The shape of a gun on the wall, known as an icon of Ted Noten’s work, will gradually change into a jewel jungle as a result of the stories told by the rings that are left behind. Jewellery reflects the soul of a city! Atelier Ted Noten is going to present the same concept in different cities all over the world, like: Tokyo, Paris, Moscow, New York, Sao Paulo.

What does Noten do with the rings you left behind? “I surely find a way to deal with that!”

« Jewellery has incredibly many ways of communicating. It forms a direct link with what means to be human, with what is small, with the psychology of traditions that can be found in all nationalities and periods. »
The conceptual jewellery designer Ted Noten began his career in the early 1990s. His jewellery implicitly reflects on the discipline, using for that purpose the media, materials and techniques that we normally associate with timeless beauty and eternal value, such as gold, pearls and diamonds, but also inexpensive materials such as plastic and ephemeral media such as video and performances. For the presentations of his objects and installations he chooses both traditional jewellery shops and galleries and museums of modern art, as well as the public domain on occasion. Noten has had a profound influence on the discipline, for example by introducing the longing for beauty and ornament in the vanguard again and through his playing with high and low. He combines deadly serious research and critical ideas with an almost childlike humor, absurdity and sense of theatricality. « I find it equally interesting to design something for a museum or for a souvenir shop, for a stinking rich collector or for a whore in Amsterdam. I like to fool people with my work. » Many of his designs are small and tender, others are out to provoke and are very showy. Each one of them tells a story about jewellery, not in the last place because of the great attention that Noten has lavished on details.
There is no shortage of well-known designs. In the course of his career he has given many old piece of jewellery a new raison d’être by incorporating it in transparent acryl, such as the Lyppens Bag (2005). The project Chew your own Brooch (1999) gave people the opportunity to « design » a shape with the gum they were chewing, which Noten then cast in silver and fitted with a clasp. The Global Tactile Pieces II (2006) are impressions of a journey that Noten made with the Siberia Express from Tokyo to Moscow. Tianjin, for example, shows a drill with miniature human figures making love because Noten was struck by the almost sexual energy of the city of Tanjin which, unlike many of Russian cities, does not look back in anger but looks confidently towards future. Noten placed a ring dispenser in the Amsterdam Red Light District with the title Be Nice To A Girl, Buy Her A Ring (2009). Clients of the hookers were invited to buy a ring for the lady of their choice for a mere €2,50.
Ted Noten has received numerous awards for his creations, such as the Francoise van den Bosch Award for his oeuvre in 2008. On the occasion of the presentation of the award in Stedelijk Museum’s-Hertogenbosch he showed highlights from his oeuvre in a carefully orchestered catwalk show. An impression of the oeuvre of that catwalk can be seen in the MOT. Objects that combine to give an impression of the oeuvre of this recalcitrant jewellery designer are placed motionless beneath transparent cylinders. Besides this static presentation of the catwalk, the interactive installation Wanna Swap Rings? – can be seen on the wall.

SCHMUCK 2011 – Munich (DE) 16-22 mars 2011 – PROGRAMME

Please find enclosed the program of the Schmuck 2011 during the International Trade Fair in Munich.

This special exhibition is the eldest exhibition of contemporary jewellery work in the world. It takes place since 1959 every year during the International Trade Fair in March. Except the transport cost until Munich the participation in the special show is free of charge for you. Three contributions of Schmuck 2011 will be awarded with the Herbert Hofmann Prize. The prize commemorates Dr. Her-bert Hofmann, the founder of the special show in 1959. In addition the jury of the Bavarian States Prize will look at the works in the special show. The Bavarian States Prize is awarded to 10 contri-bution of applied art within all contribution of the International Trade Fair. This prize is awarded with 5.000 €

The selection of the 62 exhibits to feature in the special show SCHMUCK 2011 was made by Dr Rüdiger Joppien (Head of the Department of Art Nouveau and Modernism at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg), a recognised expert in the applied arts. In total over 650 designers had submitted applications to be granted a space to exhibit within SCHMUCK 2011. Featured in the exhibition are the works of a number of designers of international renown – names like Kimiaki Kageyama (Japan), Ted Noten (Netherlands), Lisa Walker (New Zealand), Ike Jünger (Germany) and Peter Bauhuis (Germany). For the first time this year the exhibition will also include work from China, Mexico and Turkey.

Klassiker der Moderne 2011 : Manfred Bischoff
In 2011, as in every year, there will be a retrospective of the works of one of the ‘classics of the Modern’. SCHMUCK 2011 will present the key works of Manfred Bischoff, a German goldsmith living in Italy who is regarded around the world as one of today´s leading contemporary jewellery designers. At the Internationale Handwerksmesse one of the many prizes he has received is the Bavarian State Prize (2005), an award which enjoys the very highest regard in the field of arts and crafts.

SCHMUCK the special show culminates in the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 19 March 2011. In addition SCHMUCK 2011 is accompanied by a whole host of other events taking place in galleries, museums and arts institutes in Munich.

 

After the Internationale Handwerksmesse SCHMUCK goes on tour, this time, for the first time, also to France.
The French town which was given this honour is Cagnes-sur-Mer (Espace Solidor) in Provence. In recent years this small town has developed a reputation as a meeting place for statement jewellery designers. SCHMUCK first started to travel around the world in 2006, and has been seen in Australia (RMIT Gallery, Melbourne), Great Britain (Birmingham City University), Poland (National Art Gallery, Lódz), Italy (Oratorio di San Rocco, Padua) and the US (Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

« In the mid 1960s Wendy Ramshaw and David Watkins ran a small firm called Optik Art Jewellery. They designed acrylic fashion jewellery inspired by Pop art paintings of the period. Later in 1967 they designed and sold paper jewellery all over the world. This was prior to a new revolution in jewelry design which was looming, throughout the 70s with non-precious materials and artistic ideas replacing material values. Ramshaw and Watkins were among the protagonists of the London scene. Ramshaw started out as an illustrator and textile designer. She has received numerous prestigious awards for her works, which include the Millennium Medal for Queen Elizabeth II. Her husband David Watkins was a jazz pianist, now a sculptor, and jewelry artist. Through his unconventional techniques and methods of working with materials he creates a unique style all of his own; from 1984 until 2006 he was Professor of Metalwork and Jewelry at the Royal College of Art in London. »

A Bit of Clay on the Skin: New Ceramic Jewelry explores the manifold appeal of ceramics, especially porcelain, in jewelry. Organized by the Fondation d’Entreprise Bernardaud and curated by the renowned German-born goldsmith and jewelry artist Monika Brugger, the exhibition showcases the versatility and allure of the medium, which can be modeled or cast, used alone or with metal, wood, and stone, and vary in color and texture. Best known as the stuff of the luxurious and the mundane, of fine tableware and technical equipment, when used in jewelry, porcelain sparks the visual and physical sensations to become an object of desire.
The exhibition showcases the scope and ingenuity of the more than one hundred works on view and features the work of 18 cutting-edge jewelry artists, including creations by such notables as Peter Hoogeboom, Evert Nijland, Ted Noten (The Netherlands), Gésine Hackenberg (Germany), Marie Pendariès (France), and Shu-Lin Wu (Taiwan). While some make reference to traditional jewelry in materials and symbolism, others altogether redefine it in substance, form, and matter.
« Even though the Egyptians produced seal rings in faience, and the Greeks and Romans gilded terracotta to imitate gold, the use of ceramics in the fabrication of jewelry was abandoned centuries ago, » says curator Monika Brugger. « Today many artists, like those assembled in this show, are popularizing porcelain as a compelling material for jewelry. »
« Ceramic jewelry embodies the creative transformation of a humble Earth material by art and industry into a wearable object of great refinement and sensuality, » notes MAD’s Jewelry Curator Ursula Ilse-Neuman. « Exploring new currents in art jewelry is a vital part of the Museum’s mission, » she continues. « We are delighted to present these visually and intellectually engaging works to a New York audience. »

Je vous avouerais que les créations (bijoux ????) de  Ted Noten ne m’inspirent … rien !
Mais là, cette mise en scène …… aaah …. il y a « quelque chose » …. en tout cas, ça m’a fait sourire !

An exhibition of work by jewellery designer Ted Noten at Stedelijk Museum’s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands (Dec. 2008) was launched with a catwalk show, « Tedwalk » , where 12 models wore 12 pieces created since 1995 to 2008. (Photographs by Sharon Mor Yosef and Guus Schoth)

« On November 23d, Ted Noten was awarded with the Francoise van den Bosch Award, an international prize for jewellery makers…. We have combined the award ceremony with a catwalk presentation for the opening of a solo-exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum’s-Hertogenbosch.
Ted explicitly did not want to show his works in glass boxes on socles, and he has always wanted to organize a catwalk show with professional models. We have collaborated with the Amsterdam Fashion Institute in organizing this event and have attracted many professionals that have (partly) donated their services. During the show, 12 models wore 12 pieces from Ted’s oeuvre. After all models returned and placed their items on wooden circles on stage, the lights went off and 9 working men entered the room with perspex covers. All works were covered, lights went on again and there was the expo that stands for 6 weeks (until January 11th). » (Design Magazine Dezeen)

« Leo Caballero and Amador Bertomeu, both from Barcelona, met in the late 90s while sharing a studio-workshop. In 2003 they began the on-line website, Klimt02 which has become the go-to website for all matters that involve art jewelry worldwide. Last year (2008) they opened a gallery space in Barcelona. At this year’s SNAG conference in Philadelphia, Leo gave an informative lecture about the web and its relation to art jewelry. en tout cas, si ce n’est le chocolat, qui inspire enormément (et particulièrement celui servi aux soirées de « l’Ambassadeur » ….. …..), la denrée alimentaire, détournée, inspire, et aspire à son rôle de bijou …. le stade « collier de pâtes » est largement dépassé, actuellement, un repas complet est possible, des « antipasti » au dessert ! quant ce n’est pas ce qui reste après un bon « gueuleton » qui nous est servi comme bijou … n’est ce pas Patricia Lemaire ???!!?

En tout cas, le thème a l’air d’être dans l’air du temps : voir le projet « Aesthetic Nutrition » d’Ana Cardim (juillet 2010) que je viens de trouver dans la dernière newsletter de Klimt02  : « With her project ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’, Ana Cardim seeks attention for the idea of the difference in quantity, and levels of value, between the esthetic value of gold and the value given to the basic human need for food. »

Placing on the face or breast each have different meaning. « Meat. The word alone polarizes. For some it represents the sensuous, the erotic, life and carnal lust. For others it arouses associations of morbidity, decay and death. In its archaic and raw state it triggers aversion in many, but is welcome when served as a fragrant roast. It is peddled in discount shops and bargain counters, or traded for 200 euros per kilo.  Delving into these contrasting worlds, Stephanie Hensle explores the luxury of meat in context of adornment, indulging our lust for both on many levels. Inspired by the art of butchery, she packs resins, jewels and other traditional jewellery pieces into sausages and pâté. Throughout she redefines not only a typology for jewellery but also our relationships to creating and acquiring it. The act of slicing („100 grams of brooch, please“) defines the pedant or brooch pieces while addressing the system of value associated with jewellery. Typical sausage netting, meat hooks or skewers become fasteners attaching the pieces to the wearer. Left over pieces are wrapped like cold cuts for the purchaser‘s consumption.  A third group of pieces reflects on the human body as meat. Neck and body pieces hang like detached organs or mysterious growths. Cut open, they allow a glimpse into the skin-colored insides. And remind us, that the line between beauty and disquiet is fine yet elegant. » (Stephanie Hensle)

Manolya Konuk – ‘Le collier de la Reine’ – Here, perhaps more than in the other pieces, the material has taken up all importance. The queen necklace was the necklace of Marie Antoinette and hence can be seen as a prelude to the French Revolution. Symbol of excess and decadence, this jewel, never worn, caused the demise of the French Monarchy. Playing with words again, this chocolate abundance can provoke a ‘’crise de foi(e)’ which can be translated both as ‘‘sick by food’ as ‘‘loss of faith’.

 

Jeannette Jansen utilise des papiers d’emballage de chocolat pour sa collection “Chocolate Eater”. Réalisées à la main, on peut même lire le nombre de calories que l’on porte en bracelet, collier ou boucles d’oreilles !

This jewellery collection is created in chocolate; necklaces, bangles and rings –designed specifically as romantic items for couples to eat together. Small, handcrafted production runs.
RUGGINE: Rusty iron in appearance, these are created using an old confectionary technique that uses cocoa powder dusting in its preparation.
BOULES: These are chocolates covered in an edible gold leaf foil effect.

« This body of work explores human interaction with objects, specifically the interaction of our lips with objects. While examining the psychological and sociological potency of chocolate in the pieces entitled Love Tokens, I became aware of the sensual power of our lips. This culminated in Chocolate, a collaborative interactive installation comprised of a series of impressions made in the gold foil wrappers of Ferrero Rocher chocolates. The impressions are of puckered lips or teeth. In its use of repetition, mass quantities of « faux » gold foil, reference to chocolate and to the mouth, the installation speaks of consumption, indulgence, passion, and consumerism. » (Anika Smulovitz)

«  Gioielli da mangiare! Cathy, una giovane studentessa di arte, che ama creare bijoux e li presenta nel suo blog “La prochaine fois” -  Tra i suoi lavori, troviamo accessori realizzati con la frutta secca, l’idea da cui sono nati è curiosa: Durante un viaggio in Francia, Cathy ha assaggiato la frutta  essiccata e in particolare ha molto apprezzato il kiwi. Ritornata a casa, ha cercato questo tipo di frutta nei negozi americani ma non ha trovato niente del genere. Ha deciso allora di acquistare un essiccatoio per realizzare da sè queste dolcezze. Prima di mangiarsele però, Cathy le fotografava e, osservando la bellezza di queste fettine di frutta, ha deciso di sperimentare qualcosa di nuovo. « The fruit has been sealed, with either lacquer or wax. I wanted to see if these would hold up better/longer than the raw ones. However, I’m not a fan because it changes the meaning of the pieces somewhat – being sealed, they stop being about the moment and instead go into the preservation. And wax = bad because it just flakes off. I’m still on the hunt for different ways to treat the surface!«

« For her current exhibition, de Jong has created a series of potato bijoux, « Pommes de Jong. » They consist of potatoes laid out to dry until they are totally shrivelled, and then dipped, roots and all, in a bath of molten gold, with surprising results – jewel-like objects in weird and wonderful forms.
Her interest in integrating the humble potato, which she cultivates in her garden in France, into her art, began in 2001 with her series of paintings inspired by Malevich, as the hair of The Farmer’s Wife (« Potato Hair »). This was followed in 2002 by a painted dialogue (« Harvest ») with the pioneering Russian artist.This theme continued with « Aardappeltaal’ (Potato Language), a collaboration with Jennifer Tee at the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven in 2003. In 2006, participated in the Biennale di Ceramica dell’arte (curated by Roberto Orth), in Albissola, Italy, with an installation of ceramic objects of « baked potatoes » for the home and garden of the Danish artist Asger Jorn (1914-1973).«

 project ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’, Ana Cardim

« How does nutrition, on a socio-economic level and in its’ most basic form, relate to the aesthetic values of today’s society? This question can only come from Ana Cardim, who has a passion to make interactive, sociable jewelry-art. This takes shape in her recent project “Aesthetic Nutrition”.
The project consists of a video, projected on a wall, three heaps of rice, chopsticks and three bowls containing one, two and three hand-made rice grains. Each grain is made from pure gold, weighs half a gram, and has the economic value of about 15 kilos of eatable dry rice. (How many grains would that be?) In total, the project exists of three grams of gold, enough for a beautiful gold ring, and 90 kilo’s of rice, which can provide a meal for 1800 people! In the video you’ll see a girl trying to eat it all… Everyone that visited ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’ was given a cup filled with delicious rice-pudding.
With her project ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’, Ana Cardim seeks attention for the idea of the difference in quantity, and levels of value, between the esthetic value of gold and the value given to the basic human need for food.
I am glad this project touches the subject of discrepancy in value and quantity from an aesthetic point of view. The rice-colored, ceramic bowls that contain the golden grains, are shaped like up-side-down rice heaps and make a good visual contrast with the actual heaps of rice. The chopsticks both separate and connect the two, underlining the visual link. The video shown on the wall, completes the display. The action of handing out cups of rice-pudding causes the viewer to connect to the exhibit. How can you resist thinking about the subject, when looking at the serene beauty of the whole set-up, whilst eating yummie pudding!
The launch of the ‘Aesthetic Nutrition’ project happened on the 6th of July, and was commissioned by Bypass, an art magazine that invites artists to write about their work. The second magazine is due to be released in October 2010 and will contain an extensive article by Ana Cardim.
‘Aesthetic Nutrition’ was held in Appleton Square, which is a multivalent space geared towards diverse artistic manifestations and towards the sharing of multidisciplinary experiences. It was the first time that they had work on display by a jewelry designer! » (Broes van Iterson)

SODAmore Summer 2010: Contemporary Art Jewellery Exhibition consists of an extra-ordinary collection of approximately 60 pieces made of various materials such as glass, metal, silicon, plexiglas, wood, acrylic, plastic and ceramic.

 The works of the internationally acclaimed artists Nevin Arığ, Jahyun Rita Baek, Ela Bauer, Ela Cindoruk, Sina Emrich, Doerthe Fuchs, Peter Hoogeboom, Ted Noten, Anat Sapir and Barbara Stutman present pieces that push the limits of imagination; ceramic teeth aligned on the wrist, vein-like necklaces placed upon the heart and intriguing pendants such as a fly and diamond frozen in acrylic, all gather in Istanbul for the first time.

 The exhibition presents an extensive selection of Contemporary Art Jewellery, which is an internationally rising trend offering art hung not on walls but on the skin.

Born in 1961, Nevin Arığ, graduated from Graphic Design, Fine Arts Academy in Istanbul. Between the years 1995-1998 she studied Contemporary Jewellery at Institut des Arts et Métiers in Brussels. She continued her studies in Silversmithing at IKA, Mechelen and for three years studied Fine Jewellery at Institut des Arts et Métiera. Arığ attended several international exhibitions and was chosen for the “Shoonhaven Silver Award” in 2009.

Jahyun Rita Baek is a Korean artist, based in London. She graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in the U.S.A. after which she did her MA at the Royal College of Art in the U.K. She has attended several exhibitions in cities such as New York, London, Hamburg and Florence and has received the Craftmanship and Design Award Gold prize in 2008.

After studying literature and then jewellery design in Jerusalem, Ela Bauer, went to the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 1995. Bauer took master classes at the European Ceramic Centre with Daniel Kruger and Den Bosch. Since 1993 she has participated in several exhibitions at countries such as Japan, Holland, U.S.A., Germany, Italy, Portugal. She also attended significant fairs such as SOFA New York and her works are included in the Museum of Art & Design MAD (New York), Pinakothek der Moderne, Danner Collection (München), Grassi Museum (Leipzig), Textile Museum (Tilburg) and Hiko Mizuno Collection (Tokyo).

Born in 1963, Ankara, Turkey, lives and works in Istanbul. Having received a Bachelor of Arts Industrial Design degree at Middle East Technical University, she later studied Jewellery and Metals at Parsons’ School of Design in New York. Ela Cindoruk is current partner of ‘elacindoruknazanpak’ jewelry studio and gallery in Istanbul, which she co-founded in 1993. Alongside her work as a jewellery maker, she has designed products and lecturing at Istanbul Bilgi University and Istanbul Technical University. As a jewellery maker and designer Ela Cindoruk, participates both national and international exhibitions and her work is showcased at galleries throughout the world. Exhibition highlights include “Turkish Delight” Exhibition in Pergamon Museum in 2008 Berlin, the V & V Gallery “orna-mental” Exhibition in 2007 Vienna, Wallpaper* GlobalEdit06 in Milan, participated fashion shows/exhibitions “Garde-robes” and “Gooood Food” both at the Saint-Etienne International Design Biennial 2006.

Sina Emrich was born in Frankfurt/Main in Germany in the year 1977. She graduated from the School for Goldsmiths and Watchmakers, Pforzheim in 2001. She continued her studies in Germany and the UK. Since 2008 she is working on the project “Schmucknomadin/Jewellery Nomad-weltlernen/worldlearning”. She has attended several international exhibitions and received awards such as the Honorable Mention at the 6th Chenongşu, International Craft Competition in 2009 and First Prize at the “Ambertrip Art Jewellery Contest” in 2008.

Dutch designer Peter Hoogeboom, graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 1992. Since 1989 he has had several exhibitions in European and Asian countries, also in Australia and New Zealand, in the U.S.A. and Canada. He has had publications in many magazines and books over the years. His work is included in private and public collections such as Museum of Ceramic Art Het Princessehof (Leeuwarden) and Museum of Modern Art (Amhem).

After graduating from the Rietveld Academy in 1990, Ted Noten began producing his first pieces of contemporary jewellery. From 2001 onwards he attended several solo and group exhibitions and has work in numerous private collections. Apart from his group exhibitions in Tokyo at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Collect Art Fair at London, he had solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum at Amsterdam and SOFA New York. His designs are included in collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Droog Design (Amsterdam), Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Roterdam) and Musée des Arts Decorative (Montreal). Ted Noten has received awards such as Harrie-Tillie and Françoise van den Bosch.

Anat Sapir was born in 1961. In 1988 she graduated from the Bezalel Art and Design Academy. In 2005 she specialized in glass bead making at the Wertzberger Art College.

Born in Montreal, Barbara Stutman studied Fine Arts and Art History at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Saidye Bronfman Center and Concordia University. Stutman’s jewellery has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia and has been written about in newspapers, professional journals, catalogues and books. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in Quebec City, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Koch Ring Collection in Switzerland and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City.

« L’exposition LINGAM met en scène 121 interprétations d’un symbole ancestral de fertilité : le lingam.
Représentation symbolique du phallus et du dieu Shiva, le Lingam représente la force créatrice à la base de l’existence de tout l’univers. Dans les religions hindoue et bouddhique, c’est par le biais du lingam que l’on honore quotidiennement le dieu Shiva, la représentation phallique n’y est nullement mise en relation avec le sexe.
Dans la culture occidentale, le phallus évoque la sexualité et le plaisir. Alors qu’il fut un temps où le Christianisme et la culture judéo chrétienne mettaient également en avant la sexualité comme acte créateur positif. Depuis la séparation du corps et de l’esprit, cet aspect en a été banni et d’une référence sacrée, la sexualité est devenue un mal nécessaire.
Avec l’exposition LINGAM, son commissaire, le plasticien Ruudt Peters (NL), désire rétablir cette signification initiale ainsi que sa dimension spirituelle.

Partant de sa fascination pour le lingam dont il a découvert l’existence il y a dix ans lors de voyages en Asie du Sud-est, il a eut envie de proposer à des artistes et designers contemporains de créer un objet symbolisant la fertilité, chaque créateur interprétant le sujet en se basant sur sa propre sensibilité et sa perception personnelle du thème.
121 créations ont ainsi vu le jour et sont présentées dans une scénographie où la signification originelle du lingam est soulignée par la présentation des objets contemporains en compagnie de leurs modèles originaux. »

Après deux étapes particulièrement remarquées à Stockholm et Utrecht, l’exposition Lingam sera présente cet été aux anciens abattoirs de Mons où la Galerie du WCC-BF accueillera les œuvres des 121 créateurs, issus de 24 pays à travers le monde, qui se sont prêtés au jeu de la réinterprétation de ce symbole fort, à la fois si spécifique et universel.

La Fondation d’entreprise Bernardaud organise une exposition autour d’une discipline artistique injustement trop peu connue en France : le bijou contemporain.
150 œuvres en céramique, fortes et exigeantes, prêtées par 18 artistes de diverses nationalités, interrogent les codes d’une expression artistique ancestrale pour les projeter dans des perspectives nouvelles. À la différence du bijou traditionnel, travail d’orfèvre rattaché à la famille des arts appliqués,le bijou contemporain, depuis les années 1970, devient un champ d’expérimentation aux frontières de l’art, du design et des métiers d’art.

« Cette année, la Fondation d’entreprise Bernardaud organise une exposition autour d’une discipline artistique injustement trop peu connue en France : le bijou contemporain. Présentées à Limoges du 16 juin au16 octobre 2010, cent cinquante oeuvres en céramique, fortes et exigeantes, prêtées par les artistes, interrogent les codes d’une expression artistique ancestrale pour les projeter dans des perspectives nouvelles.
À la différence du bijou traditionnel, travail d’orfèvre rattaché à la famille des arts appliqués, le bijou contemporain, depuis les années 1970, devient un champ d’expérimentation aux frontières de l’art, du design et des métiers d’art. D’origine française, suisse, allemande, finlandaise, hollandaise, suédoise, taïwanaise, dix-huit artistes nous proposent, à travers leur oeuvre, une vision renouvelée et personnelle. Si certaines sont conçues en référence à l’histoire des arts et aux nombreuses traditions attachées au bijou, d’autres, en réinventant leurs positions, leurs discours, leurs matériaux, s’en affranchissent totalement. Depuis toujours, le bijou joue un rôle d’indicateur social traduisant une appartenance à un groupe ou une volonté de différenciation, de contestation de l’ordre établi. Parure intime et singulière, le bijou est un objet qui parle du corps, des liens tissés entre les humains et des liens tissés entre l’humain et la nature. Comme cette exposition le démontre, et comme cela a été dans l’histoire du bijou, ceux-ci peuvent être conçus avec les matériaux les plus divers, grâce à tous les assemblages possibles, en fonction des techniques, des symboles et de la culture en vigueur à une époque donnée.
Depuis la réalisation de bagues sigillaires en faïence dans l’Égypte ancienne, ou d’ersatz en terre cuite dorée imitant l’or dans la Grèce et la Rome antique, la céramique a été abandonnée et oubliée pendant des siècles dans le domaine du bijou. C’est en 1773, en Angleterre, que son emploi resurgit lorsque Joshiah Wedgwood invente une pâte de grès fin constituée de différentes strates colorées qui imite parfaitement le jaspe, pour des bijoux aux motifs néoclassiques ou des sujets romantiques à la manière des camées.
Aujourd’hui, c’est au créateur hollandais Peter Hoogeboom que l’on doit d’avoir réconcilié de la façon la plus novatrice le grès ou la céramique avec le bijou, à partir de 1994. À cette réapparition remarquée, fait suite l’excellente initiative de l’European Keramiek Work Centre (EKWC), situé aux Pays-Bas, qui a proposé à de nombreux orfèvres contemporains des résidences leur permettant de travailler toutes les possibilités de mise en forme de la céramique dans le domaine du bijou.
Parmi les différents matériaux céramiques disponibles, c’est aujourd’hui la porcelaine qui a la faveur des artistes du bijou. Qu’elle soit utilisée par modelage ou coulage, seule ou en association avec le métal, le bois ou la pierre, la porcelaine peut changer d’apparence, de couleur et de surface. Lisse et pure, à la fois fragile et de grande résistance, elle épouse toutes les formes recherchées à condition d’en maîtriser les techniques et les contraintes, particulièrement celle liée à sa forte rétraction lors de la cuisson. Encore largement liée dans notre imaginaire aux arts de la table ou à la froideur technologique du matériel scientifique, la porcelaine peut devenir aujourd’hui un objet de désir, un déclencheur de sensations visuelles et physiques, en s’adaptant aux exigences conceptuelles et poétiques du bijou contemporain.
