Jewelry in a New Iron Age by 60 International Artists

Velvet da Vinci San Francisco exhibition
March 1 – April 14, 2013
Artists’ reception Friday, March 1, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m.

FERROUS, an exhibition of jewelry using iron, steel, and steel alloys. Although the use of iron dates back more than two thousand years, this humble material is more commonly used for agriculture and industrial purposes than adornment. A significant exception is the Berlin Iron Jewelry of the early 19th century. The Prussian Royal family funded the uprising against Napoleon by encouraging wealthy citizens to exchange their precious gold and silver for intricately fabricated iron jewelry
.Intricacy is just one aspect the 60 artists of FERROUS explore with this versatile material. Known for its strength and lightness, the steel and iron jewelry of FERROUS is both rusty and shiny, sheet and wire, bejeweled and modest. The exhibition will take place simultaneously at Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco and as a virtual exhibition at crafthaus online. In May FERROUS will travel to 18Karat Gallery in Toronto, Canada as part of The Society of North American Goldsmith’s annual conference.

EXPO ‘Silk – Maya Kini’ – Shibumi Gallery, Berkeley (CA -USA) – 2 Fevr.-31 Mars 2013

Classé dans : Exposition/Exhibition,Gal. Shibumi gallery (US),Maya KINI (US),USA — bijoucontemporain @ 20:18
‘Silk’  Maya Kini
Artist Opening Reception  Saturday February 02, 5-8pm

artist talk at 5:30pm
Shibumi Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Sacramento/Bay Area based artist Maya Kini entitled Silk featuring jewelry made using silk, silver, bone, gold, steel, and enamel. The opening will be held Saturday February 2nd with a free reception from 5-8pm and artist talk beginning at 5:30pm. Silk runs through March 31, 2013 at Shibumi Gallery.
Maya Kini speaks through both subject and material to address the cycle of generation, decay and transformation. Taking casts of age damaged silk saris purchased in Benares, India circa 1960 to create jewelry, Kini puts forth new items of luxury while pointing to the history of these once exquisite garments. Silk is a show that confronts the complexities imbedded in the materials of a jeweler. Gold and precious metals are presented as agents in a cycle of collection, use and re-use played out over the centuries. By casting these jewelry pieces, Kini implicates herself in the histories of gold and silk while illustrating a complicated system
that imagines all objects to be linked to one another. Her exhibition of these pieces is an open-ended invitation by which she offers the gallery patron the opportunity to enter into the lives of these objects and continue with their story.
Maya Kini received her MFA in Metalsmithing from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield, MI and her BA in Spanish Literature from Reed College in Portland, OR. Her work was recently featured in the exhibition Maps and Mapping at Tangent Gallery in Sacramento, CA (2012) and internationally at Galerie Louise Smit in Amsterdam, Netherlands (2011). Her work can be seen in a number of publications including 500 Rings Showcase, Lark Books (2012) and The Compendium Finale of Contemporary Jewellers, Darling Publications (2008). She currently maintains a studio practice in Sacramento, CA and is an instructor at the University of California Davis Craft Center, Davis, CA.
