 A garnish can be anything from an adornment that adds or enhances the body (human or animal) to a functional or nonfunctional object that decorates and spices up a room. This exhibition will ask viewers and participants to examine the idea of a garnish made by 2 different subsets of makers who have come together to create an embellishment that satisfies both.

Statement from the organizers:
“A modern metalsmith/metal artist can be found working in traditional metals as well as in nontraditional materials. The designs can range from the classic to the extravagant, and the techniques can either be centuries old or decidedly current. The wide range of expression preferences, design options, materials, and processes has lead within our field to unfavorable misconceptions, misunderstandings and in some cases even outright disdain between artists. Each side considers itself superior to the other, seemingly not appreciating the clear advantages, benefits, and experiences each faction brings to the table. Quoting from Damian Skinner’s 2013 SNAG keynote lecture in Toronto:
“We are all family. Sometimes, family members don’t speak with each other, but we still are one big family. Let’s recognize this fact.”
Can our field overcome family division and send a much-needed signal to the metals + jewelry community? We appreciate and respect our historical past and acknowledge that current materials have a rightful place in jewelry/object making. Velvet da Vinci is proud to present 6, an exhibition of jewelry and sculptural objects by six young voices in the field. Featured artists include Nikki Couppee, Hunter Creel, Zachery Lechtenberg, Andrew Kuebeck, Aric Verrastro, and Vincent Pontillo-Verrastro. Working with a range of processes and techniques, each artist brings a fresh perspective to their craft and material lineage. The show will run from August 1-15, 2015. An opening reception with the artists will take place on August 1st, from 6-8 pm.

Vincent Pontillo-Verrastro’s current presents a dialogue emphasizing the primacy of touch in experiencing jewelry, focusing on the tactile and functional properties of the brush.

Aric Verrastro,   Drifting – brooch
Aric Verrastro creates souvenirs in the form of jewelry, intended to capture the essence of noteworthy places and events from the past and present of the artist’s personal history. Verrastro earned undergraduate degrees in Metals/Jewelry and Studio Art from SUNY Buffalo State College. He recently earned an MFA in Metalsmithing/Jewelry at Indiana University (Bloomington, IN), where he currently serves as Associate Instructor in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design

Nikki Couppee Necklace: Neogem, 2015 Plexiglass, brass, fine silver, sterling silver, found objects
Nikki Couppee’s recent work investigates the performative social functions of jewelry, utilizing Plexiglass, brass, and found objects in place of precious gems and metals. Working with everyday materials she intuitively creates her own versions of gemstones, hand cast and faceted in luminescent plastics. Couppee received an M.F.A. in Jewelry/ Metals from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio (2011) and a B.F.A. from the University of Georgia, Athens Georgia in Jewlery/Metals (2007).

Andrew Kuebeck – « second place » brooch – Sterling Silver, Fine Silver, Enamel, Toner Decal, Steel; Fabricated, Cast, Enameled, Fused
 Andrew Kuebeck , recipient of the 2012 SNAG Emerging Artist award, works in a variety of formats ranging from functional jewelry to sculptural objects and vessels. Inspired by Beefcake photography of the 1960’s and 70’s, his recent felt pieces explore the incorporation of photographic images into textiles, jewelry, and objects.

Society of North American Goldsmiths :  Congratulations to Vincent Pontillo-Verrastro, our 2014 Educational Endowment Scholarship Recipient!
Vincent received a 2014 Educational Endowment Scholarship from SNAG and is a MFA candidate in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design at Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN.
Vincent was recently interviewed by PBS WTIU about wearable art.
Work by Vincent will be included in a new exhibition at M Contemporary in Sydney, Australia. Intimately Connected runs September 16-October 26. ​ RAC (Racine Arts Council Board) is proud to present its 2nd Annual Juried Brooch Show.  This years awards juror is Yevgeniya Kaganovich. Kaganovich is a Belarus born, Milwaukee, Wisconsin based artist, whose hybrid practice encompasses Jewelry and Metalsmithing, sculpture and installation.  Yevgeniya has received a Masters of Fine Arts form the State University of New York at New Paltz and a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Metal/Jewelry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Her work has received a number of awards and has been published widely.  Currently Yevgeniya is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Art and Design at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee heading a thriving Jewelry and Metalsmithing Area with a graduate and undergraduate program.

« Within my work I am interested in exploring the themes of; the souvenir, ornamentation, memory, longing, and nostalgia associated with the collection of personal objects. I am interested in how ordinary everyday objects transcend the mundane through the association of memory thus becoming personal and precious. Overall my work draws reference to objects that I’ve collected, objects that were hand made or mass produced but due to their limited use for special occasions, they became precious and personal with meaning. By employing the use of new technologies and their materials, my work also explores the ideas of what it means to be made by hand in contrast to mass production and the future of mass customization. »

« « I will never look like that. » Usually a phrase which is heard, but most commonly said responding to a billboard.
I am attracted to the role this « billboard » plays in my life. Utilizing metalsmithing techniques and traditional jewelry form, I socially and conventionally reinterpret commercialism through adornment. Rendering each piece non-functional, I seek to express a personal commentary of the marketeers’ opportunistic approach to unattainable idealism through ornament. »

« The physicality of steel is cold and rigid. It is fascinating to turn this man-made material into something warm and beautiful. My focus is in this transition from constraint to plasticity. I construct complex forms from multiple elements. My work represents the seamless relationship between order and chaos. To me, perfection is an illusion. The more I deform it, the more it can represent my definition/sense of reality. Jewelry is a large subject in a small object; what animates me is the sentiment of the beautiful. »

« My goal is associating the idea of intimacy in jewelry objects to the body while the cord functions as a vehicle which conveys metaphorical meaning of connection. When the piece is on the body, the cord seems to penetrate or bind the wearer. I feel that it expresses the physical and conceptual connection between piece and wearer. It is also very meaningful in promoting the intimacy between wearer and the work itself. »
