Maria Rosa Franzin

« Thinking about the object, sketching her thoughts and then letting time pass to encourage them to become concrete shapes. My pieces are the result of a close confrontation between thought expression in terms of signs and its actual translation into three- dimensional objects by working flat metal plate.
The pictorial instinct is in the way shapes and in the implementation phase, become graphic signs, a brushstroke, mark, scratch, specks on the “skin” of metal.
Steel wire provides a means for translating these graphic marks like in the neckpiece Hartung.
Pictorial traces are outlined on the surface of the metal, abstract compositions where gold veins emerge from oxidized silver plated or surfaces are marked by tiny traces. »

"black is beautiful " - Galerie Isabella Hund - Sabine Steinhäuser Gigi Mariani Maria Rosa Franzin 15. März – 4. April 2014

sex drugs .... - werkschau - 28-09/12-10 2012

The perceptions of Dante Alighieri, who described the seven deadly sins and seven virtues in his Divine Comedy, are the starting point of the competition and exhibition project entitled Sex, Drugs & Rock ’n’ Roll…Vices or Lifestyle?
Dante Alighieri (1265—1321), the great Italian poet of the late Middle Ages, referred to lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride as deadly sins. We wanted to find out what jewelry artists think about vices and lifestyle in our day and age and asked them to illustrate, using their medium, the ideas associated in the past with sin and vice. Since the 1960s, the notion of sin, which was often associated with youth protests and women’s emancipation, has under gone major changes. Today, people in all modern societies are much less prone to regard sexuality in principle as a sin. Even the approach to drugs is much more differentiated, although we know that the use of and dealing with hard drugs are a worldwide problem. And it is also evident that even work, sports, TV and many other things can turn into “drugs” — not to mention alcohol, this socially acceptable drug which, as of late, is again being used excessively, especially by youths. In the light of the crises of the 21st century, the seven deadly sins and seven virtues described by Dante Alighieri have gained a new relevance. However, in addition to the “traditional” seven deadly sins, there are a number of entirely new vices and tres passes that play an important role in everyday life in the year 2012. Destruction of the environment, excessive arms build up in view of permanent hunger crises, or genetic engineering can be regarded as sins of our time and are topics that dominate both the media and the public discourse today.
On the one hand, the Sex, Drugs & Rock ’n’ Roll….. Vices or Lifestyle? competition puts contemporary jewelry in the lime light. All over the world, this highly traditional medium is being used by more or less academically trained designers in a largely liberal artistic fashion. Any material is allowed, and an almost unlimited spectrum of ideas can be expressed in these body related creations. What unites the protagonists of modern jewelry is the idea that their medium is neither supposed to serve merely as a fashionable accessory nor as a means of representation. Artistically designed jewelry is above all a carrier of ideas. On the other hand, the theme of the competition is particularly interesting for jewelry creators because jewelry has been regarded from a moral aspect since the time of the Enlightenment. Expensive jewels — which only the very rich can afford — still evoke envy and resentment, provoke crime and are associated with vice. Especially in this respect, contemporary jewelry is considered a counter-concept. It is intended for imaginative wearers who appreciate inventive creativity and individuality. We would like to thank all the participants for their contributions and our jurors, Barbara Schmidt and Giovanni Corvaja, for their expert selection.

EXPO 'Maria Rosa Franzin, Graziano Visintin, Robi Gottlieb-Cahen' - Galerie Orfèo, Luxembourg (LX) - 23 Mars-29 Avril 2012 dans Exposition/Exhibition 30057Maria Rosa Franzin – Brooch

Maria-Rosa Franzin: Jewels wearable thoughts
The body ornament is the visualisation of a thought, of states of mind, of sensations aroused by a painting, by music, by a particolar detail of reality. This is the definition suggested when one observes the jewellery created by Maria Rosa Franzin, artist and goldsmith, who received her training at the “Pietro Selvatico” Art Institute of Padua, where she also teaches “Progettazione Orafa (Goldsmith Planning and design). And it is thanks to her teaching commitment at the Pietro Selvatico for years the only school in Italy that has been active in the field of goldsmith research- that was stimulated to abandon her first passion, painting, and choose jewellery.
The change of medium, if, on the one hand required a new awareness of the problems involved in the design and realization of a wearable object, on the other hand has not changed the innate pictorial sensitivity of the artist. Indeed a firm pictorial approach distinguishes all Maria Rosa Franzin’s works, where it is possible to emphasize two principal lines of creative elaboration. The “screenjewel” is composed of gold and silver laminas on which the artist works with oxidation, sanding, engraving, filing, acid baths and inclusions in pure gold. On the surface of the jewel, therefore, emerge images. vision of sidereal space, of boundless territories and landscape, at times even succeeding in evoking expressions of sound, the whistling of the wind, the rustling of leaves.
The protagonist in the necklaces “Hartung” and “Lightness” is the thin steel wire, a graphical sign that infuses the jewels with a slight vibration and at the same time allows it to expand beyond its structural limits, creating a field of forces around the metal elements.

Graziano Visintin : The geometry of gold
I studied the goldsmith’s art at the “Pietro Selvatico” Institute of Art in Padua, from 1968 to 1973, where I studied under Mario Pinton, Francesco Pavan and Giampaolo Babetto, in whose studio I worked for two years. I have been teaching Laboratory/Workshop Techniques at the same institute since 1976. At first, my works were configured as a reduction of shape and volume, where solids lose their mass yet preserving their outline. Primary geometrical elements such as squares, triangles, circles and ovals aligned, criss-crossed or superimposed, confronting the compactness of gold, an element that was never abandoned even when ebony and ivory were used.
Gold has always fascinated me. It is a precious material, not so much for its pecuniary value, but for its characteristics of workability (malleability and ductility) and therefore requires the utmost attention. In the eighties shapes were elongated, emptied, dematerialised to the point of becoming brilliant light. Double elements, criss-crossing traces of gold thread outline necklaces offering points of incidence and reverberation where light creates extraordinary effects.
Circles, squares, triangles are apparently simple elements, but I have been fascinated by them in trying to understand the expressive potential of primary shapes that are always different when observed with attention. The homogeneous continuity of the circle, confronting itself with its centre, recalls the processes of individuation; in the triangle the polarised disparity recalls the value of force and energy exerted in space. In the nineties I added a strong pictorial effect to my works. Niello, obtained by the fusion of silver, copper, lead, sulphur and borax, is an alloy that was well known by the Egyptians. Sometimes I use it as a colour or to contrast the splendid yellow of gold, and then they are beaten laminas, lozenges, trapeziums, that form compound elements.
The minimal absoluteness of shape almost creates writings on the object, and then enamel, made more unique and precious by thin, superimposed gold leaf, integrates with the laminas joined by small cubes that create geometrical relationships of logical, and rigorous design. Measure, equilibrium, simplicity but above all, vocation to geometry creates the quality of shape in apparently simple objects .

EXPO ‘Gioielli d’Italia’ – Pensieri Preziosi 2011 – Oratorio di San Rocco, Padova (IT) – 19 nov.2011-22 Janv. 2012

http://facileblog.it/files/15/files/2011/11/pensieri-preziosi.jpg

http://www.aboutjewellery.it/public/img/articoli/original/immagine-1-5.png

(ConessoMagazine)

EXPO ‘L’insostenibile leggerezza dell’oro’ – Alternatives Gallery, Rome (IT) – 10 Nov.-3 Dec. 2011

Kazumi NaganoMaria Rosa Franzin

L’insostenibile leggerezza dell’oro 10.11 – 3.12 2011

The Unbearable Lightness of gold
Alternatives is proud to present the works of two jewellery artists, Maria Rosa Franzin and Kazumi Nagano, who have been protagonists on the international contemporary jewellery scene for many years. The two artists come from two very different worlds, Italy and Japan, but nonetheless share the same intent in their research, in the analysis of the weight of metals and the lightness achieved in the transformation process. This challenge has brought them to make complex structures formed by the use of tiny specks of gold or thin gold wire interwoven as if it were thread. Two worlds, two cultures, that are confronted on the diverse approaches to manipulating and transforming gold, by excellence the most noble of materials.

http://www.alternatives.it/calendario/Nagano.jpg
Kazumi Nagano necklace

« Kazumi Nagano from Tokyo weaves strands of gold thread into voluminous three-dimensional structures. The artist uses different colours of gold to achieve light and shade effects, giving depth to the pieces. The gold thread is combined with nylon thread to create suppleness, rendering her works soft to touch and facilitating interrelation with the human body. Interesting and unexpected results are attained. The different shades of colour refer back to her years of training as an artist, in which time she used the ancient Japanese Nihonga technique in her paintings.«

http://www.alternatives.it/mostre/mostre/nagano_franzin/13_G.jpg
Maria Rosa Franzin

« Maria Rosa Franzin from Padua uses tiny specks of fine gold on the surface of white or oxidised silver, and by doing so uses gold as if it were paint that she applies to the surface of the metal in the form of brush strokes or tiny dots. This pictorial approach stems from her background at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice where she trained as a painter. Since the early days, Franzin has made use of gold in a very light, airy and insubstantial manner, almost wanting us to forget the heavy nature of the metal. The gold specks almost become intangible, but at the same time are able to capture the light and show us the beauty of its warm natural colour in contrast to that of the dark or white silver it is lying on. »
