Raluca Buzura Solo Exhibition

IRREVERSIBLE
*impossible to return to a previous condition

 Opening: 02 December at 19.00
 Raluca Buzura Solo Exhibition
Popeye Loves Olive – Art Space presents, for the first time in Greece the Romanian jewelry artist Raluca Buzura. Using porcelain as a medium, the artist is creating three-dimensional jewelry, combining the organic forms with the elements of nature.

Raluca Buzura Solo Exhibition « IRREVERSIBLE

*impossible to return to a previous condition
Each human being lives for himself and takes his own actions, but as soon as he does it, this action, committed at a certain moment in time becomes irreversible and makes itself a part of the history. Therefore, my whole work defines the irreversibility of the actions I chose to take and of the material itself: once acquired a certain shape, at the end of the process, it cannot go backward, it becomes permanent. »
Nothing we do is inevitable, but everything we do is irreversible” -Joy Williams

About the artist:
———————————–
I attended the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, department ceramic-glass-metal, and then, from 2007,
I followed master in the same section.
During the studies, my works were in the installation area, participating in various projects and exhibitions. Since 2009, main focus becomes contemporary jewelry design.
My interest in jewelry may also come from the fact that this area has not been given much attention. Frequently, people use to see it only as an over plus brought to the human body, that has a value depending on the material used. Therefore, it was also a challenge to change viewer’s angle and to reveal an alternative, and more precisely that jewelry can be considered a work of art in its own right, having an artistic understanding, concept and message that can cover a wide range of fields. I continued to work by maintaining a preference for ceramic materials, due to the transformation of the material from one state to another: once acquired a certain shape, it can’t return to what it was before.
I like to combine seemingly fragile ceramic material with metal hardness or the warmth of a fabric, then to submit the form to compositional experiments that create the most expressive side of my creations. My work is a translation in porcelain of my personal experiences, trying to obliterate these traces during the process by simplifying the boundaries between real and abstract, in a swirl of colors and lines waterfalls from which are foreseen flashes of gold. The result of these experiences I like to think that is a legacy, a proof of my existence that reflects on the society, making it if not better, at least more beautiful and trying to rekindle the gap between public and art, by presenting a variety of aesthetic shapes and ideas that could remove it from the serial area.

EXPO ‘URBAN ARCHAEOLOGY’ – Popeye loves Olive gallery, Athens (GR) – 4-18 Nov. 2016

URBAN ARCHAEOLOGY

Inauguration: 04 Νovember, 19.00h
Tosa Borreda - Urban Archaeology - 2016

« The Urban Archaeology includes four aspects: research, restoration, integration and diffusion. They are important and present aspects in my way of creating. They define a methodology, a pattern that repeats itself, a collection of found fragments combining my passions. Each material requires a personalized treatment.
My neighborhood, its streets and its corners, is my source of inspiration, my particular archaeological site where I make my daily surveys and where I always find something interesting.
In this excavation, the different layers are mixed with each other, where the ancient strata appear in the modern levels. As it happens in life, everything is mixed, everything comes together, all of our experiences fuse to create something new, without renouncing to the past. »

Opening 20 May 2016 at 20.00′
Jee Hye Kwon at Popey Loves Olive
Jee Hye Kwon (South Korea) Artist Statement:
« Inspired by both organic forms and architectures, especially buildings that are under construction, all the details and elements that go into making a building are beautiful—including the reinforcing rod, ferroconcrete, and “skeletal” wood beams—but in the best work, spirituality is also an important component.
I use geometry and structural forces to suggest a power that shapes our emotional lives. Incorporated are also cellular constructions that illustrate a biological nexus, making the connection between a prodigious industry with the designs of nature.
Lastly, explicit variations in size and shape promote feelings of movement and organic growth.
Using classic goldsmith techniques, each piece of work is meticulously fabricated and every cell is hand soldered. My goal is an attempt to express the density and complexity of human experiences through different perspectives of architectural space, while maintaining a sense of lightness, flexibility, and transparency. »

It was inspired by the jewelry exchange inProject01 that held in Joya 2013. From 23/04/2014 – 30/06/2014, the project evolved in five solo exhibitions of Greek artists and one group exhibition of thirty five International artists. « The Origin of Symmetry » « In this work, I explore architecture influenced by the avant-garde art movements of Cubism & Constructivism that later influenced trends as Bauhaus & Destijl movement. I design jewelry that assembles in an abstracted form, creating a multitude of viewpoints plus a multitude of applications. Originally what leads me in making innovative forms is that I am interested in the reflection of the viewer. The collection is made of gold-platted bronze, rhodium-platted bronze and oxidized silver. Bronze is cut, fold and soldered to express the three dimensions. Oxidized silver chain is used to present the bronze sculptures. »

« Deconstructing the Cube » and the « Cities In Dust » :  « After I studied the austere geometry of the formal, my work led me into something different: The concept of Deconstruction. I started by deconstructing the cube (2014) .For me, deconstruction is not simply the fragmentation of the structured form, but the dematerialization of the material itself. What at the end of the process seem like a solid base, are the results of both: controlled tempering and the unexpected outcomes of experimentation with the fusion technique. Finally, the white color of the metal symbolizes the dynamics of a new beginning. »

“The after Joya Effect” is an Exhibition that took place at Popeye loves Olive – Art Space. It was inspired by the jewelry exchange in Project01 that held in Joya-Barcelona Art Jewelry Fair, 2013.
From 23/04/2014 – 30/06/2014, the project evolved in five solo exhibitions of Greek artists and one group exhibition of thirty five International artists. During the the exhibition the public voted for their favorite artist. The winner of “The after Joya Effect” First Edition is Jorge Manilla and his solo exhibition opens on the 17th of April 2015 at 19.00′.
Jorge Manilla
In the past few years, Jorge Manilla has created a personal style of work that is the result of his Mexican background and conceptual education in Europe. In his work, Manilla often manipulates a wide array of materials to make sense of the intricate and painful relationship people have with religion and the concept of the body.
Currently, he is simultaneously working as a tutor at Alchimia International School of Contemporary Jewellery in Florence Italy, as a teacher and a PhD researcher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp and of course as a professional Artist.
With this Exhibition, Manilla seeks to find the morphology of the ideas and explore how far he can go with the characteristics of the material during his creative process. How do thoughts arrive, what constructs them, what is their inspiration and how do they transform into material.
Jorge Manilla is interested in creating a confrontation between aesthetics and emotions, to investigate the body: visible, psychological or physical and to create very interesting jewelry as they are objects conceived from the human body.
Beyond the limits II, will show a selection of pieces made in the last 5 years by the visual artist and jeweler, created from the confrontation between the aesthetic and the emotional, from which the author claims to investigate and discover that dark side of humanity, which, in most of the cases, leads to destruction and to the brutality, either psychological or physical.
