Coup de coeur/Decouverte ! Eva Tesarik & her faded glories

Eva Tesarik  jewels presented at JOYA 2015, « Palazzo » collection -

« In these works, Eva Tesarik has taken inspiration from two different sources, both relating to the past. The Oceanis Nox series takes inspiration from the sinking of the Titanic. All the luxury the ship was carrying disappeared into the sea, was covered in algae and coral and became part of the ocean. Tesarik spent time near Sperlonga in Italy, picking up shells, stones, objects from the beach, covered in algae and coral, just like those from the Titanic. The items from the Palazzo series are allegorical of the declined, faded glory of the Palazzi of the Italian Renaissance. They are brought to us as filtrated fragments. Tesarik found an old tray in Venice, cut it into pieces and made jewellery from the various fragments. A new glory appears and takes us into a new world.  » (No-gram shop online)

« The objects of the “Palazzo” collection stand allegoric for the (declined) (deep)faded glory of the Palazzi of the Italian renaissance. They are brought to us as filtrated fragments. I found an old tray from Venice, I cut it and made new jewelleries from it.  A new glory appears and transform us in a new world. »

Eva Tesarik often worked with « treasures from the past », from the « declined, faded glories », as in her « Oceanis nox » collection or even previously, as in the « The beauty and the beast » collection : there’s always and old, beautiful, remaining object from the past in her jewels …. a golden part of a funiture, a golden part of a tray, of a ceiling, of a building …. not only an « old thing », not only a « golden thing », but a « glorious golden old » thing, the marbles, carved moldings parts of old furniture (like chair legs in the form of lion’s paws), moulding parts of a paneled oak wall from a castle room, the crystals from the glorious old crystals chandeliers, …. as we can see in her « Time of pearls » necklace, in her « Louis » brooch, in her « In Petersburg » brooch, etc …. yes …. Love of « faded glories »

Sweet Ismini Pachi ! what happened ? « Nightmare », « Insomnia », « Solitude » ….. ???? What « black black » thoughts emerged and created the « Reinventing oneself » collection ???

« In my work the Sphere represents the various elements a personality consists of. While playing with its pieces, new shapes emerge, each one as a reflection of a different emotional state. The diversity of textures applied on every surface, expresses the multifaceted personality of the human being. »

This collection was presented in JOYA Barcelona Art Jewellery Fair on October 2015 and will now be presented in Sofa exhibition 2015 in Chicago.

Once upon a time, at JOYA 2015, was a stand from the Kookmin University (Korea), full of TREASURES …..

Here it’s not about « treasures » but about « Proliferation » ……

« When I walk in the cities, I can find a colony of mushrooms. They are living not only on roadside trees but also on fallen leaves, and they are everywhere and suddenly disappear without a trace. This group appears in silence and makes us feel their presence by filling empty spaces in cities. The mushrooms reminds me of the image of proliferation. If we take a close look at fungi, there is repetition of a certain form, gradual alteration of sizes, arrangement of individuals and rhythm seen through wrinkles and texture. » (2015 Taiwan International Metal Crafts Competition – Quality award)

sur le stand de l’AGC, à JOYA, un coup de coeur et, honte à moi, mais mieux vaut tard que jamais …., une découverte : les bijoux de Susanna Baldacci. Des structures fortes et délicates, des couleurs qui vous prennent l’oeil, à faire pleurer de bonheur, des petits mystères (pourquoi la broche s’appelle « exit » ?) qui se trouvent être des évidences lumineuses …  (… parce qu’il y a une ouverture, une échappée ….), des vides et des pleins qui aspirent l’âme ….

Quando esco di casa la mattina, l’aria frizzante, la stagione che cambia, i volti che incontro, sono elementi che spesso mi indicano una traccia. Capita che un suono, un odore, un colore, mi colgano di sorpresa dietro un angolo, incrociando altri esseri umani o sbirciando fugacemente un interno attraverso una porta socchiusa. E la giornata prende forma. Quando mi siedo allora, per iniziare il mio lavoro, gli elementi che ho sul mio banco, un pezzo di ebano, un filo d’argento, i pigmenti, quel pezzo di metacrilato traforato il giorno prima, si cercano. Possono organizzarsi in maniera armonica se la giornata è buona, discordante tra loro se sono irrequieta. Superfici cromatiche di rosso acceso, superfici cupe di ebano scuro, microcosmi azzurro-indaco: sono aree protette, ognuna a se stante dove potermi riposare. Non esiste filo logico tra un pezzo e l’altro se non il bisogno di sospensione momentenea, sono altre storie, cammei del mio stato d’animo.«

« Amo i vuoti che danno spazio al pensiero, che ti accolgono, i contrasti cromatici e delle forme, le superfici materiche, le ombre che si creano e che cambiano a seconda dei punti di vista e della luce. Spesso il “due”
ricorre nei gioielli che faccio: “due” come rapporto tra due elementi diversi ma esistenti ciascuno perchè esiste l’altro. Altre volte sono colori, forme, visioni dall’alto di luoghi che immagino lontani e incontaminati
e che amo proteggere con un vetro. I colori che utilizzo maggiormente sono i   rossi e gli arancio, i blu in tutte le sfumature fino all’indaco. »

« My work is an experimental and personal dialogue with poetry, intuition, the conscious and the unconscious, culture, experiences, emotions… I communicate the basic human emotions and memories through color, textures and narrative objects. My work is like a souvenir one takes home from a trip abroad, allowing oneself to return to the moment of purchase and be flooded with all the memories.

I am interested in the connection of two concepts, the Inside and the Outside, and the undefined space in between of them. « In the distance (« A lo lejos ») is a series of works inspired by the birds flight and how they perceive the landscape from above, is an allegory to the freedom of creation, to see beyond all, not just a part, see the order within chaos. I take as a reference the treetops and what I perceive inside, achieving lightweight pieces, transparent, geometrical and chaotic at once.
It is also an evocation of the final stage of my career, expressed on freedom of creation and seeing things in the distance.

ANIMAVIENNA  is a group of seven independent art jewellers, whose work reflects their diversity. The individual members are unique in terms of their art and concepts. They share a common belief in artistic cooperation, exchange and endeavour, as well as a firm commitment to craftsmanship.
The group focuses on lending a new dimension to conceiving and creating meticulously crafted jewellery. Major factors in the members’ work are the individual otherness of their designs and the communicability of their different approaches. Equally important are freedom of expression, exchange of ideas and mutual respect.

The very qualities that enable the members of the group to appreciate similar aspirations in others permit them to translate their own emotions and intuitions into a compelling and distinctive art form. The group is aware of the different traditions and factors at play in modern art jewellery and seeks to go beyond the confines of adornment.
The very essence of the group’s work is rooted in a quest for new forms of expression commensurate with the world in which we live and the realities of modern society. Art thus becomes a reflection of societal diversity. Akin to all other art forms, art jewellery reveals not only the current stage and continuity of its genesis, with all its fissions and fractures, but also the utopias to which it aspires.
Independent of fashionable trends and art movements, ANIMAVIENNA focuses on the basic concept of jewellery and the pleasure it affords. The manner in which the members design and develop their jewellery is clearly shaped by their personalities as artists and each contains a personal message. All the members bring their special skills to bear and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
In a globalised world that makes ever-increasing demands of the individual, the significance of creative artists as transmitters of cultural values in their encounters with people of the most diverse origins, with different approaches to life and life styles, cannot be overstated. Given its body-related individuality, this holds particularly true for art jewellery

The original « Pearl Grey » of 2009 was an assemblage work consisting of found and made elements of porcelain, glass, wood, plastic and pearl. It referenced a traditional cup and saucer of which the cup had been magically replaced by a bead necklace. For this new work I have translated that idea to the typology of a glass ‘saucer and cup’. It is again a combination of found and made elements but this time the work is completely transparent; almost like an x-ray of it’s predecessor

The ‘Still Life’ Brooches that I have made between 2009 and 2012 can be seen as a contemporary interpretation of 17th and 18th century Dutch Still Life paintings. This subject was preferable used to portray items of daily life that were emotionally and economically significant for people of that time.  Within my ‘Still Lifes’, I sliced existing glasswork and rearranged them into new compositions. They represented a perfect translation of the three dimensional to the two dimensional, the realistic vista of the glasses to the medium of jewellery. The body is taking on the role of the canvas as it were…  Within the new work I explored another way of looking at tableware than in a static composition: I wanted to express a certain precarious dynamic that is inherent to drinking glasses during a sociable meal. I tried to catch this moment of a glass tumbling, undecided yet if it is going to fall or stay upright.

Just as men are not just men, and women just women, meat is never just meat. It has it´s past and origin, a story which is so often simply forgotten. Living creatures which are very much alive until they are nothing more than materials, for those who still choose to use them. Even the life before their death is so often more than problematic, as we all know. As we all know.

 I started to re-consider a piece from 2001, that never has been sold, although I liked it very much, ‘Beautiful City – Pink Stairs’.  This piece is really symmetrical, so I decided to look for a way to separate it in two parts and finish both parts in a different way, in order to get two different pieces. I have re-collected parts of other (unsold) pieces from about the same time (1999 and 2000) and have been re-approaching and re-thinking them: I made ‘Crystals’ with them, like I did in my most recent work. So I have been mixing time and thinking. And size: the sizes I used earlier were different from the sizes I used in the later ‘Beautiful City’ series, they wouldn’t have fit. But because the ‘Crystals’ are liquid (they adapt to the square) the size of the elements was not importantanymore. So I could re-take these old pieces into the new time now, I have re-used them, re-connected them.
This ‘expansion’ offered me more possibilities: I re-used the material I already had without loss of material or time. The possibility to re-make the old pieces still exists. And it gave me two new pieces. So I multiplied my possibilities. A new life.

 Formal Research – A necklace (2015) composing of six chain units is the starting point of the group of six rings. A closed-end loop of each ring was divided in sections, one / two / three /… / six, by the difference between the fat and thin parts. The works were made under the following keywords: dividing / sequencing / sizing.
Formal Research initially focused on one classical type of jewellery: the chain. The project is mainly about the form of each connecting chain unit and how the unit connects to its neighbours.
During the sculpting process, the shapes were transformed because of them being in the hand and through time. I did not edit the outcomes and will present the rings as they are. The try-outs are the finals and vice versa.

 In the Nineties, in the making of the older brooch, my goal was to control the metal, to have the metal do whatever I wanted. In this latest brooch, made a few days ago, I let instead the metal take control over myself, and let it take me wherever its will would go.

The reason why I chosen my self-portrait, is that it is probably one of my most well known pieces of jewellery. It is made in steel and etched.  The material and techniques I mostly work with. For the Re-version I saw out the silhouette in 2 mm veneer, divided the image in 3 parts and painted them in similar but for each piece different colours, before I glued them together. The fact that they are divided in three parts, with the dark sawing-line between, gives them a comic-like impression.
This impression is even emphasised by the bigger size, which is possible by the lightness of the material, and is completely different from the original steel-one. While the surface of the steel-portrait and other previous work was the key technology for building the image, the colour for some years been a part of my jewellery.

 

To revisit, remake, salvage, reinterpret, adapt, convert, converse, rethink…
  Why have we asked some of the artists we work with as gallery owners to reinterpret one of their works? We could say it’s because we’re interested in talking about time. And by “revisiting” we mean discussing the notion of time. But in what way? That’s the question.
Time passes, it is made, interpreted, felt and suffered, it escapes, drifts away, becomes trapped or stretched, sometimes it is intelligently ignored and, why not, it is exercised. Reinterpreting a work, a fiction or precis is a way of addressing time, a way of exploring a landscape in order to try and understand it. And we thought this exercise would provide an interesting opportunity to discuss time.
Revisiting in order to reflect… an exercise for the artist.
  Are there any changes in these artists’ works? Should there be? Is time involved? Without a shadow of a doubt, the answer is yes. But that barely scrapes the surface of what we want to know.
We’re more likely to find out what we want to know if the work enables us to answer questions such as: What kind of time is involved? Is there any usefulness? Is there any spirituality? Are there any aesthetics? Is there any abstraction? Is there any progress?
The exhibition is also designed to be understood through an analysis of the different types of answers provided by the works as a whole. As you will see, there are answers that simplify, offering minor changes, non-answers, coherent answers (if you have prior knowledge of the artist’s trajectory), inspired answers, uninventive answers… As we have said, evaluating the “revisits” as a whole provides additional knowledge.
When it comes down to it, what we most value is the sensation we observe and feel when the artist takes some distance and moves away from the centre stage in an attempt to provide an answer. As observers, we believe this circumstance helps to achieve universality and thus provide an intellectual satisfaction, that of communicating and objectifying the creation to the full in order to express and play with a more authentic reality.
Revisiting in order to look afresh… the viewer’s exercise.
We switch from observation to understanding, and vice versa. We observe in order to find differences between similar things and we understand when we find similarities between different things. Accustomed as we are today to viewing several pieces in a highly random fashion, pausing to stop in order to take a fresh look at a work “inaugurated” some time ago is another exercise we wish to propose. This exercise may help us assimilate better in this era of accumulation and, on occasions, superficiality. There can be no doubt that the way in which a work attracts and engages us is based on the knowledge we may have of it.
Knowledge without criticism is an indication of the end of everything. Yet, on the other hand, what can be said of criticism without knowledge? Are we capable of enjoying what these workers of art offer us? Will we be capable of evaluating what they show us? Can we offer knowledge-based criticism? Frankly, we find there is a lack of humility on the part of the viewer. And we’re all viewers.

The contemporary art jewellery collective Bórax08001 is pleased to invite you to the inauguration of the exhibition Bórax08001, 5 Years, on Thursday, October 8, at 6 pm, in the Blava Room of the Escola Massana (Carrer Hospital 56, 08001, Barcelona, Spain). The exhibition, framed within OFFJOYA, commemorates the collective’s first five years of life with a selection of its members’ most representative projects. The show will remain open until October 10th.

BoraxConference BORAX 08001 « What do you have in your hands? »
The Bórax08001 collective has invited JOYA 2015′s participating artists to collaborate with them and carry out the What do you have in your hands? project in their own cities, with their own jewels and with their own unknown public. The goal of this project is to reach a part of society that is unaware of Contemporary Art Jewellery. By going out on the streets, direct contact between the creators and the passers-by can be established and feedback gathered. During Bórax08001′s conference, the collection of reactions and dialogues obtained from these interventions will be shared and reflected upon by the members of the collective, the participants and the audience.

Bórax08001 is a basic component in jewellery because it prevents oxide from forming and, at the same time, works as a flux favoring the flow of metal when it is being soldered and fused. The Bórax08001 collective acts as an antioxidant that drives our artistic creation, but also as a flux, favoring the flow of ideas and concepts as well as the development of new techniques and trends in contemporary art jewellery.
We come from multiple geographic coordinates and backgrounds. This particularity has enriched us personally and as a group ever since our paths crossed at the Escola Massana (Barcelona, Spain). As we grew up and deepened our skills as jewellers at Massana, strong synergies and complicities were created between us. And we have chosen Bórax08001 as the means to keep them alive, searching for new horizons and goals while sharing experiences and learning from each other.
Our work can be defined as the cartography of personal and experimental dialogues through contemporary art jewellery. Dialogues through matter, space, color… based on quests, poems, memories, doubts, thoughts, mistakes, games, dreams, intuition, perfection, light, consciousness, unconsciousness, beauty, and emotions.
Bórax08001 means contemporary, signature, art jewellery. Signature, because we value work from beginning to end and we wish to recover the value of authenticity, taking pride and joy in creating high-quality jewellery, putting special emphasis on the details. Contemporary, because our pieces of jewellery speak for us and reflect the society we live in. And art(istic) because we strive to express ourselves through metaphors and symbols while we create unique pieces.We conceive our collective as a medium, a tool, a channel that allows us to disseminate contemporary jewellery culture to the public unaware of this form of art. We are convinced that to make our work known it’s not only important to show it in the traditional established places, but also to approximate our artistic and conceptual vision  to people who are outside of the contemporary jewellery circuit. We try to do so by taking jewellery to their own territory in a natural, open and simple way through actions in public spaces which  occur in different places.  Our intention, through these direct interventions with society, is to bring closer the contemporary jewellery concept and to extend the conception of art to jewellery
