piece I have made for Gill Wing Jewellery’s Summer exhibition BEYOND THE BLUE.
The ring has been cast from wax into recycled sterling silver and then I have set an azurite drusy on the side. I had the opportunity to go to London to visit the exhibition last week and it was amazing! More than 50 pieces of BLUE contemporary jewellery made from 50 international artists are exhibited until the end of August. If you happen to be in London, it’s really worth to head to Islington to have a look!  For details on how to get there click here

INSPIRATIONS… Pierre SOULAGES

Marion Lebouteiller - INSPIRATIONS... Pierre SOULAGES

« This month I have been looking a lot at Pierre Soulages‘s work and it deeply inspires me. Pierre Soulages is a French artist born in 1919 who is known as « the painter of black ». Painting with black enables him to bring light into his work. « He sees light as work material; striations of the black surface of his paintings enable him to reflect light, allowing the black to come out of darkness and into brightness, thus becoming a luminous colour ».
Although I use a completely different process and material, the texture I get on my jewellery by stretching the wax resonates with his textures. What I see in his work and what I tend to do in mine is trying to make a shape or create a feeling that the piece has been made within seconds, in one breath. Even though the technique I am using is very difficult to achieve and that it takes a lot of practice and patience (!) I want to show something effortless that praises the instant gesture.
Do look further at Pierre Soulage’s work on the internet, you will be astonished by the quality of his work and look also for his early prints… real gems! »

« Marion draws her inspiration from the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. Today, her background as a sculptor in a bronze foundry deeply influences her approach to contemporary jewellery. She has been experimenting with a sculptor’s wax she heats up then twists and stretches to create stunning pieces later to be cast in silver or recycled gold. The result highlights the unpredictable nature of the warm wax as well as the spontaneity of her gesture and movement while letting the material express itself to its full potential. The perfect high polish of the inside of her rings creates a beautiful contrast with the matte finish and makes them very comfortable to wear. »

« Ringing The Changes is an exhibition of internationally renowned British jewellers designing distinctly modern rings, complimenting both the contemporary and the traditional. Striking rings for all occasions,  including bespoke wedding rings.
The exhibition includes 8 new designers, and new work from current Victoria Sewart Gallery designers. All specialising in rings made from a wide range of materials; traditional, contemporary, precious and affordable. Sustainability is important with the designers using materials that are sourced as ethically as possible. »

Marion Lebouteiller   new works

« I have been experimenting a lot with wax over the past two months. I heat it up in a pan until it reaches the perfect temperature then I twist and stretch it in order to get stunning textures. I love the unpredictable nature of the warm wax as well as the spontaneity of my gesture and movement. The wax cools down so fast that I have to work very fast! This process definitely allows the material to express itself to its full potential! The wax pieces have then been cast in silver, and these earrings have  just been uploaded onto my online shop!«

« Marion explores the relationship between natural and human worlds by combining silver, gold or bronze with natural elements such as mother-of-pearl or felt. …..
I am inspired by my surroundings but also by the Japanese culture and the «Wabi-Sabi» philosophy: the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete. I like leaving space to the unexpected and let the materials express themselves.
My techniques include the lost-wax casting and the casting from natural items into silver, gold or bronze but also soldering, hand piercing, traditional chasing techniques
I combine precious and non-precious metals with mother-of-pearl and textiles as I am very interested in the propensity of felt to highlight the coldness and the stiffness of metal.
All my pieces are handmade, either one-offs or small series, using recycled or Fairmined metals wherever possible, as I am very much into the idea (and the actions) of living on this planet with a minimum impact on the environment and on the life of mining labourers. »

EXCHANGE-BIJOU 1 – Marion Lebouteiller – Beauté de l’éphémère, de l’incomplet, de l’imparfait

I « got the blues » with Marion Lebouteiller ……

« I am a French contemporary art jeweller who now lives and works in England. The pieces I make are born out of my fascination for materials and colours. My background as a chaser and patinateur on bronze sculptures influences deeply my approach to contemporary art jewellery.
Whilst combining silver and bronze I allude to the natural and the cultural worlds and highlight contrasts of colours, textures, concept of full and void… I am inspired by my surroundings and by the Japanese culture and the «Wabi-Sabi» philosophy: the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete.
I like leaving space to the unexpected and tend to let the materials express by themselves, hoping to get the pure essence from them. Experimenting with lost wax casting and patinations processes allows me to materialise my sensitive perception of the world. » (ACJ Org.)
