San Francisco’s Velvet da Vinci is proud to present Lisa & Scott Cylinder: Blinding the Cyclops. The show will run from July 8 through August 7, 2015. An opening reception with the artists will take place on Friday, July 10, from 6-8 pm.
Husband and wife artist team Lisa & Scott Cylinder began collaborating in 1988, shortly after studying Jewelry/Metalsmithing at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Their long-term partnership has produced an ongoing series of one-of-a-kind sculptural jewelry, which often incorporates found objects and epoxy resins into their metalwork. Lisa & Scott Cylinder: Blinding the Cyclops will debut a new body of work by the duo, made by repurposing and altering parts from musical instruments, games, antiquated tools, and more. During a 2014 interview with Smithsonian.com, Lisa Cylinder described the inspiration for their process as follows:

“It’s a soul thing… the things we use were touched by somebody. Once you see those pieces, you identify a moment in your life with that particular object. The tool that someone used in making something—there’s sweat on it, there’s toil on it. A musical instrument—someone played it. The human contact is part of what we do, and the reason we select the objects.”

Blinding The Cyclops has been a new chapter in our artistic Odyssey. After 27 years of making representational work, we have charted a new course away from our comfort zone.   Representation had become our Cyclops, and in order to free ourselves we needed to escape from our captor.   This action has enabled us to grow, change, and challenge ourselves as artists and problem solvers in a tangential manner.
Although our fascination with found objects (especially musical instruments) continues, their use as materials has become further abstracted.   Their deconstruction has been pushed farther and the outcome is purposefully less representational.   We have reinvented our working methodology as well as our subject matter. This giant step has enabled us to develop a new vocabulary referencing Design and Technologies of the 20^th Century, the time in which our aesthetics as makers were formed.
Blinding The Cyclops represents an epic creative adventure. Wielding the same techniques and materials from our past works, we have challenged ourselves to create a fresh group of wearable objects that subvert what had become familiar.   We continue to change and challenge ourselves in our quest to create intriguing, well-crafted hand made objects in the 21st Century.

 ‘The Plastic Show’, an exhibition featuring work from the recently published Lark Jewelry Book 500 Plastic Jewelry Designs. The Plastic Show features 250 pieces by 75 artists employing a variety of plastic materials such as resin, latex, rubber, epoxy, and thermoplastics, many of which are reused or recycled. Having been embraced by artists and designers, these materials are now firmly woven into the language of contemporary jewelry making. Used alone or in combination with traditional elements, these substances can, with certainty, be classified as precious. Thanks to the use of plastics, conventional components like silver, gold, platinum, and gemstones are now only part of the jewelry-making equation. The jewelry in this collection represents the best work being produced today by artists who use plastics as a foundational element in their pieces.

En bonne « fille des années 60-70″ je voue un amour inconsidéré au plastique ! Il faut dire aussi qu’un événemant particulier de ma vie a grandement joué en ce sens : petite, vivant à Thessalonique (nord de la Grèce), on y subissait de nombreux tremblements de terre. L’un d’eux a déclenché un gigantesque incendie où ma famille a TOUT perdu. Mon ère a pleuré son Toulouse-Lautrec, moi mon nounours, et ma mère son argenterie qui a entièrement fondu …. MAIS …. les pompiers nous ont remis ce qui a vait été sauvé : la VAISSELLE en PLASTIQUE, rangée dans le placard au-dessus de l’évier, près du réservoir d’eau ……… c’était le premier signe ! ensuite, remeublement oblige, mes parents se sont entièrement remeublés en « design tout plastique » : sièges en ABS de Guy Paulin, tables plastique de Vico Magistretti chez Artemide, et toute « l’invasion » de plastique orange des années 68 (vous visualisez ? la balance terraillon en plastique orange ? le tourne-disque Phillips mallette-portable-ouvrable ? les miroirs à bords arrondis de chez Artemide ?  les tables de nuit de chez Kartell ??? ) ………et voilà ! j’AIME le plastique !! ses infinies possibilités de formes, ses couleurs « décapantes », son humeur joyeuse  ……….. bon, d’accord, il n’est pas écologique DU TOUT et, parait-il, rend stérile ….. mais … ça me réjouit et me met en joie !

Lisa and Scott Cylinder : Transpositions

«  Transpositions began with a discarded clarinet. Disassembled and repurposed, the deconstructed clarinet merged into a body of work that transformed a once aural implement into a visual one. Lisa and Scott Cylinder’s Transpositions is the result of this exploration.
Husband and wife team Lisa and Scott Cylinder began working together in 1988 after graduating from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For twenty-two years they have collaborated from their studio in Oley, Pensilvania, to make one-of-a-kind and small production pieces. Included in publications such as Metalsmith and Art Jewelry Today, Lisa and Scott Cylinder have gained recognition and awards for their collaborative work. They are included in permanent collections at the Racine Art Museum in Racine, Wisconsin and the Museum of Contemporary Arts & Design in New York City. «

COUP de COEUR ! Maria Cristina Bellucci et autres coups de crayon

Jusqu’à maintenant, les bijoux de Maria Cristina Bellucci  j’aimais bien … sans plus .. je trouvais ça bien fait (c’est vrai que chez elle c’est particulièrement bien fait, avec une belle finition !), amusant, coloré …. mais là, ce bracelet a basculé la donne !

« Un oggetto comune che ha accompagnato tutta la mia vita. Tolte dal loro ambiente e decontestualizzate le matite  divengono irriconoscibili,  acquistano una nuova bellezza e una nuova funzione. Le matite colorate  a  sezione esagonale si incastrano perfettamente e divengono una superfice unica come le celle di un alveare.   Le tecniche usate sono quelle tradizionali dell’oreficeria e falegnameria, le matite sono lavorate come fossero un unico pezzo di legno e incollate come fossero pietre all’argento. Viene applicata una patina per rendere impermeabile il legno, si tratta di una cera mista ad oli usata in bioarchittettura, un prodotto naturale privo di tossicità,  è incolore permettendo la lettura cromatica delle mine in tutte le loro tonalità.  » (Maria Cristina Bellucci)

 » For several years I worked as theatre costume and accessories maker, creating also a wide range of jewellery for stage use. I developed a strong interest for contemporary jewellery and I dedicated myself to it.
As much as designing and making my own personal jewellery collection, I work on commission, and also design and create jewellery in collaboration with other artists and designers.
What characterized my early work was the use of very thin metal sheets and wires, experimenting with hollowness and fullness. In later work, I started using even thinner metal sheets, as if working with paper sheets, creating pieces that were voluminous and light at the same time.
My more recent work is characterised by having more solid looking elements and also by the introduction of colour, not previously explored.  » (Maria Cristina Bellucci)

« materiamorfosi is the brainchild of Margherita Marchioni (IT), another talented young artist. Are we feeling old yet? all materials are fair game for this imaginative soul. rubber bands and plastic kitchen gloves morph into necklaces and bracelets. and pasta…oh what she does with pasta! more neckwear. plastic grocery bags too. and that’s not even her new stuff. My head is spinning – the recycled eyeglass sculptures, handbags made from photographic slides, chopsticks, pencils…i’m getting tired just thinking about it. I think it’s time for my nap. »
