EXPO ‘Cluster’ – The Dowse, Lower Hutt (New Zealand) – 11 Fevr.-13 Mai 2012

Cluster presents work by ten contemporary New Zealand jewellers collected by The Dowse over the last ten years.

Lisa Walker, Karl Fritsch, Kirsten Haydon, Joanna Campbell, Jacqui Chan, Anna Wallis, Lynn Kelly, Jason Hall, Ann Visser Cox and Pauline Bern use a diverse range of materials as they challenge traditional notions of body adornment. The exhibition showcases the evolution of contemporary jewellery practice during that past decade and presents a wide range of object making. Unbounded by the traditions of jewellery and its conventional association with precious materials, wearability and the relationship to the body, these artists forge new directions in their work.

Ten artists, including the most significant in the international arena, are witnesses to a new address at the end of the twentieth century figurative formulas for the liberating effect of the postmodern movement and which has grown in the last decade with extreme views, neo-baroque, neo-Manierist and neo-Symbolist.
The new imagery is rampant blending truth and fiction, memory and its deformation, the accuracy and vagueness, the horror and pleasure, eroticism and pornography, the myth and mysticism, humor and sarcasm : is the culture of kitsch.
The term improperly used to disparaging assessments by the great German bookish Hermann Broch, who quoted him in his famous text of 1933 and, later, the shooting in writing in 1950-1951, assumed negative meaning in the dialectic of confrontation classical values to those of post-Romanticism imbued with a culture symbolist aesthetic, decadent that dominated the late nineteenth century. Not inferior art, then, but the sublime beauty of art in all its excesses even the most perverse, sacrifice the values of harmony and balance.
Contemporary art aestheticism return records that enriched experiences and meanings of philosophical, psychoanalytical and social developed during the twentieth century. (Graziella Folchini Grassetto)

EXPO ‘Lisa Walker, new work / Karl Fritsch, rings and dishes’ – Galerie RA – 15 Oct.–26 Nov. 2011

Lisa Walker, new work  -  Karl Fritsch, rings and dishes

Lisa Walker is the enfant terrible among contemporary jewellery makers. She explores the boundaries of what is expected, accepted and wearable, in response to her environment and what is happening in the world. For this she uses waste materials from our consumer society without, however, making any moral statement about this.

Karl Fritsch is best known for his rings but has recently added an exciting new dimension to his work in the form of gold or silver dishes, each 500 g or a kilo in weight. The silver dishes can now be seen in Galerie Ra, while the gold examples will be on show at the Collect Fair in London in May 2012.

THE RING – the most common piece of jewellery can be full of meaning, a personal statement sometimes showing itself as a technical miracle or purely decorative and beautiful. It can demand attention, be an invitation to play, be filled with tears and secrets – and is to be worn for one day or for ever.
In homage to the ring Galleri Hnoss has invited all the jewellery artists exhibited in the gallery since the start in 1997 to produce one ring each. The result is now to be seen in the exhibition THE RING – jewel forever. The show consisting of over one hundred rings is a vibrant collection of different expressions, thoughts and forms

We are very proud to announce the speakers: Anna Schetelich from Galerie Oona, Germany, Professor Otto Kunzli, Germany, and Manuel Vilhena, jewellery artist from Portugal. Workshop : Helena Lehtinen: Cameo
Cameo is a traditional piece of jewellery which has its origins in seals.
During history it has been in and out of fashion in courts in Europe. Nowdays it is usually a red-white silhuet of a lady, most often worn by eldery ladies.
Reflecting to what this classical piece of jewellery has been in the past, students will search cameo´s meaning today.
What it has been, what it could be? Is there any significancy left, what it could present in today´s society / to today´s people?
 What is your cameo?
With new materials and way of working students will create new traditions in cameos.
Working with stone is possible in the workshop.
Lead by jewellery artist Helena Lehtinen,
 assistant Tarja Tuupanen

Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

Wendy Ramshaw und David Watkins © Artists

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

Karl Fritsch: Scenes from the Munich Diamond Disaster

3636 1038WebsiteBanner899x319pixFA

An installation by German jeweller Karl Fritsch, where we encounter the exquisite rings in the midst of a ‘scene’ created by the artist. Fritsch is widely known for his brilliantly irreverent handling of precious materials; here his craftsmanship is evident both in the minute detail of the jewellery, and in the curious spatial arrangement of the exhibition and its furniture. This is not how you expect to see precious objects displayed; it’s like meeting jewellery afterhours, off-duty.
Karl likes to treat his jewellery like plasticine. His pieces remain unfinished until they are worn. He endeavours to expand the idea of what jewellery might be, throwing off kilter conventional ideas about value, wearablity, and what is beautiful. Breaking most of the rules of goldsmithing—marrying precious with cheap, making new pieces from discarded jewellery, gluing uncut gemstones together, and fusing kitchen appliances with exquisite rings—Fritsch’s work declares war on the commonplace.
This exhibition shows an extraordinary artist at work on both micro and macroscopic levels: in the minute rings, and with the room at large. These are gems that refuse to be just beautiful; they jostle with real life and what it means to be precious, to be worn and to be loved. They create a scene, and revel in it.

EXPO 'Karl Fritsch: Scenes from the Munich Diamond Disaster' - Hirschfeld Gallery, Wellington (NZ) - 26Nov. 2010-16 janv. 2011 dans Exposition/Exhibition 76052_463635679619_129445984619_5681540_2901331_n

The spectacularly titled exhibition Scenes from the Munich Diamond Disaster (26 November 2010–16 January 2011) will present hundreds of Fritsch’s hand-crafted rings, selected from across a fifteen year period of the artist’s practice.
These rings are constructed from a startling array of precious metals and gemstones—gold, rubies, sapphires, silver, diamonds and emeralds—which are precariously piled on top of one another, pressed into roughly formed settings, pierced, unpolished, oxidised, or inserted into the eyes of small skulls.
Fritsch has written, “At some point I would like to use gold in the same way as plasticine”. This intention is evident in Scenes from the Munich Diamond Disaster, which demonstrates Fritsch’s irreverent use of costly materials. In his work jewels are often stabbed through the centre by a nail, or a piece of gold is paired with common iron or stone.
As inventive as the works themselves is the ‘scene’ that Fritsch has created within the Hirschfeld Gallery. His rings are presented in colourful plasticine moulds inside sleek display cases. The vitrines themselves are propped on raw timber chocks, suggesting the appearance of a construction site or a gallery space during installation. Unlike the austere surfaces on which jewellery is usually displayed, here Fritsch’s rings are deliberately staged in a provisional, apparently haphazard environment.
Karl Fritsch (b.1963 in Sonthofen, Germany) studied at the Goldsmiths’ College in Pforzheim and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He was the recipient of the Herbert Hoffman Prize from the International Craftsmen Trade Fair in Munich and the Most Promising Award for Applied Art from the City of Munich. Fritsch’s work is included in several important European museums such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (Museum of Art and Crafts) in Hamburg. He now lives in Island Bay, Wellington and is represented by Hamish McKay Gallery.

EXPO ‘LINGAM’ – Galerie du WCC-BF, Mons (Belgique) – 8 mai-22 aout 2010
