Once more SODA brings together a group of contemporary artists who use different colours, materials and themes to exhibit their work for the SODAmore exhibition this summer.

“SODAmore Summer 2011: Contemporary Art Jewellery Exhibition,” which was also organized last year, will host many new international artists. This show will challenge you to forget the old contours and styles you were once used to, to be swiftly replaced by deserving contemporary art.

Including approximately 70 pieces, the exhibition will present prominent artists of Contemporary Art Jewellery which has become an acclaimed area of interest for international art collectors who use various materials like glass, metal, rubber, plexiglass, wood, paper, plastic and ceramic.

The exhibition hosts artists Zwetelina Alexieva, Ara Kuo, Ritsuko Ogura, Selen Özus, Lina Peterson, Nikolay Sardamov, Michihiro Sato, Salima Thakker, Flora Vagi and Tanel Veenre. Some rings are made from hairbrushes while some bracelets are carved out of cardboard; ultimately the exhibit will surprise you and make you question the definition of “precious” jewellery.

EXPO ‘ARTornamento 2010′ – Alternatives Gallery, Rome (Italy) – 23 Sept.-15 Oct. 2010

EXPO 'ARTornamento 2010' - Alternatives Gallery, Rome (Italy) - 23 Sept.-15 Oct. 2010 dans ALCHIMIA (IT) 50552_144475605588042_1814_n

« The sixth edition of the exhibition ArtOrnamento will present 10 ex-students from the school Alchimia in Florence, one of the best contemporary jewellery schools on an international level. Alchimia represents excellence in innovation in the sector, but is at the same time a place for the conservation and study of ancient goldsmith techniques.
The 10 participants in this year’s exhibition have gained their formation experience through the qualified supervision of the most renowned artists worldwide.
The selected pieces will investigate the close relationship between body and object, by means of a new interpretation of the concept of personal adornment.
The exhibition aims to create a contact between the public and the makers, so as to investigate the result of their research. This is a first important appointment that intends to offer a view on the new frontiers that contemporary jewellery creation is facing.
This year Alternatives has initiated a competition that involves the acquisition of a piece of jewellery that will go to form a new permanent collection dedicated to research jewellery. «

« To this artist, jewellery is a journey through material and form. It tells a story of its own, while following curiosity. The pieces are unique in their forms and combine fragments of the past with elements of the present.«

« This artist has an evident disposition to make pieces that grow into multiplying elements. She inherited this from her home culture, a country where the need for company and fraternity influences ones outlook on many aspects of life. The search for balance and tranquility is a constant. A quest to evoke timelessness.«

« In the pieces entitled ‘Cover and Discover’, this artist uses contradiction as expression in her works. Showing an element or covering it up, using the materials to express this and transforming them into works of art. »

Sayaka Ito (JP) (Alchimia 2008-2010)

« This artist is curious about what is inside things that we see. Visually, only the outside of objects can been seen, but often there is more than what the eye can visually see. This brings her to imagine what lies beyond. Similarly, this concept can also be applied to people. Our actions are supported by our body, but come from within. «

ALCHIMIA – School of contemporary jewellery -

Alchimia, school of contemporary jewellery in Firenze, is based in the Oltrarno part of Florence, a district of fine artisans’ workshops since Medieval times. This setting is important for a school that has among its goals to connect learning and knowledge about traditional goldsmiths’ techniques with research and experimenting on both subjects and the conceptual substrate of the creative process.
Alchimia has established itself as a major point of reference for contemporary jewellery-making both in Italy and in Europe. The importance of generating the right atmosphere between teachers and students has produced results of a very high quality, with peaks of excellence made evident by many international prized acknowledgements.

l’Expo est passée, mais j’aime cette idée (étant moi-même profondément méditerranéenne…) de la Méditerranée comme lien entre des créateurs et des créations …..

« The main topic of the event is the Mediterranean as the “sea between lands, border and connection sea between these lands”.
The Mediterranean is the line where north-west and south-east of the world meet and a crucial area for the future of humankind.
This point of contact may become, as the writer Samuel Huntington says, “the starting point for dialogue between civilisations”, where common features are mixed with differences and the respect for “diversity” is based on understanding and knowing other people’s nature.
Each community should learn from the others and teach to them: it is possible to break the “game” aiming at creating monolithic cultures only through these connections.
This was probably not understood in the past, but now a defined direction should be outlined and followed to achieve this objective.
Therefore, the “voice” of the Mediterranean is not coming from the past, but from the future, according to that balance between land and sea, belonging and freedom, where a living model does not demonize our need for establishing links or our need for freedom.
If it is true that hope is in the future, then assigning this message to an extremely contemporary and innovative art expression can help us achieving this objective.
This is the reason why Contemporary Jewellery was selected, as this is a sector of advanced research and experimentation halfway between design and tradition, as an expressive language to disseminate this message.

Through Contemporary Jewellery research, it is possible to highlight and give value to the cultural diversities characterising all communities living around the shores of this Sea.
This project has several purposes: promote the cultural heritage that has always characterised the Municipality of Nocciano, i.e. its Medieval Castle and Picture Gallery beyond the regional and national borders.
At the same time, this event includes the possibility to create a tourist-cultural movement between the Mediterranean Village and Nocciano, which are a few km far from each other.  »

« My work is inspired by old-fashioned activities such as sewing and embroidering. I admire how children transform ordinary materials into valuable assets and try to pay tribute to their game. I use natural materials – silk, wool, cotton, semiprecious stones. I produce small quantities because I work on my own. Every piece is unique and tells a story: of a couple meeting, a flower garland, and happy home. I search for vintage materials – buttons, textiles, stones. I want my jewellery to be funny but also detail orientated. I often use old garments, buttons and stones just to show that every material can carry a memory and still have a second life. » (Loukia Richards) (on CraftsCouncil page)
