CLASSIC
DESIGN?
The simplicity of reproduction of subsequent stylistic incarnations grows parallel with introducing of subsequent versions of 3D modelling software and rapid prototyping technologies.
ART?
Today, the race of the artistic radicalisms ends inevitably as a Youtube “freak of the week”.
HANDMADE?
The economic pressure of efficiency forced the traditional craftsmanship into the sphere of anthropological phenomena.
but, it is not true that “everything has already happened”. Everything has happened many times and nevertheless the historical retrospection and the necessity of original reinterpretation of the classic canons of the art of goldsmithing still appear inspiring. Let’s try again then to discover the timeless.

mineralART

mineralART – From regional design contest to international prize for innovative gemstone design

The mineralART competition – organised by the Kreissparkasse bank in Idar-Oberstein since 1995 – has undergone dynamic development over the last decade: What began as more of a mineralogy-oriented event for those working with minerals found in the Idar-Oberstein region has since turned into a celebrated and internationally-followed contest for innovative gemstone design.
The requirement to only use minerals found in the region was lifted in two steps taken in 2006 and 2012 and the focus of the contest turned toward innovative, artistic design.
The contest is not limited to jewellery pieces. Sculptures, objets d’art etc. may also be submitted.
The awards ceremony has also found an interesting platform since 2006 at the Inhorgenta Munich trade fair

“between layers – worlds within agate”

Mineral Art „between layers – Innenwelten des Achats“ Contest Deadline: 15.1.2014:

Theme of the competition
The focus of the competition is on producing an innovative piece of jewellery or an object from, or in connection with, an agate. For the purposes of the competition, a cut agate, revealing its inner world
through concentric or irregular strata can as well provide inspiration as an agate with two or more horizontallayers, which would traditionally have been used to create cameos or intaglios.

In using banded agate, care must be taken that the object or piece of jewellery steps away from classical gem-cutting tradition and demonstrates a unique, innovative approach to this traditional stone. There are
no restrictions with regards to the origin or variety of agate. The competition  is organised by the German Gemstone Museum in Idar-Oberstein.

Participants
The competition is particularly aimed at jewellery and gemstone designers, apprentices and school, college, university and academy students from Germany and abroad.

Submission deadline
Important:
registration is available online only at: www.mineralart.de
After sending the online form the participant will receive an email containing an automatically generated code allocated per individual piece to be submitted.
Pieces must be sent by 15th January 2014 along with this confirmation of registration and clearly marked with the reference “mineralART”,
to the following address:

Deutsches Edelsteinmuseum
“mineralART” + sender’s name
Hauptstrasse 118,
D-55743 Idar-Oberstein
Germany

All pieces must be received by 15th January 2014

Jury members:
Jiro Kamata (JP), Helena Lehtinen (FIN), Estela Saez Vilanova (E), Gerhard Schmidt (D) und Dr. Marjan Unger (NL)

Prize-giving
The prize-giving will take place on Thursday 13th March as part of a celebratory event inside the State Collection of Antiques in Munich. The competition winners and other outstanding pieces will be displayed here during SCHMUCK 2014 and until 11th May 2014 during museum opening hours. This will be followed by a further exhibition in the German Gemstone Museum in Idar-Oberstein until October 2014.

Names of the winners we will know on the vernissage, 18th of May 2013  in the Gallery of Art in Legnica, Poland.

Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER - may-june 2013

IDEA:

It is better not to turn on the television today. We are being attacked by images of economic crises, stock market crashes, falling ratings, budget deficits, cost cutting programs and increasing unemployment from everywhere. As a reaction to the overwhelming impression of a lack of opportunities there are emerging movements such as « Occupy … », helplessly protesting against banksters, corporations and governments. Doesn’t speaking in such circumstances about jewellery – the subject invariably associated with the demonstration of wealth and selfish hedonism – seem socially unacceptable and even ethically suspect? After all, the burning  of ATMs and the broken glass of jeweller’s shops have become part of the frustration of all the Indignados.
But there is also another aspect of the design and use of jewellery – which – like no other product of the imagination – can be an effective message, manifesting the point of view of the user – a voice of protest, being anti-or pro-, attitudes of rebellion, rebellion and guerrilla warfare. Can a standard set of slogans written out on banners, T-shirts and slap tags be complemented with another more sophisticated message? Are jewellery designers able to demonstrate their own opinion and join the discussion concerning non-aesthetic issues? Is the tradition of exclusive gold jewellery going to be our irreversible remorse? And will the chorus « Diamonds are a girl’s best friend » always sound  as infantile as the recent testimony before the European Court of Justice in The Hague of the famous model Naomi Campbell, who at one time accepted an embarrassing gift from the dictator of Liberia, tried for war crimes, so evocatively reconstructed in the movie « Blood Diamond » with Leo DiCaprio as a ruthless mercenary?

About festival

For more than thirty years, the Gallery of Art in Legnica has specialised in promoting contemporary jewellery and artistic objects made mainly of silver. We have been organising individual and group exhibitions of Polish and international artists, publishing exhibition catalogues, organising conferences and symposia, as well as fashion and jewellery shows, competitions and fairs. The most important event we organize is Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER. Every year we present individual and collective exhibitions as part of the festival, including:
LEGNICA INTERNATIONAL JEWELLERY COMPETITION The competition dates back to 1979 and every year it has a different topic. The competition is open and addressed to all artists, whose task is to present their work on a given topic – every year a different one – including an original artistic idea and representing a high level of artistry and technical skills. What is favoured is the concept, value and meaning of an artistic expression. Works entered for the competition are assessed by an international jury, on which over fifty outstanding goldsmithing artists and theoreticians have sat so far. What is characteristic of the competition is the fact that the winners of the first three prizes receive – according to a long-standing tradition – silver pellets and cash prizes.
