exhibition catalog available

Magic City is coming... June 12 — July 14, 2013 Farrah Al-Dujaili, Emily Bullock, Lydia Feast, Christine Graf, Nanna Grønborg, I Ting (Heather) Ho, Zita Hsu, Christiana Joeckel, Lisa Juen, Yi (Roger) Liu, Katharina Moch, Kathryn Partington, Jo Pond, Fliss Quick, Xiaohan (Vincent) Ren, Natalie Smith, Li-Chu Wu, Wen-Miao Yeh Natalie Smith "When" brooch

MAGIC CITY is an exhibition of current work from emerging and established artists who came through the School of Jewellery, Birmingham. Flourishing despite the recent global downturns, jewelers coming out of Birmingham have shown a resourcefulness and resilience in the making and presentation of their work. Velvet da Vinci is pleased to showcase a selection of this talented group.Contrary to the often-remarked grey of its post industrialism, Birmingham, a city of multiple cultures, has become a vibrant center for the arts. The artists of this city are forging a strong presence within the art jewelry world. They are making a name for themselves for producing distinctive and desirable work that is offbeat, loud, quiet, funny, thoughtful, unfamiliar and unabashed: The art jewelry coming out of this city is testament to the magic.

Klassiker der Schmuck 2012
Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen, Deutschland

This year there will be a retrospective exhibition of the work of a « Modern Classic » designer. In 2012 the chosen designer is the German goldsmith Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen. Together with Francesco Pavan, Lorenzen was the first goldsmith to be awarded the Herbert Hofmann Prize, back in 1973. The award presentation ceremony, which this year is being held on Saturday, 17 March 2012, is always one of the highlights at SCHMUCK. Lorenzen, who was born in 1942 in Hagen, Westphalia, taught at the « Staatliche Zeichenakadamie » in Hanau from 1974 to 1985, while also acting as a visiting lecturer at the « Hochschule für Gestaltung » in Pforzheim, at which college he then, in 1985, took up an appointment as a professor. He continued to teach there in the jewellery design department until retiring in 2008.

“Schmuck-Show 2012” is a jewellery presentation with professional models, set in an exceptional light and sound design. With the cooperation of several artists who exhibit their works at different places in Munich during these ‘Jewellery Days’, on the evening before the start of the trade fair jewellery is being presented directly on the body. The jewellery stirs emotions and prompts diverse conversations. At the bar, artists, jewellery lovers and laymen meet; there is room for an animated exchange. The selection of the 62 exhibits to feature in the special show SCHMUCK 2011 was made by Dr Rüdiger Joppien (Head of the Department of Art Nouveau and Modernism at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg), a recognised expert in the applied arts. In total over 650 designers had submitted applications to be granted a space to exhibit within SCHMUCK 2011. Featured in the exhibition are the works of a number of designers of international renown – names like Kimiaki Kageyama (Japan), Ted Noten (Netherlands), Lisa Walker (New Zealand), Ike Jünger (Germany) and Peter Bauhuis (Germany). Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

Wendy Ramshaw und David Watkins © Artists

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

EXPO ‘Alchemists: New concepts in jewellery’ – New Brewery Arts, Cirencester (UK) – 14 Janv-27 Fevr. 2011

 Alchemists: New concepts in jewellery

Jewellers are not defined by traditional materials and today’s makers are constantly pushing the boundaries of what jewellery can be.
Be it big and bold or pale and subtle, the innovative world of studio jewellery will delight and challenge in equal measure often making us re examine our pre conceptions of what jewellery means.
ALCHEMISTS, the latest jewellery exhibition to be curated at New Brewery Arts, sets out to investigate and present the work of contemporary jewellers who take precious or unexpected materials and transform them into unusual and desirable jewellery.
The notion of using precious and non-precious materials within jewellery is hardly new, but this show seeks to highlight the breadth of approaches and range of materials used by today’s makers when exploring the adornment of the body.
New Brewery Arts is proud to present the work of over 25 artists. Internationally renowned and award winning contemporary jewellers will be exhibiting alongside the fresh talent of new makers just stepping out in their careers.

« Message in a jewel ….. » (chanson bien connue) – « Dear JAMES », Munich (DE) 3-7 mars 2010

DEAR JAMES - The James exchange

» « Dear JAMES » is based around the idea of six artists sending one another a series of letters over a six month period. The contents of the letter in unprescribed, the only stipulations being that that the letter is written intuitively on a given date and posted immediately to a given address. Each artist will use the letters they have received to stimulate the creation of a collection of pieces taking what they will from their fellow artists thoughts and observations. This will result in an exhibition of contemporary Jewellery and Metal work that has been inspired by written words. The complete set of 30 letters will form a snapshot of each of our individual thoughts over a six month period from across the world, only coming together at the first showing of Dear JAMES to form the complete picture alongside the work it has inspired. » (Klimt02 information)

EXPO ‘Hoar Frost’ – Craft2EU gallery, Hambourg (DE) – 13 Jan 2010 – 6 Mar 2010

Kathryn Partington -'ethereal' neckpiece 2009 - silver & silk, transfers 2Anke HennigEisschollen 2009 Silver

Kathryn Partington – neckpiece ‘Ethereal’ 2009 – Silver and silk, transfers
Anke Hennig – necklace  ‘Hybrid II’ 2009 Makrolon
Michaela Kirchner – necklace ‘Eisschollen’ 2009 Silver

*Kathryn Partington produces one-off wearable items of jewellery by utilising her background training within the discipline of tableware ceramics & printed  textiles. She does not leave us with the association of the hoar frost on our skin. She rather conserve it in silver, silk and porcelain with fine patterns. These are applied in various printing and embossing techniques. some of them seems total magic ; it glimmers ever so softly, shimmers delicately and comes across changing just like a changing picture does.

*Anke Hennig combines with her jewellery the colours of winter and icy glitter with her delicate transparency of textile weave, called Monofil. The secret of her invention she keeps all to herself. The rosettes which are made into brooches and earrings are light and precious : a flexible development of the chains, partly because of the secrecy of their technique and at the same time their beauty.

*Michaela Kirchner experiments with tiniest structures, which line up around the neck of the person carrying them as if they were silver-coloured floating ice. Their amorpheus shapes are, melted into tiny glitter sructures which catch the light from all sides and throw back the light, shimmering and prescious.
