Vanity is a theme as old as the existence of Art itself. “Remember you will die” whispered the slave to the Roman General during the triumphs. Nowadays, this superstition which became obsession cannot be hidden. Her rebirth in the Contemporary Art is such that Vanity has become true fashion or a lifestyle. “Vanitas vanitatum, omnia vanitas”. How better than the current age of technology and overconsumption to update this adage? In this month of the dead, Omnia Vanitas proposes a stop in space-time, a time for reflexion to ask themselves the right questions once again.
On this occasion, the WCC-BF and the Koma Gallery exposed 62 artists from Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, France, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Finland and Estonia. In their own way, each of them present their personal interpretation of death and Vanity. As in the exhibition of the European Price for Applied Arts, the artworks will be seen with all the contemplation and the reflexion it requires. In its own way, Omnia will propose to visitors a more intimate perspective on our relationship with life and death.

An exhibition that features the work of Alchemists, teachers and students, former and current, to render visible how skill and creativity pass from one generation to the next, from master to apprentice, giving shape to concept and material

Alchimia: an Anthology features work of current and former faculty of the world-renowned jewelry program at the Alchimia School in Florence, Italy, complemented by a juried selection of pieces by alumni and final semester students. The exhibition highlights technical skill and creativity, and shows a breadth materials and processes realized to form masterful pieces. The exhibition gives visitors an opportunity to support student work and see the way faculty inspires new generations of makers.

The exhibition coincides with the annual Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) conference, which will be held in Boston during May 20-23, 2015.

The SCHMUCK is an international exhibition that has been taking place in Munich for more than 50 years. It combines works of established artists and promising newcomers in the area of contemporary jewellery design and is the meeting place for collectors, jewellery lovers and museum curators from Germany and abroad. Organized as a worldwide contest, the works are chosen by an internationally renowned curator each year, this time by Eva Eisler, professor at the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (AAAD). “Presenting works at the SCHMUCK is an honor for any jewellery designer“, says Dieter Dohr, Management Board Chairman of the GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH. That is also why this time, more than 600 gold smiths and jewellery designers from Germany and abroad applied for the special show. In spring 2015, contributions by 63 artists from 21 countries will finally be on display. This time, Karel Novak from the Czech Republic will be honored as the classic of modern art. Highlight of the SCHMUCK will be the awarding of the Herbert-Hofmann-prizes on Saturday, 14 March 2015 at 5 pm on stage in hall B1. On this day, a jury will select the three best works of the SCHMUCK. Each year, a number of accompanying events group around the special show at the Internationale Handwerksmesse in Munich galleries, museums and cultural institutes.

The Museum shows to the public a Collection presentation, on view in gallery 0.25. This collection presentation focuses on the human body. The selection comprises jewelry that literally measure the human body, and pieces whose shape is based on the human body—on sexual characteristics, to be precise.

This collection presentation focuses on the human body. The selection comprises jewelry that literally measure the human body, and pieces whose shape is based on the human body—on sexual characteristics, to be precise. The designs that comment on the notion of “human measurements”, for instance “the ideal woman”, are highly conceptual. Some designs, such as those that compel the body to assume a new shape, are also ambivalent. But what kind of message is jewelry in the form of penises, breasts, nipples or testicles trying to convey? Irony? An invitation? Are the pieces intended to excite or shock? Each culture has its own forms of body adornment, often worn to communicate status (wealth or group affiliation) or sexual availability.
In the late ’60s, young European jewelry designers began to reject the function of jewelry as status symbol (the pearl necklace, for instance). Their alternatives, which took the form of unorthodox shapes and materials, were a visual protest against the established order, parallel to the sexual revolution of the day. In the decades that followed, jewelry designers continued to explore similar themes, particularly jewelry’s relationship to the body, youth culture, and eroticism and sexuality. These trends are also visible in the Stedelijk collection.

This special exhibition is the eldest exhibition of contemporary jewellery work in the world. It takes place since 1959 every year during the International Trade Fair in March. Except the transport cost until Munich the participation in the special show is free of charge for you. Three contributions of Schmuck 2013 will be awarded with the Herbert Hofmann Prize. The prize commemorates Dr. Herbert Hofmann, the founder of the special show in 1959. In addition the jury of the Bavarian States Prize will look at the works in the special show. The Bavarian States Prize is awarded to 10 contri-bution of applied art within all contribution of the International Trade Fair. This prize is awarded with 5.000€.

More than 552 goldsmiths from 43 countries around the globe applied to participate in the special “Schmuck” (Jewellery) show at the International Crafts Fair in Munich next year. This great interest once again confirms the importance of this event in the context of contemporary jewellery-making and the significance attached to it worldwide. An above-average number of applications were received this year from Australia, Japan and Taiwan, but also from New Zealand and Argentina, the latter having been among the applicants for only a few years now. The selection for 2014 was made especially interesting thanks to the many new exhibitors nominated by the curator Jorunn Veiteberg of Copenhagen. Unusually, “Jewellery 2014” features over 25 new exhibitors, who will be represented in this renowned exhibition for the first time.

For the year 2014, a total of 66 participants from 25 nations were invited to exhibit. Numerically most strongly represented are goldsmiths from Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Denmark and Sweden. The applicants grow younger by the year, an indicator that even before or immediately after finishing their training goldsmiths seek to compete in our special show, present their work to an interested public, experts, gallery owners and museum curators, and rapidly find their way into the jewellery avant-garde. “Jewellery” is an important venue for making a name for oneself in international goldsmiths’ circles, establishing contacts, and not least, witnessing the award of the prestigious Herbert Hofmann Prize on Saturday.

The special “Jewellery” show is characterized by the choice of certain themes which, in the eyes of curator Jorunn Veiteberg, represent salient traits of current jewellery design. As signs of our times and selection criteria, she sees found objects of metal or wood, things that bear definite marks of use, materials that speak an expressive, earthy language, forms and structures reminiscent of architecture, as well as masks, a tendency to mysticism, and forceful color schemes.

Honored as next year’s Modern Classic will be Dorothea Prühl, a goldsmith who lives in Halle. A teacher at Burg Giebichenstein Art College, she not only helped shape an entire generation of young goldsmiths but, over and above her teaching activity, has created an admirable, original oeuvre that holds a very special place within contemporary jewellery design.

Curator of “Jewellery 2014” is Jorunn Veiteberg, a Norwegian art historian who lives in Copenhagen. An arts journalist and exhibition curator, Veiteberg has taught since 2002 at the National Academy in Bergen, Norway. Since 2013 she has been guest professor at the University of Göteborg, Sweden, and chairwoman of the Norwegian Crafts Association. She has published in the fields of contemporary jewellery and ceramics. Veiteberg says it was a great honor for her to make the selection for “Jewellery 2014.” She was especially impressed by the quality of the submissions and their international range. For her as a Scandinavian, it was an enriching experience to see so many submissions from South Korea, Japan, Argentina, the U.S., and many other countries from around the world.

The Handwerkskammer organizes the special shows Exempla, Talente, Modern Masters and Schmuck at the International Handwerksmesse München with the Herbert-Hofmann-Award 2014 ceremony on Saturday 15th March at 4 p.m. We will show in our Galerie Handwerk the exhibition WUNDERRUMA – Jewellery from New Zealand.

‘QI’ – RUUDT PETERS PREVIEW : 

« Chinese alchemy is based on the life force Qi, the interaction between body and spirit, the continuation of life. The artist Ruudt Peters wanted to get an understanding of this legacy and left Holland for a journey through China that was to last three months. 

During his travels he visited the terracotta army of emperor Jing Di, comparable with the better known army of China’s first emperor, only with figures half as tall and more damaged by the ravages of time. He was struck by what he saw: the futile efforts to display power and shield a dead ruler. This was the opposite of what had brought Peters to this part of the world. So during his stay at the Chinese European Art Centre in Xiamen, he decided to create a his own army, made from porcelain and based on the Chinese Alchemistic tradition. His starting point was the idealized Chinese acupuncture-man, but he modified him into a model defined by a western lifestyle and the passing of time. Before the figures went into the furnace, he individualized each one by altering surfaces and adding or removing segments and details. Later on in Amsterdam, he attached al sorts of elements made of silver, iron, glass, or horse hair. Peters three months sojourn in China is now symbolized by 99 china men. An army celebrating life. 
Each day during his trip Peters made a blind drawing: a pillow on his lap, drawing pad on top, sketching with eyes closed. They became the logbook of his experiences, of his mental and physical reactions. Gradually human faces started to emerge in the drawings.
Who’s features became visible? Was it someone from the East or the West, or perhaps the alter ego of the artist? Eventually these portraits provided the starting point for a collection of jewellery pieces. Fragments from Peters’ drawings were laser-cut in Xiamen from semi-translucent slices of agate. He assembled them into brooches and necklaces and applied silver lines on both front- and backsides. In doing so, he merged European and Chinese conventions, seeking an interaction between deliberately, and subconsciously made sketches. EXPO ‘Lahti Jewellry’ – Galerie Pont & Plas, Gent (Belgium) – 2 Juin–5 Oct. 2013

Lahti Jewellry at Galerie Pont & Plas, Gent, Belgium -    Finnish and international jewellery designers will present their visual view of Lahti (town in a bay of Finland, traditionally considered as a melting-point for different cultures), with each one using Lahti as the theme for designing and producing a piece of jewellery.  Curated by Helena Lehtinen and Anna Rikkinen, and with a lovely catalogue!
