TAST nº11: “Digging Deep

Digging Deep is an insight into the works of Liana Pattihis

The processes Liana uses in making her jewelry are ones of building and burying. Layer upon layer of enamel slowly obscure the foundation of silver or gold chains, forming a vitreous crust that is raw, crackly and uneven…The natural quality of the surface gives a feel of a much earlier age, yet buried under the enamel are anonymous, potentially unattractive, chains of this age of mass production. The point of delight is, not only that unique, colorful and exciting pieces of jewelry are created, but that the rules of enamelling have been broken and rewritten so successfully… ‘  Caroline Broadhead

EXPO ‘The Sweet Perfume of Decay’ – Sintra, Göteborg (SE) – 30 Aout-23 Sept. 2014

You are very welcome to my solo exhibitionThe Sweet Perfume of Decay‘ at Sintra in Gothenburg on Saturday the 30th of August. Märta Mattsson
Opening 30/8 12-16

Marta Mattsson - sweet perfume of decay

I will also hold a lecture at the gallery on Friday the 29th of August at 19.00.
I hope to see you at either of these events or at both ! :)
Lecture by Märta Mattsson 29/8 19:00

The Sweet Perfume of Decay
Sometimes I see beauty in things that other people find strange or are even repulsed by. I become fascinated when there is something you do not want to see and the feeling you get when you do not want to look at some- thing, yet you still do. My jewellery deals with the tension that lies between attraction and repulsion. I take seemingly inappropriate materials, making ordinary and familiar objects seem extraordinary and unfamiliar.
In the 18th century many new breeds of animals and plants were discovered and it was the main era of cabinets of curiosities. People collected rarities because it gave them the feeling of being in the presence of something ex- traordinary and marvellous. The cabinets of curiosities were not meant to sympathize with the creatures on dis- play, only marvel over their oddity. In a world where not many new and exotic breeds are discovered I use dead creatures in my pieces to evoke wonder. The creatures are transformed and reborn; given a new life as objects of astonishment.”  Märta Mattsson

Märta Mattsson Jewellery "‎The Sweet Perfume of Decay" - Sintra - Göthebourg (SE)

« During this year I have been working on new pieces where I use wings from butterflies, cicadas and moths. The idea of mimicry and transforming the wings to look like new species of animal appeals to me. By assembling and building new bodies out of the wings I can create mysterious creatures that uses the esthetic qualities of the wings but without making them too pretty and flower like.
As well as exploring the idea of creating new species I am also interested in the symmetry of the wings and how I can explore this in a new way. I find inspiration in images from the Rorschach test. The inkblot test is a method of psychological evaluation. Psychologists use this test in an attempt to examine the personality characteristics and emotional functioning of their patients. This test is often employed in diagnosing underlying thought disorders and differentiating psychotic from non-psychotic thinking in cases where the patient is reluctant to openly admit to psychotic thinking. »

PROGRAMME

Now a days limits and borders are changeable and exceeding limits belongs to our everyday experience. The image of the boundary as a line, which separates two or more spaces from each another, becomes a border area, a space in-between; an interface or threshold between different areas.

But what limits are exceeded in ‘Jewellery’ exactly? What are the consequences of transgressions? Can existing boundaries actually be repealed or we rather only deal with their shift and visualization? What happens when all limits are exceeded? Do we overrun at some point to an end? Borders and limitations have been part of our human history and nature from the beginning. Whether it may be a physical or mental limit to cross, it has been and is still a challenge that — often through destruction of existing norms — still helps development. Jewellery today is constantly stretching its existing borders. Shifts from being only functional and adequate to fulfill it’s long existing social position, to expropriate characteristics of fine art and gaining a strong conceptual content and presence. What are its limits? Why the aim, to make it more conceptual content and presence. What are its limits? Why the aim, to make it more than what is was for hundreds of years? What are the special means to help it grow and to change its borderlines?

Melting Point 2014 VALENCIA (Spain) – 8-11 Mai 2014

Melting Point Valencia 2014

The Jewellery Department of the School of Art and Design College of Valencia (EASD) will organise the second edition of the so-called “Melting Point Valencia. Joieria Contemporània 2014” next May. In 2012 we celebrated, due to the first Melting Point, the tenth anniversary of the implementation of the Jewellery Department and jewellery studies in our centre. The experience was fruitful in terms of the participation of institutions and jewellers, the quality of the papers presented and the exchange of experiences and contacts made during those days. Thus, we really want to take advantage of the opportunity to repeat this experience.
The aim of this meeting is still the same than before: “…for one week the EASD Valencia and the whole city become the meeting point for artists, designers, experts, collectors, scholars and broad audiences interested in jewellery in southern Europe”. However, we would like to include a further ambitious goal: that is, to consolidate and strengthen our position in the national and international scene as a cultural, artistic, academic and professional reference for Spanish contemporary jewellery. We do not claim to be a trade fair, it is not our task. Hence, our goal is to spread the work of our students and the current projection of jewellery regarding language, profession, function or symbolism.
Melting Point 2014
For this 2014 edition we have the honour to offer a wide diversity of exhibitions, conferences and other activities by highly reputed institutions such as the National Museum of Ceramics and Sumptuary Arts González Martí, or the Octubre Centre for Contemporary Culture.
We want to highlight the participation of Peter Bauhuis, Ursula Guttmann, Gisbert and Rose Stach. (Germany), Museum of Turnov (Czech Republic), Villa de Bondt Gallery (Belgium), Natalia Saldías (Chile), Alchimia School (Italy), Maden Studio (Turkey), University of Lincoln (United Kingdom), La Basilica Gallery (Barcelona), Taller Perill (Barcelona) or EAD Tarragona, among others.
Melting Point 2014
We also want to emphasise the relevance that this ancient discipline stands beyond our borders nowadays, on the artistic, educational and professional levels. Concerning this, we would like to ask the appropriate educational authorities for the deserved transition of the jewellery studies to a Degree level, following the same direction that other countries around our cultural and economic environment took years ago. This way, our professionals will no longer be in an inferior position when compared to the students of other European Union countries. In addition, as this demand is feasible due to the fact that human resources and programs already exist, we just need a political action.
Finally, we would like to invite you to visit Melting Point València. Joieria Contemporània 2014, in order to meet us, to learn from all the projects you can find here during these days, and to enjoy the jewellery as well as Valencia city. This is an experience we want to share with you.

EXPO ‘Staring : in HINDSIGHT’ – Die Neue Sammlung (Danner-Rotunde), Munich (DE) – 14-20 Mars 2014

SCHMUCK 2014 – Munich – 12-18 Mars 2014

Staring : in HINDSIGHT / SUNY NP METAL

Vernissage 14 Mars, 19 Uhr

STARING: The State University of New York at New Paltz

THE METAL PROGRAM AT THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT NEW PALTZ IN COOPERATION WITH DIE NEUE SAMMLUNG – THE INTERNATIONAL DESIGN MUSEUM MUNICH

Designed in response to the physical space that houses the exhibition, in Staring is an exercise in looking, finding, seeing and knowing.
This gallery, informally referred to as ‘under the stairs’, is an interstitial space – formed by the galleries that surround it. It is a negative of a positive, the leftover from a functional form. It lies in-between, forming the way one considers what lies on the other side of the concrete divide, what is revealed and what is hidden. As the risers and runners of multiple staircases surround the viewer, form becomes rhythmic, linear texture, closing in underfoot and overhead. In this space one is simultaneously astonished, disoriented, and mystified. While not originally conceived as an exhibition space, through imaginative thinking it became so.
As a marginal space it is not confined by traditional boundaries or conceptions. This notion of working the margin is akin to the creative strategies taught at New Paltz. Students are expected to engage the traditions of jewelry and hollowware, working within the field’s “architecture”, but not to mimic it; in dialogue through making they question function, value, and relevance to our somatic, conceptual and incorporeal experience. We look backward and forward at the same time, challenging and promoting the practice of making.
Provoked by the space itself, we ask the viewer to consider what it means to be ‘under the stairs’. In a domestic setting it is a space to keep things that are only used occasionally, or perhaps forgotten. It is a psychic space, the space of the Odradek, a space where fear of the unknown is manifested. Within this space discoveries are made, surprises can be found, and occasionally we lose even ourselves.

DIE NEUE SAMMLUNG

Talk on 16 March, 11 Uhr : Pravu Mazumdar: Understanding Surfaces. On Jewellery and Identity.
Pinakothek der Moderne. www.die-neue-sammlung.de

Human surfaces are hybrid objects involving biological and cultural elements like dress, makeup, jewellery, gait, skin, posture, voice. Contemporary societies manifest not only surfaces of products, but also human surfaces functioning as ‘packaging’ and emitting discourses on interiority that place humans within limits and define their individuality.
However, the surfaces are not only readable. They are also produced on a daily basis, not only by the individuals themselves or the global beauty industry at large, but also a whole political machinery of identity, gleaning certain constant, measurable and recognisable traits of individuality from the surface discourses, documenting them in passports and identity cards and locking in modern individuals within the shell of their identity. Modern jewellery – in its contemporary, critical manifestations and its inherent tendency of breaching tradition – can break open the shell of identity and involve individuals in an open play of enhancement and change of masks. It can indeed be understood as a means of counteracting the pressure towards identity in daily life in modern societies.
Such ideas will be presented with examples and images from the area of contemporary jewellery art.
