« It is sad when a mother has to speak the words that condemn her own son. I can’t allow them to think I would commit murder. Put him away now as I should have years ago. He was always bad and in the end he intended to tell them I killed those girls and that man, as if I could do anything but just sit and stare like one of his stuffed birds. They know I can’t move a finger and I want to just sit here and be quiet just in case they suspect me. They’re probably watching me. Well, let them. Let them see what kind of a person I am. I’m not even going to swat that fly. I hope they are watching… they’ll see. They’ll see and they’ll know, and they’ll say, « Why, she wouldn’t even harm a fly…«

B-side DownTownArtJewellery Festival is an energetic, self-created festival for jewellery artists. The 2nd edition takes place from the 3rd until the 6th of November 2011 and brings together a series of jewellery exhibitions and performances in the city of Amsterdam. This event is initiated by min-association; Maaike Ebbinge – Iris Tsante – Noémie Doge,

who graduated from Amsterdam’s Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2007 and 2008.
B-side gives artists the opportunity to explore new ways of showing their jewellery to the world. Each artist is encouraged to take responsibility for his of her own part in a bigger chain or route.
B-side emphasises the festive side of a festival and celebrate the art of jewellery. The aim of the festival is to show different ways of presenting and thinking about art jewellery through exhibitions and performances. It allows exploration of spaces that aren’t usually used for exhibition purposes, for example parks, ateliers, bicycles, empty buildings, a living room, a café or the back of a car.
B-side happens simultaneously with other inspiring jewellery events in Amsterdam.
B-side shows designs that go very much beyond mass-produced jewellery. It shows an artistic way of presenting and dealing with jewellery. The value of this jewellery is not defined by precious metals, but by their visual force and strong concept.
There are many jewellery artists working in Amsterdam. Three of the four most renowned Dutch jewellery galleries are based here, and the jewellery department of the Rietveld Academy is well-k

nown for its active students and teachers. We are very happy to be able to celebrate Amsterdam’s special connection to jewellery with this special platform for art jewellery.
B-side, another side of jewellery.

B-side DownTownArtJewellery Festival is organised by: min-association.com (Maaike Ebbinge, Iris Tsante & Noémie Doge)

Where the heart is

”Strong wind in the face, the sea roaring loudly, lots of curious materials hidden in the sand, my thoughts explore the freedom of space. This is where the heart is, this is where my jewellery pieces are born.” M.E.

“I like working intensively with materials. When the materials start “speaking” and taking their own way, that is where their heart is.” I.T.

“I search for hidden stories by dismantling forgotten relics; I reinvent them picking up the pieces; I’m a treasure hunter, ferreting where their heart is. ” N.D.

The artists have worked in a close dialogue and with corresponding materials like fabric, latex, nylon and foam, but the resulting jewellery pieces show clearly their difference in cultural identity and personal interest.
Set up in the beautiful entrance hall of Alchimia, the exhibition is articulated in two installations referring to the display of ‘organic material’ , one related to commerce (the butcher) the other to curiosity and science (the natural history museum).«

EXPO ‘Märta Mattsson: Rebirth’ – Four, Göteborg (Sweden) – 24 Sept.-15 Oct. 2011

Classé dans : Exposition/Exhibition,Four (SE),Marta MATTSSON (SE),Suede (SE) — bijoucontemporain @ 0:03

Four is proud to present jewellery artist Märta Mattsson. Her exceptional skill to find balance on the edge between the beautiful and the disgusting has made her work well known internationally.

EXPO 'Märta Mattsson: Rebirth' - Four, Göteborg (Sweden) - 24 Sept.-15 Oct. 2011 dans Exposition/Exhibition 276893_123569314411825_1836211932_n

« Sometimes I see beauty in things that other people find strange or are even repulsed by. I become fascinated when there is something you do not want to see and the feeling you get when you do not want to look at something, yet you still do. My jewellery deals with the tension that lies between attraction and repulsion. I take seemingly inappropriate materials, making ordinary and familiar objects seem extraordinary and unfamiliar.« Märta Mattsson

In the 18th century many new breeds of animals and plants were discovered and it was the main era of cabinets of curiosities. People collected rarities because it gave them the feeling of being in the presence of something extraordinary and marvellous. The cabinets of curiosities were not meant to sympathize with the creatures on display, only marvel over their oddity. In a world where not many new and exotic breeds are discovered I use dead creatures in my pieces to evoke wonder. The creatures are transformed and reborn; given a new life as objects of astonishment.

EXPO ‘Brooch / Bross’ – Sterling Gallery, Budapest (HU) – 26 Mai-17 Juin 2011

The Sterling Gallery cordially invites you to an exclusive exhibition, entitled BROOCH, of young contemporary artists.

https://d15cquu4k8zfpu.cloudfront.net/photos/1243/hl.jpg?1304935474

Sterling Gallery located in Budapest (H) organizing an exclusive exhibition, entitled BROOCH in order to create an interactive information exchange, a dialogue, a conversation or a meeting between Hungarian and international artists from different countries.

The jewel as a « household object » has pronounced functional complexity.
It has both a role and a tradition in each community.
It can be inferred from certain eras, cultures, ethnic groups and lifestyles, habits and thinking.
It might be a sign, or a symbol which is answering to a non-asked question.
It can refer to the wearer’s age, identity, the religious affiliation, marital status.
It is the distinguishing sign of the everyday and the holidays, a status symbol.
It is a part of magical and practical function in people’s lives.
A jewel fits the body and it’s present in clothing.
The jewel expresses the relationship between people.
The brooch, brooches have also been made in the Bronze Age, Greek, Roman and in other European workshops.

These had a functional role as indispensable elements of clothing and self representation.
The brooches had the force to join, screw and fix the fabric of the cloth.
The use of the buttons and buckles took the practical role of the brooch away, but in the same time the aesthetic function of the brooch has been enhanced.

EXPO ‘Diamonds & Dead Things’ – MINT, London (UK) – 7-31 Mai 2011

Diamonds & Dead Things Exhibition
an exhibition, recreating the wonder of the cabinets of curiosities of the past.

In the beginning of May we are putting up our first Diamonds & Dead Things exhibition at MINT in London. See all the details on the flyer below… Hope to see you there!

EXPO 'Diamonds & Dead Things' - MINT, London (UK) - 7-31 Mai 2011 dans Exposition/Exhibition

 dans Grande-Bretagne (UK)

Kelly McCallum and Märta Mattsson, graduates of the Royal College of Art are exciting new artists, updating the cabinet of curiosities for a new audience; by injecting their collections with humour, glamour and a twist of Victoriana. Their love of taxidermy and obscuring the expected united these talented artists, to collaborate, starting with a workshop in Poland last summer.

The collection is a modern twist on taxidermy through the use of semi-precious stones and metals that bring the jewellery to life as objects of beauty and astonishment. These miniature objects of delight, feature stones such as black diamonds and pink sapphires or embellishments with gold such as delicate moustaches or glasses, whilst others are encased in golden resins or merged with vintage wallpapers, or sprinkled with luminous malachite creating unique and captivating treasures.

Kelly McCallum’s works explores personalities and humour, naming her pieces with titles such as ‘Lord Alfred Turnbull’ or ‘Lady Willamina Cartwright’ evokes a playfulness; a touch of whimsy, in the case of Lady Willamina Cartwright who sports a moustache. Each piece assumes a personality, allowing the viewer or the wearer to create a story for them. Whether they are a funny little friend on your lapel or a brilliant way to start a conversation, they will capture your imagination.

Examining the tensions between attraction and repulsion through her works, Märta Mattsson hopes to translate ordinary and familiar objects into extraordinary and unfamiliar. Taking reference from the eighteenth century cabinets of curiosities, Märta brings new life to the creatures in her work, allowing her audiences to rediscover their beauty whilst reminding them that once they were considered extraordinary and to be marvelled at.
