Snapshot - REVERSO

Snapshot – photography project with Diana Laires:
Words cannot say much about jewellery. You have to see, feel and wear the pieces on the body. You have to live with them. Only then, the pleasure of the thought and made, of the formulated and fabulated with ideas, desires and matters, can irradiate fascination.
What should remain is the joy and the desire to understand and wear these pieces of jewellery as symbols of your own personality. /Jens-Rudiger Lorenzen (adapted) in Contemporary Jewelry, Stuttgart, 1989

Prix européen des Arts Appliqués

European Prize for Applied Arts

Friday 23 October 2015: opening ceremony and Prize awarding Master Prize and Young Talent Prize and Mons 2015 Prize At the Grand Hall of the « Anciens Abattoirs » of Mons Exhibition from 24 October 2015 until 10 January 2016

From the Coolest Corner: Nordic Jewellery presents an exciting and broad range of the contemporary studio jewellery created in the Nordic countries. From the Coolest Corner: Nordic Jewellery has a three-fold aim: to present the newest and most advanced contemporary Nordic jewellery, to intensify the discourse on today’s jewellery and strengthen the knowledge about this field, and to consolidate Nordic jewellery’s position in national and international arenas.
Jewellery will be presented in 3 different ways: a touring exhibition, a comprehensive book and an international Seminar Re-Public Jewellery, all shedding new light on the importance of this art. Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden will be the main collaborators in this project.
The touring exhibition From the Coolest Corner was opened at The National Museum – The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Oslo in January 2013. It then travelled to The DesignMuseum Finland in Helsinki, The Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, The Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design in Tallin, The Röhsska Museum of Design and Applied Arts in Gothenburg and The Lithuanian Art Museum in Vilnius.
During “Schmuck 2015” it is shown at the Galerie Handwerk in Munich.
This main exhibition presents 159 works by 61 artists from the Nordic countries including five invited honorary artists and a selected group of artists from Estonia.
The international seminar Re-Public Jewellery will take place on March 13th at the Galerie Handwerk, 10:00-15:00.
To strengthen the interest in and knowledge of art jewellery, artistic tendencies and research within the field will be presented both in the seminar and in the book.
All these different presentations of Nordic studio jewellery together, aim at contributing to reinforce the image of contemporary Nordic Jewellery as expressive, reflexive and “cool”.
The project is a result of a cooperation between the three Norwegian partners (The National Museum –The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Oslo, The Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts and Oslo National Academy of the Arts) and their associated organizers in the Nordic museums of design and decorative arts, the Nordic crafts associations and the national colleges of art and design as well as, of course, our sponsors Nordic Culture Point, Nordic Culture Fund, Arts Council Norway.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Nordic Culture Point, the Nordic Culture Fund, the Arts Council Norway and Galerie Handwerk of the Bavarian Chamber of Crafts

The SCHMUCK is an international exhibition that has been taking place in Munich for more than 50 years. It combines works of established artists and promising newcomers in the area of contemporary jewellery design and is the meeting place for collectors, jewellery lovers and museum curators from Germany and abroad. Organized as a worldwide contest, the works are chosen by an internationally renowned curator each year, this time by Eva Eisler, professor at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (AAAD). “Presenting works at the SCHMUCK is an honor for any jewellery designer“, says Dieter Dohr, Management Board Chairman of the GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH. That is also why this time, more than 600 gold smiths and jewellery designers from Germany and abroad applied for the special show. In spring 2015, contributions by 63 artists from 21 countries will finally be on display. This time, Karel Novak from the Czech Republic will be honored as the classic of modern art. Highlight of the SCHMUCK will be the awarding of the Herbert-Hofmann-prizes on Saturday, 14 March 2015 at 5 pm on stage in hall B1. On this day, a jury will select the three best works of the SCHMUCK. Each year, a number of accompanying events group around the special show at the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich galleries, museums and cultural institutes.

«  »Jewellery » is a word that can give anyone a concrete image in a moment, though it is associated with so many different sorts of work.
The word itself is so common that no one seems to pay attention anymore.
And there could be a gap between my work and what people usually recognize as jewellery…
One day I found one precious name in danish which better describes,
what I experience in the process of making
« klenodie »
treasure, gem, jewel …just a small thing,
but it always makes me feel warm. »

« Handmade Enamel Treasures by Kaori Juzu
I love it when craft can pull through and show its face in a number of different realms. Often you see this in galleries, where an artist creates using handiwork that might be considered craft. But they don’t use the material for functional purposes, mainly for expression and to build on a concept or idea. If there’s someone who sits in this murky area it would be artist Kaori Juzu. Born in Fukuoka, Japan she moved to Bornholm in Denmark to study art, where she then founded a small line of jewellery. After training with well-known Danish jewellery designer Per Suntum, Kaori set up her own studio producing experimental brooches.
Kaori crafts by hand what she now calls ‘klenodie’. This title is a Danish word for artefact, gem, jewel, or treasure, encapsulating her pieces under this wide spectrum. She uses a mixture of copper, silver, and gold depending on the idea at hand. The metal is carefully hammered and sculpted in to shape, after a mixture of enamels (powdered glass) are applied to the metal which react in the kiln at high temperature creating a unique colour pattern and surface texture. Her forms and compositions are quite exquisite, they remind me of abstract objects carefully arranged on a canvas, the only twist is that they’re actually made of metal and are at a smaller scale. It’s fantastic to see such experimentation.
The more I explore as a creative the less I’m worried about the particular medium used. It’s more impressive to see a creative use a multitude of materials to bring an idea in to fruition, overstepping the boundaries as it were. I’m intrigued by Kaori’s work and can’t wait to see more from her in the near future, if you have time I’d recommend watching this video piece (see above) on how she produces these objects and what inspires her. » (An introduction by Mark Robinson at OEN – the189.com)

The Slavik Gallery is starting its new cycle of exhibitions with a display of unique jewellery by international artists whose arresting creations never fail to impress.
The dynamic, technologically inspired brooches of Ramon Puig Cuyàs, Professor at the famous Escola Massana in Barcelona, catch the eye with architectural elements and a striking use of colour.
Silvia Walz also teaches at the Massana school. Her imaginative and smilingly colourful enamel bangles are bursting with energy and joie de vivre.
Mirjam Hiller makes jewellery out of sheet stainless steel or copper, which is sawn, folded and bent into shape to form little art works that are unique. The artist herself: « The piece of jewellery must be irresistible to the eye. It must hold me spellbound and touch my senses. Unique, exotic and beautiful, it should awake one’s curiosity and yet still be a little familiar. »
As the Japanese jewellery artist Kaori Juzu lives and works in Denmark, her creations are influenced by two quite different cultures. Her many-coloured « enamel jewellery treasures » tell stories of mysterious and unknown worlds.
In the golden jewellery objects of the German artist Alexandra Brachtendorf the gilding is done on a ground of rough forged iron, creating lively surface structures that are rich in shine and shadow.

NO_Talbot_rajattu
(Anna Talbot  work)

This joint exhibition presents the best work in contemporary Nordic jewellery design. The exhibits consist of 159 pieces of jewellery by 61 Nordic designers, also featured a group of Estonian jewellery designers. The exhibition aims to present a broad overview of contemporary Nordic jewellery, generate dialogue and to provide more information on the national and international status of contemporary jewellery.

Nordic jewellery thrives and interests audiences. This is the shared view of the producers of this touring exhibition. Its message is that Nordic jewellery is experimental, bold, expressive – and cool.

Designers from the Nordic countries and Estonia were asked to send samples of their work to the touring exhibition’s five-member jury. The members of the jury were Liesbet den Besten of the Netherlands, Widar Halén of Norway, Love Jönsson of Sweden, Päivi Ruutiainen of Finland and Jorunn Veiteberg of Denmark.

The exhibition at Design Museum contains work by the following jewellery designers, among others: Kim Buck (DK) –  Julie Bach (DK) –  Kaori Juzu (DK) –  Marie-Louise Kristensen (DK) –  Maarja Niinemägi (EE) –  Kristi Paap (EE) –  Janna Syväoja (FI) –  Anna Rikkinen (FI) –  Janne Hirvonen (FI) –  Helena Lehtinen (FI) –  Aino Favén (FI) –  Clarice Finell (FI) –  Mirja March (FI) –  Hulda B. EXPO ‘From the Coolest Corner’ – Designmuseum Danmark, Copenhagen (DK) – 28 Juin-15 Sept. 2013

From the Coolest Corner – Designmuseum Danmark

The touring exhibition ‘From the Coolest Corner – Nordic Jewellery’ comes to Designmuseum Danmark from Oslo and next stop is Helsinki, Tallinn, Gothenburg and Munich. A publication accompanies the exhibition. The opening is June 28, and alongside the opening at Designmuseum Danmark, the Copenhagen Jewelry Triennial is filling the city with exciting jewelry exhibitions.

From the Coolest Corner - Designmuseum Danmark (Copenhagen, Denmark) 28-Jun-2013 - 15-Sep-2013 website: designmuseum.dk mail: info@designmuseum.dk [Kim Buck Rings: Pumpous 2011]Kim Buck  Rings: Pumpous 2011

A large comprehensive exhibition shows what is happening on the Nordic jewellery scene in 2013. In light of the two successful exhibitions, shown in 1995 and 2001, Designmuseum Danmark has collaborated with Röhsska Museet in Gothenburg, The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design and Design Museum Helsinki to create a traveling exhibition that shows a large number of works, all created specifically for this occasion. An international jury has selected all the works and few are hand picked as guests of honour – including Kim Buck from Denmark.

It is not often, that jewellery is what comes to mind, when the citizens of Copenhagen pass by graffiti painted park benches and trash bins in the streets. But in the exhibition ‘From the Coolest Corner – Nordic Jewellery’ at Designmuseum Danmark a park bench and a trash bin is exactly what can be seen as brooches, birch wood trunks have been transformed into rings and metal wire has become pendants.

The exhibition shows selected jewellery from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Estonia and you can expect to see anything but traditional jewellery. The artists have in their own way reflected on and challenged the genre as well as the stereotype ideas of Nordic jewellery. The exhibition questions whether it is still possible to talk about a typical Nordic trend as it has been earlier or if the international orientation nowadays is so strong, that we no longer see any regional characteristics.

A jury has selected 61 artists to participate in the exhibition including five honorary artists.
Denmark is represented by 7 artists:  Josephine Winther, Thorkild Harboe Thøgersen, Marie-Louise Kristensen, Kaori Juzu, Annette Dam, Julie Bach and the guest of honour Kim Buck.

Kim Buck’s works are characterised by a fond but critical attitude towards the varied creations of the jewellery industry. As in the series Bonsai, this sometimes results in jewellery that cannot be worn but serves instead as objects for contemplation. Bonsai, which is among Buck’s contributions to the exhibition, consists of five blocks of birch wood made into rings.

Where Kim Buck’s work is often inspired by traditional forms of jewellery, Marie-Louise Kristensen has instead been inspired by everyday objects. With an ironic subtitle she has created brooches for the exhibition in shape of for instance a park bench, a trash bin and scaffolding – images that most of Designmuseum Danmark’s visitors will recognise from the streets of Copenhagen.

EXPO ‘Dialogue’ – Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h, Montréal (Québec, Canada) – 5-28 April, 2013

Dialogue: International Exhibition Contemporary Jewellery by Emerging Artists
