 Creativity that  twenty jewelry designers Netherlands manifested in « More than clogs and tulips » exhibition being sometimes serious, sometimes playful.
Each piece reveals the diversity of shapes and materials chosen. In some cases it has evolved to manifest as sculpture to be carried, worn and enhance the beauty of those who wear.

Klassiker der Schmuck 2012
Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen, Deutschland

This year there will be a retrospective exhibition of the work of a « Modern Classic » designer. In 2012 the chosen designer is the German goldsmith Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen. Together with Francesco Pavan, Lorenzen was the first goldsmith to be awarded the Herbert Hofmann Prize, back in 1973. The award presentation ceremony, which this year is being held on Saturday, 17 March 2012, is always one of the highlights at SCHMUCK. Lorenzen, who was born in 1942 in Hagen, Westphalia, taught at the « Staatliche Zeichenakadamie » in Hanau from 1974 to 1985, while also acting as a visiting lecturer at the « Hochschule für Gestaltung » in Pforzheim, at which college he then, in 1985, took up an appointment as a professor. He continued to teach there in the jewellery design department until retiring in 2008.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse, SCHMUCK will as usual be setting off abroad, this time to Valencia in Spain. Each year since 2006 the exhibition has been hosted in a range of countries, among them Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (Municipal Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua), the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York) and the French town of Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor).

 ’Verwandlungen – Metamorphosen’

Die Ausstellung « Verwandlungen – Metamorphosen » will zeigen, welchen Reichtum an Phantasie und welche Vielfalt an Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten das Kunsthandwerk in der Beschäftigung mit vorgefundenen Materialien entwickelt. Dabei entdeckt das gestaltende Handwerk gerade auch das Industrieprodukt für sich als eine neue Materialgruppe. Mit herkömmlichen, aber auch unkonventionellen handwerklichen Techniken werden Industrieprodukte, besonders solche aus Kunststoffen, wiederverwendet, umgearbeitet und neuartig zusammengestellt. Es handelt sich um eine spezielle Form des Recycelns, denn es geht nicht nur darum, Rohstoffe aus Gründen des Umweltschutzes weiter zu nutzen, sondern es wird auch das fertige, vorgefundene Objekt selbst einbezogen. Seine Form und Farbigkeit, die Struktur der Oberflächen und die Spuren seines Alters dienen als Inspiration für eine Neunutzung, Funktionsveränderung und Interpretation. Hieraus entsteht ein reizvolles Miteinander, denn die Geschichte der Gegenstände, ihre eigenen Traditionen und Funktionen bleiben in der ›Verwandlung‹ in unterschiedlichem Maße erhalten und verstärken die inhaltliche Aussage und emotionale Wirkung der neuen Objekte. ›Alt‹ und ›Neu‹ begegnen sich durch diese ›Verwandlung‹ auf eine Weise, die das Moment der Poesie, der Überraschung, des Witzes und der Irritation einschließen kann. Anliegen der Ausstellung ist es zu zeigen, wie aus Interesse an neuen Materialien und der Hinterfragung gängiger Wertvorstellungen, der Anreiz entsteht, die Schönheit im ›Gewöhnlichen‹ und ›Alltäglichen‹ zu suchen, aus ›wertlosen‹ Dingen Gegenstände von hohem ästhetischem Reiz zu bilden und damit die Neugierde des Betrachters und seine Aufmerksamkeit zu fesseln. Aus alltäglichen Gegenständen und ›Müll‹ entstehen auf spielerisch-experimentelle und zugleich ernsthafte Weise moderne Gestaltungsideen, die diese Objekte in etwas durchaus Prachtvolles verwandeln. Diese Arbeit mit Widersprüchen verleiht den Werken einen besonderen Reiz. Einen Schwerpunkt der Ausstellung bilden Objekte aus dem Bereich Schmuck, wo schon lange und auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise mit ›Fundstücken‹ verschiedenster Art gearbeitet wird, und Lampen, für die die gefundenen Plastikreste effektvoll wiederverwendet werden können. Weiterhin sind Arbeiten aus den Bereichen Glas, Keramik, Metall, Papier und Textil vertreten. Es finden sich Möbel, deren Wirkung in der Kombination von schlichter Form und alten Holzplatten liegt, prunkvolle Leuchter mit Blüten aus Plastikflaschen, Keramiken, deren Oberflächen durch Hinzufügen oder Entfernen von Dekormotiven verfremdet wurden, Gebrauchsobjekte aus neu zusammengefügten Glasflaschen, Schmuck aus Fußbällen, Fahrradschläuchen, Shampooflaschen, Obstnetzen, Ölkanistern, Kinderspielzeug, Plastiktüten, Objekte aus Papier und Brottütenverschlüssen. All diese Materialien werden in eine neue, ungewöhnliche, interessante und phantasievolle Form verwandelt. Die beteiligten Künstler stammen aus Australien, Deutschland, Finnland, Frankreich, Großbritannien, Japan, Neuseeland, den Niederlanden, Polen, der Schweiz, Südafrika und den USA.

What remains and what disappears? The image, form, material and meaning – everything is subject to a change. Most of it vanishes in the end.
My discovery of plastic bags as a material is rather recent.
The colour, the shine and the many kinds of plastic contained in the plastic bags have seduced me to do several series of melting experiments. I started with cutting the plastic bags into small pieces, melting them in the oven and then taking them out to press them into a mould.
At a later stage I have relised that for the ultimate result, it is much better to work without a mould, and concentrate on the pure material – the melted plastic.
Currently, I sometimes stitch the pieces together before puting them in the oven. I try to influence the outcome during the melting process. For this I take the piece out of the oven, rearrange the plastic and put it back again. This may happen several times during the baking process. I also try to influence the colour palette of the plastic although this may not lead to the indented result. The key moment is when to take the piece out of the oven; a difference of few seconds could result in totally different outcome. The experience of unpredictability and chance excites me.
I also value the fact that many friends collected the plastic bags for me and jointly we are aiding a recycling process. Ugly bags may lead to beautifull results and vice versa.
From the melted material I select those pieces that have expressiveness and shape the story into my jewellery pieces. These pieces might carry reference to traditional jewelery, for it is tradition that delicately balances between temporary and eternal.

A Portable Discussion about current issues in the Middle East.
42 juried jewellery artists from 22 countries showing work on the conflict

 Why jewelry?
« Jewelry is an intimate art medium within the private and the public space which offers a personal relationship and an encounter between the wearer ,the viewer audience and the actual jewelry. It is an invitation to start a conversation and it can make a meeting possible. The body is a portable show case and the wearer chooses what and how to exhibit on him/her. Jewelry express the wearer character and sense of humor, it acts as an extension to the wearer personality, indicating his/her group of belonging, it is asking questions or claiming its opinion about the reality in which we live in, about our society, our surrounding and ourselves« 

The project aim is to raise discussion about current issues in the Middle East through an international art exhibition in which jewellery is the chosen media.

Cause We Care.
The region’s history and present are seeded with continuous violent national, ethnic and other conflicts. In many aspects the Middle East is considered to be one of the most sensitive and unstable regions in the world; strategically, economically, politically, culturally and religiously. It is located in the center of the international politics agenda. Its historical role, its huge reserves of crud oil and its significance for the three largest monotheist religions are usually taken as reasons for the world’s ardent interest in the region. But the attitude towards the Middle East has pasted the point of a keen interest in world affairs. By now it seems clear that the Middle East is perceived, especially by consumers of Western media, as the place where world dramas converge, or – more accurately – collide. It is almost the opposite of the Bermuda Triangle: everything that happens there pops up on our radars.
What is the Middle East? What is the source of our attraction to it? Is it just that it happens to be the most eventful place on earth? What is the nature of our commitment to effecting the future of the region? Do we really care about what goes on there? Do we really care about what goes on anywhere that is elsewhere? Do we care about the Middle East in a way similar to the way we care about how people look at us? Do we care about it the way we care about what people see in us?

« I have chosen to use camel dung, because  it’s shape and color. Although the use of camel dung in jewelry may provoke it also links: in those (not so) far-away countries, many people are still using these animals, and their excrement, in daily life, while some others, a few miles away , are smoking the cigars of the oil business. I have chosen to use gold because gold is the referential measurement on which the whole world economy is founded. It remains a major symbol for jewelry, almost everywhere around the world. While camels are traditionally emblems of the noble class, in the nomad society, a clear mark of wealth and importance. It seems to be two different temporalities, which are still sharing the same space, coexisting in the same territories. »

Unusual SHOP : « In Stock » – goes to ASIA during Taiwan Designers’ Week 2010 – 3-12 Sept 2010

‘In Stock’ the jewellery pop-up store in a hardware shop coat is a blessed concept initiated by the three Dutch designers Ineke Heerkens, Jantje Fleischhut, Jeannette Jansen since 2009. This project of an unconventional display of contemporary jewellery design shows work, which lingers on the edge of design and art. Around seventy renowned international designers produce for this concept multiples in an edition of five – still mostly handmade.

For the display, blister packaging on perforated wooden walls is used, price labels, cash register, a supermarket trolley at the entrance.

After popping up in cities like Munich and Amsterdam, ‘In Stock’ is coming to Asia (Taipei) during the Taiwan Designers’ Week 2010 with the help of the two guest curators Yu-Chun Chen and Min-Ling Hsieh.

« This is a huge heart which actually is a huge knot. That is the key feeling in this work; a huge,  screaming (maybe bleeding..), knot- heart. The knot is such a paradoxical form; it consists of “one”, but through an action (of knotting) it becomes “two”, with a heart between them. At the same time it is the ground of endless processes which in themselves are not complex, but all together they create an unsolvable, knotted reality. An un-followable mass of actions and reactions. There is no wrong or right, just a complex, painful situation. » (Ela Bauer)

 » This necklace brings together and mixes various prayer-necklaces, which only differ in detail. Prayerbeads are being used in several religions and they all have their own systematical design. The beads stands for the different prayers and by following the beads you can’t loose track and count while you are praying. The Roman-Catholic church has the ‘rosary”, the Islam has the “tespi”,  Buddhism (Nichiren) has the “juzu”and Tibetan Buddhism has the “mala”. Nowadays we are living in a time of globalization. Worldwide people are connecting more and more, not only economically, but also politically and culturally. Borders are fading and people travel and migrate more than ever. Out of that comes integration of different cultures and religions. Partly because of the not always so very successful integration-policy of many countries, extremism in certain religions also flourishes, conflicts arise. With this/my interpretation of the prayer-necklace I want to bring together all  prayer-necklace and make 1 out of it all.  A contemporary blood red prayer necklace. In my opinion the religions don’t differ so much from one another, they differ mostly in details. That’s what I want to show with this necklace. By bringing together all the prayerbeads, symbolically I want to bring together the different religions and with that the people. The title “Bound by Blood” stands for the idea that on the inside we are all the same. It also refers to the many wars (and with that the shedding of a lot of blood) that have been fought in the name of religion » (Katja Prins (NL))

Burcu Buyukunal (TR) -’Terrifying Beauty’ head piece – brass, cubic zirconia – Turkey, 2009

« My work is driven by conventions and societal norms relating to the body prevalent in history both past and present. Plastic surgery, alternative medicine, and ways of predicting the future are belief  systems whose underpinnings I am uncertain of. I use my work to illustrate my inability to reconcile the purposes, needs, and motives of these systems and the people who subscribe to them. As a fairly recent development in mass culture, plastic surgery is a system that suggests attaining beauty popularized by the media. ‘Terrifying Beauty’ focuses on the trends of cosmetic surgery, which  oftentimes impose the conception of Western Beauty, to question conventions of beauty and  challenge the function of jewelry as adornment. I created four pieces distorting the face in an unlikely way, contrasting and contradicting the purpose of traditional jewelry. I want my work to surprise and challenge people to inspire questioning. Suggesting something extreme, unusual, and irrational is one strategy to achieve this. I hope the viewer will immediately ask if they would or would not wear such pieces. I wanted to use gold first but it was expensive for me. So, I used brass that looks like gold in the photos. Then I noticed that material hierarchy was another convention. Thus, using brass supported my idea. My forms simply followed the function of each piece.« (Burcu Buyukunal)

« ‘Elegy’ honors the individual men and women who left homes … travelled to Iraq for war and died there. It is about the pain of loss and lies, etched with the words, « lies brought this lament – this elegy of truth – these lost treasures.
Elegy is a monumental neck-piece consisting of over 4200 digital portraits. Each portrait shows one American man or woman who lost life in Iraq during the Bush presidency. Using public  records for the names and photos of the fallen, if no portrait was available a silhouette was used to represent the lost life. Each Elegy portrait is printed on acid-free paper, which was chosen for its workability. The prints were mounted on an intermediate paper layer and sandwiched back-to-back to form a simple 1.5cm x 3cm link.  The links were connected by brass rings and formed into 70 strands which terminate at brass disk. The disc is etched with the words, “lies brought this lament – this elegy of truth -these lost treasures. » (Sally Von Bargen)

EXPO ‘LINGAM’ – Galerie du WCC-BF, Mons (Belgique) – 8 mai-22 aout 2010

« L’exposition LINGAM met en scène 121 interprétations d’un symbole ancestral de fertilité : le lingam.
Représentation symbolique du phallus et du dieu Shiva, le Lingam représente la force créatrice à la base de l’existence de tout l’univers. Dans les religions hindoue et bouddhique, c’est par le biais du lingam que l’on honore quotidiennement le dieu Shiva, la représentation phallique n’y est nullement mise en relation avec le sexe.
Dans la culture occidentale, le phallus évoque la sexualité et le plaisir. Alors qu’il fut un temps où le Christianisme et la culture judéo chrétienne mettaient également en avant la sexualité comme acte créateur positif. Depuis la séparation du corps et de l’esprit, cet aspect en a été banni et d’une référence sacrée, la sexualité est devenue un mal nécessaire.
Avec l’exposition LINGAM, son commissaire, le plasticien Ruudt Peters (NL), désire rétablir cette signification initiale ainsi que sa dimension spirituelle.

Partant de sa fascination pour le lingam dont il a découvert l’existence il y a dix ans lors de voyages en Asie du Sud-est, il a eut envie de proposer à des artistes et designers contemporains de créer un objet symbolisant la fertilité, chaque créateur interprétant le sujet en se basant sur sa propre sensibilité et sa perception personnelle du thème.
121 créations ont ainsi vu le jour et sont présentées dans une scénographie où la signification originelle du lingam est soulignée par la présentation des objets contemporains en compagnie de leurs modèles originaux. »

Après deux étapes particulièrement remarquées à Stockholm et Utrecht, l’exposition Lingam sera présente cet été aux anciens abattoirs de Mons où la Galerie du WCC-BF accueillera les œuvres des 121 créateurs, issus de 24 pays à travers le monde, qui se sont prêtés au jeu de la réinterprétation de ce symbole fort, à la fois si spécifique et universel.

EXPO ‘Machteld van Joolingen – Fragnaments’, « Beyond Fashion » gallery, Antwerp/Anvers (BE), 11 mars – 24 avril 2010

« Why does jewellery exist ? What does it mean to us ?
To me these are very important questions. In my work I endeavour to unveil something of the relationship between jewellery and its wearers. Notions like ritual, culture, gesture, and folklore are the sources of my work. »« The underlying basis of my work is the mystery versus known traditions and folklore. Combining past and present made me create steel jewellery with a vulnerable look  and in which a personal and universal imagery and vision is interwoven.
Inspired by different countries and cultures, patterns, textures and symbols are melted into new designs that result in jewellery with a new meaning and context. I also use images of news clips and place them in an intimate setting, in something wearable.  The work is made out of thin steel in which the ornaments or figures are etched in one or more layers resulting in a complex story of images. The pleasure in working with ornament and the technique of etching has naturally created a second series of simpler contemporary pieces called ‘Sier’ whereby the ornament or design element defines the image. » (Machteld van Joolingen)
