Nomen Nescio

MFA GRADUATION SHOW - by  Carla Movia

Opening 2 december 18:00-21:00

& 3 December 17:00-20:00

Nomen Nescio – Carla Movia

Nomen Nescio, from latin nomen-name and nescio-I don’t know, is an installation of 300 brooches, all made out of the same material – discarded tin cans.
It is the nameless and forgotten crowd that the jewellery artist Carla Movia addresses with her work, a reflection on stereotypes and prejudice.
100 trashed tin cans transformed into jewellery state that redemption is a possibility.
They are meant as a symbol of hope, the invisible and the rejected placed on the body and worn with pride to be noticed.
In this spirit, one series of brooches supports Oxfam Italia’s campaign Stand as One.
A percentage of the sales will be donated to give help and protection to the millions of people forced to flee conflict, disaster and poverty.

EXPO ‘WYSIWYG – Chumeng Weng’ – Spazio Culturale MENTANA, Firenze (IT) – 26 Nov. 2016

WYSIWYG – Chumeng Weng

MFA GRADUATION SHOW

Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School Florence

26 November 2016 -  Opening: 18:00

WYSIWYG - Chumeng Weng

Alchimia presents WYSIWYG, solo exhibition of graduate student Chumeng Weng.
The exhibition consists of a series of 19 jewellery pieces, a humorous reflection on what determines our psychological discomforts. On Nov 26th 2016, you are invited to the representation of her fears based on a two-year self discovery journey.
WYSIWYG will take you behind the dark scenes of Chumeng Weng’s imagination, where everything is tied together through one specific shape to have her worst nightmares come true.
Weng’s work incorporates traditional metal forming techniques with elements that are not usually associated with jewellery, thus creating a sense of disturbance, much like how our inner struggle works against common perception. As she sharpens, scores, snaps the pieces on to the edge of a shirt with an aggressive gesture, they turn into a theatrical symbol rather than a physical threat. Weng becomes powerful through the process of creation, taking control of her growth once again.

« Chumeng Weng in her new collection moved from a more personal and biographical representation of fear to a broader and rather humoristic reflection on what determines our psychological discomforts.  Motion and sarcasm are paramount tools for her, and the question she seems to pose here might be how to neutralize fear’s paralyzing power. » (Alchimia blog)

Chumeng Weng 2016Chumeng Weng

Chumeng Weng lived and studied in Shenyang, China for 18 years before studying fine art in Canada. Still looking for a better self, she spent one year focusing on technical jewellery making. This led her to Alchimia, where not only her perception of jewellery has been altered greatly, but also her philosophy towards ways of living has been reinterpreted.

EXPO ‘Weapons of Perfection’ – Chiasso Perduto, Firenze (IT) – 2-4 Dec. 2016

OPENING EXHIBITION: 2 dicembre ore 17.00

Lilian Mattuschka‎ Weapons of Perfection

« The unconscious is sitting on my shoulders, whispering, calling for revolution. The giant grandpa wants to teach me how to move, how to smile, how to behave. I shave my hair.

Weapons of Perfection is the result of a two-year research revolving around issues on social behavior and norms that define and direct human interactions.
This body of work is presented as an installation created to encourage a dialogue between body and objects, photography and video. The work is divided in chapters, each representing a specific type of instruction, intended to shape both our posture and our mind.
Weapons of Perfection explores the alphabet of forms we live every day. Here the apple is a weapon of knowledge; the pacifier is an artifice of compensation; the smile is a trick of expression; the handle is a temptation of contact; the posture is an imposition of openness; the chain is a distorted bond.
The thoroughly refined artifacts invite touch, but resist use when perceived as weapons.
Weapons of Perfection offers an insight into the invisible social constrictions and boundaries with which we can be confronted. »

Opening: 17:00 – 21:00 at  « It’s yoga Firenze » (Light Lite)
Just as a reminder : The Treasure Hunt/Route will end at 7:30pm given that the shops close at that time. After that, we will meet at the gathering place It’ Yoga (Lightlite) until 9pm !! I hope to see you all at 5:00pm!

INVISIBLE

« INVISIBLE is a series of 213 jewelry pieces created to populate surfaces on the body and beyond.
INVISIBLE is jewelry meant to draw attention, to stop a distracted glance, and be an encounter with the unsuspected.
INVISIBLE talks about a process and a transformation from the ordinary to the extraordinary. It talks about the metamorphosis of organic substances, and focuses on the microorganisms that provoke this metamorphosis by transforming them into jewelry.
Creating “mold” to be worn as jewelry might be felt as a provocation, a provocation to feel and to see what is normally disdained. It is an invitation to accept a natural process of life in its inherent beauty, an invitation to break the boundaries of traditional jewelry, while exploring new possibilities of wearability and reinterpretation.
The exhibition itself is again an invitation to stroll around and explore particular spaces.
It has its starting and ending point in “It’s Yoga” (Light Lite), Via dei Serragli, 24r, 50124 at 5p.m with an installation explaining the project. The exhibition itself evolves as treasure hunt where the visitors will follow a map with a route to find jewelry pieces spread in the area of the city.
This was possible thanks to the collaboration of I Visionari, Coexist, Quelle tre, Wave Parrucchieri, Luca and Bjork. »

Lumy Nouguez – INVISIBLELumy Nouguez – INVISIBLE

Born in 1986 in Bogotá- Colombia, Lumy Nouguez lived and studied in Cúcuta until high school. Later she moved to Medellin for 10 years completing an architecture degree and working as landscape and graphic designer for several years. WONDER/WANDER

with jewellery by An Na Okamoto Gayton Dana AL-Nafisi Diana PanteaLena Kostjuchenko  – Sehnaz Erdal

On Friday 17 June at 6pm in Florence, Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School is proud to present the opening of the graduation exhibition of five 3rd year BFA students. “Wonder/Wander” will showcase a collection of jewellery reflecting the diversity of ideas of its makers, developed over a year of research into the limits and possibilities of materials.

To wonder is to admire and marvel, to feel doubt and confusion. To wander is to get lost, to drift aimlessly and circle around an idea. These two words encapsulate the various paths taken by the five students to reach the conclusion of their final collection. This exhibition is an invitation to explore and question your notion of what jewellery is, and to wander through the physical and conceptual spaces in which it was created.

Anna Okamoto Gayton (Japan/Australia) grapples with her cultural identity through the use of languages, adopted and native.
Dana AL-Nafisi (Kuwait) is inspired by fossils and how they contain stories of the past, revealing the evolution of life through the ages.
Diana Pantea (Romania) plays with reality and transforms it into the imaginary.
Lena Kosztyucsenko (Russia/Hungary) explores movement and the connection between kinetic and static.
Sehnaz Erdal (Sweden/Turkey) creates a physical metaphor for inner improvement.

Alchimia is happy to present BODIES AND MINDS, a group exhibition opening on June 17 at 6.30pm, featuring the work of its recent MFA graduates, choreographed as a conversation between contemporary jewellery and the sculptures and fascinating spaces of the historical Galleria Romanelli.
BODIES AND MINDS wants to incite a reflection on the hybrid nature of the contemporary artistic jewel, on the relationship between the body and the mind, on the constraints determined by physical prerequisites vis-à-vis conceptual investigations, between the weight of tradition and the fragility of innovation.

In 1829 the sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini transforms an abandoned fourteenth century church in a studio where his student Pasquale Romanelli, followed by five generations of male heirs, develops the Romanelli Gallery. Hundred-eighty-seven years later six female jewellery artists take over the space and its collection challenging disciplinary and gender hierarchies. BODIES AND MINDS offers unexpected connections and ironic cultural appropriations, in a path that relates illustrious examples of copies and originals from the history of Italian sculpture to the experimental relational dimension of contemporary jewellery.

A large crowd of rings asks us to reflect on the manufacturing of our cultural identities, both as individuals and as members of larger communities, in « Being and Belonging » by Daria Borovkova.
Another critical mass of circular shapes, now without a specific identity, characterizes « In Conflict. Moments of Strike » by Sana Khalil, a tribute or cynical celebration to the impossibility of the artist to perform direct political agency over the world.
While such ambitions can only strengthen our sense of inadequacy, « 1: 20,000″ by Giulia Savino invites us to remain suspended, to let ourselves be carried away by those states of temporary sense of satisfaction that keep us above the world through the appropriation of real and imaginary cities.
On a more personal level, « Madeleine » by Lavinia Rossetti evokes the ephemeral existence of our memories, finding ways to give form to the essence of significant moments.
A similar sense of transience characterizes « Trascendieron » by María Ignacia Walker in a tribute to our daily losses, a possible humorous comment to the Western impulse to preserve and collect.
Finally, and gently, « True Lies. A Collection of Oxymoron » by Federica Sala confronts us with existential questions: what is the true nature of our experience or how do we define reality, whispering, perhaps, what contemporary jewelry wants .
