Léa Mazy (FR) - Beneath the surface - 2016 Léa Mazy -  Beneath the surface -  2016 – Léa is a young French designer studying at Design Academy Eindhoven.  Léa ’s jewelry collection “Beneath the Surface” is the result of a research on materials around the notions of intimacy, preciousness, fragility, surprise, but most of all on the beauty lying underneath the surface. Combined, the individual story of each broches and rings creates a personal narration and landscape.

Mari Funaki was a unique and passionate advocate for contemporary jewellery in Australia, both through her own remarkable practice and her establishment and directorship of Gallery Funaki.
This Award aims to celebrate Mari’s legacy by rewarding the skills and vision of jewellers both here and overseas and by providing a platform for outstanding new work to be shown here in Australia. A panel of three judges will award prizes in both established and emerging categories, with total prize money valued at AUD$11,000.

During SCHMUCK 2016 : TALENTE 2016 awards – 27 Fevr. 2016

  TALENTE 2016
Award Ceremony, 27.02.2016 16:30
Fairground Messe Munich, Hall B1

Talente 2016 presents the work of 102 artists, designers and craftsmen from 26 countries in 12 different areas of production. This year Talente has also participants from Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Lithuania, South Africa and Argentinia. Talente will show innovative and very different works in glass, ceramics and jewellery as well as a very large selection of textiles. The works are inspired by considerations of material and re-use, the specific haptic and visual qualities of materials and the effect of their combination. The artists experiment with various surfaces and use materials in unusual ways. It is fascinating to observe how surfaces contrast and harmonize how perfection and decay are evoked.
As in the last years, an unusual high number of applications arrived for “Talente” from the field of jewellery. The young artists show a special interest in the techniques and ideas of the collage and the use of unusual materials like basketry, ceramic, plaster, textile and different stones. The works concentrate more on the surfaces themselves less on decorative embellishments. In many instances they emphasise the archaic and rough side. A pattern is also created by the materials themselves.

« I use tactile material to create jewellery that evokes a spectrum of memories and address inner landscapes in my mind. I fold, twist and roll paper using my hands, at times unconsciously. The uneven layers of texture emerge from light and shadow, conveying emotions of permanence to impermanence that reflect the ephemeral breath of nature with its fragility. » Momoko Kumai (Japan)

« Following a fascination, personal impressions and emotions, and translate them into tangible forms. For me it is important not to merely copy already existing forms, but instead to portray my own perceptions as they are through my eyes.
While working with textiles I create new possibilities within my working process. Qualities like elasticity and translucence begin to emerge and play an important role in my work. Voluptuous shapes come to life through colour and filling, whose soft curves remind me of cherry-blossoms. The material hold an innumerable number of small pearls tightly together like a warm embrace. The forms and the sensibility of the material evoke emotions in the viewer and give the pieces sensuality and a sense of life. In the same way that one would handle a cherryblossom, the pieces should be handled delicately as the fragile objects they are« ( Thanh-Truc Nguyen (Germany))
