ALLA 

Is it possible to question prejudice and xenophobia with jewellery?
29 pieces of jewellery made by the same amount of artists. The brooches are produced especially for the exhibition and addresses issues of identity, xenophobia and views on Swedishness. Besides brooches the exhibition also include photographs, a catalogue and film.
ALLA, which will be unveiled at the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, is initiated and curated by jewellery artist Hanna Hedman and Rut-Malin Barklund.

Jewellery has always been a way to show cultural identity, belonging, status or views. ALLA is a project where 30 jewellery artists living in Sweden have created unique brooches as a reaction to the theme of xenophobia.
These brooches will be taken on a journey from northern to southern Sweden between the 25-27th of October.

The Sterling Gallery cordially invites you to an exclusive exhibition, entitled BROOCH, of young contemporary artists.

Sterling Gallery located in Budapest (H) organizing an exclusive exhibition, entitled BROOCH in order to create an interactive information exchange, a dialogue, a conversation or a meeting between Hungarian and international artists from different countries.

The jewel as a « household object » has pronounced functional complexity.
It has both a role and a tradition in each community.
It can be inferred from certain eras, cultures, ethnic groups and lifestyles, habits and thinking.
It might be a sign, or a symbol which is answering to a non-asked question.
It can refer to the wearer’s age, identity, the religious affiliation, marital status.
It is the distinguishing sign of the everyday and the holidays, a status symbol.
It is a part of magical and practical function in people’s lives.
A jewel fits the body and it’s present in clothing.
The jewel expresses the relationship between people.
The brooch, brooches have also been made in the Bronze Age, Greek, Roman and in other European workshops.

These had a functional role as indispensable elements of clothing and self representation.
The brooches had the force to join, screw and fix the fabric of the cloth.
The use of the buttons and buckles took the practical role of the brooch away, but in the same time the aesthetic function of the brooch has been enhanced.

« The past year has been mostly black.
The oil disaster stained beaches black. The ash cloud put much of Europe in a greyish mist. Miners searching for treasures in the earth, were trapped in the dark. Forest fires as well as street fires worldwide blackened both environments and hearts. Financial crises have made deep dark holes in many wallets.
How deeply does it blacken our souls? In concert with these grave situations, humanity seems to revel in glamour. Politics becomes glamorous, as well as TV programs. Western fashion highlights a desire for power and status. What sparkles, sparkles more and more and the brilliance dazzles and relives.
In the gap between sorrow and escapism, people are looking for spirituality. In contrast to gloominess we flee from reality and seek meaning. The individual is in focus and the ways to find well-being are many.
Blackened Brilliance is the title of an exhibition about some of the past year’s incidents, illustrated using the qualities of jewellery art. Jewellery belongs to humans. We wear jewellery to remember, to make statements orto use as tools in realizing ourselves. Jewellery is intimate in the way that we wear it close to our hearts and fill it with meaning. It is also intimate because it requires the viewer to come close to the objects and to penetrate their meaning to get the entire content. This requires not only courage but also a willingness to understand both as a viewer and as a wearer.«

 ‘The Plastic Show’, an exhibition featuring work from the recently published Lark Jewelry Book 500 Plastic Jewelry Designs. The Plastic Show features 250 pieces by 75 artists employing a variety of plastic materials such as resin, latex, rubber, epoxy, and thermoplastics, many of which are reused or recycled. Having been embraced by artists and designers, these materials are now firmly woven into the language of contemporary jewelry making. Used alone or in combination with traditional elements, these substances can, with certainty, be classified as precious. Thanks to the use of plastics, conventional components like silver, gold, platinum, and gemstones are now only part of the jewelry-making equation. The jewelry in this collection represents the best work being produced today by artists who use plastics as a foundational element in their pieces.

En bonne « fille des années 60-70″ je voue un amour inconsidéré au plastique ! Il faut dire aussi qu’un événemant particulier de ma vie a grandement joué en ce sens : petite, vivant à Thessalonique (nord de la Grèce), on y subissait de nombreux tremblements de terre. L’un d’eux a déclenché un gigantesque incendie où ma famille a TOUT perdu. Mon ère a pleuré son Toulouse-Lautrec, moi mon nounours, et ma mère son argenterie qui a entièrement fondu …. MAIS …. les pompiers nous ont remis ce qui a vait été sauvé : la VAISSELLE en PLASTIQUE, rangée dans le placard au-dessus de l’évier, près du réservoir d’eau ……… c’était le premier signe ! ensuite, remeublement oblige, mes parents se sont entièrement remeublés en « design tout plastique » : sièges en ABS de Guy Paulin, tables plastique de Vico Magistretti chez Artemide, et toute « l’invasion » de plastique orange des années 68 (vous visualisez ? la balance terraillon en plastique orange ? le tourne-disque Phillips mallette-portable-ouvrable ? les miroirs à bords arrondis de chez Artemide ?  les tables de nuit de chez Kartell ??? ) ………et voilà ! j’AIME le plastique !! ses infinies possibilités de formes, ses couleurs « décapantes », son humeur joyeuse  ……….. bon, d’accord, il n’est pas écologique DU TOUT et, parait-il, rend stérile ….. mais … ça me réjouit et me met en joie !

 ’It’s a jewel – not a doll’

 » If you want to understand our time, it’s a good idea to consider the human attributes and see what people wear on the body – or what the artists creating the jewellry would like to see there. Jewellery belongs to the human body. Humans wore jewellery before the invention of clothing, we know that even the Neanderthal’s were intelligent enough to use jewellery, and therefore could see the world in symbols. Jewellery refers to human and spiritual topics, often small in size but occupy place in the greater emotional world. If we ask any given person what they would bring if ones home caught fire, we often hear – jewellery.


In the exhibition we will find jewellery that is at the borders and at same time breaking them. Artists move across land borders, challenging conventions about what is wearable, questioning the standard of what is called authentic and useful materials and techniques not usually associated with jewellery. We will find advanced technical solution; materials relating to odd and historical references.
 Among the works we will find materials stretched beyond recognition :  Agnes Larsson’s laboratory with powdered charcoal, which she transforms into glittering slate. Rut-Malin Barklund’s s necklaces, of a stone-like material yet actually composed of black mdf. Helena Lindholm’s jewellery offers salt crystals as glittering expressions. Sofia BjörkmanSara Borgegård creates the architectural jewels in which the body may form a landscape foundation as well as Johanna Persson, who draws against most forms of art, with her large neck collars of textile and glass. In the exhibition we also see work by Jenny Edlund and Annika Pettersson. digitizes previous work and allows 3D printing to transform them into other scales and colors.  »
