THE RING – the most common piece of jewellery can be full of meaning, a personal statement sometimes showing itself as a technical miracle or purely decorative and beautiful. It can demand attention, be an invitation to play, be filled with tears and secrets – and is to be worn for one day or for ever.
In homage to the ring Galleri Hnoss has invited all the jewellery artists exhibited in the gallery since the start in 1997 to produce one ring each. The result is now to be seen in the exhibition THE RING – jewel forever. The show consisting of over one hundred rings is a vibrant collection of different expressions, thoughts and forms

Workshop : Helena Lehtinen: Cameo
Cameo is a traditional piece of jewellery which has its origins in seals.
During history it has been in and out of fashion in courts in Europe. Nowdays it is usually a red-white silhuet of a lady, most often worn by eldery ladies.
Reflecting to what this classical piece of jewellery has been in the past, students will search cameo´s meaning today.
What it has been, what it could be? Is there any significancy left, what it could present in today´s society / to today´s people?
 What is your cameo?
With new materials and way of working students will create new traditions in cameos.
Working with stone is possible in the workshop.
Lead by jewellery artist Helena Lehtinen,
 assistant Tarja Tuupanen

Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

Wendy Ramshaw und David Watkins © Artists

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

min-association is a group of three jewellery makers that decided to join their strength and motivate each other within the field of artistic jewellery. The three studied together at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and graduated between 2007 and 2008. They enjoy to stay connected despite the fact that they don’t always live in the same country. With this exhibition they will show their joy of communication.

“xxx Jewels”
The first thing you see when you arrive in Amsterdam Schiphol is a huge poster with a woman showing her bare breast.
‘Sex Sells’ is an overused concept.
Students of the Jewelry Department Het Sieraad of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie use this principle to show their work. They made collages combining pornography with their jewelry pieces. The explicit character of the pornography is transformed into a new image; a dialogue between body and jewel.
“xxx Jewels”, is a jewelry presentation in form of posters and a magazine.
The posters will be spread around the city during the time of the festival. The magazine is for sale and will be shown at the different locations of the B-side Festival; it also will be presented at the opening of the jewelry fair Sieraad, the 4th. of November between 2am and 9pm.

‘The Plastic Show’, an exhibition featuring work from the recently published Lark Jewelry Book 500 Plastic Jewelry Designs. The Plastic Show features 250 pieces by 75 artists employing a variety of plastic materials such as resin, latex, rubber, epoxy, and thermoplastics, many of which are reused or recycled. Having been embraced by artists and designers, these materials are now firmly woven into the language of contemporary jewelry making. Used alone or in combination with traditional elements, these substances can, with certainty, be classified as precious. Thanks to the use of plastics, conventional components like silver, gold, platinum, and gemstones are now only part of the jewelry-making equation. The jewelry in this collection represents the best work being produced today by artists who use plastics as a foundational element in their pieces.

ça me réjouit et me met en joie ! :-)

Unusual SHOP : « In Stock » – goes to ASIA during Taiwan Designers’ Week 2010 – 3-12 Sept 2010

‘In Stock’ the jewellery pop-up store in a hardware shop coat is a blessed concept initiated by the three Dutch designers Ineke Heerkens, Jantje Fleischhut, Jeannette Jansen since 2009. This project of an unconventional display of contemporary jewellery design shows work, which lingers on the edge of design and art. Around seventy renowned international designers produce for this concept multiples in an edition of five – still mostly handmade.

In Stock pops up Taiwan 2010

For the display, blister packaging on perforated wooden walls is used, price labels, cash register, a supermarket trolley at the entrance.

EXPO ‘LINGAM’ – Galerie du WCC-BF, Mons (Belgique) – 8 mai-22 aout 2010

http://www.artcritics.be/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Udi-Lagallina1-300x200.jpg
Udi Lagallina - Lingam et son yoni. Wood, gold, pearls, textile.

EXPO ‘Materia e colore’ – Studio GR20, Padova (Italie) – 16 avril-15 mai 2010

Gioielleria Contemporanea – Materia e colore / Material and Colour
Omaggio a Sandra Marconato
……. quando la sostanza incide sulla forma e diventa arte

EXPO GR-20 - 16avril-16mai 2010_ Padova

Artists: Karl Fritsch, Bussi Buhs, Beppe Kessler, Annamaria Zanella, Barbara Paganin, Stefano Marchetti, Iris Eichenberg, Ruudt Peters, Lam de Wolf, Robert Smit, Isabella Facco, Silvia Walz, Lisa Walker, Fritz Maierhofer, Fabrizio Tridenti, Sandra Marconato.

« The exhibition focuses on a phenomenon which, originating from artistic experimentation in the 1990s, has gradually outlined itself more clearly in the first decade of this century. Organic, mineral and artificial matter now has a central role : it bears creative stimuli associated with the analysis of its own specificity, which gives rise to fantastic, symbolistic and naturalistic formulations. All materials may be subjected to examination, which inspires free, unregulated schemes devoid of preconstituted ideas. Artists like Karl Fritsch, Bussi Buhs, Beppe Kessler, Annamaria Zanella, Barbara Paganin and Stefano Marchetti in his recent works elaborate images that are profoundly affected by transformations and pulsations of matter which their own rules and energy set into motion. Other artists, such as Iris Eichenberg, Ruudt Peters, Lam de Wolf and Robert Smit choose very different materials: they combine metals with wood, paint, fabric, glass and minerals – the latter in their morphological entirety – and join them with conceptual and symbolic associations related to individualistic representations and esoteric, mythological and historical expressions. Still others convey their messages through objects – sometimes selected as true objets trouvés – the assemblage of which becomes installation-jewellery: such are the works by Isabella Facco, Silvia Walz and Lisa Walker. Lastly, there are artists who have skilfully associated their experience with images defined both by geometric elaborations and by mechanical constructions, like Fritz Maierhofer and Fabrizio Tridenti. Recalling the great Minimalist and Constructivist movements, they carry out experiments with materials that give them freedom of expression: Maierhofer uses Corian, a plastic substance, and Tridenti upsets perfect mechanisms by introducing rust, paints and pigments that jeopardise their functional structures. The exhibition also displays Bussi Buhs’s sculptures and one of Barbara Paganin’s installations.
With this exhibition, Studio GR.20 aims at emphasising the importance of substance over form, and in this context pays homage to Sandra Marconato. The artist uses evanescent materials like gauze, paper, tempera and acrylics to create sculptures and installations that the Paduan public already admired at exhibitions in the Palazzo della Ragione (16th Biennale del Bronzetto e Piccola Scultura, Padua, 1995) and at the Museum of Palazzo del Monte (anthological exhibition, 1996).

« For a considerable time now I have been exploring the feminine subconscious in the male (the ANIMA) as a guiding principle for my design. Over the past year I have been drawing blind, in order to achieve  more freedom in my thinking. These drawings give expression to an unknown terrain in my visual language. I can not direct them. My principle in them is, the less you control the design, the more freedom and room in the ultimate product. As a continuation of this technique, I have also been drawing with wax underwater. This action generates an unfamiliar language. It is movement that solidifies what arises from the unconscious. A fluid line is caught in coagulated form. This process produces a totally different sort of design with regard to freedom, thought and expression. The works are gracile, delicate and fragile.  » (Ruudt Peters)
