Léa Mazy (FR) - Beneath the surface - 2016 Léa Mazy -  Beneath the surface -  2016 – Léa is a young French designer studying at Design Academy Eindhoven.  Léa ’s jewelry collection “Beneath the Surface” is the result of a research on materials around the notions of intimacy, preciousness, fragility, surprise, but most of all on the beauty lying underneath the surface. Combined, the individual story of each broches and rings creates a personal narration and landscape.

Mari Funaki was a unique and passionate advocate for contemporary jewellery in Australia, both through her own remarkable practice and her establishment and directorship of Gallery Funaki.
This Award aims to celebrate Mari’s legacy by rewarding the skills and vision of jewellers both here and overseas and by providing a platform for outstanding new work to be shown here in Australia. A panel of three judges will award prizes in both established and emerging categories, with total prize money valued at AUD$11,000.

EXPO ‘Side by Side’ – ECNP Gallery, Istanbul (Turkey) – 3-26 Mars 2016

Side by Side by Burcu Büyükünal and Selen Özus

Side by Side is an amalgam of two solo but parallel shows by Burcu and Selen, who have been sharing a mutual dream since 2007 and finally Maden Contemporary Jewellery Studio since 2011. Side by Side, the result of a long working process, emerges as a response to the passion and the need to create. In that regard, it is the fruit of not only a spatial cooperation but is also a meeting of the hearts. After Hasbelkader, the first show Burcu and Selen put on “together” in 2012, this second exhibition.

Side by Side

Let It…,  Burcu Büyükünal
Let it exist, let it cease, let it come, let it go, let it stay, let it appear, let it conceal, let it decay, let it split, let them gather, let it unite, let it be remembered, let it be forgotten, let it out, let it in, let it get lost, let it be found, let it become ugly, let it turn beautiful…
Let it… is a work that began to appear in my mind when I lost myself in the details of Abel Mort sculpture by Emile Feugère des Fort in Musée d’Orsay. It emerges from these details and changes its direction under the influence of the natural and obligatory course of life. It is fiction but it is real.
 Biography:
Having graduated from Industrial Design Department of Istanbul Technical University in 2003, Burcu Büyükünal started to work at Ela Cindoruk and Nazan Pak’s jewellery studio. After receiving Fulbright Award she got her MFA in Metal at SUNY at New Paltz in 2009. She confounded Maden Contemporary Jewelry Studio in 2011 with Selen Özus. Currently, she teaches classes at Maden, İTÜ and Plato Higher College of Education.
  Artist Statement:
« Among my works, there are designed products along with functional and nonfunctional, artistic and arbitrary pieces that I cannot classify. Contemporary jewellery, which is my main field, comes and goes between these two related disciplines, stands closer to one of them time to time. I sometimes focus on a technique, a material or a visual data around me and create links among them while revealing my own point of view. I crave to ask uncommon questions and find alternative answers to them. Even though I enjoy sticking to my habits in the process of creation, I find theme shifts nourishing and exciting. I believe creating and making is a childlike addiction. That’s why my studio is my living room. »

The Closest, Selen Özus
My autoportrait works entitled “The closest” are the products of an interpretive process of visualizing myself which resulted in conflicts and clashes. The period started with shut-eye drawings: My white on white faces only to reveal themselves with a closer look, are chosen to define myself. Porcelaine works emerged as the variable reflections of transparent and delicate materials gone with the flow.
 Selen Özus Biography:
Selen Özus was born in 1983 in Istanbul, where she continues to live and work. She got her BFA in Ceramic and Glass Design in Mimar Sinan Fine Art University, followed by a three year Jewellery Program in Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School in Florence where she took classes from Peter Bauhuis, Manfred Bischoff and Ruudt Peters.  Her work has been exhibited locally and internationally. She teaches at the Maden Contemporary Jewellery Studio, she co-founded with Burcu Büyükünal.
  Artist Statement:
« It all starts with the valuable beauties and ugliness’ that surround us: People, being human, lights, spaces, relations, memories, nature and details. The sensations created by everybody and everything awaken a desire to produce. In fact, all shapens up while paying gently attention to the details. From then on my sole aim is to retreat to my secured world and to concretize what I see with my feelings… to reflect the combination of brain and heart. While producing, drawings become objects, objects become art jewellery. Once my strong feelings balanced, the rest passes to the piece. »

A TRIBUTE TO MANFRED BISCHOFF   – 43 Students Pay Homage
43 of his former students from 22 countries who will each show a piece at the exhibition, dedicated to Manfred’s golden “Fingerpuppets” by creating their own little version of Manfred, the real golden boy.

#20
Opening 24.02.2016 18:00

« About the exhibition :  A former student, Isabel Dammermann, took it upon herself to make a special event for the teacher Manfred Bischoff who inspired so many. At the same time, she has managed to create a very interesting exhibition that is on display during the Munich Jewellery week 2016. »

Jewellery artists from 22 countries all over the world come together in a memorial exhibition for Manfred Bischoff who passed away a year ago. At some point or other, they have all been taught by Manfred at Alchimia, contemporary jewellery school in Florence, and have each submitted one piece to the exhibition that honours a great teacher.
German born Manfred Bischoff lived in Tuscany in a house that was in itself a piece of exquisite art. Its magical interior made a natural and perfect framework for his work that has been called by many names: sensual, poetic, lyrical, great, intimate, strong, beautiful, satirical and always surprising. He worked in 22K gold, as pure as he could manage and still maintain a rigidity in the metal that allowed him to execute his ideas in delicate and well crafted pieces, often accompanied with subtle pink coral and drawings.
His dedication to the language of jewellery and his visions were most likely one of the reasons that the Alchimia school managed to become known and respected internationally in a relatively short time span.

The teacher
« As a student at Alchimia, you never really met Manfred until the third year. He was a giant figure who arrived to the narrow street in Florence on Tuesdays. He spent time with the older students, watched the world from behind his sunglasses when he leaned onto the wall at coffee breaks, and then he vanished again.
It was not until you were there yourself – in your final year – that you met the myth and began to appreciate his capacity to engage in your work and to show you how you might develop it. He was a surprisingly selfless teacher, and during critiques in the small classroom he managed to create a space for you and him to engage in a dialogue about your work that was stripped of second agendas and based solely on how he could help you to become a better artist.
It is only later, you come to understand how exceptionally truthful and helpful he tried to be in order to make you grow as a person and as an artist. »

COUP de COEUR : Selen OZUS errors & more

Classé dans : ALCHIMIA (IT),ceramique,COUP DE COEUR,Selen OZUS (TR),Turquie (TR) — bijoucontemporain @ 22:22

Selen Özus jewelry …. a serie of « errors », a serie of little characters -between irony & tenderness- between drawing & jewel, that make you -me- smile, that touch your heart …..

Selen Özus was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1983. She got her BFA in Ceramic and Glass Design in Mimar Sinan Fine Art University, and completed a three year Jewellery Program in Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School, Florence, Italy. She took classes from Peter Bauhuis, Manfred Bischoff and Ruudt Peters during her education in Alchimia. Selen Özus, attended various exhibitions in Europe and Istanbul, is living in Istanbul now and working as an instructor at Maden Contemporary Jewellery Studio which is founded by herself with her colleague Burcu Büyükünal.
Selen Ozus Jewelry | ILLUSTRATIONS
« I am gliding on an emotional air and trying to understand my feelings such as anger, love, and sorrow. I am also inspired by human body and the conditions it is involved like simple daily life and intricate relationships to other people.
My works are my memories. They are little sculptures that carry poetic and ironic stories. I share my memories with people when my pieces are worn. Then every piece starts having new memories. This is why I make jewelry.
I usually convey my expreriences through my illustrations first. It works like a therapy for me. I develop my jewelry by carrying my illustrations to the materials I like, especially silver, iron, and porcelain. I use silver like a canvas, pure and white, I fire and texture it to express a drawing quality. I also enjoy joining the darkness and heaviness of the iron with the fragile but robust nature of porcelain.
When I am working I dive into a wonderful world full of surprises. I feel safe in the loneliness of my creative process and express my feelings as outloud as possible.«
