From the Coolest Corner: Nordic Jewellery presents an exciting and broad range of the contemporary studio jewellery created in the Nordic countries. From the Coolest Corner: Nordic Jewellery has a three-fold aim: to present the newest and most advanced contemporary Nordic jewellery, to intensify the discourse on today’s jewellery and strengthen the knowledge about this field, and to consolidate Nordic jewellery’s position in national and international arenas.
Jewellery will be presented in 3 different ways: a touring exhibition, a comprehensive book and an international Seminar Re-Public Jewellery, all shedding new light on the importance of this art. Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden will be the main collaborators in this project.
The touring exhibition From the Coolest Corner was opened at The National Museum – The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Oslo in January 2013. It then travelled to The DesignMuseum Finland in Helsinki, The Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, The Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design in Tallin, The Röhsska Museum of Design and Applied Arts in Gothenburg and The Lithuanian Art Museum in Vilnius.
During “Schmuck 2015” it is shown at the Galerie Handwerk in Munich.
This main exhibition presents 159 works by 61 artists from the Nordic countries including five invited honorary artists and a selected group of artists from Estonia.
The international seminar Re-Public Jewellery will take place on March 13th at the Galerie Handwerk, 10:00-15:00.
To strengthen the interest in and knowledge of art jewellery, artistic tendencies and research within the field will be presented both in the seminar and in the book.
All these different presentations of Nordic studio jewellery together, aim at contributing to reinforce the image of contemporary Nordic Jewellery as expressive, reflexive and “cool”.
The project is a result of a cooperation between the three Norwegian partners (The National Museum –The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Oslo, The Norwegian Association for Arts and Crafts and Oslo National Academy of the Arts) and their associated organizers in the Nordic museums of design and decorative arts, the Nordic crafts associations and the national colleges of art and design as well as, of course, our sponsors Nordic Culture Point, Nordic Culture Fund, Arts Council Norway.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Nordic Culture Point, the Nordic Culture Fund, the Arts Council Norway and Galerie Handwerk of the Bavarian Chamber of Crafts

« The current social/political struggles emphasize the need to rethink and rebuild ways of operating within the society.  Only with the participation of the individuals and their active interaction can eventually occur a change within the collective. This work talks about the position of jewellery in times like these.
kosmos = the world = jewellery = the people
Kosmos has diverse definitions beyond the profound that relates to notions of the universe or the world.
In the Greek language (κόσμος) it has the meaning of order, harmony or beauty.
In old Greek it stands also for jewellery and in neo-Greek usually means “the people”.
By reloading these meanings to the question, its impact changes.
It can evolve to “What will people say?” or “What will jewellery say?”
The title implies several interpretations and sets a bridge between adornment, self-exposure and engagement in the public domain.

The brooches are made out of volcanic pumice rocks. Pumice stones are super-heated, highly pressurized rocks, violently ejected from a volcano millions of years ago. In 2013 the artist took a special permission to visit the quarry on the island Yali/Greece, where she collected the rocks one by one.
She sculpted and textured the surface of the stones by hand  and then hollowed out and assembled them according to their unique measurements and proportions.

The most widely spread function of this mineral is the beautification and cleaning of the human body. This custom denotes the notion of “catharsis”. Depending on context, catharsis (κάθαρση) can have a literal connotation, as well as a metaphorical one. The latter can mean “the purification or purgation of the emotions” primarily through art, as used by Aristotle in the Poetics.
The brooches look up to that notion of catharsis. But catharsis is most of all a condition. Not a given answer.
It’s a process. A process based on the idea that social and cultural reform can occur through individual acts of resistance.
This work is inspired by the notion of the smaller parts working independently,  but also together, in order to reinforc e a change within the whole. Same as in the essence of the kosmos, where the dependence of the whole upon the miniscule is undeniable.
Can jewellery contribute to the social changes?
Jewellery is a powerful medium, because it demands involvement and through this circular function it holds andtransmits a statement.  Therefore jewellery is an active broadcaster within the public realm.
Jewellery as a tool.
Creating a new kosmos by being this new kosmos in practice. Making this choice everyday is essential.
Thinking of jewellery not as an add-on, but as a put out.
An invitation to negotiate reality.

EXPO ‘Dialogue’ – Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h, Montréal (Québec, Canada) – 5-28 April, 2013

Dialogue: International Exhibition Contemporary Jewellery by Emerging Artists

Schmuck 2013 – EXPO 'This is where they met' - Platina at Frame, Neue Messe Munchen, Munich (DE) - 6-12 mars 2013 dans Adam GRINOVICH (SE) 2cd4940625bdbf702de40ee1db72a4baJewellery Sessions offers an online platform for artists from different disciplines. It aims at starting a dialogue, sharing thoughts, exchanging visions and collaborating freely. Hereby focusing on the synergy between a photograph, a piece of furniture, an installation, a jewellery piece, other artworks, and the way these artforms come together through extended research.
The visual, how you see things, how you approach them, how you view them from various perspectives, is a common denominator in how we work with contemporary jewellery today. In fact, we (from our discipline) are mostly interested in people; in things people create, why they create it, who is interested in it, and how people live with exceptional products of individual makers. Jewellery Sessions sets out to contribute to current debates of the notion of contemporary jewellery today as an artform, and its impact in the discourse of visual art and design. Within this context we present a platform for experimentation, reflection, discussion and display, to become more flexible and interconnected.
For Jewellery Sessions 2013, contemporary jewellery artists /artist groups are invited from Europe, Japan, U.S. , Latin America, … to join. In collaboration with a photographer, with similar artistic visions, these invited jewellery artists work towards a photograph. The image shows a narrative view on jewellery and should represent more than a profile as for example in a catalogue. The project is an artist initiative to investigate in and reflect on « crossover thinking » in applied and visual arts and a research in different forms of presentation or display of contemporary jewellery.

BUCKS ‘N BARTER

vernissage  Thu 7/03/2013, 17:30-21:00

Welcome to Bucks ‘n Barter, the showcase for objects and work pieces of 9 international artists in a conversation of values and currency, material culture, symbols, barter and exchange in terms of economics. Simultaneously, take pleasure in event-specific cocktails backed by The Duke, Fritz Müller, and Aqua Monaco on the vernissage.

during SCHMUCK : Bucks 'N Barter The exhibition features works from 9 international artists active in the fields of jewelry, art, craft, product and experience design, with site specific installations, newly commissioned works and a selection of thought-provoking pieces, all together investigating a complex and multifaceted topic, that of the human tendency to trade and exchange and how this has shaped not only the society we live in but also the way we perceive and relate to things and materials.
Key themes touched upon are value and currency, material culture, barter and exchange in terms of  economics, symbols, knowledge and cultures; the relationship between the market and the applied arts, between physical and virtual.
Bucks ‘N Barter is a project initiated by Beatrice Brovia, Nicolas Cheng, Friederike Daumiller and Katrin Spranger.

EXPO ‘FROM THE COOLEST CORNER’ – National Museum of Art, Architecture & Design, Oslo (Norway) – 19 janv.-21 Avril 2013

FROM THE COOLEST CORNER - Nordic Jewellery

from the coolest corner

From the Coolest Corner – Nordic Jewellery presents groundbreaking and fresh jewellery from Northern Europe, a comprehensive selection of current works by artists from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic States. The best and most innovative Scandinavian art jewellery is presented, assessing its possibilities and potential at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
The project presented in this publication, culminating in a symposium and a travelling exhibition, challenges stereotypical notions of northern European art jewellery. Do the typical Nordic trends of the nineteen-nineties still apply today? Indeed are there currently any general trends at all in Scandinavian design? Or has the orientation towards international design become so dominant that there are no longer any regional characteristics?
Renowned experts have made a selection of representative works, as a basis for researching the role of northern European jewellery in the context of international art.

With 160 works by artists from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic States, this publication considers the significance, strategies and trends of Nordic jewellery art in the early twenty-first century. Expert authors present the backgrounds, developments and characteristics of the contemporary jewellery.

EXPO « A Matter of Act – Sustainability in Contemporary Jewellery » – Steinbeisser, Amsterdam (NL) – 1-3 Juin 2012

A Matter of Act – Sustainability in Contemporary Jewellery

matter of ....

Steinbeisser believes in a world that is environmental, social and cultural conscious. Since we all live together on the same planet we feel it is important to be responsible towards the consumption of its resources and the way these resources are being made available for use.
Sustainability and Jewellery
Sustainability in contemporary jewellery is a topic that has been touched upon from time to time however few jewellers know the environmental and social impacts of the materials and techniques they often use.

A Matter of Act
In the exhibition “A Matter of Act – Sustainability in Contemporary Jewellery” the works of Gitte Nygaard, Julia Manheim, Karin Roy Andersson and Nicolas Cheng will be presented.

The focus of the exhibition is to show how these four artists deal with sustainability in their art works. Concepts relating to preservation, recycling, fairly traded and ethically sourced materials run through the jewellery pieces.
Awareness
This exhibition aims to strengthen and accelerate the movement towards sustainable and responsible working standards, and supports a more humane and caring world.

Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

Wendy Ramshaw und David Watkins © Artists

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »
