Que vient faire un trombone dans un verre d’eau ?
Et du verre brisé dans un bijou ?
Douze artistes bijoutiers s’approprient le verre et le délogent de son quotidien.
Certains se dirigent en cuisine pour tailler dans les verres à boire ou les culs-de-bouteille et revisitent avec audace la nature morte et le camée.
D’autres vont dans la rue récupérer les bris de glace après un accident de voiture. Car le verre est fragile et nous rappelle la vulnérabilité et les dangers de la vie. Le verre se sable pour troubler nos sens, brouiller notre perception : il nous fait douter.
Chez ces bijoutiers, le verre ne manque pas d’humour ! Il se fait exubérant en imitant les pierres précieuses et se moque de notre envie d’apparat. Il sait aussi se masquer derrière d’autres matériaux pour jouer les trompe-l’œil ou les illusionnistes.
Un trombone dans un verre d’eau, par ce proverbe surréaliste Paul Eluard nous rappelle l’importance de l’inattendu.

L’exposition se présente comme un circuit dans les collections permanentes du musée. Soixante-dix bijoutiers et orfèvres-plasticiens sont invités à présenter leurs créations les plus récentes au regard des œuvres du Moyen-Age / Renaissance, XVIIe / XVIIIe siècle, XIXe Siècle, Art nouveau/ Art déco, Moderne et Contemporain, ainsi que dans la galerie d’actualité et dans la galerie des bijoux. Comment se renouvelle le rôle de la parure aujourd’hui ? C’est la recherche plastique, l’audace formelle, l’aspect spectaculaire, la justesse dans la façon « d’interroger » le corps contemporain et de pointer les nouveaux comportements sociaux qui primera dans cette exposition-parcours du bijou en France.

 L’exposition « Dans la ligne de mire » propose un panorama inédit de la création française actuelle dans le domaine du bijou. Déployées au sein des collections permanentes du musée des Arts décoratifs plus de 600 pièces vont témoigner du rôle de la parure aujourd’hui, Des recherches plastiques, de l’audace formelle, de la justesse dans la façon d’interroger le corps contemporain et de pointer les nouveaux comportements sociaux. 55 créateurs de bijoux contemporains indépendants, sont ainsi invites à présenter leurs œuvres les plus récentes dans une scénographie des designers anonymes ponctuée de photographies, de vidéos, de clips d’artistes, de documentaires, de défilés ou campagnes de communication publicitaires.
Il a semblé important de mettre à l’honneur aujourd’hui aux Arts Décoratifs une cinquantaine de talents, émergents ou confirmés, afin de mieux faire connaître les expérimentations, tant au niveau des matières que des formes, menées par ces bijoutiers et orfèvres-plasticiens. Ceux-ci cherchent à inclure le domaine du bijou dans le champ de l’art contemporain, comme une pratique conceptuelle à part entière. Cette volonté les amène à rompre avec les conventions du bijou classique. Formés dans des écoles d’art, ils nourrissent une réflexion personnelle et critique, où l’observation des mutations dans les codes sociaux, les questions de valeur, de statut social, de destination, de genre, d’intimité, va prendre le pas sur les impératifs purement commerciaux ou la simple notion d’accessoire.
Les bijoutiers contemporains sont ceux que le public connaît le moins bien, ces derniers produisant essentiellement des pièces uniques, réalisées entièrement à la main, exposées seulement dans quelques galeries spécialisées, dans des musées d’arts appliqués ou d’art contemporain, en l’absence d’un appareil critique adapté et d’une couverture médiatique efficace. Ces créateurs consacrent toute leur vie artistique au domaine du bijou… Ainsi, leur production se démarque de celle qu’on englobe habituellement sous la dénomination « bijoux d’artistes », ces termes concernant des sculpteurs ou peintres souvent de grand renom, ayant dessiné ponctuellement des bijoux. Il en est de même pour les bijoux de designer qui jamais ne creusent aussi intimement et sur le long terme un vocabulaire personnel autour des multiples références historiques et symboliques du bijou.
« Dans la ligne de mire » consacre également une large place à des créateurs liés au domaine du bijou de couture et de mode, activité fondamentale dans l’histoire des industries du luxe en France, qui constitue un creuset de créativité et d’innovation sans équivalent hors de France. Cet apport original de la création hexagonale dans le domaine élargi de la parure (accessoires, broderies…) est représenté tant par des ateliers semi-industriels de haute-technicité que par des artisans travaillant seuls, qui savent transmettre avec virtuosité des savoir-faire traditionnels rares, complétés par l’apport de nouvelles technologies, au service d’expérimentations incessantes.
Ces deux domaines, l’un délibérément conceptuel et l’autre conçu comme un art appliqué, sont habituellement assez distanciés, leurs acteurs ne se croisant que rarement dans les mêmes lieux d’expositions. « Dans la ligne de mire » est l’occasion de montrer que ces scènes parallèles convergent dans un même imaginaire de la métamorphose complète du corps, liées par un idéal de réinvention perpétuelle des approches techniques, mues par des défis esthétiques visant pareillement à émerveiller, intriguer, voire choquer… Dans tous les cas, c’est la diversité des matériaux pauvres ou riches, la signification symbolique et le parti pris spectaculaire des œuvres qui priment alors.
Enfin, trois maisons de haute bijouterie ou de haute joaillerie ont été sollicitées pour la qualité d’innovation et de renouvellement des codes traditionnels de la joaillerie qu’elles ont su engager, grâce à une collaboration avec des créateurs. La maison Boucheron, dans le cadre d’une contribution exceptionnelle, a rencontré l’anglais Shaun Leane. La maison Hermès développe quant à elle le concept de haute-bijouterie, imaginé par le designer Pierre Hardy. Enfin, chez Dior Joaillerie, avec le travail iconoclaste et fantaisiste de Victoire de Castellane.
« Dans la ligne de mire » a été conçue comme un parcours de créations originales, disséminées dans l’ensemble des salles du musée, placées dans les vitrines au sein des objets, du mobilier et des period-rooms qui constituent les différents départements chronologiques, du Moyen Age à la période contemporaine. Les bijoux entrent ainsi en résonance avec le vaste répertoire ornemental des arts décoratifs : ils seront regardés avec plus d’acuité que s’ils avaient été présentés dans une salle vide uniquement réservée à leur intention. Quelques projets, hors-norme au regard de leur taille ou de leurs matériaux non précieux, sont présentés hors vitrines. Ces installations surprennent le visiteur par un rapport d’échelle et d’espace inattendu dans ce domaine du bijou. Certaines salles sont réinvesties par des artistes associant habituellement le bijou à un scénario (image ou texte) avec des propositions spécifiques mêlant bijoux, vidéos ou photographies.
Pour compléter le parcours, un projet intitulé «Bijoux de parade / Bijoux de combat», déployé à la manière d’un tableau vivant, prend place dans la Galerie d’Actualité du département contemporain. On y retrouve certains artistes déjà présents dans d’autres endroits du parcours, avec des créations inspirées par l’armure, l’uniforme militaire ou le camouflage, imprégnées d’une certaine violence liée à l’affirmation d’un pouvoir. Elles abordent en outre l’actuelle vogue des modifications volontaires de la surface du corps, piercing, tatouage, scarification.
Enfin, plusieurs interventions du designer Arik Levy, inspiré de son précédent projet Crystal Palace pour Swarovski, en particulier de grandes sculptures-cages et des agrandissements photographiques évoquant la taille du diamant, jalonnent également ce parcours du bijou contemporain au sein du musée.

Coral Cohen

 Coral Cohen lives and works in Tel Aviv. She graduated from Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Ramat Gan, Tel Aviv in 2010 and in the year since has participated in exhibitions both in Israel and abroad including The Private Life of Sculpture at the Traver Gallery, Seattle. Consume is Cohen’s new collection of one-off rings and brooches where the mechanical mass-produced chain is chewed-up and then disgorged, turning it back into the decorative feature. Her jewellery is skillfully made and fuses the macabre with the idea of growth and decay resulting in playful, beautiful yet often sinister jewellery / craft sculptures.

 

Lucie Gledhill

Lucie Gledhill is a jewellery designer from London. She studied at the Royal College of Art in 2007-2009 where she developed her passion for chain and love for jewellery-making processes as an experiential medium of expression. With conceptual art influences, her Chain of Thought collection links together handmade solid silver components and the exploration of scale and form. As her work has developed she finds herself drawn to manipulating mass-produced chain to create clean lines and smooth shapes, all the while finding gradual inspiration from the physical act of making.

 

Heela Harel

 Heela Harel lives and works in Florentine, Tel Aviv and is a 2006 graduate of Fashion Design at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Ramat Gan, Tel Aviv. In her years since college she has continued her career in design and has maintained work both in film and production as well as a fashion writer in Ha’ir magazine and columnist in Rating magazine. Her new collection #1 of neon thread and ‘frozen’ linked chain is her first jewellery ensemble from her accessories label Hi! Her work is graphic in nature and is inspired by her travel influences and is an extension of her eclectic career.

 
Liana Pattihis

Liana Pattihis is from Cyprus and since 1980 has lived and worked in London. Her art jewellery stretches the boundaries of what can be achieved with enamel as a medium. With her own unique method of sifting and fusing enamel on a movable base, she often uses silver and gold chain to make necklaces and brooches which ultimately cannot be pre-conceived; each piece is allowed to create itself. In the years since she graduated from Middlesex University in 2007 she has made astounding works for many exhibitions around the world including SOFA (represented by Charon Kransen Arts) and continues to rewrite her signature style and expertise with enamel.
Einat Primo

Einat Primo is from Israel and currently lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. She has participated in a number of contemporary jewellery shows at the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv and won the 1989 Shapiro prize for Judaica during her Jewellery and Metalwork studies at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem between 1987 and 1991. Her work is a curious combination of symbols, texture and motif often resulting in ambiguous forms of jewellery; she crosses boundaries between craft, bead work and metalwork often using pixels and dots to draw and imitate traditional forms or motifs found in popular culture. Her chains follow the pattern of ribbons in their flexibility and take on the form of links in the their repetitive sequences.

 

Maud Traon

 Maud Traon is from France and is a leading international artist in her field of art jewellery. She is an award winner for pushing boundaries in jewellery design and has gained extensive academic and institutional acclaim for her avant-garde designs with her colourful, oversized rings-as-sculptures. Often using ready-made and throwaway plastic toys and glitter, she explores the mixing-together of consumable materials and the idea of longevity inherent in jewellery to produce provocative and seductive objects. Recently selling work at Collect 2011 at the Saatchi Gallery and showcasing in the Electrum Gallery shop window installation project this summer in London, her work is continuing to grow in the UK and France predominantly. La Misere Serait Moins Penible au Soleil (Misery Would Be Less Painful in the Sun) is the title of one of her pieces exhibited in Chained Apart and shows her playful poetic license, merging together mass-produced junk with ideals of beauty and artistically crafting scenarios with unexpected materials.

Entitled Also known as jewelery * by French curators Christian Alandete & Benjamin Lignel shows how the participants jewelry artists choose a critical approach to art history, jewelry and crafts traditions. They invite us out from other disciplines such as anthropology, philosophy, film and architecture, questioning the conventional definition of jewelry.Nathalie Perret necklace with plaster powder leaves a shadow on the necklace and the clothes we wear are the shade. Babette Bouchers work revolves around time and memories often based on found objects as a toy or a fragment of a photo. The lost toy has been a sarcophagus and affects the feeling of regret that we can easily recognize. Amandine Meuniers necklace with intricate designs taken from the doors she had seen on his travels is cut in inner tubes – beautiful and sensual.

Other artists raise questions about gender roles and sexuality that Carole Deltenre with his necklace made up of girls respectively boy toys in plastic. In Frédéric Braham projects Cosmetics is a shift.  It is not the user who is attractive but beauty aids become coveted items in the form of natural-looking lipstick, eyeliner and powder box in silver and gold.

« The main topic of the event is the Mediterranean as the “sea between lands, border and connection sea between these lands”.
The Mediterranean is the line where north-west and south-east of the world meet and a crucial area for the future of humankind.
This point of contact may become, as the writer Samuel Huntington says, “the starting point for dialogue between civilisations”, where common features are mixed with differences and the respect for “diversity” is based on understanding and knowing other people’s nature.
Each community should learn from the others and teach to them: it is possible to break the “game” aiming at creating monolithic cultures only through these connections.
This was probably not understood in the past, but now a defined direction should be outlined and followed to achieve this objective.
Therefore, the “voice” of the Mediterranean is not coming from the past, but from the future, according to that balance between land and sea, belonging and freedom, where a living model does not demonize our need for establishing links or our need for freedom.
If it is true that hope is in the future, then assigning this message to an extremely contemporary and innovative art expression can help us achieving this objective.
This is the reason why Contemporary Jewellery was selected, as this is a sector of advanced research and experimentation halfway between design and tradition, as an expressive language to disseminate this message.
Through Contemporary Jewellery research, it is possible to highlight and give value to the cultural diversities characterising all communities living around the shores of this Sea.
This project has several purposes: promote the cultural heritage that has always characterised the Municipality of Nocciano, i.e. its Medieval Castle and Picture Gallery beyond the regional and national borders.
At the same time, this event includes the possibility to create a tourist-cultural movement between the Mediterranean Village and Nocciano, which are a few km far from each other.  »
