Jewellery artists from 22 countries all over the world come together in a memorial exhibition for Manfred Bischoff who passed away a year ago. At some point or other, they have all been taught by Manfred at Alchimia, contemporary jewellery school in Florence, and have each submitted one piece to the exhibition that honours a great teacher.
German born Manfred Bischoff lived in Tuscany in a house that was in itself a piece of exquisite art. Its magical interior made a natural and perfect framework for his work that has been called by many names: sensual, poetic, lyrical, great, intimate, strong, beautiful, satirical and always surprising. He worked in 22K gold, as pure as he could manage and still maintain a rigidity in the metal that allowed him to execute his ideas in delicate and well crafted pieces, often accompanied with subtle pink coral and drawings.
His dedication to the language of jewellery and his visions were most likely one of the reasons that the Alchimia school managed to become known and respected internationally in a relatively short time span.

The teacher
« As a student at Alchimia, you never really met Manfred until the third year. He was a giant figure who arrived to the narrow street in Florence on Tuesdays. He spent time with the older students, watched the world from behind his sunglasses when he leaned onto the wall at coffee breaks, and then he vanished again.
It was not until you were there yourself – in your final year – that you met the myth and began to appreciate his capacity to engage in your work and to show you how you might develop it. He was a surprisingly selfless teacher, and during critiques in the small classroom he managed to create a space for you and him to engage in a dialogue about your work that was stripped of second agendas and based solely on how he could help you to become a better artist.
It is only later, you come to understand how exceptionally truthful and helpful he tried to be in order to make you grow as a person and as an artist. »

EXPO ‘Salute to Pinton’ – Espace Solidor, Cagnes-sur-Mer (FR) -15 Juin-6 Oct. 2013

« Salute to Pinton » – bijou contemporain

vernissage le samedi 15 juin à 18h

Espace Solidor

‘Salute to Pinton’ is an exhibition intended as an ultimate thank-you for his unrestrained unique generosity and the trust he has put in us. By means of their creations, twenty one artists give a simple salute to the great master Professor Mario Pinton.

MARIO PINTON, spilla (brooch) , oro, rubino, 1995MARIO PINTON, spilla (brooch) , oro, rubino, 1995

European Triennale for Contemporary Jewellery 2011 – Anciens Abattoirs, Mons (BE) – 29 Oct. 2011-15 janv. 2012

Triennale européenne du Bijou contemporain 2011

Grande Halle des Anciens Abattoirs de Mons - Du 29 octobre 2011 au 15 janvier 2012.

European Triennale for Contemporary Jewellery 2011, Anciens Abattoirs, Mons, Belgium

http://www.wcc-bf.org/sites/default/files/galerie/Triennale-Bijou_affiche.jpg

Major event in the world of contemporary jewelry design, this exhibition will provide to the public the creation of European artists who push the limits of the jewelry in a constant search for technical and formal innovations.

The concept of the Triennale is based on the invitation of the creators of two European countries to present their work in the company of creations by Belgian jewelers.

After the United Kingdom in 2002, Spain and Estonia in 2005 and Netherlands and Switzerland in 2008, this time Germany and Portugal are the invited countries of this fourth edition of the triennial. Their artists will compete with a selection of Belgian artists.
Sixty artists, chosen by German, Belgian and Portuguese curators, masters of art or young talents, will gather in the great Halle of the former slaughterhouses of Mons for one of the major events in the field of European contemporary jewellery.

Masters or young talents, these artists offer their interpretation of the jewelry of today.

among them : Nevin Arig (B), Svenja John (D), Manfred Bischoff (D), Valentin Quaresma (P), Monique Voz (B), Mirjam Hiller (D), Pedro Sequeira (P), Hilde De Decker (B), Isabell Schaupp (D), Silke Fleischer (D) ……

Wendy Ramshaw und David Watkins © Artists

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

From there it evolved into different shapes and forms and it is one of the collections that I continually return to, and inevitably end up adding to it. I am very drawn to different shapes and enjoy the process and outcomes of trying to create new ones. »

Jacqueline de JONG, NLpommes de jong‘ – 2009  varying sizes cm – jewelry – mixed media (gold-dipped potato skin)

For her current exhibition, de Jong has created a series of potato bijoux, “Pommes de Jong.” They consist of potatoes laid out to dry until they are totally shrivelled, and then dipped, roots and all, in a bath of molten gold, with surprising results – jewel-like objects in weird and wonderful forms.
Her interest in integrating the humble potato, which she cultivates in her garden in France, into her art, began in 2001 with her series of paintings inspired by Malevich, as the hair of The Farmer’s Wife (”Potato Hair”). This was followed in 2002 by a painted dialogue (”Harvest”) with the pioneering Russian artist. This theme continued with “Aardappeltaal’ (Potato Language), a collaboration with Jennifer Tee at the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven in 2003. In 2006, participated in the Biennale di Ceramica dell’arte (curated by Roberto Orth), in Albissola, Italy, with an installation of ceramic objects of “baked potatoes” for the home and garden of the Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914-1973).
