« As a visual artist, my relationship with jewelry is bidirectional. My jewelry is influenced from my artistic research. Observation and painting require the engagement of all of our senses, thus, in my work I draw on memory and therefore on my senses.
Addressing jewelry as micro sculpture, I refer to form, material, colors and texture to conceptualize personal memories and my view of social and cultural issues into art. »

Yiota Vogli’s interview

26-04-2017
Where is your inspiration coming from?
It’s very important to stay mind open. I seek inspiration everywhere; the ideas are always out there. It’s about being in the right state of mind to take the ‘half formed pictures’ and turn them into something that works.
What are you trying to communicate in particular with your artwork?
Making art is a self expression but most is a way to communicate and share ideas or emotions.
Which material you prefer to use and why ?
It depends of the idea I want to communicate! I love working with simple non precious materials like paper or paper pulp combined with metals like silver or oxidized brass.
How much value do you give to researching material for your creations?
Is very important to make a research of the materials you use in every project, to experiment up to the limits of them.
Is it more important for you the process, or the final artwork itself?
Both, but I am enjoying the process a lot! Every piece is a challenge.
Is there an artist you prefer and why ?
There are many, I prefer those works which are simple, brief, concise and direct.
Have you ever thought to collaborate with other artists , or you like to work on your own?
Making art is a lonely procedure, but Yes! I would love the opportunity to collaborate with other artists.
Where do you feel you are at with this last collection?
As an artist I transfer onto my work pictures, stimuli and sentiments.
What have you discovered of yourself, are you satisfied ? Looking deeper inside me… I feel that I am in a good direction!
Two words to describe your last artwork collection.
Unconscious thoughts.

ARTIST STATEMENT
The extraordinary power of objects is obtained because people believe in them. The more mundane the objects are, the more powerful they become. My practice contextualizes the embodied energy that is submerged beneath the layers of vintage leather gloves. The fragments of ordinary gloves convey a tactile and erotic interaction, emphasizing the physical movements between certain parts of body and garments. When the body is absent, the empty, internal structure retains evidence of human existence. It remains full of authentic spirit and fantasy.
Through the processes of deconstructing and reconstructing materials into symbolic forms, I uncover the intimate and sensual power of humanity. The individual records and stories from the gloves turn into something that is universally relatable. Yet, it loops back to the idea of private at the same time. When the broad concept of primitive and elemental human desire meets the audience or wearer, it encourages them to find his or her own sensations and conclusions of desire. It is a moment when ordinary objects become surreal and uncanny in order to redeem the socially constructed expectations and perceptions.

« Some years ago I used to believe: “my education and experience in architecture is guiding my creativity and my work is mostly determined by the interest to compose fine metals with alternative material and define new forms.”
Later on I concretised my thoughts stating: “Architecture is built environments, planned and designed to function as shelter or vessels of activities and thus it is fostering a physical relationship with the user, inhabitant or viewer. Jewelry takes this physical relationship further into intimacy by the change of scale and placement on the body. Through my work, I find it intriguing to explore ideas of space, scale and absence of symmetry, enabling me to combine precious metals with non-precious elements. Designing jewelry feels like investigating form, structure, and balance to derive a piece of art which will have an intimate physical relationship with the human body and will be completed only when it becomes part of the wearer’s experience and expression. A piece of jewelry is a powerful vehicle for communicating our identity.”
Recently I realized that my curiosity is the most powerful motivating factor behind my work. I’m curious to see things that I visualize becoming facts, to elaborate an idea, to experiment on a certain technique, to see how this or that material is treated, to investigate on however a vision can be a wearable object and yet to see how others perceive my work. »

Touchy Feely Exhibition  /  Baltimore Jewelry Center – USA

Touchy Feely Exhibition / 14 Apr - 02 Jun 2017 - Baltimore Jewelry Center

An exhibition that explores the tactile experience of jewelry. Adam Gopnik writes “Touch is the unsung sense – the one that we depend on most and talk about the least… the work of the world is done by handling it. We live by feel.” Jewelry is an intimate and sensual art form, providing a tactile experience for both the wearer and the observer. It’s an excellent medium for exploring the unsung sense of touch.

While most visual art can only be enjoyed through sight, jewelry not only invites but encourages touch. As makers create work, they engage with their sense of touch, making decisions about materiality, structure, and form that will later engage the observer’s sense of touch, communicating a host of sensations and feelings. A dialogue between the maker and the observer is thus built on the social language of touch.

Juan Harnie - 'Pink Carnation' - Brooch - 2016 - Polyurethane, syringes, silver, steelJuan Harnie Jewellery · ‘Pink Carnation’ – Brooch – Aesthetical Injection collection – 2016 – Polyurethane, syringes, silver, steel

« Aesthetical Injection
Designing this collection Juan Harnie used medical materials to create attractive, floral looking jewellery. Juan has always seen beauty in materials that have little to no aesthetical value to others. These materials in particular are usually linked to unpleasant situations like hospitals and doctor visits, but now they are taken out of this context and made into uncanny pieces of jewellery. Juan got his inspiration from flowers and plants, which always seem to please the eye of the beholder. Even when a plant or flower turns out to be hazardous, poisonous or possibly deadly, at first people will always attribute positive feelings towards seeing them. Contradictory, syringes that are designed to administer medicine and in fact heal people are met with fear, disgust and a general feeling of unease. Using these syringes in colourful, floral pieces of jewellery, mimicking the shape and colour of the ever-so-loved flower, might just make people reconsider their initial feelings towards syringes and see the beauty the designer saw in them. In addition to the syringes, sterile medical gauze is used to imprint the silver backs of the pieces. This medical gauze once again fulfils its original purpose: being worn on the body and thus soothing an inner ache. (Syringes, polyurethane, zirconia, brass, silver, gauze, resin)

Born in Germany and based in Brussels, Belgium, Ute van der Plaats has worked as a jewelry designer since 2009. In addition to contemporary jewelry, she has a passion for graphic design and ceramics, and her latest collection combines these three disciplines. A few years ago, she discovered porcelain—the white gold—and fell in love with it. Since then, this pure material has become the starting point in the creation process of her jewelry collections. She is attracted by its translucent white color, the fragile appearance that belies a surprisingly solid character, and the almost sensual texture of unglazed porcelain. By integrating different materials, such as 3D-printed ornaments and digitally designed images, into handcrafted porcelain creations, she translates traditional jewelry concepts into contemporary pieces
