« GlAmour with a capital »A« – putting the accent on the essential

Glamour is not something superficial. It is something profound.
That is what this show is about.

Glamour

OPENING 7 november 2014 – 5pm

What do they say about us on the other side of the world?
And what do you know about them?
This exhibition unites the northern and southern hemispheres through the work of jewellery and object artists from Australia & Estonia. In each country statements were collected from ordinary members of the public about their knowledge and opinion of the other country. Each artist chose a statement about their country from someone on the other side of the world. The piece they made is a reaction to this statement.
Words spoken across the globe invite a personal study of our own culture and a reaction to other’s perceptions of who we are. Each piece is a navigation of an outsider’s perspective and the resulting realisations and revelations about our own identity.
The two cultures have been explored through unverified perceptions and understandings. The resulting objects are repositories of both cultural and personal narratives. They examine the global flow of information between two physically and culturally separate countries and provoke an international exploration of self.

EXPO ‘Pensieri Preziosi 9 : Contemporary Australian Jewellery’ – Oratorio di San Rocco, Padova (Italy) – 30 Nov. 2013 – 23 Fevr. 2014

Pensieri Preziosi 9 : Contemporary Australian Jewellery

Oratorio di San Rocco (Padova, Italy) 30-Nov-2013 – 23-Feb-2014

This exhibition allows visitors to get to know, appreciate and examine highly original works created by eight specially chosen artists who have studied at the most important University of Design on the continent of Australia, under the guidance of Prof. Robert Baines”, notes Andrea Colasio, the Municipal Councillor for Culture. Robert Baines is Emeritus Professor at the RMIT University of Melbourne, and together with Nicholas Bastin, Simon Cottrell, Kirsten Haydon, Linda Hughes, Christopher Milbourne, Nicole Polentas and Katherine Wheeler, they have created an exhibition with about one hundred works that will give the Italian public the chance to get to know and appreciate the styles of Australian research goldsmithing.
The works selected for this exhibition use poor materials alongside precious gold, with original and unusual working techniques that combine tradition and innovation: they are conceptually complicated pieces which aim to express each individual artist’s thoughts, feelings and artistic reflection of both the past and the present.
According to Baines, the “poetry of making” needs a tòpos, a real and metaphorical “place” where you can create jewellery. In this search for the tòpos, the artist identifies and indicates four major areas for his students to focus on in order to design and create contemporary jewellery. The tòpos of the “found object”, namely remnants of industrial materials, discarded objects from everyday life, collected and reused by offering them a new dimension and new life; the tòpos of intimate space, personal and private, one’s own body, the home, individual and subjective memories; the tòpos of public space, streets, exteriors and architecture; and the tòpos of history and culture which is inevitably linked to history and personal thoughts.
Australian contemporary jewellery is mainly conceptual, displaying skilful technical experimentation in its use of materials, with a keen focus on personal and collective history, as well as elegant forms with echoes linked to the past but also to modern daily life. At times this produces abstract, fantastical and poetic results which often have a veil of nostalgic irony.
This conceptual process often leads to interpretations that unwind like true stories, real or surreal tales where the works of art are the main characters within a careful and well-thought-out procedure of research and planning.

This year the exhibits accepted for SCHMUCK were selected by Bernhard Schobinger of Richterswil in Switzerland. A trained goldsmith, Schobinger is one of today´s leading jewellery designers. His works are regarded as influential in determining new directions in style and the man himself is seen as an artist with a unique aesthetic sense who has broken new ground particularly in avant-garde jewellery design. Not surprisingly, the works selected by him for SCHMUCK 2013, reflect this background. « They include a number of exciting new artists, but also many familiar names, » reveals Dieter Dohr. The exhibits at SCHMUCK include works by Robert Baines (Australia), David Bielander (Switzerland), Sungho Cho (Korea), Sam Tho Duong (Vietnam), Kimiaki Kageyama and Ryuichiro Nakamura (Japan) and Bruce Metcalf (USA).

SCHMUCK 2013 – Munich (DE) – PROGRAMME – 6-12 Mars 2013

SCHMUCK is an international jewellery competition which is staged every year in March as part of the Internationale Handwerksmesse. For over fifty years SCHMUCK has been the jewellery sector´s premier exhibition. From among the many applications received from designers to exhibit in SCHMUCK, a single juror makes his or her own personal selection of those whose work will be presented. This juror is generally an international curator and expert in contemporary jewellery design. In 2006 the Danner Foundation took over as patron of the exhibition. The organiser is the Handwerkskammer für München und Oberbayern (Chamber of Trades and Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria), and the venue host is the Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH.

Organized by the Verein zur Förderung des Handwerks e.V.
Willy Brandt Allee 1, 81829 München, Germany

* >> Klassiker der Schmuck 2013
Warwick Freeman , New Zeland
Each year at this special exhibition one designer is honoured in a retrospective called « Classic of the Modern ». This time it´s the turn of New Zealand designer Warwick Freeman. His pieces are characterised by a reduced, very clear idiom and a particular reference to natural forms.

EXPO ‘Robert Baines: Frisches Fleisch – Fresh Meat’ – Pieces of Eight Gallery, Melbourne (AU) – 4 Oct.-13 Nov. 2011

Robert Baines: Frisches Fleisch – Fresh Meat

Pieces of Eight Gallery proudly presents an exhibition of new work by Robert Baines, Frisches Fleisch : Fresh Meat. Baines is one of Australia’s most highly regarded and internationally recognised jewellers and goldsmiths. His exhibition at Pieces of Eight Gallery sees Baines create a commentary on what he views to be the endangerment of the original idea and the practice of plagiarism in contemporary jewellery. Utilising the technique of casting, something not typically seen in his work, he furthers his case and punctuates his argument by the frequent inclusion in many of the pieces of the Rothschild Red Giraffe, itself an endangered species.

Robert Baines is Professor of Art and Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT School of Art and postgraduate coordinator of Gold & Silversmithing. He is an internationally respected goldsmith, researcher, academic and author. He is the winner of the most significant awards in his field, namely The Bayerischer Staatspreis 2005 and the Friedrich Becker Preis 2008. His most recent books published are Bracelet’Java-la-Grande’ (Palgrave Macmillan 2006) and More Amazing Schmuck Stories by Robert Baines (Australia Scholarly Publishing 2009).
