THE RING – the most common piece of jewellery can be full of meaning, a personal statement sometimes showing itself as a technical miracle or purely decorative and beautiful. It can demand attention, be an invitation to play, be filled with tears and secrets – and is to be worn for one day or for ever.
In homage to the ring Galleri Hnoss has invited all the jewellery artists exhibited in the gallery since the start in 1997 to produce one ring each. The result is now to be seen in the exhibition THE RING – jewel forever. The show consisting of over one hundred rings is a vibrant collection of different expressions, thoughts and forms

COLLECT 2011 – at SAATCHI GALLERY, LONDON (UK) – 6-9 Mai 2011

COLLECT has an enviable reputation as a premier, annual fair for contemporary craft. Through its presentation of work from the best international applied artists, COLLECT has become a prestigious event in the international cultural calendar gaining the respect and support of many private collectors, museum curators and galleries.

This year, for the first time, the work of each artist will be complimented by a photographic installation curated by a renowned Italian photographer, Mario Guerra, in which the jewellery on display will be interpreted from an artistic viewpoint, so as to create an ever closer connection between the worlds of contemporary craft and contemporary art.

GALLERIA NORSU takes part in the Collect- art fair for the 5th time.
This year our theme is tradition and re-invention, using traditional methods and materials and treating them with a new twist. The artists approach classic ceramic prints, traditional Finnish rugs and Finnish design glass in a new, conceptual way.
Ceramic artists Caroline Slotte and Kim Simonsson have already successfully been shown before at Collect together with jewellery artist Tarja Tuupanen.
The new names this year are : the young glass artist Riikka Latva-Somppi and the established and well known Finnish glass master Markku Salo, textile artists Silja Puranen (winner of the Nordic Award in Textiles 2009) and the more quiet and conceptual artist Kaija Poijula. Last but not least the jewellery artists Mia Maljojoki and the promising and upcoming talent Sirja Knaapi.

« White is waiting, it is silent, quiet and calm, it is clear and comforting, and frighteningly empty, says jewellery artist Tarja Tuupanen.
Can a blanco portrait tell more than a photo? Is there something more to look at in a white scenery than in he the view from your balcony?
The white cacholong fascinates me. In a natural material all the white shades you can think of. This stone has the perfect atmosphere; it is minimalist and quiet, stagnant but not boring, quite noble even. It looks soft and gentle, but it is not the truth. When you look its whiteness long enough, you start to see some colours.
I do love the northern winter, when everything is covered with snow. It is silent, quiet and calm, clear and comforting and frighteningly empty.

Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

Wendy Ramshaw und David Watkins © Artists

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

Explosive: Frozen Fireworks – Mia Maljojoki

This exhibition is called Explosive: Frozen Fireworks. Fireworks are a momentary explosion to celebrate an event. They produce sound, light, colour, and smoke. Simultaneously, Fireworks produce wonderment, excitement, nostalgia, and inspiration. At the same time, explosions can create fear, anger, and hate. For this exhibition Mia Maljojoki has worked to collect this ephemera to wear them on the body.

Can’t emotion be solid?

Mia Maljojoki was born and raised in Joensuu, Finland. In 2001, she received her BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, USA. In 2010 she received her “Diplom” under Professor Otto Künsli at the Art Academy in Munich, Germany, Also in that year, Mia Maljojoki received the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Award. She is currently living and working as a Jewellery Artist in Munich.

I am a jewellery artist. Using dental plaster, pigments, paint, rubberbands, and strings, I freeze moments to be worn and displayed on the body. My work is formed by motion, mood and play between intention and result. I cast, wash, bite, scratch, throw, scrub, break, and pour. This can last few minutes or can be done in layers taking many months.Mia Maljojoki

MIA MALJOJOKI
EXPLOSIVE: FROZEN FIREWORKS

« Fireworks are temporary explosions to commemorate an event. Sound, lighting, paint and smoke intermingled with wonder, excitement, nostalgia and inspiration. Fireworks are used to heighten an already emotional or significant occasion. In some cultures, fireworks and firecrackers are used as a way to ward off evil spirits at the events like funerals, weddings, inaugurations and the start of the festivities.
Jewellery tells stories and reminds of relationships.
Both Fireworks and Jewellery can be beautiful. They can allow us to flee reality and at the same time, with full attendance, throw ourselves into the spiritual realms of fantasies and emotions.

«  In my jewellery artwork, I capture moments from my daily life in the form of physical objects that can be worn by others. I record subtle spaces in plaster. They are physical expressions of feelings and experiences with that which I use everyday. I reflect on simple common objects such as my bedpost, the doorknob of my favorite café, plastic spoons from the local ice cream shop, visits with a friend, or the touch between a mother and a child. Yet each one defines the horizon of an emotional landscape that I experience daily. I cast my own body and the bodies of friends and family. Each piece has captured a moment of my life, and has a means by which I can connect and reconnect to others.«  (Mia Maljojoki)
