Snapshot - REVERSO

Snapshot – photography project with Diana Laires:
Words cannot say much about jewellery. You have to see, feel and wear the pieces on the body. You have to live with them. Only then, the pleasure of the thought and made, of the formulated and fabulated with ideas, desires and matters, can irradiate fascination.
What should remain is the joy and the desire to understand and wear these pieces of jewellery as symbols of your own personality. /Jens-Rudiger Lorenzen (adapted) in Contemporary Jewelry, Stuttgart, 1989

LOOT 2012: Mad about Jewelry – EXPO-VENTE – MAD Museum, NY (USA) – 11-15 Sept. 2012

 LOOT 2012: Mad about Jewelry

The Museum of Arts and Design will present LOOT 2012: MAD about Jewelry, its juried selling exhibition of artist-made jewelry for four days this October. Now in its 12th year, LOOT: MAD about Jewelry has become known as the ultimate pop-up shop for contemporary art and studio jewelry by both artists and collectors alike; it affords the public the rare opportunity to acquire pieces directly from some of the most innovative jewelry artists in the world. This year, the creations of 50 emerging and acclaimed jewelry artists will be on sale. Prices will range from $200 to $12,000, with $1000 the average. Proceeds from the selling show will benefit the Museum’s exhibition and education programs. LOOT 2012 (Artists: Nikolay Sardamov) 11-15 sept 2012

LOOT 2012: MAD About Jewelry, the ultimate pop-up shop for contemporary art and studio jewelry, whose proceeds benefit the Exhibition and Education programs of the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD Museum), will run from Tuesday through Saturday, September 11 – 15, 2012.
Unlike any other jewelry event in the country, LOOT 2012 gives jewelry lovers the opportunity to meet some of the most innovative creators in the field and acquire work directly from them. This 12th edition of LOOT will be the largest and most international ever, with jewelry by more than 50 emerging and acclaimed artists, hailing from 12 countries.
It will also showcase the work of jewelry students from New York’s own Fashion Institute of Technology.

LOOT 2012 (Necklace by Emmeline Hastings)
(Necklace by Emmeline Hastings)

Like last year, the exhibition and sale has been curated by Bryna Pomp, a jewelry specialist, and Nancy Olnick, a noted collector; they selected the artists for their originality, use of materials, and expert craftsmanship. Much effort was also made to find distinguished artists from around the world.

Among those in this year’s roster will be the acclaimed German bead artist Axel Russmeyer, who in addition to participating in the exhibition and sale will be awarded the inaugural LOOT Award for Contemporary Art Jewelry. This annual prize is in keeping with the long-standing commitment of the Museum of Arts and Design to presenting jewelry as an art form. MAD is the only American museum to possess a gallery dedicated to the display of both temporary jewelry exhibits and its own collection of contemporary and modern studio and art jewelry, which it began assembling soon after its founding in 1956.

“Axel Russmeyer is an artist whose outstanding achievement in crafting highly original and exceptionally beautiful jewelry sets the standard of excellence for all in this medium,” says Michele Cohen, the Chair of LOOT 2012. “His color and texture combinations and his sense of design take beaded jewelry to another level of the imagination. You have only to see and touch his pieces to understand why his work is coveted by the most prestigious museums and private collectors around the world.”

Other notable jewelry artists participating in LOOT 2012 are:
Eimear Conyard
This Irish artist views jewelry as object as much as adornment. In addition to producing splendid, yet spare pendants, brooches, and rings, she also makes limited-edition timepieces. For LOOT 2012, she will offer a new
collection of timepieces, specifically designed for the exhibition.
Eva Eisler
In Europe, this Czech artist is as well known for her tabletop, lighting, and furniture designs, as for her minimalist art jewelry. The chair of the metals department at Prague’s Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design, she will bring along the work of six of her top students, two of whom will be in attendance.
Emmeline Hastings
A sculptor as well as a jeweler, this British artist works in Perspex and a variety of metals to create wearable objects that evoke the motion and pattern of waves.
Dominique Labordery
Working in agate, oxidized silver, and gold, this Belgian-born, Dusseldorf based artist uses minimalist details to the maximum effect.
Jeremy May
This British artist makes jewelry from carved out book pages, which he laminates and polishes. The excavated tome then serves as the jewelry container.
Kazumi Nagano
The Tokyo-based Nagano brings the sensibilities of traditional Japanese painting to jewelry making. Woven out of strands of silver and gold, silk, nylon, and Japanese paper thread, her jewelry is subtle, yet sumptuous,
and gossamerlike in weight.
Linda van Niekerk
Rare Tasmanian wood and tidal stones, ribbons of sterling silver, chunky discs of African amber, and oxidized Turkomen beads are among the materials from which this master artist, born in South Africa, now based in
Tasmania, makes striking wearable sculpture.
Joe Pillari
This Philadelphia-based artist makes enigmatic hand-painted enamel brooches inspired by old photographs.
Nikolay Sardamov
This Bulgarian artist jeweler creates a rigid meshwork out of clusters and layers of circles in silver and gold. While the geometry is simple, the effect is rich in pattern and density.

Nikolay Sardamov: Intersections

« This newest body of work consists of brooches, pendants, rings and earrings. I use the circle as a basic component and put together three-dimensional forms with six different circle sizes. These forms are built symmetrically, starting from a center and adding and arranging the components in different angles to form clusters and layers. The resulting shape is a rigid meshwork, where the cube can be recognized as the main organizing form.
Building the forms was like a game for exploring variations. I used the same number of components to put together forms with different characteristics: pattern, density and size. The pieces are first built up in wax and then cast in one piece in silver or gold. » Nikolay Sardamov

EXPO '3 from Sofia' - Galeriehaus Grosche, Castrop-Rauxel (Germany) - 16-30 Juin 2012 dans Allemagne (DE) 0139f860a3

Zwetelina Alexieva
I think about my pieces the way I think about living things.
Some of them have a skeleton and a skin, others have twigs and leaves. Some have similar building schemes, but none of them are identical.
The process of making is like growing an organism. I use wax wires and elements to build a structure and to form a shape. My pieces emerge slowly and are sometimes intricate. They need a patient observer and time to be appreciated.

Dimitar Delchev
The inspiration for my works I get from different sources, mostly, from the nature. I’m also getting my inspiration from stores like Bauhaus, Praktiker etc. The transformation of lifeless nets, pipes and other industrial stuff into something else brings about emotions and joy in a playful mode.

Nikolay Sardamov
Butterflies with wide spread wings and beetles with long feelers are arranged in a circle with legs next to each other and form brooches, pendants, rings and bangles. They also occur individually, as an ear stud sitting on the tip of the ear, or as a pin, nonchalantly crawling on the lapel. The insects are their own silhouettes: silver shadows, sometimes gilded or blackened. They sit in symmetric ornaments which grow into three dimensional constructions and resemble flowers in bloom. The beetles and butterflies turn into petals.

And the secret of the garden? Its flowers can spread their wings and fly away.

The exhibition wil open on May 12th, Saturday, at TESTA gallery, 8 Shishman St, from 12 pm to 6 pm, and will run through May 27th.

Simply an adornment, vanity, or an object to wear with a specific message, the ring has the potential to say a lot of things. Inspired by different aspects of life and the world around us, it can show attitude and require attitude, express position, surprise and stimulate both the mind and the feelings. Used as a symbol of power, social status, or religion, in contemporary times the ring is to a greater extent an expression of one’s own identity. Regardless of whether it is made of silver, gold, platinum and precious stones or alternative materials used in unpredictable ways, the ring is eager to say: “I love you, I am beautiful, I am rich, I hate you, I come from Ireland or Austria, I have enough, I am taken, I am funny, I am scared, I am important, I can’t help you. I am.”

EXPO ‘On Repeat’ – Flow Gallery, London (UK) – 8 Sept.-5 Nov. 2011

  »On Repeat »

This exhibition at flow features the work of eighteen international makers. The exhibition explores the creative process which at times becomes meditative; moving from the mind of the maker to an intuitive action. The process of repetition can create or even determine a form. It allows exploration of volume, decoration and pattern. Repetition creates a rhythm and a flow; it highlights difference, irregularity and the history behind surfaces. It is through repetition that you discover difference, through order and an attempt for the constant, variation is emphasized and the unexpected is found in the familiar. Using different materials and patterns; from lines, dots or looping, all the work has the process of repetition in common. The process of making can be a valuable trigger of inspiration. This is echoed in this exhibition, which aims to encourage people to see and enjoy the subtle variations created from a single repeated act.

Artists:
Astrid Keller, Birgit Hagmann, Charlotte Sale, Ella Robinson, Evert Nijland, Flora Vagi, Ike Junger, Iris Tsante, Momoko Kumai, Nikolay Sardamov, Noriko Takamiya, Nuala O’Donovan, Renata Francescon, Ritsuko Jinnouchi, Sidsel Hanum, Stacey Bentley, Stine Jespersen, Tsuruko Tanikawa.

Iris Tsante

Iris Tsante considers jewellery as a process of exploring ways to define the sense of « beauty » and « value » in reference to memories of significant objects and the subsequent human/social connections related to them. Tsante’s pieces provide connotations of optimism, simplicity, joy and innocence, revealing at the same time qualities such as fragility and vulnerability.

Flora Vagi - waves & flames brooch

Flora Vagi creates jewelry which not only adorns the body but explores the visual language of an object. » I search discover, transform…. surprise. The materials get a ‘return ticket’ from me, and with their ‘newly dressed souls’ I send them back to the world, where they came from ».

Nikolay SardamovSense of snow
Nikolay Sardamov has focused on the circle. Through repetitions and overlapping a pattern emerges. He uses the multiplied pattern to arrange figures with different types of symmetry and uses them to construct double-layered forms. The layers cast shadows that overlap and create a notion of movement, like snowflakes falling from the sky.

Momoko Kumai
Momoko Kumai
Momoko Kumai describes her work as « accessing my inner child playing with paper. It is abstract in form – the result of a free-flowing sub-conscious process of folding, twisting and rolling up any kind of paper material ».

http://www.flowgallery.co.uk/images/59/stacey-bentley.jpg
Stacey Bentley
Stacey Bentley is inspired by urban scenery, taking inspiration from its patterns and structures. Being attentive to the unexpected and unnoticed components of this industrial environment allows Bentley to discover an elegant and mysterious aesthetic. Her observations are translated into tactile, sculptural forms that play with line, gritty textures and matt finishes.

http://www.flowgallery.co.uk/images/59/Ike-Junger.jpg
Ike Junger
Ike Jünger uses a variety of materials and techniques from colourful enamel to gold casting and often incorporating found objects. Her work is organic and enigmatic.

http://www.flowgallery.co.uk/images/59/x-EVERT_1.jpg
Evert Nijland
Evert Nijland is fascinated by the way nature is visualized by artists throughout art history. His collection titled ‘Naturae’ is inspired by the many floral motives that are used in classical ornaments.

Birgit Hagmann necklace 2011

Birgit Hagmann. This work is based on drawing. Using the wire, the drawing is
transformed into a three-dimensional space. The line creates shapes and explores volume, sometimes delicately, playfully and searchingly and other times confidently, in a straight, clear and powerful way. Thus crystalline-organic structures come to life and become jewellery.

SODAmore Summer 2011 : Contemporary Art Jewellery Exhibition

SODAmore YAZ 2011 : Çağdaş Mücevher Sanatı Sergisi

http://www.sodaistanbul.com/newsletter/yaz2011/poster.jpg

Once more SODA brings together a group of contemporary artists who use different colours, materials and themes to exhibit their work for the SODAmore exhibition this summer.

“SODAmore Summer 2011: Contemporary Art Jewellery Exhibition,” which was also organized last year, will host many new international artists. This show will challenge you to forget the old contours and styles you were once used to, to be swiftly replaced by deserving contemporary art.

Including approximately 70 pieces, the exhibition will present prominent artists of Contemporary Art Jewellery which has become an acclaimed area of interest for international art collectors who use various materials like glass, metal, rubber, plexiglass, wood, paper, plastic and ceramic.

The exhibition hosts artists Zwetelina Alexieva, Ara Kuo, Ritsuko Ogura, Selen Özus, Lina Peterson, Nikolay Sardamov, Michihiro Sato, Salima Thakker, Flora Vagi and Tanel Veenre. Some rings are made from hairbrushes while some bracelets are carved out of cardboard; ultimately the exhibit will surprise you and make you question the definition of “precious” jewellery.
