This special exhibition is the eldest exhibition of contemporary jewellery work in the world. It takes place since 1959 every year during the International Trade Fair in March. Except the transport cost until Munich the participation in the special show is free of charge for you. Three contributions of Schmuck 2013 will be awarded with the Herbert Hofmann Prize. The prize commemorates Dr. Herbert Hofmann, the founder of the special show in 1959. In addition the jury of the Bavarian States Prize will look at the works in the special show. The Bavarian States Prize is awarded to 10 contri-bution of applied art within all contribution of the International Trade Fair. This prize is awarded with 5.000€.

More than 552 goldsmiths from 43 countries around the globe applied to participate in the special “Schmuck” (Jewellery) show at the International Crafts Fair in Munich next year. An above-average number of applications were received this year from Australia, Japan and Taiwan, but also from New Zealand and Argentina, the latter having been among the applicants for only a few years now. The selection for 2014 was made especially interesting thanks to the many new exhibitors nominated by the curator Jorunn Veiteberg of Copenhagen. Unusually, “Jewellery 2014” features over 25 new exhibitors, who will be represented in this renowned exhibition for the first time.

For the year 2014, a total of 66 participants from 25 nations were invited to exhibit. Numerically most strongly represented are goldsmiths from Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Denmark and Sweden. The applicants grow younger by the year, an indicator that even before or immediately after finishing their training goldsmiths seek to compete in our special show, present their work to an interested public, experts, gallery owners and museum curators, and rapidly find their way into the jewellery avant-garde. “Jewellery” is an important venue for making a name for oneself in international goldsmiths’ circles, establishing contacts, and not least, witnessing the award of the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize on Saturday.

The special “Jewellery” show is characterized by the choice of certain themes which, in the eyes of curator Jorunn Veiteberg, represent salient traits of current jewellery design. As signs of our times and selection criteria, she sees found objects of metal or wood, things that bear definite marks of use, materials that speak an expressive, earthy language, forms and structures reminiscent of architecture, as well as masks, a tendency to mysticism, and forceful color schemes.

Honored as next year’s Modern Classic will be Dorothea Prühl, a goldsmith who lives in Halle. A teacher at Burg Giebichenstein Art College, she not only helped shape an entire generation of young goldsmiths but, over and above her teaching activity, has created an admirable, original oeuvre that holds a very special place within contemporary jewellery design.

Curator of “Jewellery 2014” is Jorunn Veiteberg, a Norwegian art historian who lives in Copenhagen. An arts journalist and exhibition curator, Veiteberg has taught since 2002 at the National Academy in Bergen, Norway. Since 2013 she has been guest professor at the University of Göteborg, Sweden, and chairwoman of the Norwegian Crafts Association. She has published in the fields of contemporary jewellery and ceramics. Veiteberg says it was a great honor for her to make the selection for “Jewellery 2014.” She was especially impressed by the quality of the submissions and their international range. For her as a Scandinavian, it was an enriching experience to see so many submissions from South Korea, Japan, Argentina, the U.S., and many other countries from around the world.

The Handwerkskammer organizes the special shows Exempla, Talente, Modern Masters and Schmuck at the International Handwerksmesse München with the Herbert-Hofmann-Award 2014 ceremony on Saturday 15th March at 4 p.m. We will show in our Galerie Handwerk the exhibition WUNDERRUMA – Jewellery from New Zealand.

Un peu de terre sur la peau

Poursuivant une programmation prospective dans le domaine de la céramique contemporaine, après « Petits bouleversements au centre de la Table » en 2008 et « Circuit Céramique » en 2010, les Arts Décoratifs, en partenariat avec la Fondation d’entreprise Bernardaud, ont souhaité s’intéresser à l’utilisation que font certains artistes bijoutiers du matériau céramique. L’exposition « Un peu de terre sur la peau » a été conçue à partir d’œuvres très récentes, qui interrogent les codes ancestraux du bijou pour les projeter dans des perspectives nouvelles. Les 18 jeunes créateurs sélectionnés font souffler un vent de transgression sur ce domaine encore très attaché aux traditions. D’origine française, suisse, allemande, finlandaise, hollandaise, suédoise ou taiwanaise, ils proposent en 140 pièces marquantes leur vision iconoclaste du corps et de la parure.

Unlike traditional jewellery, the traditional craft of the goldsmith, since the 1970s contemporary jewellery has become a field of experimentation at the frontiers of art, design and the artistic crafts. In this exhibition, eighteen French, Swiss, German, Finnish, Swedish and Taiwanese, artists are proposing a new and personal vision in their work. Although some pieces were conceived in reference to the history of jewellery, they can be made with the most diverse materials, using every possible assemblage process, in function of the techniques, symbols and the culture during a given period. This exhibition, conceived by the Fondation Bernardaud, is being shown in the museum’s Contemporary Space.

A la différence du bijou classique – conçu comme un art appliqué, selon des techniques d’orfèvre et avec des matériaux généralement précieux – un « nouveau bijou » a émergé depuis les années 1970, caractérisé par son hybridité et conçu comme un lieu d’expérimentation, installé aux frontières de l’art et du design. Ce ne sont plus seulement les questions liées au coût des matériaux et au statut social qui sont posées par ces nouveaux artistes bijoutiers, mais plutôt le positionnement culturel du bijou en tant qu’oeuvre d’art, en relation au corps. Le bijou est redéfini par eux comme une pratique pleinement intégrée aux arts plastiques.
Depuis toujours, le bijou a joué un rôle d’indicateur social, traduisant une appartenance à un groupe et intégrant l’homme dans la société, mais pouvant marquer également une volonté de différenciation, de contestation de l’ordre établi. Parure intime donc « singulière », le bijou parle de notre corps, des liens qu’il tisse avec autrui et avec l’environnement. Les bijoux n’ont pas toujours été fabriqués en or, en argent ou en pierres précieuses. Ils peuvent également être conçus avec des matériaux les plus divers et grâce à tous les assemblages possibles, en fonction des techniques, des symboles et de la culture en vigueur à une époque donnée. Depuis la réalisation de bagues sigillaires en faïence dans l’Égypte ancienne, ou d’ersatz en terre cuite dorée imitant l’or dans la Grèce et la Rome antique, la céramique a été abandonnée et oubliée pendant des siècles dans le domaine du bijou. C’est en 1773, en Angleterre, que son emploi resurgit lorsque Joshiah Wedgwood inventa une pâte de grès fin constituée de différentes strates colorées qui imitait parfaitement le jaspe, pour des bijoux aux motifs néoclassiques ou des sujets romantiques en camées. Dans l’époque contemporaine, c’est au créateur hollandais Peter Hoogeboom que l’on doit d’avoir réconcilié de la façon la plus novatrice le grès ou la porcelaine avec le bijou, à partir de 1994. A cette réapparition remarquée, fait suite l’excellente initiative de l’European Keramiek Work Centre (EKWC), situé à ‘s-Hertogenbosch aux Pays-Bas, qui a proposé à de nombreux orfèvres contemporains des résidences de trois mois, leur permettant de travailler toutes les possibilités de mise en forme de la céramique dans le domaine du bijou.
Parmi les différents matériaux céramiques disponibles, c’est la porcelaine qui a le plus souvent aujourd’hui la faveur des artistes du bijou. Qu’elle soit utilisée par modelage ou moulage, seule ou en association avec le métal, le bois ou la pierre, la porcelaine peut changer d’apparence, de couleur et de surface. Lisse et pure, à la fois fragile et de grande résistance, elle épouse toutes les formes recherchées à condition d’en maîtriser les techniques et les contraintes, particulièrement celle liée à sa forte rétraction lors de la cuisson. Encore largement liée dans notre imaginaire aux arts de la table ou à la froideur technologique du matériel scientifique, la porcelaine peut aussi devenir un objet de désir, un déclencheur de sensations visuelles et physiques, lorsqu’elle est transformée en bijoux, en s’adaptant parfaitement aux exigences conceptuelles et poétiques des créateurs d’aujourd’hui. La preuve en est faite avec un peu de terre sur la peau…
Le projet Un peu de terre sur la peau… a été initié par la Fondation d’entreprise Bernardaud : l’exposition a été présentée à Limoges du 16 juin au 16 octobre 2010, puis a voyagé au Museum of Arts and Design à New York (USA), du 15 mars au 4 septembre 2011) et au New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum à Taipei (Taïwan), du 30 décembre 2011 au 5 février 2012.

« Between body and spirit.
Flat, amorphous shapes in subdued shades of dark-grey. Ruudt Peters’ new jewellery appears to be austere and abstract until the eye is drawn to the occasional sharp edges, or intentionally modelled surfaces. Peters is always on a quest for spirituality in his work as his earlier work has demonstrated. One line of approach he did not consider in the past was Christianity. Was it too predictable a choice, or was it too close for comfort in the artist’s view?
From the abundance of motifs Peters chose what lies at the heart of Christianity: Jesus as the saviour of mankind. For a thousand years artists have searched for an apt representation of the crucifixion: from the simplicity of Romanesque depictions to an increasingly explicit image of a virtually naked man. The body of the Christ figure becomes increasingly pronounced: muscles starting to develop, the abdomen curving, the loincloth losing its innocence. The religious symbol takes on increasingly complex meanings.
It was a challenge for Ruudt Peters to add his own interpretation to this iconography. In a study in which the crucifix was initially sawn into bits and pieces and then joined together again instinctively, the artist was not only guided by religious connotations. Other aspects present themselves: the meeting of bodies, expressiveness of touch, intimacy. In the final product Peters stresses abstract, veiled shapes on the front and keeps the recognizable parts for the sides and back.
Western society is becoming increasingly secularized, and Ruudt Peters CORPUS jewellery hits the spectator like a bolt out of the blue. At its first presentation at the COLLECT art fair the reactions were unusually outspoken. Curiosity, amazement and appreciation competed for first place, often combined with wariness about the wearability of the pieces. For should you judge this work on the basis of the artistic stament made by the maker, or as a personal testimony? Is it about body or spirit? In his work the artist extends a hand to the spectators, ultimately it is their responsibility to provide an interpretation and decide on the value of a work of art. «   Ward Schrijver  (© Galerie Rob Koudijs)

THE RING – the most common piece of jewellery can be full of meaning, a personal statement sometimes showing itself as a technical miracle or purely decorative and beautiful. It can demand attention, be an invitation to play, be filled with tears and secrets – and is to be worn for one day or for ever.
In homage to the ring Galleri Hnoss has invited all the jewellery artists exhibited in the gallery since the start in 1997 to produce one ring each. The result is now to be seen in the exhibition THE RING – jewel forever. The show consisting of over one hundred rings is a vibrant collection of different expressions, thoughts and forms

In connection with the exhibition on September 9 we are also arranging aseminar : The Ring – jewel forever. The theme is the ring seen from different perspectives. We are very proud to announce the speakers: Anna Schetelich from Galerie Oona, Germany, Professor Otto Kunzli, Germany, and Manuel Vilhena, jewellery artist from Portugal. Moderator is Love Jönsson, crafts critic and guest lecturer at HDK, University of Gothenburg. The seminar is a collaboration between Galleri Hnoss and the Department of Jewellery Art at HDK, with support from Gothenburg Crafts Association, Estrid Ericsson’s Foundation, Wilhelm and Martina Lundgren Fund, and the family Wikanders Foundation.

La Fondation d’entreprise Bernardaud organise une exposition autour d’une discipline artistique injustement trop peu connue en France : le bijou contemporain.
150 œuvres en céramique, fortes et exigeantes, prêtées par 18 artistes de diverses nationalités, interrogent les codes d’une expression artistique ancestrale pour les projeter dans des perspectives nouvelles. À la différence du bijou traditionnel, travail d’orfèvre rattaché à la famille des arts appliqués,le bijou contemporain, depuis les années 1970, devient un champ d’expérimentation aux frontières de l’art, du design et des métiers d’art.

« Cette année, la Fondation d’entreprise Bernardaud organise une exposition autour d’une discipline artistique injustement trop peu connue en France : le bijou contemporain. Présentées à Limoges du 16 juin au16 octobre 2010, cent cinquante oeuvres en céramique, fortes et exigeantes, prêtées par les artistes, interrogent les codes d’une expression artistique ancestrale pour les projeter dans des perspectives nouvelles.
À la différence du bijou traditionnel, travail d’orfèvre rattaché à la famille des arts appliqués, le bijou contemporain, depuis les années 1970, devient un champ d’expérimentation aux frontières de l’art, du design et des métiers d’art. D’origine française, suisse, allemande, finlandaise, hollandaise, suédoise, taïwanaise, dix-huit artistes nous proposent, à travers leur oeuvre, une vision renouvelée et personnelle. Si certaines sont conçues en référence à l’histoire des arts et aux nombreuses traditions attachées au bijou, d’autres, en réinventant leurs positions, leurs discours, leurs matériaux, s’en affranchissent totalement. Depuis toujours, le bijou joue un rôle d’indicateur social traduisant une appartenance à un groupe ou une volonté de différenciation, de contestation de l’ordre établi. Parure intime et singulière, le bijou est un objet qui parle du corps, des liens tissés entre les humains et des liens tissés entre l’humain et la nature. Comme cette exposition le démontre, et comme cela a été dans l’histoire du bijou, ceux-ci peuvent être conçus avec les matériaux les plus divers, grâce à tous les assemblages possibles, en fonction des techniques, des symboles et de la culture en vigueur à une époque donnée.
Depuis la réalisation de bagues sigillaires en faïence dans l’Égypte ancienne, ou d’ersatz en terre cuite dorée imitant l’or dans la Grèce et la Rome antique, la céramique a été abandonnée et oubliée pendant des siècles dans le domaine du bijou. C’est en 1773, en Angleterre, que son emploi resurgit lorsque Joshiah Wedgwood invente une pâte de grès fin constituée de différentes strates colorées qui imite parfaitement le jaspe, pour des bijoux aux motifs néoclassiques ou des sujets romantiques à la manière des camées.
Aujourd’hui, c’est au créateur hollandais Peter Hoogeboom que l’on doit d’avoir réconcilié de la façon la plus novatrice le grès ou la céramique avec le bijou, à partir de 1994. À cette réapparition remarquée, fait suite l’excellente initiative de l’European Keramiek Work Centre (EKWC), situé aux Pays-Bas, qui a proposé à de nombreux orfèvres contemporains des résidences leur permettant de travailler toutes les possibilités de mise en forme de la céramique dans le domaine du bijou.
Parmi les différents matériaux céramiques disponibles, c’est aujourd’hui la porcelaine qui a la faveur des artistes du bijou. Qu’elle soit utilisée par modelage ou coulage, seule ou en association avec le métal, le bois ou la pierre, la porcelaine peut changer d’apparence, de couleur et de surface. Lisse et pure, à la fois fragile et de grande résistance, elle épouse toutes les formes recherchées à condition d’en maîtriser les techniques et les contraintes, particulièrement celle liée à sa forte rétraction lors de la cuisson. Encore largement liée dans notre imaginaire aux arts de la table ou à la froideur technologique du matériel scientifique, la porcelaine peut devenir aujourd’hui un objet de désir, un déclencheur de sensations visuelles et physiques, en s’adaptant aux exigences conceptuelles et poétiques du bijou contemporain.
