Inspired by architectural forms and topographical shapes in nature, I aspire to create works which combine the renderings of an architect with the delicate skills of a master jeweler. Employing multiple gages of gold and silver wire in varied tones, my works are distinguished by their « see-through-spaces. » Fluidly interlinked organic forms suggest dynamic movement, especially accentuated by the white and black of silver and shakudo. Essential to my conception is creating a structure, with a sense of volume and lightness that invokes a feeling of infinite space. Jee Hye Kwon’s work is presented at Mobilia Gallery as a part of the series Spotlight Exhibitions that  feature a small collection of an artist’s most current work for a short period of time.

« The Chihuahuan desert of west Texas, where I live, has played a pivotal role in shaping the way I approach my jewelry. The barren mountains with the desert pushed up to their edges are bold, dramatic, aggressive and seductive, providing a continual source of inspiration and study. The luminous energy of light that bathes the desert can swiftly transform from sharp and shrieking to subtle and sensual, all within a day’s time. Capturing the refraction and dispersal of light with my jewelry through the orchestration of body motion has held my fascination for decades and continues to challenge and inform my ideas of light. » – Rachelle Thiewes

Yoko Shimizu: Spotlight Exhibition

« My approach to jewellery often begins with a focus on the relationship between the jewellery piece and the human body. I look for simplicity and harmony in this relationship through the process of making: experimenting with materials and forms, constructing one part at a time, pausing to see the effect on the body. In the end I feel the need to leave an imperfection or add or eliminate an element, so that there is something a bit off or unexpected. At times I am in search of tension, rigor and sometimes a touch of warmth.
« The theme of the series in colored resin is ‘Transformation.’ It is a part of a study in the transformation of forms, materials and colors. Pieces of wood are transformed into resin and the surface of wood is transferred onto the surface of resin. Transformation from wood to resin, from natural to artificial, from opaque to transparent. The transformation continues with the movement of the wearer and reflection of light, losing something but gaining something at the same time.«  Yoko Shimizu

« [This is] the one life we know we have. I can’t be complacent about the world I live in. It’s important to me to use art in a manner that incites people to look and then carry something home – even it it’s subliminal – that might make a change in them. Art can be a life force. That’s why so many people in other cultures integrate it into everyday use. I know I’ve got an itch. I guess I just want to keep making work that confounds me. I want to be confused, ignited, knocked down by my own work. I believe in messing with stereotypes, prodding the viewer to reassess. »

Kwon combines the delicate skill of a master jeweler and the strong command of a sculptor, articulating architectural space with silver, gold, diamonds and semi-precious stones and hand-soldering each element.
Kwon received a BFA in Accessories Design and a AAS in Jewelry Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology where she graduated with honors. Her work can be found in numerous private collections.

Mariko Kusumoto: Translucent Explorations

« My impetus and inspiration was discovering tsumami zaiku, an ancient technique used by craftsmen since the Edo period (1603-1867), for fabric flower hair ornaments, worn with kimonos. This origami-like technique, creates complex and beautiful patterns.
Although I am a metalsmith, I was immediately drawn into this fabric world, completely the opposite of metal. I enjoy combining the classical techniques with a modern aesthetic. The process of discovering and exploring, takes me to different places. I feel endless, unlimited possibilities with these techniques and materials, polyester, silk, thread and heat. » Mariko Kusumoto

« Nora Rochel : Spotlight » – Mobilia Gallery

Mobilia Gallery is pleased to present a spotlight exhibition of new jewelry by Nora Rochel. « Inspired by the wordplay of the German word « querbeet, » meaning unsystematic, mix and match as well as referencing flower beds, Nora Rochel explores the world of flowers and organic growth as visual form-giving and expressiveness in both jewellery and everyday objects. Wearing Nora Rochel’s rings turns one‘s hands into small landscapes and gardens. Many of the rings are fanciful, but often the source of inspiration is a real flower. Characteristic features are hidden details like small flowers on the inside or the use of different metals in one piece. »

This collection represents several of the pieces made during Rochel’s three-month residency in the City of Erfurt, Germany, also known as the « City of Flowers » due to its seed breeding industry. « I used my time in Erfurt to experiment freely. It was important to me to explore different themes that relate to this city and let my impressions pour into my jewellery. »

« Yong Joo Kim: Spotlight » -  Mobilia Gallery  15-Aug-2013 – 28-Sep-2013

From August 15th through September 28th, Mobilia Gallery is pleased to spotlight the innovative sculptural jewelry of Yong Joo Kim, created from ordinary materials such as velcro and thread.Yong Joo Kim
« My work introduces unconventional use of familiar artifacts into a world full of conventions. By assembling, grouping, clustering, and piling, the small and simple elements become complex, and give rise to the unexpected. As the wearer approaches my work, the experience of perspective shifts and sudden realizations spark wonder, discovery, tension, joy and play. My investigation of creation, innovation, and transformation questions the definition of value, and provides a never-ending field for invention. » – Yong Joo Kim
