LIGHT me please ……

« Jewelry that explores the lucent qualities of materials. Mostly using acrylics – or perspex, plexiglass or lucite, names depending on the manufacturers –  experiments are made using neon colors and transparencies which are very adequate mediums to conduct light but as well by including electrical components that add to the already quite extraordinary forms the conceptual element of thinking jewellery as devices. «  (popupuau)

Dian Luo, a Chinese jewellery designer based in London.  Using the  light  as  the design source,  she  transforms  it  from  abstractive  element  into  a  multiplicity  of  geometric  jewellery  piece  that  plays with shadow & movement.

by Yoolhee Ko - « reflection » collection 2012
« Why have you choose plastic to make your jewellery? Yoolhee Ko: Because of my concept. I would like to transfer colour to my jewels and my jewels are quite big so I have to use more light weight materials… I chose plastic. Prisms have their transparency and sheerness, but at the same time when it sparkles by reflecting light, there are chromatic colours. It took me back to the visuals that are dreamy and full of fantasy. » (Dazed Digital interview)
The artist’s designs resemble a prism, which at first appears transparent and singular, but reflects chromatic colors when light shines through. By embedding her own experiences and perceptions into her designs, Ko’s pieces project new images through the act of reflection. Ko hopes her users will experience an equally reflective form of catharsis when they wear her designs

Aurora – Second Skin by Lighting -  by Kyeok Kim
« Aurora creates patterns of light on the body as ornamentation, extending the ornamented space around the body and restyling its decorative silhouette by motion. Aurora highlights the relationship between different pieces of jewellery, by its nature the pieces interact with the another. To operate the decorative light, one must gently move the ring (containing a magnet) towards the main jewellery piece. »

MAGIC CITY is an exhibition of current work from emerging and established artists who came through the School of Jewellery, Birmingham. Flourishing despite the recent global downturns, jewelers coming out of Birmingham have shown a resourcefulness and resilience in the making and presentation of their work. Velvet da Vinci is pleased to showcase a selection of this talented group.Contrary to the often-remarked grey of its post industrialism, Birmingham, a city of multiple cultures, has become a vibrant center for the arts. The artists of this city are forging a strong presence within the art jewelry world. They are making a name for themselves for producing distinctive and desirable work that is offbeat, loud, quiet, funny, thoughtful, unfamiliar and unabashed: The art jewelry coming out of this city is testament to the magic.

Jewelry in a New Iron Age by 60 International Artists

Velvet da Vinci San Francisco exhibition
March 1 – April 14, 2013
Artists’ reception Friday, March 1, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m.

FERROUS, an exhibition of jewelry using iron, steel, and steel alloys. Although the use of iron dates back more than two thousand years, this humble material is more commonly used for agriculture and industrial purposes than adornment. A significant exception is the Berlin Iron Jewelry of the early 19th century. The Prussian Royal family funded the uprising against Napoleon by encouraging wealthy citizens to exchange their precious gold and silver for intricately fabricated iron jewelry
.Intricacy is just one aspect the 60 artists of FERROUS explore with this versatile material. Known for its strength and lightness, the steel and iron jewelry of FERROUS is both rusty and shiny, sheet and wire, bejeweled and modest. The exhibition will take place simultaneously at Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco and as a virtual exhibition at crafthaus online. In May FERROUS will travel to 18Karat Gallery in Toronto, Canada as part of The Society of North American Goldsmith’s annual conference.

The Beauty Chase – Parcours esthétiques du bijou contemporain

The Beauty Chase – Parcours esthétiques du bijou contemporain.

EXPO ‘Mirror Mirror’ – Espace Solidor, Cagnes-sur-mer (FR) – 23 Juin-23 Sept. 2012
