Contemporary jewelry exhibition inside   Munich Jewellery Week  (7–10 March 2018)

Popeye loves Olive  Art Space hosts an exhibition platform during Munich Jewellery Week by inviting a group of 14 Greek artists to meet the Mexican artist Jorge Manilla and to develop a joint project on Hidden Curriculum, Identity and Proxemics.

 » Hidden Curriculum*
The Hidden curriculum consists of teaching items which are not officially intended and developed by school and educational system. The educational authorities use the concepts of “hidden curriculum” and “invisible curriculum” to explain teachings and attitudes influenced by these implicit factors (Alavi, Abdollahi and Ahmadi, 2008).
With the intention to explore behaviors, perspectives and attitudes, that the participants adopt during their learning process, in an independent way outside of an institution.
For this exhibition we have decided to take the idea of a Hidden Curriculum and explore in a free but very careful way, issues like gender roles, morals, social class, stereotypes, cultural expectations and personal language.
According to the Austrian artist and architect Hundertwasser, we have five layers of skin. From the innermost to the furthest from the centre: Epidermis, Clothes, Houses, Identity and Earth. Each layer (skin) defines and interacts with the whole human entity.
According to Proxemics, we arrange objects and ourselves in relation to space as it makes us feel more or less comfortable. Individuals naturally maintain a separation that relates to environmental and cultural factors but also to social and interpersonal situations. One could say that proxemics is separated in Intimate, Personal, Social and Public Space/Skins. Moreover, all layers of Space/Skins interact, affect and define each other.
Most importantly, it should be underlined; the above studies claim that Identity is created by social interplay.
According to history, Jewelry serves as a primary means of conveying cultural values. Traditionally, jewels were seen as sacred and precious; however, from the beginning of the 20th century, jewelry has started to be objectified. Jewelry as a result of all human social interactions becomes a product of non-verbal communication.
The process, through which a piece of jewelry is created, is totally connected with the cultural and social background of each jewelry artist. From the selection of materials to the final product, it is needed that all different possibilities and perspectives of this act to be explored.
On the other hand, the viewer interacts both with the maker and the wearer of a piece of jewelry; as jewelry narrates stories and communicates feelings and Identities. 
By comparing fourteen Greek jewelry artists’ work in opposition to that of a Mexican artist and educator; this exhibition seeks to collect information on how hidden curriculum, proxemics and identity are expressed through jewelry.
What kind of space occupies the work of each artist? What kind of skin it represents? «

“The after Joya Effect” is an Exhibition that took place for the first time at Popeye loves Olive – Art Space, in 2014, in the historical center of Athens that aimed to the interaction and the transformation of individuality to collaboration, diversity to unification and exchange to sharing. This year, is the 4th edition.
37 Selected Artists from 20 different countries are called to participate in the project with the work shown in Joya Barcelona, Jewelry Art Fair, the previous year. During the event, the public will vote for their favorite artist, who will be invited for a Solo exhibition at Popeye loves Olive – Art Space the following year!

Contemporary jewelry meets the Athenian audience in a 4-day art event with international participations.

For a second year in a row, Athens Jewelry Week opens its doors to welcome its guests. The objective of this new and dynamic institution is to present to the Greek audience the trends and the rich diversity of contemporary art jewelry, as they have been evolving in Greece and abroad.

In the framework of the international jewelry scene, the organization constitutes the Greek presence on the world map of equivalent art events with an ever increasing interest. AJW 2017 covers four days of exhibitions, lectures and workshops, highlighting contemporary jewelry creators, their art and their authentic work.

The central exhibition titled “Art + Jewelry: Intersecting Spaces” is hosted this year by the Benaki Museum (Pireos Annexe) and it aims to present the exceptional work of 48 selected artists. The influential German jewelry maker Peter Bauhuis, invited as a guest artist, will honor the event with his presence, by exhibiting his work in the main exhibition hall and by opening the lectures program.

AJW 2017 also includes 5 group exhibitions that will take places in various venues around Athens, lectures and seminars. The closing of the event will be marked by the awards ceremony. Awards will be given by international institutions/entities that are active in the contemporary jewelry field.

Athens Jewelry Week – organized by Anticlastics, a group of contemporary jewelry creators – aims, among other things, at introducing the art of contemporary jewelry to the broader public. It is addressed to artists and art aficionados of all ages and backgrounds, but mostly to all those who love contemporary art jewelry and want to learn more about it. Because -as the poet W.B. Yeats would say- « The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper ».

Popeye Loves Olive – Art Space presents, for the first time in Greece the Romanian jewelry artist Raluca Buzura. Using porcelain as a medium, the artist is creating three-dimensional jewelry, combining the organic forms with the elements of nature.

About the artist:

I attended the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, department ceramic-glass-metal, and then, from 2007,
I followed master in the same section.
During the studies, my works were in the installation area, participating in various projects and exhibitions. Since 2009, main focus becomes contemporary jewelry design.
My interest in jewelry may also come from the fact that this area has not been given much attention. Frequently, people use to see it only as an over plus brought to the human body, that has a value depending on the material used. Therefore, it was also a challenge to change viewer’s angle and to reveal an alternative, and more precisely that jewelry can be considered a work of art in its own right, having an artistic understanding, concept and message that can cover a wide range of fields. I continued to work by maintaining a preference for ceramic materials, due to the transformation of the material from one state to another: once acquired a certain shape, it can’t return to what it was before.
I like to combine seemingly fragile ceramic material with metal hardness or the warmth of a fabric, then to submit the form to compositional experiments that create the most expressive side of my creations. My work is a translation in porcelain of my personal experiences, trying to obliterate these traces during the process by simplifying the boundaries between real and abstract, in a swirl of colors and lines waterfalls from which are foreseen flashes of gold. The result of these experiences I like to think that is a legacy, a proof of my existence that reflects on the society, making it if not better, at least more beautiful and trying to rekindle the gap between public and art, by presenting a variety of aesthetic shapes and ideas that could remove it from the serial area.

« The Urban Archaeology includes four aspects: research, restoration, integration and diffusion. They are important and present aspects in my way of creating. They define a methodology, a pattern that repeats itself, a collection of found fragments combining my passions. Each material requires a personalized treatment.
My neighborhood, its streets and its corners, is my source of inspiration, my particular archaeological site where I make my daily surveys and where I always find something interesting.
In this excavation, the different layers are mixed with each other, where the ancient strata appear in the modern levels. As it happens in life, everything is mixed, everything comes together, all of our experiences fuse to create something new, without renouncing to the past. »

The jewelry designer Jee Hye Kwon, winner of the public award of the exhibition « The After Joya Effect II – 6000 Fragments / The Floating Islands » @ Popeye loves Olive – Art Space, comes from New York in order to present her collections of recent years.

 Jee Hye Kwon (South Korea) Artist Statement:
« Inspired by both organic forms and architectures, especially buildings that are under construction, all the details and elements that go into making a building are beautiful—including the reinforcing rod, ferroconcrete, and “skeletal” wood beams—but in the best work, spirituality is also an important component.
I use geometry and structural forces to suggest a power that shapes our emotional lives. Incorporated are also cellular constructions that illustrate a biological nexus, making the connection between a prodigious industry with the designs of nature.
Lastly, explicit variations in size and shape promote feelings of movement and organic growth.
Using classic goldsmith techniques, each piece of work is meticulously fabricated and every cell is hand soldered. My goal is an attempt to express the density and complexity of human experiences through different perspectives of architectural space, while maintaining a sense of lightness, flexibility, and transparency. »

Two jewelry artists share a common space to tell their own story.
Two sensitive worlds, full of creatures and secrets,
hidden behind Gili’s small emotional machines and Anna’s unconventional forms.

ANNA KRÓL – Poland
In 2010 she graduated the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow on the Faculty of Graphic Arts.
During her studies she began the cooperation with the Deco Echo company, where she now holds the position of jewellery designer.
She was taking part in many international artistic events like Messe Munchen International Inhorgenta, Joya Barcelona – Joyería Contemporanea, Autor Targ de Bijuterie Contemporana in Bucharest and Legnica Jewellery Festival – Silver.
Main areas of her work are painting, drawing, art-graphics and jewelry design. »I have no clearly defined motto of creativity. I feel it gives me freedom in the creation process. I spontaneously follow the impulses, observe the occurrences which are close to me and sometimes I feel like the inspirations and ideas are looking for me – I just need to read them and introduce into my work.«

GILI DOLINER – Israel
In 2012, she graduated from the department of Jewelry Design in Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, Tel Aviv, Israel. She participated in an artist workshop in jewelry making with the guidance of Hans Stofer, the head of the Department of Jewelry Making in Royal College of Art, GB.
In 2014 she did Artist in residence, at Comme Il Faut, Tel aviv, Israel and in 2011 an internship in Miuz Company in Perm, Russia.
She participared in numerous exhibitions worldwide such as:
« A dark spark of light », Alliages gallery, Lille, France, JOYA, International Art Jewelry Fair, Barcelona, Spain., The Legacy Award, Alliages gallery, during Joya, Barcelona, Spain, « Of Nature And Nomads », The Adventures of, Berlin, Germany, « The Materials, from which Words are Made », with cooperation of « Harretz » Newspaper, Israel, the Exhibition of the Jewelry Design Department in « Shenkar », College of Engineering and Design, as a fresh graduated student, Israel, Jovella – the professional international Jewelry Exhibition, Israel and the Exhibition of the Jewelry Design Department in « Shenkar » College of Engineering and Design as a selected third year student, Israel.
“Sometimes the magic lies in the details and the places which are hidden at first sight, in order to find it we have to keep our eyes wide open and ask questions, beauty is everywhere.
The unknown is a big inspiration for me.”
