Klassiker der Schmuck 2012
Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen, Deutschland

This year there will be a retrospective exhibition of the work of a « Modern Classic » designer. In 2012 the chosen designer is the German goldsmith Jens Rüdiger Lorenzen. Together with Francesco Pavan, Lorenzen was the first goldsmith to be awarded the Herbert Hofmann Prize, back in 1973. The award presentation ceremony, which this year is being held on Saturday, 17 March 2012, is always one of the highlights at SCHMUCK. Lorenzen, who was born in 1942 in Hagen, Westphalia, taught at the « Staatliche Zeichenakadamie » in Hanau from 1974 to 1985, while also acting as a visiting lecturer at the « Hochschule für Gestaltung » in Pforzheim, at which college he then, in 1985, took up an appointment as a professor. He continued to teach there in the jewellery design department until retiring in 2008.

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse, SCHMUCK will as usual be setting off abroad, this time to Valencia in Spain. Each year since 2006 the exhibition has been hosted in a range of countries, among them Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (Municipal Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua), the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York) and the French town of Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor).

 Ten artists, including the most significant in the international arena, are witnesses to a new address at the end of the twentieth century figurative formulas for the liberating effect of the postmodern movement and which has grown in the last decade with extreme views, neo-baroque, neo-Manierist and neo-Symbolist.
The new imagery is rampant blending truth and fiction, memory and its deformation, the accuracy and vagueness, the horror and pleasure, eroticism and pornography, the myth and mysticism, humor and sarcasm : is the culture of kitsch.
The term improperly used to disparaging assessments by the great German bookish Hermann Broch, who quoted him in his famous text of 1933 and, later, the shooting in writing in 1950-1951, assumed negative meaning in the dialectic of confrontation classical values to those of post-Romanticism imbued with a culture symbolist aesthetic, decadent that dominated the late nineteenth century. Not inferior art, then, but the sublime beauty of art in all its excesses even the most perverse, sacrifice the values of harmony and balance.

Château éthéré / CASTLE IN THE AIR / ÕHULOSS is a group of 6 jewellery artists from Estonia: Kadri MÄLK, Tanel VEENRE, Piret HIRV, Eve MARGUS-VILLEMS, Kristiina LAURITS, VILLU PLINK [www.klimt02.net]. Formed in 1999, the group has since exhibited their works jointly in Estonia, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Portugal, Hungary & China. CASTLE IN THE AIR has compiled & published four catalogues [1999, 2003, 2010 & 2011], while art historians & critics from various countries have sited the work such as German art historian Rüdiger Joppien « …the walls of Castle in the Air are permeable; its content, ephemeral. It takes the form of a projection, developing at a magical moment like some object that in the morning rays of the sun seems close enough to touch, although it is kilometres away. Art bridges that gap; desire overcomes reality. »

Once more SODA brings together a group of contemporary artists who use different colours, materials and themes to exhibit their work for the SODAmore exhibition this summer.

“SODAmore Summer 2011: Contemporary Art Jewellery Exhibition,” which was also organized last year, will host many new international artists. This show will challenge you to forget the old contours and styles you were once used to, to be swiftly replaced by deserving contemporary art.

Including approximately 70 pieces, the exhibition will present prominent artists of Contemporary Art Jewellery which has become an acclaimed area of interest for international art collectors who use various materials like glass, metal, rubber, plexiglass, wood, paper, plastic and ceramic.

The exhibition hosts artists Zwetelina Alexieva, Ara Kuo, Ritsuko Ogura, Selen Özus, Lina Peterson, Nikolay Sardamov, Michihiro Sato, Salima Thakker, Flora Vagi and Tanel Veenre. Some rings are made from hairbrushes while some bracelets are carved out of cardboard; ultimately the exhibit will surprise you and make you question the definition of “precious” jewellery.

Platina welcomes Tanel Veenre to his first solo exhibition, Paradise regained, in the gallery. The exhibition has previously been shown in Tallin (Gallery Marz) and in Munich (Historische Baumaterialien).
Tanel Veenre was born into an art and music loving family. His city grandfather played piano in cafes and accordion at home, his other grandfather from Põlva County played the Estonian zither. His father and brother are violinists. But Tanel Veenre didn’t become a musician eventhough the music plays a roll in his works. Instead, he found a path that his mother would have perhaps chosen if life had been different- to create visual art. He decided to enrol in the jewellery programme at the Academy of Arts. These studies led him to Kadri Mälk, who taught him to see the big picture – the biggest picture.
With that in mind Tanel Veenre has developed a very personal style, not like any other. To wear his jewellery is to step into another world in which reality is erased and becomes a dreamy landscape. His collection of jewellery is like a collection of poems. No wonder he got great success worldwide. « Jewellery is crystallized poetry, a precious, compact genre with a finelyhoned vocabulary of patterns. Spare but taut. Art requires to be oneeis own storyteller.

Tanel Veenre lives and works in Estonia as a freelance jewellery artist. He has also worked as a fashion and advertisement photographer, fashion editor of « Eesti Ekspress », editor-in-chief of cultural magazine « Muusa » and cultural editor of « Eesti Päevaleht ». Tanel Veenre is working since 2005 as a teacher in Estonian Academy of Arts.

Everybody is kindly invited into Tanel Veenre‘s paradise in Tallinn gallery MÄRZ until March 13th. Open from Wednesday until Sunday 12.00-18.00.

 

 

The latest works, exhibition named “Paradise regained” fracture the shell of doubt and tell a paradoxically simple and complex story at the same time. It’s divided into two parts – “Eden” and “Crosses”. The latter is full of interpretations and hidden meanings, of faith and love, of associations with the pain on the cross and of the symbol of the heart – “Heart on a Cross”./…/
“Eden” is based more on the desire and the need to go back to the Paradise. The dreams of the Garden, guarded by the Cherub with a sword, permeated by light, are created with a modern-day feeling, playful and mischievous, quite an opposite to the sacral “Crosses”. These are the series comprised out of fishing floats, silver, pearls and covered in cosmic dust.

I love the blue as bright as it gets. My american gallerist said once – you northern artists do`nt use much colour. But if you do – you do it with whole passion. It seems that twilight-nations know the real value of bright colours.

Her selections from the chaos of life … offer bridges of meaning between experience and memory, between the mind and the senses. Crucially, everything is fixed by the many gestures of making, in the same way that the complete composition in painting can be held together by the handling of paint on surface. The objects offer intimations of shared experience. They frame private worlds within a capricious external world.
*Tanel Veenre: a beautiful piece of jewellery is exciting. Excitement is a quality that comes into being upon collapse of the quantifiable and measurable into the inexplicable and personal. Fleeing from gold-edged emptiness binds the artist’s soul with the thing being created. It’s all somehow wordlessly conspirational. Artist and jewellery become witnesses to a crime in which they are both complicit.
* Piret Hirv’s signs of suspense mostly cause muteness. To live means to be lost (J. Ortega y Gasset). Who does not feel lost, will certainly lose his way, i.e. will never find himself. And only the brightening in the tree tops may show the way out of the forest. (Kadri Mälk)
* Especially lavish are the so-called luxury items of Kristiina Laurits. The lacy, sensuously curved, sometimes useless items and brooches are like peculiar ecstatic whim. It is unpredictable and irrational. It makes us smile.(Kadri Mälk)
* For Eve Margus, transparently glowing, dreamlike materials make the disturbance, when coming in touch with reality, physically palpable. Engraved translucent quartz and chalcedony and opal, carved silky horn and antlers, are tactile in themselves, like their treatment here. (Kadri Mälk)
* The work of Villu Plink is male and laconic, and it is different. He is picturesque and full of images. An image holds, and is not to be disputed. (Kadri Mälk)

Unusual SHOP : « In Stock » – goes to ASIA during Taiwan Designers’ Week 2010 – 3-12 Sept 2010

‘In Stock’ the jewellery pop-up store in a hardware shop coat is a blessed concept initiated by the three Dutch designers Ineke Heerkens, Jantje Fleischhut, Jeannette Jansen since 2009. This project of an unconventional display of contemporary jewellery design shows work, which lingers on the edge of design and art. Around seventy renowned international designers produce for this concept multiples in an edition of five – still mostly handmade.

For the display, blister packaging on perforated wooden walls is used, price labels, cash register, a supermarket trolley at the entrance.

After popping up in cities like Munich and Amsterdam, ‘In Stock’ is coming to Asia (Taipei) during the Taiwan Designers’ Week 2010 with the help of the two guest curators Yu-Chun Chen and Min-Ling Hsieh.
