Exploring, experimenting, expressing.
Feeling, transforming, communicating.
Embracing.
The human body.
The simple objects.
The subconscious.
The spur of the moment.
Different but together for beautiful and ugly, for good or for bad..

« This collection has been created as a need to express my experience of being a new parent. When I observed all internal and external changes of the pregnant body, I embraced all the emotional ups and downs that we both had. I kept the storm of feelings created the moment we saw our baby and hold it in our arms and finally I stood amazed at the magnificent process of breast feeding. All these became the fragments of time at my beginning on the way to parenting.

« The human body is a space. The human body takes up space. The human body is the separator of an inside and an outside space.
How do these spaces interact with each other? Are they interconnected or out of balance? How do human beings deal with the condition of being the mediator?
Maybe there is no distinct answer but the exploration of these questions through the notion of materiality might be an answer in itself. »

EXPO ‘New Territories’ – Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum, Athens (GR) – 3 Fevr.–15 Mai 2016

at Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum.

50 GREEK STUDIO JEWELERS UNVEIL THEIR RECENT WORK DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED IN GREECE

We are pleased to introduce the new temporary exhibition: « New Territories » . The exhibition will be launched on 3rd February at the Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum and will show case the recent work of 50 Greek studio jewelry artists currently working in Greece

opening on 3rd February. 19h-22h

New Territories - Athens

The new exhibition at the Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum, “New territories”, brings together 50 established and emerging Greek studio jewelry artists presenting unique works show cased for the first time.
Handcrafted in the workshops of the artists, these jewelry objects are the antithesis of commercial high end, fine or jewelry of mass production. These works display a progression from traditional Greek metalsmithing to the use of new techniques and types, straying from the two-dimensional form and materials of the traditional object. They are marked by their direct and close connection to socio-political developments, the world of fashion and international trends in studio jewelry. The exhibition aims to showcase the talent as well as to highlight them as part of a vibrant current in contemporary visual art.
The exhibition illustrates the designers’ boundless imagination as well as the dynamism of a new “industry” associated to international studio jewelry production. New trends in crafts have grown to reply to global competition reflecting current events. Still, history and cultural traditions are very much embedded in the Greek artists’ agenda and the artists have been inspired from ancient Greek mythological heroes to Byzantine religious art and Greek regional costumes from the 17th and 18th centuries. However, evoking a moment in time is just what the artists attempt to show in this exhibition. It is here were we meet some troubled citizens influenced by the current economic unrest exploring a visual representation of catastrophe and then hope. Others seek a more romantic side of contemporary making and address environmental issues, using driftwood and dried flowers. Many of the artists have become involved in teaching classes to mentor the young ones in their own secrets. These experienced artists share with us works that are conceptual but of the highest technical craftsmanship. In the hands of the craftsmen we find that wearable jewelry can become free standing objects and vice versa, leaving the viewer to experience and imagine form and function in three dimensions.
Bridging geographical barriers we find that many of the participants have participated in shows in European countries mainly Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands.  Their participation in art fairs and major jewelry shows has brought them experience with current trends and a new know how. But there is still some way until a higher recognition from museum curators and private collectors. After 22 years of presenting innovative temporary exhibitions with decorative arts and promoting studio jewelry in Greece, the ILJM once again attempts to take the initiative to showcase the work of contemporary artists active in Greece and abroad.  For this we have enriched our winter program with lectures by distinguished international guests from museums and galleries, art historians and collectors who will meet with the artists and give lectures to the public. Also in the next few months artists will organize events to better demonstrate their work to experts and the public through lectures, workshops, performances and highlight the educational role of the exhibition.

EXPO ‘Tamata’ – Gallery el.Marneri, Athens (GR) – 5 dec. 2014 – 5 Dec. 2015

Spells and incantations, amulets and fetishes, ex-votos and tamata – words, gestures, objects that tell of a need as old as the human race itself: to thwart evil and protect life, a need that is every bit as strong today as it was for our ancestors since time immemorial.

OPENING: Friday 5 December 2014, 18:00

Gal Eleni Marneri

El.Marneri Gallery invites artists to participate in building a collection of jewelry and art objects that revisits the age-old notion of the protective charm. One-of-a-kind or limited edition objects tap the ancient tradition of apotropaic symbols; they revise it, reinvent it, comment on it. The collection – that is to be permanent and exclusive to the Gallery – will constitute a work in progress that is to evolve through the addition of both participating artists and new acquisitions. The project is to be completed in a year’s time and will be launched at a special event held at the Gallery this coming Christmas.

EXPO ‘From Darkness to light’ – El.Marneri Galerie, Athens (Greece) – 24 Mai-29 Sept 2012

« From Darkness to Light »

The deeply symbolic work of the philhellene artist Stoian Donev, “Light and Darkness” is presented for the first time at Eleni Marneri galerie . The artist brilliantly utilizes the two contradictory meanings with the purpose to signify that with poetry, “light can dominate darkness”. Prompted by Donev’s work, 54 talented greek and international philhellene artists in the area of contemporary jewellery, painting and design get inspired and express their personal perception of “light conquering darkness”.

l’Expo est passée, mais j’aime cette idée (étant moi-même profondément méditerranéenne…) de la Méditerranée comme lien entre des créateurs et des créations …..

« The main topic of the event is the Mediterranean as the “sea between lands, border and connection sea between these lands”.
The Mediterranean is the line where north-west and south-east of the world meet and a crucial area for the future of humankind.
This point of contact may become, as the writer Samuel Huntington says, “the starting point for dialogue between civilisations”, where common features are mixed with differences and the respect for “diversity” is based on understanding and knowing other people’s nature.
Each community should learn from the others and teach to them: it is possible to break the “game” aiming at creating monolithic cultures only through these connections.
This was probably not understood in the past, but now a defined direction should be outlined and followed to achieve this objective.
Therefore, the “voice” of the Mediterranean is not coming from the past, but from the future, according to that balance between land and sea, belonging and freedom, where a living model does not demonize our need for establishing links or our need for freedom.
If it is true that hope is in the future, then assigning this message to an extremely contemporary and innovative art expression can help us achieving this objective.
This is the reason why Contemporary Jewellery was selected, as this is a sector of advanced research and experimentation halfway between design and tradition, as an expressive language to disseminate this message.

Through Contemporary Jewellery research, it is possible to highlight and give value to the cultural diversities characterising all communities living around the shores of this Sea.
This project has several purposes: promote the cultural heritage that has always characterised the Municipality of Nocciano, i.e. its Medieval Castle and Picture Gallery beyond the regional and national borders.
At the same time, this event includes the possibility to create a tourist-cultural movement between the Mediterranean Village and Nocciano, which are a few km far from each other.  »

« My work is inspired by old-fashioned activities such as sewing and embroidering. I admire how children transform ordinary materials into valuable assets and try to pay tribute to their game. I use natural materials – silk, wool, cotton, semiprecious stones. I produce small quantities because I work on my own. Every piece is unique and tells a story: of a couple meeting, a flower garland, and happy home. I search for vintage materials – buttons, textiles, stones. I want my jewellery to be funny but also detail orientated. I often use old garments, buttons and stones just to show that every material can carry a memory and still have a second life. » (Loukia Richards) (on CraftsCouncil page)
