Schmuck Event-Programm 2015

This year 63 artists have been selected from 23 different countries and this year Modern Classic is Karel Novak from Czeck Republic. Have an overview of the selected works as well as last year awarded artists. This special exhibition is the eldest exhibition of contemporary jewellery work in the world. It takes place since 1959 every year during the International Trade Fair in March

The SCHMUCK is an international exhibition that has been taking place in Munich for more than 50 years. It combines works of established artists and promising newcomers in the area of contemporary jewellery design and is the meeting place for collectors, jewellery lovers and museum curators from Germany and abroad. Organized as a worldwide contest, the works are chosen by an internationally renowned curator each year, this time by Eva Eisler, professor at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (AAAD). “Presenting works at the SCHMUCK is an honor for any jewellery designer“, says Dieter Dohr, Management Board Chairman of the GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH. That is also why this time, more than 600 gold smiths and jewellery designers from Germany and abroad applied for the special show. In spring 2015, contributions by 63 artists from 21 countries will finally be on display. This time, Karel Novak from the Czech Republic will be honored as the classic of modern art. Highlight of the SCHMUCK will be the awarding of the Herbert-Hofmann-prizes on Saturday, 14 March 2015 at 5 pm on stage in hall B1. On this day, a jury will select the three best works of the SCHMUCK. Each year, a number of accompanying events group around the special show at the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich galleries, museums and cultural institutes.

This special exhibition is the eldest exhibition of contemporary jewellery work in the world. It takes place since 1959 every year during the International Trade Fair in March. Except the transport cost until Munich the participation in the special show is free of charge for you. Three contributions of Schmuck 2013 will be awarded with the Herbert Hofmann Prize. The prize commemorates Dr. Herbert Hofmann, the founder of the special show in 1959. In addition the jury of the Bavarian States Prize will look at the works in the special show. The Bavarian States Prize is awarded to 10 contri-bution of applied art within all contribution of the International Trade Fair. This prize is awarded with 5.000€.

More than 552 goldsmiths from 43 countries around the globe applied to participate in the special “Schmuck” (Jewellery) show at the International Crafts Fair in Munich next year. This great interest once again confirms the importance of this event in the context of contemporary jewellery-making and the significance attached to it worldwide. An above-average number of applications were received this year from Australia, Japan and Taiwan, but also from New Zealand and Argentina, the latter having been among the applicants for only a few years now. The selection for 2014 was made especially interesting thanks to the many new exhibitors nominated by the curator Jorunn Veiteberg of Copenhagen. Unusually, “Jewellery 2014” features over 25 new exhibitors, who will be represented in this renowned exhibition for the first time.

For the year 2014, a total of 66 participants from 25 nations were invited to exhibit. Numerically most strongly represented are goldsmiths from Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Denmark and Sweden. The applicants grow younger by the year, an indicator that even before or immediately after finishing their training goldsmiths seek to compete in our special show, present their work to an interested public, experts, gallery owners and museum curators, and rapidly find their way into the jewellery avant-garde. “Jewellery” is an important venue for making a name for oneself in international goldsmiths’ circles, establishing contacts, and not least, witnessing the award of the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize on Saturday.

The special “Jewellery” show is characterized by the choice of certain themes which, in the eyes of curator Jorunn Veiteberg, represent salient traits of current jewellery design. As signs of our times and selection criteria, she sees found objects of metal or wood, things that bear definite marks of use, materials that speak an expressive, earthy language, forms and structures reminiscent of architecture, as well as masks, a tendency to mysticism, and forceful color schemes.

Honored as next year’s Modern Classic will be Dorothea Prühl, a goldsmith who lives in Halle. A teacher at Burg Giebichenstein Art College, she not only helped shape an entire generation of young goldsmiths but, over and above her teaching activity, has created an admirable, original oeuvre that holds a very special place within contemporary jewellery design.

Curator of “Jewellery 2014” is Jorunn Veiteberg, a Norwegian art historian who lives in Copenhagen. An arts journalist and exhibition curator, Veiteberg has taught since 2002 at the National Academy in Bergen, Norway. Since 2013 she has been guest professor at the University of Göteborg, Sweden, and chairwoman of the Norwegian Crafts Association. She has published in the fields of contemporary jewellery and ceramics. Veiteberg says it was a great honor for her to make the selection for “Jewellery 2014.” She was especially impressed by the quality of the submissions and their international range. For her as a Scandinavian, it was an enriching experience to see so many submissions from South Korea, Japan, Argentina, the U.S., and many other countries from around the world.

The Handwerkskammer organizes the special shows Exempla, Talente, Modern Masters and Schmuck at the International Handwerksmesse München with the Herbert-Hofmann-Award 2014 ceremony on Saturday 15th March at 4 p.m. We will show in our Galerie Handwerk the exhibition WUNDERRUMA – Jewellery from New Zealand.

Detritus

Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) is pleased to present Detritus, on view November 15, 2013 – January 26, 2014, in the Artist Hall. With material investigation as the foundation of their practices, artists Kat Cole, Laritza Garcia, Tara Locklear and Chesley Williams have constructed objects of adornment that employ found elements, remnants of industrial products, and other alternative non-precious materials that carry meaning and hint at a purpose. By observing their environments and taking up the practice of collecting, these artists have created inspiring jewelry and headwear that contain a gritty richness reminiscent of urban and industrial landscapes. Incorporating detritus and evidence of human inhabitance, the works possess an artifact-like quality that not only presents a reinterpretation and re-contextualization of ubiquitous materials but also allows the viewer to consider what the source materials reveal about contemporary society.

In line with the concept-driven field of contemporary jewelry, in which the use of materials, skills and compositions are applied to explore ideas, Kat Cole’s work and methodology are a means for her to actualize a connection to her surroundings. Cole has lived in eight different states over the past 10 years, adjusting to and appreciating the diverse natural, industrial, and cultural landscapes of each location. Through the examination of architecture, industrial structures, and their inherent histories, along with scouting for objects to incorporate into her jewelry, she actively seeks out personal and tangible ways to link each art object to its place of origin.

Raised in the South Texas Border region, where the influence of a vibrant Mexican culture is pervasive, jeweler Laritza Garcia’s work is inspired by her attraction to the physical presence of color in the world around her. The brilliant oranges, blues and pinks that cover facades of buildings in this locale are palpable in her expressive color pallet. With a desire to convert two-dimensional graphics into wearable configurations, Garcia begins her process by creating loose gestural illustrations from inks and calligraphy brushes.  From there, she layers bold colors and graphic lines evocative of street art and graffiti and, with an understanding of the mood-elevating effects of color, she creates jewelry to bring a sense of whimsy to the landscape of the body.

Asking her viewers to reevaluate their conventional notions of preciousness and value, Tara Locklear incorporates everyday materials, such as wood, concrete, and glass, into her jewelry.  She also repurposes fragments of skateboard decks in some of her pieces. The incorporation of this unique material was inspired by a community of friends with a reverence for the urban sport and a desire to give the decks, laced with sentimental value, new life. The colors and graphics of the boards spark a vision of a skateboarder’s utopia, a concrete jungle filled with vivid and eye-catching graphics. Locklear’s exploration of traditional jewelry forms and her affinity for costume jewelry of the 1940s and ‘50s serve as inspiration for the visual format used to illustrate her concepts.

The accumulation and transformation of mundane objects is a fundamental component of Chesley Williams’ artistic practice of creating innovative headwear. With the D. I. Y. (Do-It-Yourself) social movement and high fashion as inspiration, Williams creates works of art that push the boundaries of traditional design with her use of materials and techniques. Her process begins with the accumulation of materials—from donations, recycling centers and thrift stores—which are then transformed into raw materials through deconstruction. Clustering, grouping and building with these materials, she creates sculptural forms that serve as bold and beautiful reminders of the layers of daily waste generated within urban environments. Numerically most strongly represented are goldsmiths from Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Denmark and Sweden. The applicants grow younger by the year, an indicator that even before or immediately after finishing their training goldsmiths seek to compete in our special show, present their work to an interested public, experts, gallery owners and museum curators, and rapidly find their way into the jewellery avant-garde. “Jewellery” is an important venue for making a name for oneself in international goldsmiths’ circles, establishing contacts, and not least, witnessing the award of the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize on Saturday.

Retrospektive bei Schmuck 2014: Dorothea Prühl, Deutschland
Honored as next year’s Modern Classic will be Dorothea Prühl, a goldsmith who lives in Halle. A teacher at Burg Giebichenstein Art College, she not only helped shape an entire generation of young goldsmiths but, over and above her teaching activity, has created an admirable, original oeuvre that holds a very special place within contemporary jewellery design.

 

The special “Jewellery” show is characterized by the choice of certain themes which, in the eyes of curator Jorunn Veiteberg, represent salient traits of current jewellery design. As signs of our times and selection criteria, she sees found objects of metal or wood, things that bear definite marks of use, materials that speak an expressive, earthy language, forms and structures reminiscent of architecture, as well as masks, a tendency to mysticism, and forceful color schemes.

FERROUS, an exhibition of jewelry using iron, steel, and steel alloys. Although the use of iron dates back more than two thousand years, this humble material is more commonly used for agriculture and industrial purposes than adornment. A significant exception is the Berlin Iron Jewelry of the early 19th century. The Prussian Royal family funded the uprising against Napoleon by encouraging wealthy citizens to exchange their precious gold and silver for intricately fabricated iron jewelry.Intricacy is just one aspect the 60 artists of FERROUS explore with this versatile material. Known for its strength and lightness, the steel and iron jewelry of FERROUS is both rusty and shiny, sheet and wire, bejeweled and modest. The exhibition will take place simultaneously at Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco and as a virtual exhibition at crafthaus online. In May FERROUS will travel to 18Karat Gallery in Toronto, Canada as part of The Society of North American Goldsmith’s annual conference.

Wearable words. A celebration of the Literary and Jewelry Arts by 13 Women Artists.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Facèré owner Karen Lorene will be reading an excerpt from her new novel.
« A six-legged bear. Four-inch claws. A gurgling growl. Paul’s legs churn through molasses. A tree ahead. His hands reach. His fingers grasp. Tree bark peels like scabs. Below him bear paws slam the tree. Whup! Whup! Whup!
A branch overhead! Almost safe! His arms are like sludge, like cooked noodles, like Jell-O. His heart pounds. Claws scrape his heel, engulf his foot. The tree shakes and the bear yells in a hollow voice that echoes up into the mountains and over the valleys––echoes and echoes, “SHALL WE DANCE? SHALL WE DANCE? SHALL WE DANCE?”
Paul laughs at the joke until he looks down. He has no legs. He can’t dance. He can’t climb. He can’t move or wiggle or breathe. He can’t… even when his Mom’s voice calls, “You can do it! You can do it!” He can’t. »

Monochrome Noir features work that boldly flaunts deep fields of black and that is punctuated with the perfect placement of a single color. These contemporary jewelry artists rely on the sleek, darker side of the monochromatic view. Often using found or recycled materials, much of this work presents a narrative inspired by geography, architecture, historical motifs, and decorative arts. The exhibition installation will also include portraits featuring the jewelry from Monochrome Noir by North Carolina photographer Becky Parker. This collection of jewelry and portraits alternates between punk and formal, irreverent and elegant. The show includes 22 artists from the United States, Estonia, and The Netherlands.
