EXPO ‘The New Italian Design’ – Academy of Art University, The Cannery, San Francisco (USA) – 22 Juin-11 Aout 2013

« The New Italian Design«   -  Academy of Art University – The Cannery  (San Francisco, CA, United States)  22-Jun-2013 – 11-Aug-2013

Triennale Design Museum presents an upgraded and updated 2013 edition of The New Italian Design exhibition at the Cannery Galleries of Academy of Art University, San Francisco, from 22 June until 11 August 2013: an overview on contemporary Italian design that explains and describes the transition of the movement and its links with economic, political, and technology changes that occurred over the past Century.

Triennale Design Museum, the first museum of Italian design, is directed by Silvana Annicchiarico, and has organized this exhibition to analyze, value and promote the new Italian creativity. As a travelling exhibition, The New Italian Design was presented in Madrid (2007), Istanbul (2010) Beijing and Nantou (2012), Bilbao (2013).

"The New Italian Design" - Academy of Art University - The Cannery (San Francisco, CA, United States) 22-Jun-2013 - 11-Aug-2013 website: www.triennale.org

The New Italian Design in San Francisco is a part of the project Making in Italy – Making in USA: “Artisanship, Technology and Design. Innovating with Beauty,” which will be held from June 11 to June 24 in San Francisco in the framework of “2013 – Year of Italian Culture in the United States.” The initiative was conceived and curated by the Giannino Bassetti Foundation. This project is the result of a collaboration between the Giannino Bassetti Foundation, the Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco: get-togethers, events, and debates between Italian and American craftsmen, makers and intellectuals, cultivators of beauty and experts in the new technologies, joined together to define and create the economy of beauty.
The exhibition presents works from 132 designers with 288 projects. It includes 189 designers for product design, 28 for graphics, 28 for objects linked to the body like jewelry, handbags and accessories, 7 for research, 32 for food design, 4 for interior design.
The scene that emerges is rich and multifaceted; it starts from furniture design and touches upon new forms of communication, from food to web design, from fashion to textile design, from jewel design to graphic and multimedia all the way to interior design and object design.
The exhibited works range from self produced prototypes to large-series products, from works of art to merely industrial artefacts. Many of the involved designers are already well established at an international level and are employed by important companies in the industry. Presented for the first time in 2007, at Triennale di Milano, The New Italian Design is the result of a survey on a national scale focused on the passage from the XX to the XXI century and the substantial change in the role of the profession.
Silvana Annicchiarico says: “Contemporary design is to be found in a decidedly different model from the one that dominated in the age of the ‘Masters’. In those days, design culture aimed to create finished, functional products, whereas today – in what has in a certain sense become a ‘mass profession’ – design generates processes more than products, and appears primarily as a form of self-representation of the designer’s ability to imagine, create and innovate. Today’s new designers are neither the heirs nor the pupils of the various Munaris, Magistrettis and Castiglionis. They are something else. Insisting on thinking of them as ‘little’ masters means to continue forcing them parasitically into twentieth-century paradigms that no longer hold true. It means doing an injustice to them and to their diversity and originality, as well as to the design system as a whole. Finding one’s way around the new, ever-changing world of Italian design, which is made of team effort and horizontal movements more than individual, vertical actions, requires no nostalgia for a golden age that has had its time. What is needed is a new ability to explore and take risks, and possibly even lose one’s way, only to find it again. The New Italian Design exhibition is an attempt to move in this direction”

EXPO ‘The New Italian Design 2.0′ – Alhondiga Bilbao (Spain) – 8 Fevr.-5 Mai 2013

The New Italian Design 2.0

The New Italian Design 2.0 (Bilbao, Spain) 08-Feb-2013 - 05-May-2013

Triennale Design Museum presents The New Italian Design 2.0 exhibition, which will be hosted by Alhóndiga Bilbao, between 8 February and 5 May 2013: an overview on contemporary Italian design that explains and describes the transition of the movement and its links with economic, political, technology changes that occurred over the century.

Triennale Design Museum, the first museum devoted to the Italian design movement, is directed by Silvana Annicchiarico, and has organized this exhibition to analyze, value and promote the new Italian creativity.
The exhibition presents the results of the survey New Italian Design carried out by the Triennale di Milano in April 2006 and updated to the first decade of the new Century. The survey was aimed at designers acting as designers, art-directors, consultants, service, communication and promotion organizers for the environment and for processes.
It was open to anyone of Italian nationality who was actively involved in research, experimentation, concept creation. Intended to be a sign of recognition, a census, and a representation of young Italian designers on a national scale, it was based on the idea that the passage from the XX to the XXI century was not characterized by new stylistic tendencies in the design field, but rather a substantial change in the role of the profession. Roughly 600 designers entered the data bank, 140 of which were invited. The others presented themselves as candidates. The selection committee was headed by Andrea Branzi and Silvana Annicchiarico, with Alba Cappellieri, Arturo Dell’Acqua Bellavitis, Carmelo Di Bartolo, Anna Gili, Cristina Morozzi, Stefano Maffei, Mario Piazza.

The exhibition is comprised of 282 projects, 165 of which deal with product design issues, 30 are graphics, 54 are focussed on the body and decorative objects such as jewels, bags and accessories, 14 are pure research projects, 14 are on food design while 5 are on interior design.

Thanks to the analysis of both the survey and the exhibition, the state of the art of design has become visible. It is a phenomenon with its own characteristics, independent of the great tradition of the Masters of Italian design.

The Beauty Chase – Parcours esthétiques du bijou contemporain

The Beauty Chase – Parcours esthétiques du bijou contemporain.

This year the poster will feature a ring by Serin Oh from Korea, one of the winners of the biennial international design contest New Traditional Jewellery 2010: True Colours. After the great success of last year another delegation of Korean contemporary jewellery designers will be present at the fair this year – definitely something to look forward to because in our Western eyes these artists give a unique interpretation of their cultural history.

For the 2012 design contest and exhibition the professional jury of New Traditional Jewellery (NTJ) has chosen the theme ‘NEW NOMADS’, because both literally and figuratively this theme offers many possibilities for inspiration.

NEW TRADITIONAL JEWELLERY, international jewellery design contest - JURY (gauche)NEW TRADITIONAL JEWELLERY, international jewellery design contest - JURY for 'new Nomads' droite

the professional jury of New Traditional Jewellery (NTJ) at (hard !) work ….

The history of jewellery is as old as mankind. While people went in search of parts with the best living conditions they carried their valuables with them, wearing them on their bodies. Jewellery that represents economic and social status, as it still does nowadays in the case of nomadic tribes. The dissemination of religions went hand in hand with an unprecedented range of religious jewellery and ornaments, ranging from small containers for religious texts to reliquaries and portable altars.
To this day, jewellery made of stable materials like gold and gems is the guarantee for your ‘ticket home’ in times of crises or when you have to flee from high-risk areas. Due to the global financial crisis prices of this so-called ‘flight gold’ have skyrocketed. Is there an alternative? Nowadays there are quite different streams of migrants but the principle is the same: people in search of parts with better living conditions. The whole world is on the move, from refugees to tourists, from emigrants to employees of multinationals. And you don’t even have to get up from your chair: Skype e.g. has made videoconferencing into a social medium.
NTJ asks contemporary professional jewellery designers to build bridges between the traditional jewellery of e.g. nomads, pilgrims, explorers, globetrotters, refugees or colonists and possible symbols bearers representing the mobility of the ‘NEW NOMADS’. Check the attachments for conditions and criteria.

EXPO ‘TREASURE’ – London (UK) – 14-17 Juin 2012

TREASURE - London’s visionary jewellery show 14–17 June 2012

EXPO 'TREASURE' - London (UK) - 14-17 Juin 2012 dans Christiane WICHERT (DE) treasure-logo-2-300x203

« Treasure 2012, London’s visionary jewellery show, is the best place to purchase the most beautiful, exciting and vibrant contemporary jewellery anywhere in the UK »

Some of the jewellers exhibited :

Jeehyun Chung, a recent graduate from Edinburgh College of Art, makes oriental and contemporary style jewellery inspired by blending moments from travels across Europe with traditional Korean art and crafts

« By extending the body with jewellery you can design your identity and express your personality. This fundamental relation between body and jewellery was source of inspiration for my « BodyJewellery – JewelleryBody » collection . In some designs I focused on the appearance of the material, in others I gave priority to how the jewellery is made or how to wear it. »
« Referencing the disruption of nature’s order through my work, I create new life forms that appear as direct replications of recognizable organic matter yet they are not quite as they seem.
Having accumulated an assortment of natural forms and materials based on their intrinsic characters, the process of casting helps me to amalgamate these ever evolving hybrids, deceptively leading to mistaken identity. By acting as the divine creator, I am mimicking the power we have to alter nature’s path, which ultimately leads to chaos and the sinister presence lurking throughout the work.«
« Since I can remember I have been a bit of a magpie, hoarding incessantly anything miniature or eclectic that has caught my eye. Born and brought up in Northern Ireland, with parents involved in the Antique business it was moving to Edinburgh in the late eighties to attend Edinburgh College of Art that I became an avid collector of ephemera. As my time at Art College progressed it became clear that the things I was collecting were becoming the inspiration for my work and this is when I started to use these actual found objects in my work. Straight after graduation I set up my business and have exhibited internationally ever since. My work has been featured widely in press and publications, is represented in many public and private collections and in 2007 I was shortlisted for the prestigious ‘Jerwood Applied Arts Prize – Jewellery’.«

« …Colour has always been a significant feature of her jewellery. By introducing the translucent qualities of silicone with bright pigments, alongside the shifting reflective surfaces of precious metal and plastics, she conveys the qualities of underwater life forms. »

« No chemicals are used in the creation of Bioplastic jewellery, which means it will not last forever »

RenushRenush -Contempory hand made, moulded leather jewellery
« Renush is the creation of designer and maker Renáta Koch, a graduate in Footwear and Accessories from Cordwainers College at the London College of Fashion. Taking her inspiration from the contours of the human body and the characteristics of materials used, Renáta uses traditional techniques to create thoroughly modern and highly original pieces »
« I was first inspired by a tutor to pursue a career in jewellery design. I loved to make small sculptures and turn them into playful wearable objects. From the moment I was introduced to enamelling at Edinburgh College of Art I immediately loved its instantaneous effects. I find the enamelling process fascinating from applying the enamel to metal to firing it in a kiln. The most satisfying part for me is when the layers of rich colour are rubbed back to reveal patterns and textures underneath. My love for the city is the inspiration behind my work. I initially paint my ideas onto enamel panels and then translate these drawings into tactile, sculptural forms that play with line, texture and colour. My recent collection consists of earrings, pendants and brooches made from oxidised silver, iron and enamel. I oxidise the silver to create an industrial feel which compliments the bold colours that feature throughout my jewellery designs.«
« Veiled jewellery reflects my assumption that although certainty is often required in modern society, ambiguous expression has been the most distinctive characteristic found in Japanese values and religious beliefs«

EXPO ‘MicroCosmi Preziosi’ – Boffi Barberini, Roma (IT) – 29 Mai-1er Juin 2012

MicroCosmi Preziosi

MicroCosmi Preziosi” is an exibition of 12 Italian designers about the contemporary jewel, to be held from the 29th of May to the 1st ofJune 2012.

MicroCosmi Preziosi -Gioielli contemporanei

Jewels as microsculptures to wear, with plastic, metal, precious and semi precious stones.
MicroCosmi … because every jewel may represent a universe, a world, a history to tell and to be told, where the artist can go beyond his bounds to test new forms
Emotions …. which emerge slowly…. from the physical contact, from the possession!
Jewels thought as small worlds, in which everyone can find a new nuance..unique realities with a story to tell, which  amaze us!
Jewels have a magic power ….. they express a vital force, our passion beyond their value….
A jewel can blossom by the ability of  the mind …. by the skill of the hands and by the warm of fire.
The  daring trends, which have  emerged from the last VicenzaOro Exhibition, encourage us to abandon  tradition for the new proposals of the contemporary jewel, which are in constant evolution.
Infact, the creation af a  jewel  is not based on any clear models, but it is the result of a  continuous research and testing.

The following are some of the most important emerging artists in this field:
Francesca GabrielliLuigi MarianiClaudio RanfagniLuisa BruniChiara ScarpittiFernando BettoStefania LucchettaOrietta BomèJános Gábor VargaAgnieszka  KierstanEnrico FranchiBarbara Uderzo.

« Their vocation, like their origin, is extremely varied,  it is the result of geographical and training differences, but  it also shows surprising elements of union, as the reflection on the material and on the volume ». (Alba Cappellieri)
As a consequence of that, jewels are  the result of suggestions and  intuitions …. some of them are more traditional, some others are definitely handicraft, others are the result of designers and goldsmiths work.
