Ritsuko Ogura

Congrats to all the artists who made the SCHMUCK 2016 list, on show at the Handwerksmesse  during #munichjewelleryweek  24/02–1/03/2016

Ritsuko Ogura (Born in Osaka in 1951) uses cardboard to make jewellery, giving new life to a material that is normally used for packaging and then discarded after use. She is attracted to the idea that cardboard does not catch people’s attention as a material in itself, as opposed to Japanese paper that is inherently beautiful, so she is able to give this poor material dignity by transforming it into wearable sculptures. She exploits the difficulty encountered in cutting cardboard to her advantage, using this drawback to create new modes of expression. The finished pieces resemble delicate lace-like structures, with the inclusion of colour in some parts, or simply left the natural brown of the original cardboard used. Ogura has in time mastered this humble material and skilfully creates voluminous pieces to be worn or simply admired. (No-gram)

born in Japan in 1951. After graduation at Tezukayama Women’s College she study jewelry under the leadership of Minato Nakamura. Her work has taken part in exhibitions internationally, and received major awards. Ritsuko’s works are made with cardboard, poor material and intended to discard. With her ability and extraordinary sensitivity in the processing of the surface and the use of color, she creates pieces of high design, to wear or even just to admire.

Klassiker der Schmuck 2012
Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen, Deutschland

This year there will be a retrospective exhibition of the work of a « Modern Classic » designer. In 2012 the chosen designer is the German goldsmith Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen. Together with Francesco Pavan, Lorenzen was the first goldsmith to be awarded the Herbert Hofmann Prize, back in 1973. The award presentation ceremony, which this year is being held on Saturday, 17 March 2012, is always one of the highlights at SCHMUCK. Lorenzen, who was born in 1942 in Hagen, Westphalia, taught at the « Staatliche Zeichenakadamie » in Hanau from 1974 to 1985, while also acting as a visiting lecturer at the « Hochschule für Gestaltung » in Pforzheim, at which college he then, in 1985, took up an appointment as a professor. He continued to teach there in the jewellery design department until retiring in 2008.

“Schmuck-Show 2012” is a jewellery presentation with professional models, set in an exceptional light and sound design. With the cooperation of several artists who exhibit their works at different places in Munich during these ‘Jewellery Days’, on the evening before the start of the trade fair jewellery is being presented directly on the body. The jewellery stirs emotions and prompts diverse conversations. At the bar, artists, jewellery lovers and laymen meet; there is room for an animated exchange. EXPO ‘SODAmore summer 2011′ – SODA, Istanbul (TR) – 24 Juin-26 Aout 2011

SODAmore Summer 2011 : Contemporary Art Jewellery Exhibition

http://www.sodaistanbul.com/newsletter/yaz2011/poster.jpg

Once more SODA brings together a group of contemporary artists who use different colours, materials and themes to exhibit their work for the SODAmore exhibition this summer.

“SODAmore Summer 2011: Contemporary Art Jewellery Exhibition,” which was also organized last year, will host many new international artists. This show will challenge you to forget the old contours and styles you were once used to, to be swiftly replaced by deserving contemporary art.

Including approximately 70 pieces, the exhibition will present prominent artists of Contemporary Art Jewellery which has become an acclaimed area of interest for international art collectors who use various materials like glass, metal, rubber, plexiglass, wood, paper, plastic and ceramic.

The exhibition hosts artists Zwetelina Alexieva, Ara Kuo, Ritsuko Ogura, Selen Özus, Lina Peterson, Nikolay Sardamov, Michihiro Sato, Salima Thakker, Flora Vagi and Tanel Veenre. Some rings are made from hairbrushes while some bracelets are carved out of cardboard; ultimately the exhibit will surprise you and make you question the definition of “precious” jewellery.

« Ritsuko Ogura uses cardboard in her jewellery giving new life to a material that is normally used for packaging and then discarded after use. She is attracted to the idea that cardboard does not catch people’s attention as a material in itself, as opposed to Japanese paper that is inherently beautiful, so she is able to give this poor material dignity by transforming it into sculptures for the body. She exploits the difficulty in cutting cardboard to her advantage, using this drawback to create new modes of expression. The finished pieces resemble delicate lace-like structures, with the inclusion of colour in some parts, or simply left the natural brown colour of the original cardboard used. Ogura has in time mastered this humble material and skilfully creates voluminous pieces to be worn or simply admired. » (Alternatives gallery)

Gioielli di carta – Paper Jewelry – Bijoux de PAPIER

Milano : Gioielli di carta - Progetti di 60 designer – EXPO Milan sept-oct 2009

Organised by Alba Cappellieri, professor of jewellery design at the “Politecnico” of Milan and by Bianca Cappello, jewellery historian, Paper Jewellery: poor jewellery is an exhibition that represents the most complete exhibition dedicated to paper jewellery: 60 designers from all over the world – from Australia to Austria, from Italy to Finland, England, Germany, Belgium, Hungary, Poland – in an unmissable journey through distant cultures under the sign of only one protagonist: paper. Folded, embroidered, plaited, sewn, sponged, pleated, punched, recycled, glued, water-painted, paper takes on unimaginable decorations and shapes: rarefied like Nobuko Murakami’s origami, elegant like Daniele Papuli and Janna Syvanoja’s pleats or the Dutch Nel Linssen’s ruffs, blooming like Sandra di Giacinto’s geometries or materic like Ritsuko Ogura’s textures, joyous like Ana Hagopian’s flowers, the collages by Feroci Design or Andrzej Szadkowski’s spectra, conceptual like the Fritz Maierhofer compositions.

Paper jewellery imposes a reflection on preciousness, no longer entrusted, as with traditional jewellery, to metals and gems but rather to the project that represents the main theme of this exhibition. The vulnerability of paper is suitably pliable to design reflections that are usually far from the world of jewellery like sustainability, ecology, territorial valorisation. Free from exchange values codified by the market paper jewellery explores languages and themes covering many disciplines: ornaments, colours, shapes, surfaces, textures, by transferring influences and aesthetics not only from fashion but also from design. And so, with this aim in mind we have included the works of 5 designers, designers that usually have to measure themselves with internal decoration and lighting, who have produced their paper jewellery especially for this exhibition. They are Deep Design, Giulio Iacchetti, Marco Ferreri, Miriam Mirri, Marco Romanelli with Marta Laudani and Paolo Ulian.

CAGNES-sur-MER (FR) – Espace SOLIDOR – Collection permanente – Musée
