About festival

For more than thirty years, the Gallery of Art in Legnica has specialised in promoting contemporary jewellery and artistic objects made mainly of silver. We have been organising individual and group exhibitions of Polish and international artists, publishing exhibition catalogues, organising conferences and symposia, as well as fashion and jewellery shows, competitions and fairs. The most important event we organize is Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER. Every year we present individual and collective exhibitions as part of the festival, including:

LEGNICA INTERNATIONAL JEWELLERY COMPETITION The competition dates back to 1979 and every year it has a different topic. The competition is open and addressed to all artists, whose task is to present their work on a given topic – every year a different one – including an original artistic idea and representing a high level of artistry and technical skills. What is favoured is the concept, value and meaning of an artistic expression. Works entered for the competition are assessed by an international jury, on which over fifty outstanding goldsmithing artists and theoreticians have sat so far. What is characteristic of the competition is the fact that the winners of the first three prizes receive – according to a long-standing tradition – silver pellets and cash prizes.

The submitted works are qualified by an international jury. Over the years, we have invited a number of distinguished artists to seat on the jury, including: G. Babetto, G. Bakker, O. Boekhoudt,  S. Bronger, R. Puig Cuyás, P. Derrez, G. Dobler, A. Gut, F. Falk, M.R. Franzin, M.J. van den Hout,  E. Knobel, O. Kűnzli, T. Noten, V.K.

The third edition of FiloRosso wants to be a new opportunity to create both jewelry and meetings. So often tied to the fate, the red wire wants, more than ever, forge links between the power of invention, the research and a new-fashioned language of the greatest number of artists who express themselves through the creation of contemporary jewelery. Jewelry often talk through the unusual materials and the different approaches used. It takes advantage of metals and materials, showing us a new way to tell stories of everyday life and tales which allow us to daydream. The «preciousness» is not only the real value of the materials used to create these objects, but also serves to give them off a special aura and convey feelings and a sense of opulence not ever detectable to the human eye. As in previous editions, the fabric will be the common element – the red thread – in these jewels, the hyphen which allows each artist a new search, a new limit to be exceeded, a new world to discover.   Isabella Bembo

Inspired by old traditions. The International contest for gold, silver and jewellery designers

‘NEW NOMADS’ New Traditional Jewellery 2012 - SIERAAD Award dans Concours / Competition DEZE-DUSNTJ_DEF_LOGO
Theme:  ‘NEW NOMADS’

The preservation of worldwide cultural heritage, the reassessment of symbol bearers, the creation of new traditions, the revival of old traditions in a new form.  These last two years inspiration was to be found in jewellery from traditional costume traditions (2006)  and symbols of faith (2007) 2008 symbols of Intimacy

This year (2012) participants are invited to design a piece of jewellery based on a new theme: ‘NEW NOMADS’

MAPA dans Exposition/Exhibition

New Traditional Jewellery 2012: international design contest and exhibition. For the 2012 design contest and exhibition the professional jury of New Traditional Jewellery (NTJ) has chosen the theme ‘NEW NOMADS’, because both literally and figuratively this theme offers many possibilities for inspiration. The history of jewellery is as old as mankind. While people went in search of parts with the best living conditions they carried their valuables with them, wearing them on their bodies. Jewellery that represents economic and social status, as it still does nowadays in the case of nomadic tribes.

The dissemination of religions went hand in hand with an unprecedented range of religious jewellery and ornaments, ranging from small containers for religious texts to reliquaries and portable altars. To this day, jewellery made of stable materials like gold and gems is the guarantee for your ‘ticket home’ in times of crises or when you have to flee from high-risk areas. Due to the global financial crisis prices of this so-called ‘flight gold’ have skyrocketed. Is there an alternative? Nowadays there are quite different streams of migrants but the principle is the same: people in search of parts with better living conditions. The whole world is on the move, from refugees to tourists, from emigrants to employees of multinationals. And you don’t even have to get up from your chair: Skype e.g. has made videoconferencing into a social medium.

NTJ asks contemporary professional jewellery designers to build bridges between the traditional jewellery of e.g. nomads, pilgrims, explorers, globetrotters, refugees or colonists and possible symbols bearers representing the mobility of the ‘NEW NOMADS’. On behalf of the technical jury, the executive committee of the jury and NTJ wishes all participants much inspiration and success!

Concours « Sex, Drugs & Rock’n Roll……vices or lifestyle? » – deadline: 1er Fev. 2012

We are inviting artists to submit their artwork to
Sex, Drugs & Rock’n Roll……vices or lifestyle?*4LnqH8dkhO9P30Q7qTOzEwCOi4ZK75AU4hxXNagOiOFM5mRMfykOUqDDwBY-Mt8YbnTVoV*NoyZnmUU5vQJ*/imaginecomprata.jpg?crop=1%3A1

We began by thinking about the poet Dante who talked about “Dante’s deadly sins” in his “Divine Comedy.” How do people think about vices in our current times? Gambling, collecting items – are these vices, or a “lifestyle”?
Our project wants to reflect on the way vices exist in our everyday life. Alcohol, drugs and smoking, but also games and TV could become vices, it all depends on the way you look at them, the way one leads his or her life.

How do we think about vices in 2011? Are the above mentioned vices still considered vices these days, have new vices cropped up that Dante knew nothing about? Please submit your artwork related to this theme. The exhibition will consist of 25-30 pieces total depending on sizes of work.

Beginning with this year’s award, artists who have had a solo exhibit in a gallery or museum may also apply.

Jurors for the 2011 competition are:
Perry A. Price, Assistant Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at the Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton MA; Marion Fulk, long-standing member of AJF and a collector of contemporary jewelry; and Agnes Larsson, jewelry artist and recipient of the AJF’s 2010 Award.

AJF will be providing a cash award of $5,000 to the winner.
