Le LABO

 La Galerie d’EMA présente du 2 février au 26 mars 2017 l’exposition Le LABO. Un collectif de 16 artistes joaillières, formées dans différentes écoles du Québec présente les fruits de ses recherches dans le cadre des ateliers de Noël Guyomarc’h, galeriste montréalais.
Le vernissage de l’exposition aura lieu samedi 4 février à partir de midi . Plusieurs des artistes seront présents pour expliquer leur art, leurs démarches, leurs façons et échanger avec les visiteurs sur leur savoir-faire.
Le LABO pose ses valises pendant 8 semaines à Trois-Rivières après avoir exposé à Montréal, à Ottawa et à Québec et en septembre prochain sera en vitrine au Harbourfront Centre à Toronto.
Cette exposition invite les visiteurs, de la région trifluvienne, à faire une rencontre inoubliable avec une expression contemporaine de l’art de la bijouterie. Nombre de ces créations ont été vu et remarqué sur différentes plateformes et expositions tant nationales qu’internationales. Le bijou devient vecteur d’intention, de symbole et de préciosité à travers des matériaux et des techniques qui sauront surprendre les curieux.
16 démarches, 16 univers, des dizaines de raisons de laisser son esprit s’ouvrir à l’art de la joaillerie sous un nouvel angle.

L’exposition CURIOSITY tentera de vous le prouver, en présentant une collection d’objets étranges et intrigants, tant dans leur expression esthétique et formelle que dans les techniques utilisées ou le choix des matériaux. Véritables liens entre la main et l’esprit de l’artiste, ces créations dévoileront leur côté sensible, parfois poétique ou même sulfureux.
Vingt-quatre artistes issus des Offices des métiers d’art des 5 Provinces wallonnes et du World Carfts Council – Belgique Francophone vont vous étonner au travers d’un parcours où se mêleront émotions et curiosités.

Duality of Presence, is a curatorial collaboration between American Professors of Jewelry/Metalsmithing Kerianne Quick and Jess Tolbert.
The exhibition brings together contemporary jewelers and metalsmiths working in the United States, who use specific material and form to tell stories about place, histories, and conveyance.

(37) Duality of Presence

dualityofpresence  takes an explicit look at a generation of American contemporary makers united by the urge to connect to things and the world. As we grapple with the legacy of [alternative] material use in art jewelry in the age of globalization – we are united in the urgency our works express to identify with and bring insight to what it means to be in the world now. This exhibition was born from a noticeable shared concern and strategy expressed in the work of curators, colleagues, and other makers in the field. Within the field of contemporary art jewelry many reject or limit the use of precious materials associated with conventional jewelry in favor of non-traditional materials, focusing on a formal expression that may be conceptual in some way, or simply aesthetic. However some contemporary practitioners, including the artists in this exhibition, are mining material – calling upon origins, sourcing, histories, and/or supply chain information to embed value into the materials they select and use. This excavation is a powerful tool for authenticating and enhancing their underlying concepts. 

Recognizing this shared methodology as an important movement in American contemporary art jewelry and metalsmithing, Duality of Presence defines and explores those engaged with ‘material specificity’ in their making. We position the term ‘material specificity’ as a way of looking towards how material communicates complex and distinct narratives. Thinking of materials as active agents in the creation of meaning pushes past the notion that they are meaningless conduits and asserts a more substantive role; as conveyors of information, bearers of histories, and assemblers of discourses. Material Specific Artists enter into a deliberate collaboration and cooperative act with materials in the pursuit of meaning.

 Duality of Presence defines and explores ‘material specificity’ as a movement in American contemporary art jewellery and metalsmithing where artists aim to reveal hidden narratives through the use of specific materials. The works emphasize the importance of maker-viewer communication, by demonstrating the effectiveness of material centered conveyance, where artists tell stories that connect to the wider world. The works demonstrate a broad range of subject matter, with material specificity as the common thread. In addition to the physical display of objects, the exhibition will include two interactive digital components, a innovative use of virtual reality and an interactive website. Virtual reality headsets integrated into the gallery display will show VR videos produced by selected participating artists using a virtual reality multi-lens camera. Each video will transport the viewer from the gallery to a significant site or moment chosen and filmed by the artist.

Hatara Project started in 2015 as a collaboration between Annea Lounatvuori and Christine Jalio. The name Hatara, from the Finnish hattara – cotton candy – describes something dreamy, sweet and concrete but eventually fragile. Hatara is a meeting point between jewellery artists that have different backgrounds and come from different countries. It’s a connection, an exchange of culture, an experience and knowledge. Now we are 14 women from Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Germany, Japan, France, Australia and The Netherlands.

 While the Wunderkammer, or cabinet of curiosities, emerged in the courts of Europe from the 16th century onward, Korea was witnessing the growing popularity of virtual bookshelves in its royal courts, and later among its bourgeoisie. This genre of Korean painting is called Chaekgado, a sort of painted Wunderkammer showing from various perspectives the books and belongings of a scholar.
Although the traditions of the Wunderkammer vary in form and function between Korea and Europe, they have significant aspects in common. In each culture the cabinet of curiosities is an intimate space filled with people’s desires and longings for a foreign world. Both reflect the yearning for precious things and a curiosity for nature as something exotic.
In allusion to the Korean Chaekgado as well as the European Wunderkammer, Keum Art Projects presents the exhibition ‘The Room of Desires’ at the newly opened raumwerk in Munich-Westend. ‘The Room of Desires’ presents paintings, installations and design objects from Korea side by side with those from Germany, creating a cabinet of wishes, longings and desires. The exhibition features supposedly mundane objects such as candle holders, ceramic vessels and writing utensils, along with playful and contemplative installations by visual artists and designers.
The idea of the cosmos, which the Wunderkammer and Chaekgado attempted to capture through objects and books, is being trivialised by the digital revolution in our current age of the internet. In a world where books are collected by Google and desires are fulfilled on the internet, ‘The Room of Desires’ investigates the predilections and yearnings of our time, and tries to rediscover human desire and longings in objects.

ALAFRANGADimitar Stankov seeks a way to depict the sound images emerging in human mind after its interaction with certain sound or traditional Bulgarian folklore music combining craftsmanship and innovative technology. The music represents the traditional manners and it can be used to chase away evil spirits or to bring happiness and joy. This duality inspires him to materialize the sound that can be heard but cannot be felt by touch.NIGHTLIGHT SKIN: Jonathan Hens’ work speaks of recent developments in today’s world, which has seen a fusion between the banal and the subcultures and becomes a place where men and women have merged into androgynous beings. His designs are the result of an intense search for an alternative identity. Rather than a classic example of beauty, the viewer gets to see Hens’ interpretation of it.

Jewellery exhibitions are often presented in sterile glass cabinets. This leads to a distance between object and viewer and limits the freedom, which could develop in this sensual encounter.
Here, at the exhibition tog_ther !, curated by Gisbert Stach and Rose Stach, the motto is: chairs instead of showcases!
Twenty international author jewellery artists gather with their extraordinary objects in dialogue with strongly individualistic seats, from weight benches to a sandbag wall.
A potently interactive chair by Christoph Zellweger from Switzerland; a self-portrait stool by Arek Wolski from Warsaw; cheap pretense and reality from two female Budapest artists; and David Bielander Thonet chair sausage links, are among what’s to find.

Emese Benczúr forms the words “LET IT SHINE” on a rainbow-coloured surface using ear studs, while Réka Lörincz presents grooming gloves with enticingly glittering golden nails on a lavatory lid in her piece of art titled  Woman at Work. David Bielander, a native of Basel now living in Munich, even transforms the chair itself into a jewellery object by removing elements of the curved armrest of a Thonet chair and shaping them into sausage necklaces, explaining that the sausages had always been present in these chairs and he has now “set them free”!

‘LOOT: Mad About Jewelry’ Returns this Spring with 54 Artists from 21 Countries

From April 4 through 8, 2017, the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) presents LOOT: MAD About Jewelry, the annual exhibition and sale of contemporary art jewelry. Now in its 17th edition, LOOT presents a cross-section of the most exciting cutting-edge art jewelry designs, while offering the public a rare opportunity to meet and acquire pieces directly from some of the most skilled creators in the field. A striking example of the evolving possibilities of jewelry as an art form, LOOT: MAD About Jewelry champions the vision and craftsmanship of outstanding art jewelers—most of whom have never before shown work in the United States.

This year’s edition welcomes 54 artists from 21 countries, the majority of whom have never been shown in New York. All were selected by Bryna Pomp following a full year of travel and research. For the first time, LOOT will feature three artists from Iceland and one from Romania. There will also be artists from Argentina (1), Austria (2), Belgium (1), Canada (1), Denmark (3), Finland (2), France (5), Germany (4), Greece (2), Holland (1), Israel (1), Italy (5), Korea (2), Norway (1), Portugal (1), Spain (2), United Kingdom (10), and United States (6). [.....]

The 2017 presentation includes driftwood, neoprene, marble, sheer plywood, textiles, ceramic, aluminum, beading, and acrylic. A significant trend this year is the use of recycled materials, including china tableware, plastic bottles and shopping bags, and even skateboards.”
This year, over two dozen artists have designed jewelry using natural forms as their subjects. Artists showcasing their nature-inspired designs include Hebe Argentieri (Argentina); Katharina Eder (Austria); Ute van der Plaats (Belgium); Aino Favén (Finland); Silke Lazarević (Germany); Guðbjörg Ingvarsdóttir (Iceland); Mario Salvucci (Italy); Sowon Joo (Korea); Sunyoung Kim (Korea); Åse-Marit Thorbjørnsrud (Norway); Raluca Buzura (Romania); Ana Hagopian (Spain); Jane Adam (UK); Jacqueline Clarke (UK); Olivia Creber (UK); and Iradj Moini (USA). Visitors will meet Finnish artist Inni Pärnänen, who makes floral designs using sheer plywood, and English artist Rie Taniguchi, whose jewelry depicts animals and birds. Fellow English jewelry artist Olivia Creber uses molten metal with minerals, while French artist Delphine Nardin uses sea glass, gold, and silver to design jewelry inspired by the ocean. And Icelandic artist Helga Mogensen uses driftwood and visible threads to create unique statement necklaces. »

 

THE LOOT ACQUISITION PRIZE
Awarded by a jury, the LOOT Acquisition Prize seeks to recognize a LOOT jewelry artist whose work reflects a maturity in artistry and concept; exhibits both a superior and experimental understanding of materials and form; and demonstrates expertise in technique and execution. The 2017 jury is chaired by William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator Shannon R. Stratton, Assistant Curator Barbara Paris Gifford, and LOOT Curator Bryna Pomp. The 2017 LOOT Acquisition Prize will be awarded on April 3 at the Opening Benefit dinner.

« Born in Germany and based in Brussels, Belgium, Ute van der Plaats has worked as a jewelry designer since 2009. In addition to contemporary jewelry, she has a passion for graphic design and ceramics, and her latest collection combines these three disciplines. A few years ago, she discovered porcelain—the white gold—and fell in love with it. Since then, this pure material has become the starting point in the creation process of her jewelry collections. She is attracted by its translucent white color, the fragile appearance that belies a surprisingly solid character, and the almost sensual texture of unglazed porcelain. By integrating different materials, such as 3D-printed ornaments and digitally designed images, into handcrafted porcelain creations, she translates traditional jewelry concepts into contemporary pieces. «

ARTIST HIGHLIGHTS :

  • Ferràn Iglesias Barón (Spain) has over 20 years of experience in goldsmithing, encompassing academic studies and written publications, teaching, and exhibitions. He is the recipient of numerous awards. Essence and meaning are two driving forces of his growth and creative process. Barón uses the interaction of different mediums and chromas to express emotion, transcending aesthetics to create a new form of beauty and appeal.
  • Ute van der Plaats (Belgium) integrates different materials, such as 3D-printed ornaments and digitally designed images, into handcrafted porcelain creations, thus translating traditional jewelry concepts into contemporary pieces.
  • Michelle Cangiano (Australia) produces limited-edition handmade contemporary jewelry and one-off pieces for private commissions. For her “Paper Cuts” collection, Cangiano draws on her painting background and employs the simple yet time-consuming technique of threading and knotting paper discs to create pieces that seem to shift and change color as they move with the wearer.
  • Julie Decubber (France) specializes in antique porcelain and earthenware plates, turning ordinary objects into unique jewels that explore the theme of memory. Decubber cuts and reassembles pieces in order to highlight what is precious in the ordinary, applying techniques of the jeweler, stonecutter, and potter to generate elegant and unexpected combinations.
  • Aino Favén (Finland) moves between art and design to explore the achievements of nature and man. Her pieces made of translucent plastic bags are subtle comments on the large trash islands floating in oceans and endangering nature and wildlife. They also serve as memorial garlands for birds and other animals who have died from eating plastic waste.
  • Aurélie Guillaume (Canada) is reviving the idea of narrative in enameling through a contemporary context fueled by street art, comics, pop art, and counterculture. A jeweler, enamelist, and illustrator, she begins her designs with illustrations, which through the process of enameling are given new life in the physical world as wearable objects.
  • Guðbjörg Ingvarsdóttir (Iceland) takes inspiration from the Icelandic wilderness. She allows her collections to continually evolve, underlining the organic process of translating concept into finished article.
  • Sunyoung Kim (Korea) finds inspiration in the world of plants, which though frail have a strong hold on life. She focuses on representing this strength with thin metal plates, which she processes through hammering and injection using various chasing tools.
  • Konrad Laimer (Italy) has defined his works through themed workshops ranging from jewelry to objects and graphics. Through installations, international workshops, and multimedia works, he transfers his concepts to various artistic mediums and locations. The Alps have become Laimer’s main source of inspiration in regard to both themes and materials.
  • Silke Lazarević (Germany) focuses on natural materials, with the aim of expressing their inherent qualities and various potentialities. She finds inspiration in the coincidence involved in the process of working with parchment, which as a natural product follows its own logic.
  • Helga Mogensen (Iceland) creates neckpieces of all sorts, as well as smaller-scale works such as earrings, using driftwood in combination with thread and sterling silver. Mogensen considers the thread to represent human connection.
  • Iradj Moini (United States), a jewelry designer with a background in architecture, specializes in the usage of bold stones. In 2006, his jewelry was on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of Iris Apfel’s collection, in addition to being featured at the Louvre, where he has three pieces in the permanent collection.
  • Delphine Nardin (France) designs jewelry around pieces of found sea glass, rough stones formed billions of years ago, and other collected relics. She combines these found eroded treasures with 18-karat gold or silver to create completely unique, delicate, and understated pieces of wearable history, which forge new links between archaeology and modernity.
  • Hélène Prime (France) creates unique pieces made of horn and of leather, each adorned with semiprecious stones. All of her creations are handmade with the greatest care in Paris and produced in limited series, using metal gilded with fine gold and natural stones.
