Transition by Réka Fekete

Being inspired by different cityscapes within and from above, the emerging artist transfers the constant movement into her jewelry.

 Opening: Saturday, 25. April 2015, 16-18 h

EXPO - Galerie Ra new work by Réka Fekete -(Réka Fekete, Last little bits, brooch, 2015, steel, textile)

Travelling and relocating, and the associated emotional and practical changes: Réka Fekete experiences these intensely.
Leaving things behind and packing, meeting and discovering. Routes, places, buildings and building sites. How do all these relate to each other and to her? Her head is a machine in which outside impressions and the way in which she experiences processes of transition are connected with each other to generate new insights and possibilities. This transition is also evident in her approach to creating jewellery and objects, with maps and routes, constructing and reconstructing. Using individual forms, like letters that have yet to become words. For her jewellery Réka folds and stacks materials such as steel and textile. In her zinc and paper collages she plays with scale, capturing the city as a machine in bird’s eye views.

SCHMUCK 2014 – 66th International Trade Fair, Munich – 12-18 Mars 2014

Schmuck ‘2014
55th Special Jewellery Show
66th International Trade Fair, Munich
de 12 Mar a 18 Mar 2014

This special exhibition is the eldest exhibition of contemporary jewellery work in the world. It takes place since 1959 every year during the International Trade Fair in March. Except the transport cost until Munich the participation in the special show is free of charge for you. Three contributions of Schmuck 2013 will be awarded with the Herbert Hofmann Prize. The prize commemorates Dr. Herbert Hofmann, the founder of the special show in 1959. In addition the jury of the Bavarian States Prize will look at the works in the special show. The Bavarian States Prize is awarded to 10 contri-bution of applied art within all contribution of the International Trade Fair. This prize is awarded with 5.000€.

More than 552 goldsmiths from 43 countries around the globe applied to participate in the special “Schmuck” (Jewellery) show at the International Crafts Fair in Munich next year. This great interest once again confirms the importance of this event in the context of contemporary jewellery-making and the significance attached to it worldwide. An above-average number of applications were received this year from Australia, Japan and Taiwan, but also from New Zealand and Argentina, the latter having been among the applicants for only a few years now. The selection for 2014 was made especially interesting thanks to the many new exhibitors nominated by the curator Jorunn Veiteberg of Copenhagen. Unusually, “Jewellery 2014” features over 25 new exhibitors, who will be represented in this renowned exhibition for the first time.

For the year 2014, a total of 66 participants from 25 nations were invited to exhibit. Numerically most strongly represented are goldsmiths from Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Denmark and Sweden. The applicants grow younger by the year, an indicator that even before or immediately after finishing their training goldsmiths seek to compete in our special show, present their work to an interested public, experts, gallery owners and museum curators, and rapidly find their way into the jewellery avant-garde. “Jewellery” is an important venue for making a name for oneself in international goldsmiths’ circles, establishing contacts, and not least, witnessing the award of the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize on Saturday.

The special “Jewellery” show is characterized by the choice of certain themes which, in the eyes of curator Jorunn Veiteberg, represent salient traits of current jewellery design. As signs of our times and selection criteria, she sees found objects of metal or wood, things that bear definite marks of use, materials that speak an expressive, earthy language, forms and structures reminiscent of architecture, as well as masks, a tendency to mysticism, and forceful color schemes.

Honored as next year’s Modern Classic will be Dorothea Prühl, a goldsmith who lives in Halle. A teacher at Burg Giebichenstein Art College, she not only helped shape an entire generation of young goldsmiths but, over and above her teaching activity, has created an admirable, original oeuvre that holds a very special place within contemporary jewellery design.

Curator of “Jewellery 2014” is Jorunn Veiteberg, a Norwegian art historian who lives in Copenhagen. An arts journalist and exhibition curator, Veiteberg has taught since 2002 at the National Academy in Bergen, Norway. Since 2013 she has been guest professor at the University of Göteborg, Sweden, and chairwoman of the Norwegian Crafts Association. She has published in the fields of contemporary jewellery and ceramics. Veiteberg says it was a great honor for her to make the selection for “Jewellery 2014.” She was especially impressed by the quality of the submissions and their international range. For her as a Scandinavian, it was an enriching experience to see so many submissions from South Korea, Japan, Argentina, the U.S., and many other countries from around the world.

The Handwerkskammer organizes the special shows Exempla, Talente, Modern Masters and Schmuck at the International Handwerksmesse München with the Herbert-Hofmann-Award 2014 ceremony on Saturday 15th March at 4 p.m. We will show in our Galerie Handwerk the exhibition WUNDERRUMA – Jewellery from New Zealand.

EXPO ‘Réka Fekete : Balance’ – Galerie Ra, Amsterdam (NL) – 25 Mai-10 Juill. 2013

Réka Fekete : Balance

Réka Fekete: Balance Artists: Réka Fekete Management: Paul Derrez Place: Galerie Ra (Amsterdam, Netherlands) 25-May-2013 - 10-Jul-2013 website: www.galerie-ra.nl(Réka Fekete, Satellite#1151, brooch, 2012, steel, silver)

‘In the Balance collection I draw with the material and explore connections: I look at how each individual component can be coupled to the next link. This creates different spontaneous compositions and creations mainly in steel and coloured wood which are linked together by silver rivets. The components can be juxtaposed with each other in different ways, thereby finding a new sense of balance. This dynamic adds character to the pieces, just like the bright colours and the irregular organic forms do. To touch and explore the various possibilities of movement is to engage in contact, a form of introduction between the onlooker and the jewellery, in order to be fellow companions ultimately.’  Réka Fekete

interview by AJF Blog :
« Why is your show called Balance?
Réka Fekete: « As well as in my previous series, I am experimenting with movement within these pieces. Movement stands for personality, for the ever-changing quality of life, and for the freedom in it. The way I connect the elements gets special attention this time. The connection itself becomes so prominent that it appears to be the main element. Other times, the elements fit into each other and are hammered together so an extra connecting element is no longer needed. Within the construction of each piece there is a lot of mobility and different ways of wearing it. This mobility also expresses how I am in my life. At any moment I might change my mind and take a new path in order to maintain my balance, which I think is one of the most fundamental aspects of life. No matter how much you reduce and consolidate as long as the components of each side remain in balance you will be fine. I see the act of preserving this balance as an exchange. It is simply the way we live and just like the different kinds of relationships that exist between people. »
How does this new work differ from the work you were doing last year?
Réka Fekete:  » I am drawing a lot, and I felt the need to integrate it into my three-dimensional work. While putting the pieces together, I felt like I was drawing. There are black lines of steel connecting colored surfaces of wood or laminate. White wooden parts get blackened little by little as the steel rubs up against it. It ends up looking like charcoal on paper.
For my installation at Galerie Ra, I added some drawings on the wall as well. I wanted the wall to be more than an object upon which the pieces are presented. Acting like a huge piece of paper, the wall becomes part of the work, connecting the pieces and bridging the surfaces and the jewelry. In this series of work, I began to paint on the wood with my fingers instead of spraying each piece with one color. This process allowed me to discover a very liberating way of interacting with my materials. I think I was able to bring similar effects to the wall of the gallery. Overall, this new body of work has evolved graphically, especially within the shadows where the linearity of the steel is constantly reflected. »

Jewelry in a New Iron Age by 60 International Artists

Velvet da Vinci San Francisco exhibition
March 1 – April 14, 2013
Artists’ reception Friday, March 1, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m.

FERROUS, an exhibition of jewelry using iron, steel, and steel alloys. Although the use of iron dates back more than two thousand years, this humble material is more commonly used for agriculture and industrial purposes than adornment. A significant exception is the Berlin Iron Jewelry of the early 19th century. The Prussian Royal family funded the uprising against Napoleon by encouraging wealthy citizens to exchange their precious gold and silver for intricately fabricated iron jewelry
.Intricacy is just one aspect the 60 artists of FERROUS explore with this versatile material. Known for its strength and lightness, the steel and iron jewelry of FERROUS is both rusty and shiny, sheet and wire, bejeweled and modest. The exhibition will take place simultaneously at Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco and as a virtual exhibition at crafthaus online. In May FERROUS will travel to 18Karat Gallery in Toronto, Canada as part of The Society of North American Goldsmith’s annual conference.

Monochrome Noir features work that boldly flaunts deep fields of black and that is punctuated with the perfect placement of a single color. These contemporary jewelry artists rely on the sleek, darker side of the monochromatic view. Often using found or recycled materials, much of this work presents a narrative inspired by geography, architecture, historical motifs, and decorative arts. The exhibition installation will also include portraits featuring the jewelry from Monochrome Noir by North Carolina photographer Becky Parker. This collection of jewelry and portraits alternates between punk and formal, irreverent and elegant. The show includes 22 artists from the United States, Estonia, and The Netherlands.

EXPO ‘Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker’ – Caroline Van Hoek gallery, Bruxelles (BE) – 4-23 Aout 2012

« Butcher, Baker, Candlestick maker »   – Caroline Van Hoek gallery  (Brussels, Belgium)  04-Aug-2012 – 23-Aug-2012

A project generously hosted by Caroline Van Hoek gallery to promote young work in contemporary jewelry. Works by Cranbrook Academy of Art, USA.
The breakdown of material-specific practice is an opportunity to acknowledge and re-engage the long-standing culture of borrowing within the maker’s studio. This exhibition examines the loss in reducing our identity as makers from goldsmiths, silversmiths, blacksmiths, and whitesmiths to generalized “metalsmiths” and the gain in casting lines to outside archetypes as concepts continue to override materials in our collective system of making. Now, in addition to our traditional practices, we are dissecting carcasses, hanging cuts to cure, greasing our molds, kneading and salting our dough, dipping and re-dipping our waxes in order to glean foreign phrases from exterior societal crafts whose methods increase the potency of our own.

FLOURISH exhibition - 'Wine Leaf' brooches by Akiko Kurihara in silver and glass cut from wine bottles‘Wine Leaf’ brooches by Akiko Kurihara in silver and glass cut from wine bottles

« Things are flourishing in the jewellery garden ….giant porcelain cabbage necklaces, cut glass ‘Wine Leaf’ brooches, overblown bright blue enamel blossom jewels…

With an international reputation for showcasing the best in radical contemporary jewellery, Kath Libbert Jewellery Gallery, based at Salts Mill since 1996, marks her sixteenth birthday with flair! Flourish exhibits a fantastical array of art jewellery selected from around the globe.

From Dutch artist Nina Sajet’s surreal transformation of cabbages and sprouts into fine porcelain neckpieces, to South Korean Seulgi Kwon’s marvellous delicately tinted intricate silicone organisms that come to life when touched and worn. Textile inspired Francisca Bauza from Germany and Mallorca presents vibrant enamelled floral necklaces whose folds in metal and crimped edges mimic material; Yu-Ping Lin from Taiwan creates playful Origami inspired textile brooches that mutate into bracelets and back again – like jewellery ‘Transformers’- they can be worn in a myriad of different ways!

Additionally 100 international jewellers involved with the gallery over the last sixteen years have been invited to each enter an exuberant celebratory ring into a flamboyant competition called FlourishRing! Visitors to the gallery will be able to vote for their favourite by trying it on and being photographed modelling it. These photos will then become part of a growing installation on the walls of the gallery. The FlourishRing that gets the most public votes during the exhibition will win £250.

The gallery has represented a host of fantastic jewellers over the years including many renowned award winning UK and international art jewellers for instance Jacqueline Mina, OBE who is a Jerwood Prize winner, Georg Dobler twice winner of the Herbert Hoffman Prize – the most prestigious international art jewellery award, Adam Paxon – winner of the Jerwood Prize and the Herbert Hoffman prize and Malcolm Morris who created the tiaras worn by Gwyneth Paltrow in ‘Shakespeare in Love’.

Kath Libbert, the gallery’s founder and curator says: ‘’We are honoured that these celebrities of the jewellery world are all going to be taking part in FlourishRing along with many new creative talents. I can’t wait to see what they each come up with!!”

COUP de … ROUGE avec Réka FEKETE

« In my work I use zinc plates as “building stones” by randomly sawing and assembling them. Each plate has its special texture, colour and shape. It connects my fascination for spaces and old objects. My recent work includes a collection of wearable objects made out of zinc, additional woven elements and lately I have started using paint and shrinking plastic. From these different materials spaces and imaginary figures arise.
Small details give the pieces character/personality. Details of a journey between inside-oudside, showing- hiding. The wearer decides what to show and what to hide. Who do you let in your world? »  (Réka FEKETE)

« In my work I use old etchingplates of other artists. These etchingplates are full of the marks, drawings and skrechtes that those artists made. Sometimes there is even some colour remains of the printing. The presence of history/time in the material brings us closer to the world of another, to a world that also could be ours. The tracks in the material are like the tracks that are left behind in a house by the occupant. By the obtained colour and patina personality and intimacy will arise.
Like a house tells the story of its occupant a jewel tells the story of the wearer without words. By wearing an object one can build up a more personal link with it.
You move together with the object, it becomes a part of yourself. »
