Unbearable Lightness

a solo show by Federica Sala

Alchimia is proud to say that “Unbearable Lightnesses” by recent graduate Federica Sala will be on view during the Schmuck Jewellery Week 2016, an exhibition featuring her Alchimia MFA collection “True Lies. A collection of Oxymorons”, together with new pieces realized for the occasion

 Opening 26.02 from 18:00 to 22:00

Unbearable Lightnesses

Imagine to wake up and to see everything different than what you knew. The appearance of the surroundings is exactly the same, but no more the feeling of it. Everything becomes suddenly worthless but meaningful, raising an awareness of a reality fragile and heavy at the same time. There’s a new and indefinable tension between certain and uncertain. It’s a thrill that brings you on the brink of a precipice over nothing and everything. Take your time to stay suspended in this pure and perfect balance. Keep as long as possible this vertigo feeling with you to magnify your experience of life. Welcome to the world of the Unbearable Lightnesses.

There’s a reality to discover, in which everything is possible and looks exactly the opposite of what we know. Our superficial perception is building a world of illusions in which appearance has become the only truth. I want to raise doubts, creating pieces that defy the laws of Reality and seem to belong to another possible world. All the uncertainties are turned into delicate jewellery pieces that once on the body draw the wearer’s attention, sharing their fragility with the reality we’re living. My pieces want to make people change their perspective, generating a much more gentle and sensitive perception of themselves and of the surroundings as a consequence. True Lies. A Collection of Oxymorons wants to question our perception of reality, inspired by Plato’s thoughts on how “reality is just a defective projection of our limited way of perceiving”*. Strong in look but extremely fragile in essence, the jewellery pieces encourage us to reflect about the inextricable co-dependency of opposites, and of how our existence might be determined by the limits we set for ourselves. Glass and stone become one entity growing from each other via a new and experimental technique developed by the artist in years of research on the island of Murano, world-famous for its artisanal glass production.
True Lies are impossible structures that point us towards the fragility of the reality we know, by sharing with us just one of the possible variations of it.
Federica Sala is one of the significant figures of a rising generation of Italian jewellery artists. Her practice is based on a continuous experimentation on the properties and qualities of materials, with a particular interest in glass and organic forms, grounded in a strong theoretical research. With this new collection Federica Sala introduced a unique approach in combining different materials such as metal, glass and gemstones. One of its pieces was nominated for the prestigious Stanislav Libenský Award. (Alchimia blog)

Federica Sala (b. 1986 Italy, lives and works in Milan) holds an MFA in Contemporary Jewellery and Body Ornament from Alchimia in Florence (2015) tutored by the Mexican jewellery artist Jorge Manilla, and a MA in Fashion Design from the Politecnico in Milan (2011) tutored by the Italian anthropologist Eleonora Fiorani and the Italian artist Giorgio Vigna. While studying in Alchimia she was mentored by International artists as Peter Bauhuis and Ruudt Peters. Her work is deeply based on a scientific approach to materials that she manipulates to create new delicate jewellery sculptures that due to their fragility capture all the attention and sensibility of the wearer.  From 2010 to 2012 she has been the assistant of Giorgio Vigna with whom she kept on studying glass and its properties, travelling to Murano to learn new techniques.  Her recent Master Project “True Lies. A collection of Oxymorons” has been nominated for the Stanislav Libensky Award 2015 with an exhibition at the Glass Museum in Prague.

Jewellery artists from 22 countries all over the world come together in a memorial exhibition for Manfred Bischoff who passed away a year ago. At some point or other, they have all been taught by Manfred at Alchimia, contemporary jewellery school in Florence, and have each submitted one piece to the exhibition that honours a great teacher.
German born Manfred Bischoff lived in Tuscany in a house that was in itself a piece of exquisite art. Its magical interior made a natural and perfect framework for his work that has been called by many names: sensual, poetic, lyrical, great, intimate, strong, beautiful, satirical and always surprising. He worked in 22K gold, as pure as he could manage and still maintain a rigidity in the metal that allowed him to execute his ideas in delicate and well crafted pieces, often accompanied with subtle pink coral and drawings.
His dedication to the language of jewellery and his visions were most likely one of the reasons that the Alchimia school managed to become known and respected internationally in a relatively short time span.

The teacher
« As a student at Alchimia, you never really met Manfred until the third year. He was a giant figure who arrived to the narrow street in Florence on Tuesdays. He spent time with the older students, watched the world from behind his sunglasses when he leaned onto the wall at coffee breaks, and then he vanished again.
It was not until you were there yourself – in your final year – that you met the myth and began to appreciate his capacity to engage in your work and to show you how you might develop it. He was a surprisingly selfless teacher, and during critiques in the small classroom he managed to create a space for you and him to engage in a dialogue about your work that was stripped of second agendas and based solely on how he could help you to become a better artist.
It is only later, you come to understand how exceptionally truthful and helpful he tried to be in order to make you grow as a person and as an artist. »

1 : 20.000. A solo show by Giulia Savino

Alchimia is pleased to present 1 : 20.000, a solo-show by Italian jewelry artist Giulia Savino. This marks the third in a series of solo exhibitions realized by the graduating students of Alchimia’s MFA program 2014/2015, each taking place in a different European city.

Where do we belong to? Can we say that a city belongs to us? If so, then we may have it, like an object, taking it with us wherever we go. We cross the world feeling our identity is in a constant change.
We often observe cities from above, at the height of the clouds, where everything turns into a grid of lines and geometric shapes, looking small and neat, making us believe that we can grab it all and hold it in one hand.
1: 20000 is the manifestation of that instant, that alluring moment in which something enormous is in our hands and we immerse ourselves in the temporary beauty of being in a place we think we own.
1: 20000 is a compendium of maps, a collection of cities in the form of jewels. Just like the map is not the territory but one of the many possible representations of space, each jewel is a personal interpretation of a city that adopts a shape in direct interaction with the body.
1: 20000 is a research on our own identity, complex as mazes of streets, in constant movement as travelers, precious and delicate as jewels.Giulia Savino

A simple fact of life that María Ignacia Walker obsesses over: The shedding of hair.
The obsession – losing them, collecting them, ordering them, measuring them and archiving them. The desire – to preserve these losses – It gives rise to “transcendieron”.
The discourse is not about beauty and it is not about sensuality, not even about cultural symbols that hair carries.
How much hair do you lose constantly, everyday?
How many pieces grow out of your body and die every moment?
“The transcendents” are a homage to the moments when you lose your hair.
Captured and immortalized in the fragility of the porcelain, they give perpetuity and freeze all their expressions in the moment of their detachment from the body.
With a threading method, the artist uses horsehair as connectors. They show the lightness, energy and freedom, while demonstrating the real, natural movement of the hair.
Together with the act of keeping and protecting the hair in a porcelain form, they are given another life that keeps them present through their absence.

Un simple hecho cotidiano que obsesiona a María Ignacia Walker: El desprendimiento del cabello.
Perderlos, recopilarlos, ordenarlos, medirlos y archivarlos.
- Text: Josefina Monsalve

A loop is a structure, series, or process, the end of which is connected to the beginning. This show involves six loops of thought working through fears, confusion, questions and intrigue. The show LOOPS is an opportunity to communicate these common circles of thought, and to organize them into cohesive, communicable bodies of work.
