewellery.
I watch the ground.
I have used the bike that is drawn on the streets. On my way again and again.
In the necklace I have used pieces of iron connected with rubber rings to form a chain. It is reminiscent of a bike chain and the bike is travelling around the body on its own chain.
With the same materials I have made broader and bigger necklaces. Protection.
Street stones. Letters. Signs.
If you look. Small codes everywhere.

Yunju Lee‘s precious stains…  “The worthless and unpleasant stain that we find in our daily life can be transformed into the most valuable and fascinating jewellery. Jewellery is not always extraordinary, but it is an object tht we can learn in our daily life”

Yunju Lee is a recent graduate from the jewelery program at london’s central st. martins. her works takes a decidedly opposite perspective to the idea of beauty in jewelery. instead of diamonds and gems, lee crafts brooches that look like stains from ketchup or a woman’s lips. other pieces include a nose ring that has a milk moustache hanging below and ring with a household iron pattern. while the subject in her work is commonplace and unconventional, she executes them in more traditional silver, gold and enamel. Small every day life mishaps are her starting point of creation. Her exquisite jewellery and the collection, which was about “worthless and unpleasant stains, which we find in our everyday lives”, were transformed into precious jewellery. A set of ketchup dribbles stain to be worn on your tie, black enameled sterling silver ink stains to pin on your shirt or a cheeky lipstick trace set on a solid gold collar. Jewelry in a New Iron Age by 60 International Artists

FERROUS, an exhibition of jewelry using iron, steel, and steel alloys. Although the use of iron dates back more than two thousand years, this humble material is more commonly used for agriculture and industrial purposes than adornment. A significant exception is the Berlin Iron Jewelry of the early 19th century. The Prussian Royal family funded the uprising against Napoleon by encouraging wealthy citizens to exchange their precious gold and silver for intricately fabricated iron jewelry.Intricacy is just one aspect the 60 artists of FERROUS explore with this versatile material. Known for its strength and lightness, the steel and iron jewelry of FERROUS is both rusty and shiny, sheet and wire, bejeweled and modest. The exhibition will take place simultaneously at Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco and as a virtual exhibition at crafthaus online. In May FERROUS will travel to 18Karat Gallery in Toronto, Canada as part of The Society of North American Goldsmith’s annual conference.
