Jewellery exhibitions are often presented in sterile glass cabinets. This leads to a distance between object and viewer and limits the freedom, which could develop in this sensual encounter.
Here, at the exhibition tog_ther !, curated by Gisbert Stach and Rose Stach, the motto is: chairs instead of showcases!
Twenty international author jewellery artists gather with their extraordinary objects in dialogue with strongly individualistic seats, from weight benches to a sandbag wall.
A potently interactive chair by Christoph Zellweger from Switzerland; a self-portrait stool by Arek Wolski from Warsaw; cheap pretense and reality from two female Budapest artists; and David Bielander Thonet chair sausage links, are among what’s to find.
Two female artists from Budapest play with cheap pretence and reality. Emese Benczúr forms the words “LET IT SHINE” on a rainbow-coloured surface using ear studs, while Réka Lörincz presents grooming gloves with enticingly glittering golden nails on a lavatory lid in her piece of art titled  Woman at Work. David Bielander, a native of Basel now living in Munich, even transforms the chair itself into a jewellery object by removing elements of the curved armrest of a Thonet chair and shaping them into sausage necklaces, explaining that the sausages had always been present in these chairs and he has now “set them free”!

Natural Histrionics

Artists:   Nel LinssenHyorim Lee —  Anja EichlerStephanie Hensle —  Konrad Laimer —  Jie SunDorit SchubertSusanne Elstner

An International Art Jewellery Exhibition Inspired by Nature.
Chinese artist Jie Sun presents his ‘Big Fish’ golden Koi Carp brooches which when worn appear to swim straight out of the body. South Korean Hyorim Lee fashions finely feathered necklaces from colourful layers of softly luxurious leather. From her collection ‘On Death and Beauty’ comes a Fantastical Mr Fox fur stole by German artist Stephanie Hensle, painstakingly constructed from thousands of etched brass segments – a tactile, glamorous sensory experience, Stephanie also crafts shimmering Butterfly brooches from paper-thin metals etched and tinted pastel colours, as delicate and light as gossamer wings.
Quail eggs are the medium of choice for Anja Eichler’s sensitive collection which uses the symbolism of a fragile egg to reflect on our human condition – falling, failing, repairing and rising up again, stronger for the experiences we have encountered and survived. ‘Out of the Ashes’ by Susanne Elstner is a collection of jewellery from charcoal and fine gold which also has a point to make. Of it she says “Miracles even occur on barren land. Therefore, at times something new and beautiful can grow out of a piece of burned wood.”
Konrad Laimer is inspired by the plants and animals of his Alpine environment, where he fashions elegant bangles, rings and brooches from the horns of Alpine goats and Chamois. Plant life inspires Dorit Schubert, who uses traditional German lace making techniques, reviving this dying craft, to create her delightful collection of floral jewellery – delicate transparent and light – though actually surprisingly robust! Finally Nel Linssen, award winning doyenne of art jewellery, presents her collection of snake like necklaces and bangles – superbly intricate folded paper constructions inspired by rhythms and structures in the botanical world.
And to rival the drama of nature visitors will be invited to choose their favourite piece from the exhibition and declaim their enthusiasm for it by taking part in our ‘Natural Histrionics’ video compilation, which will be screened during the show! If a little help is needed to get over stage fright – all who participate in the video project will also be entered into a draw to win a £100 KLJG voucher.

sex drugs .... - werkschau - 28-09/12-10 2012

The perceptions of Dante Alighieri, who described the seven deadly sins and seven virtues in his Divine Comedy, are the starting point of the competition and exhibition project entitled Sex, Drugs & Rock ’n’ Roll…Vices or Lifestyle?
Dante Alighieri (1265—1321), the great Italian poet of the late Middle Ages, referred to lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride as deadly sins. We wanted to find out what jewelry artists think about vices and lifestyle in our day and age and asked them to illustrate, using their medium, the ideas associated in the past with sin and vice. Since the 1960s, the notion of sin, which was often associated with youth protests and women’s emancipation, has under gone major changes. Today, people in all modern societies are much less prone to regard sexuality in principle as a sin. Even the approach to drugs is much more differentiated, although we know that the use of and dealing with hard drugs are a worldwide problem. And it is also evident that even work, sports, TV and many other things can turn into “drugs” — not to mention alcohol, this socially acceptable drug which, as of late, is again being used excessively, especially by youths. In the light of the crises of the 21st century, the seven deadly sins and seven virtues described by Dante Alighieri have gained a new relevance. However, in addition to the “traditional” seven deadly sins, there are a number of entirely new vices and tres passes that play an important role in everyday life in the year 2012. Destruction of the environment, excessive arms build up in view of permanent hunger crises, or genetic engineering can be regarded as sins of our time and are topics that dominate both the media and the public discourse today.
On the one hand, the Sex, Drugs & Rock ’n’ Roll….. Vices or Lifestyle? competition puts contemporary jewelry in the lime light. All over the world, this highly traditional medium is being used by more or less academically trained designers in a largely liberal artistic fashion. Any material is allowed, and an almost unlimited spectrum of ideas can be expressed in these body related creations. What unites the protagonists of modern jewelry is the idea that their medium is neither supposed to serve merely as a fashionable accessory nor as a means of representation. Artistically designed jewelry is above all a carrier of ideas. On the other hand, the theme of the competition is particularly interesting for jewelry creators because jewelry has been regarded from a moral aspect since the time of the Enlightenment. Expensive jewels — which only the very rich can afford — still evoke envy and resentment, provoke crime and are associated with vice. Especially in this respect, contemporary jewelry is considered a counter-concept. It is intended for imaginative wearers who appreciate inventive creativity and individuality. We would like to thank all the participants for their contributions and our jurors, Barbara Schmidt and Giovanni Corvaja, for their expert selection.
