From high-concept shops to cocktail bars: every style-conscious place these days displays a mounted fox or peacock in the window. Taxidermy, the mounting of dead animals, is hot. But what happens when you apply taxidermy to contemporary jewellery design? In the exhibition Beauty of the Beast Museum Arnhem presents the work of more than 15 international designers and artists who make a connection between taxidermy, jewellery and visual arts. The exhibition presents, on the one hand, wearable jewellery and fashion accessories such as necklaces, brooches, bags, hats, hair ornaments and shoes. But it also includes more sculptural and autonomous work.

COUP de COEUR : Tanel VEENRE, a BLACK ENVY ……….

Classé dans : COUP DE COEUR,Estonie (EE),Tanel VEENRE (EE) — bijoucontemporain @ 1:26

Tanel VEENRE, a BLACK ENVY ……….

« A beautiful piece of jewellery is exciting. Excitement is a quality that comes into being upon collapse of the quantifiable and measurable into the inexplicable and personal. Fleeing from gold-edged emptiness binds the artist’s soul with the thing being created. It’s all somehow wordlessly conspiratorial. Artist and jewellery become witnesses to a crime in which they are both complicit.
Anxiety may contain embarrassment and brazenness, mockery levelled at the opinion of the court.

A talented jeweller says: The quality of the jewel is in its intellectuality. For an artist the jewel is something very personal through which he can express his concerns, feelings, ideas.
Veenre likes to combine metal with such a natural details like rope or coal (back to the Stone Age?). He makes historical collars out of shining fish-scales, which he strings together with little glass beads. As a result his work looks very fine with its dynamics, femininity and grace. It is experimental and theatrical, there is a fine sense of drama inside. »

The “Innocent” project gives me the chance to express an issue I am very much concerned with: the abuse against animals. The plastic toys are a way of representing an innocence that can only imply the horrible things that could / might have happened. I cut the animal toys the way butchers do, whilst others I use in twisted positions. After that I melt them, creating situations that I imagine they end up in. I paint them in lively colors that are not specific to those animals and this way the first impression of the audience is of a happy piece of jewelry and only then, after a closer examination, they truly see the animal and its suffering. Most of them are hand painted so that every brush stroke I make allows me to connect with that animal and feel it’s pain. The electroformed pieces represent the animals that live in cold metal cages, while the silk represents a natural material that stands for blood (red silk) and the darkness of the night (black silk). By creating more feminine pieces of jewelry I am trying to nurture those animals’ suffering.
1% of all money made from selling these pieces of jewelry will be donated to an animal shelter.
Materials: plastic toys, electroformed, alpaca, silver, paint, varnish, onyx, silk, pigments, copper, gold leaf. Izabella Petrut

EXPO ‘WWWA’ – Estonian Museum of Applied Art & Design, Tallinn (EE) – 7 Nov. 2014- 18 Janv. 2015

WWWA [Words & Works from a World Away (Sõnad ja tööd sealt kaugelt)]Estonian Museum of Applied Art & Design
A collaboration of Estonian and Australian jewellery artists
WWWA - estonia
OPENING 7 november 2014 – 5pm
Kuraator: Claire McArdle

What do they say about us on the other side of the world?
And what do you know about them?
This exhibition unites the northern and southern hemispheres through the work of jewellery and object artists from Australia & Estonia. In each country statements were collected from ordinary members of the public about their knowledge and opinion of the other country. Each artist chose a statement about their country from someone on the other side of the world. The piece they made is a reaction to this statement.
Words spoken across the globe invite a personal study of our own culture and a reaction to other’s perceptions of who we are. Each piece is a navigation of an outsider’s perspective and the resulting realisations and revelations about our own identity.
The two cultures have been explored through unverified perceptions and understandings. The resulting objects are repositories of both cultural and personal narratives. They examine the global flow of information between two physically and culturally separate countries and provoke an international exploration of self.

EXPO ‘Tanel Veenre: Simply Too Naturesque’ – Putti Art Gallery, Rīga (Latvia/lettonie) – 30 Oct-15 Nov 2014

Tanel Veenre: Simply Too Naturesque

Art Gallery PUTTI presents Tanel Veenre’s personal exhibition “Simply Too Naturesque* » as a part of Riga Fashion Week Estonian contemporary artists.

Tanel_ veenre too naturesque

« I am against nature. I don’t dig nature at all. I think nature is very unnatural. I think the truly natural things are dreams, which nature can’t touch with decay.Bob Dylan
« I am not sure where to draw the line. The only thing I know is what I feel. And it`s urge, it`s call of creating. So all the forms are gowing out of my fingers like grass from the ground. Until my art becomes nature, human nature.
I am not copying, neither denying or defeating nature. It`s more like echoing it, filtering it through my inner soils. So it becaomes couture – but as Goethe has put: « The unnatural, that too is natural ».
Let it be then burlesque, arabesque and baroque – nature full of itself. Naturesque* « .
Tanel Veenre

*Urban Dictionary: An adjective that describes something very attractive in nature, something that has striking natural beauty and is acellent in the world.

[palindrome] is a word, phrase, number or other sequence of symbols or elements, whose meaning may be interpreted the same way in either forward or reverse direction.
Many believe that symmetrical objects have an inner harmony, and value them for this. In nature, symmetry is approximate. For example, plant leaves, while considered symmetric, rarely match up exactly when folded in half. If there is no such thing as perfect symmetry in nature, can we find perfection in imperfections? What happens when two artists decide to mirror their own work but also reflect and bounce off each other’s visual language? Tanel Veenre and Märta Mattsson have been working on a set of exhibitions based on palindromes during 2014. In the exhibition, Solos – Never Odd or Even, Part III at Platina they have developed two new series of work, Heartology and Phantoms. Their new pieces has been created under an echo of two minds exploring the contradictory meanings of symmetry in nature and life

 MÄRTA MATTSSON
PHANTOMS

A shadow is relative darkness caused by light rays being intercepted by an opaque body. It is an indication that something has been present and it can appear like a ghostlike figure. I am facinated by the human mind and the duality that excist within people. The light side and the dark side and all the grey areas inbetween and within the human mind is what thrives me as an artist. Shadows are like a distorted palindrome of oneself… It is what hides behind the surface.

HEARTOLOGY
Heart is an archetype, distilled shape full of meanings and myths. Usually most perfect symmetrical form, ultimate palindrome. I have been driven by hearts for a long time, but for this exhibition I decided to get clear – I have to carve a heart every day to get into kind of mental state where I am led mainly by my intuition. I didn’t want to construct or combine, it should be more like a purifying process. – Tanel Veenre

Tanel Veenre : Beyond the Animus

Tanel Veenre, Brooch, 2015Tanel VeenreBrooch: Palindrome II (silhouette), 2015 – Seahorses, artificial resin, rock crystal, silver, cosmic dust

Tanel Veenre turns jewellery made from seahorses into playful, poetic and dramatic compositions. He sees seahorses as ballerinas on a stage who can create incredible ornaments just with their bodies.
Tanel is also interested in masks. Masks which can conceal yet also reveal something essential, fundamental, even animal. He likes to present rawness in a delicate fashion, clothing this in a vulnerable shell.
Tanel’s work is clearly human oriented. He addresses psychological subjects and mainly seeks out for inner sources, playing with impulse and intellect, finding the animal beyond the animus.

SOLOS-NEVER ODD OR EVEN, Part I and Part II

« Me and Tanel only have palindromes on our minds right now… Here is the concept behind our collaboration and our two upcoming exhibitions in Munich next week.
SOLOS
NEVER ODD OR EVEN
Tanel Veenre & Märta Mattsson
[palindrome] is a word, phrase, number or other sequence of symbols or elements, whose meaning may be interpreted the same way in either forward or reverse direction.
Palindromes like, A NUT FOR A JAR OF TUNA or EVIL RATS ON NO STAR LIVE, might not make so much sense to us but nonetheless they are symmetrical riddles that play with our perception of how we see things.

Will we BORROW OR ROB ideas from one another? Will we feel the need to be the one who MUST SELL AT TALLEST SUM? Will our work end up at the same LEVEL? Or will ‘DAMMIT I’M MAD!’ for doing this pop up in our heads? Our new series of work has been created under an echo of two minds exploring the contradictory meanings of symmetry in nature and life. Mirrors are commonly used for personal grooming or admiring oneself. In the mirror you can see yourself, but not quite… The mirror image is reversed. In a mutual admiration can we create a MEGA GEM? This might get interesting, WON’T IT NOW? Have we hit your RADAR? Come and see this TOP SPOT that is TOO HOT TO HOOT! »
