SCHMUCK 2011 – ‘A Pieceful Swedish Smögåsbord’ – 17-20 Mars 2011

A Pieceful Swedish Smögåsbord

A Pieceful Swedish Smörgåsbord is a project curated by Diagonal / Sanna Svedestedt &
Karin Roy Andersson.

The exhibition shows the works by 11 swedish artists :
Nina Mårtensson, Hanna Liljenberg, Malin Lövgren, Pernilla Persson, Maria Ylander, Marta Mattson, Lisa Björke, Linda Marie Karlsson, Sanna Svedestedt, Karin Roy Andersson, Ellen Jacobsen Holvik

« Recently a new image of Sweden is spread internationally. Being a country, which often is seen as a rolemodel for its equality and social work, new sides to the story are becoming visible. It is a well-known fact that the suicidal rates in Sweden are unusually high, and that Sweden is one of the countries with the highest numbers of one-person households. These darker sides of the Swedish society have been put into the spotlight partly through the huge literary success of Stieg Larsson. This situation makes us wonder what the image of Sweden is like in the rest of world today.
We – the Diagonal team – have started an art jewellery project where we have invited 9 other jewellers to discuss and give their view of what Sweden in general and, more, specific Swedish woman really are like.
Roles and ideals change over time, and we find it of great importance to share these experiences. How has the image of us affected the way we see our selves? How do we confront the prejudices that we meet in international contexts? Through our jewellery we want to communicate our thoughts and contribute to the international image of Sweden.
We are are right now having meetings with the participating artists where we are discussing the theme and the work. The last meeting was two weeks ago, we came there quite tired after a long week of money-making-non-jewellery work, but we left with a lot of inspiration and motivation. Being part of a network and get other’s opinions on your work can be very stimulating, and to meet with people sharing a similar life situation is a good support in the profession we have chosen.
The participants of A Swedish Smörgåsbord are all young female jewellers  » Nina Mårtensson (Master Degree in Jewellery Art, HDK. Senior designer for Goldsmith brand Jarl Sandin, Göteborg.)

We will soon write more about this group, the project and how it develops.
Keeping you posted!

« Making jewellery from human hair is an old Swedish crafts tradition, which now a days have very few practitioners. During the hard times in the nineteenth century this type of craft was flourishing, and young Swedish women went on business trips through Europe, to make and sell hair jewellery. Their work was a large help in getting their villages back on its feet. The hair jewellery is now out of fashion, but the spirit of the entrepreneurs is very much alive. The blonds are conquering the internet with their blogs, and starting companies with the power of social media. My jewellery is a tribute to what exist under the surface of lips gloss and curls – and a new interpretation of the old craft tradition.«

Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

Wendy Ramshaw und David Watkins © Artists

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

EXPO ‘Homeworks’ – Mint, London (UK) – 18-30 Sept. 2010 – during London Design Festival (LDF)

For this year’s London Design Festival (LDF), mint present “HomeWorks”: a selection of over 80 upcoming and established designers specially chosen for their individual and experimental craft touch.

HomeWorks Pt 5: Jewelry

Marta Mattsson is a UK graduate who is also participating in HomeWorks for LDF. Mattsson says that she sees beauty in things that other people find strange or are even repulsed by. Mattsson’s jewellery deals with the tension that lies between attraction and repulsion.
Mattsson takes seemingly inappropriate materials, making ordinary and familiar objects seem extraordinary
and unfamiliar.

Märta Mattsson – brooch ‘Atlas beetle’ 2010 – Copper electroformed Atlas beetle, cubic zirconias, lacquer, silver

« Somebody once told me,”You make jewellery for children, not for adults”. And when I was a student in Tokyo the Japanese students in my class came up with a new word to describe my work. The word was KimoKawaii and it’s a combination of two words kawaii (cute) and kimoi (disgusting).
I make jewellery for adults but with a touch of inspiration from my childhood. When I was a child I played with stuffed animals, slugs and other living animals. I have always been drawn to both biology and art and in my work I am trying to combine my interests. Nature is a great source of inspiration but so is Pokemon…«

« Rachel Colley is a UK graduate who is currently exhibiting at Mint for LDF. The methods Colley utilized within this body of work reference traditions in baking and the basic rustic knowledge that is passed effortlessly down the generations. »

 dans Moo PIYASOMBATKUL (UK)

« Colley’s intent was to instil a preciousness in the banal via its material transformation, as well as to utilise jewellery’s role as social signifier in order to challenge the public’s preconceived ideas of both the practice of craft and its aims. »

 dans Rachel COLLEY (UK)

« The use of modified roast beef, biscuits, blood, jelly and pie was intended to correspond to cultural crossovers between the classes. This material displacement encourages a response in the viewer, initiating a visual dialogue.  »

« Moo Piyasombatkul is also exhibiting at Mint as part of HomeWorks. Piyasombatkul believes that jewellery is body adornment that creates an impact and changes the way the wearer look. »

 dans SHOP

« The collection was inspired by “new antique” concept by Marcel Wanders. His theory is to give an old-fashioned material (vintage frame) with a dramatic and contemporary twist (monochrome white porcelain Baroque frame). The  eyewear collection creates something unique and memorable with sophisticated sensibility. »

 dans www Klimt02

Piyasombatku chose to work with porcelain because of its purity of white and also porcelain is truly fragile, which is representing luxury, clean and delicacy.

« Extension, prolongation, parasites of the body, these jewels are a hymn of our material lives, between power, social identity and belief charge. These jewels are made of an association of popular image, highlighting the relationship with the body . Two oilcans as balls are an association of a wood nodule and the oilcan shape, connected by a wire they hang directly between the legs as a soap or lubricating boxes.«

Claire Baloge (FR) -  Camel dung, gold leaf, silk (collier en crottes de chameau … j’adore !!)

I have chosen to use camel dung, because  it’s shape and color. Although the use of camel dung in jewelry may provoke it also links: in those (not so) far-away countries, many people are still using these animals, and their excrement, in daily life, while some others, a few miles away , are smoking the cigars of the oil business. I have chosen to use gold because gold is the referential measurement on which the whole world economy is founded. It remains a major symbol for jewelry, almost everywhere around the world. While camels are traditionally emblems of the noble class, in the nomad society, a clear mark of wealth and importance. It seems to be two different temporalities, which are still sharing the same space, coexisting in the same territories.(Claire Balogeexpo ‘I care a lot’)
