Snapshot – photography project with Diana Laires:
Words cannot say much about jewellery. You have to see, feel and wear the pieces on the body. You have to live with them. Only then, the pleasure of the thought and made, of the formulated and fabulated with ideas, desires and matters, can irradiate fascination.
What should remain is the joy and the desire to understand and wear these pieces of jewellery as symbols of your own personality. /Jens-Rudiger Lorenzen (adapted) in Contemporary Jewelry, Stuttgart, 1989

»The exhibition “Fragmenting Matter” is the first body of work the artist will exhibit in Portugal. The viewer will have the opportunity to experience a range of pieces spanning from those made during her Master´s studies in Art Jewellery in Germany, to the development of more recent works.
Her general interest in the division of things—of earth, people, elements, processes and the spaces which define their beginnings and endings—have driven her to explore different ways of approaching and working materials.

Tracing spaces that provoke separation and facilitate unions, Patricia questions the material, fragmenting it and uniting it, creating intervals that could just as easily liberate as find new restrictions.
Fragmenting and reconstructing have been her process and the foundation of her research; she is always conscious that one cannot speak of separation without speaking of union.  »

REVERSO - Claude Schmitz: Morphing

REVERSO - Claude Schmitz

(Claude Schmitz Brooch: Pink fruits, 2014 Gold, pink opal)

If discrete classical elements of the physical-material world, such as gold, stone, and patina, were to be synonymous with the works of the classical period, nothing would be more dreary than their continuous use. In the context of jewellery design, the references inherent in the elements’ characteristics and meanings become instantly legible, yet do not remain rooted in the classical realm.
« Claude Schmitz manipulates and works materials, thus referencing tradition – not without a certain irony – while never wholly releasing us into the ambiguity of randomness. All alterations, modifications and manipulations are placed in a temporal context, but they never represent a linear environment. Nature – inorganic and organic – is not self-referential, but grows in the hands of Claude Schmitz into its apposite worldly form. » Dietmar Tanterl, artist (Munich)

Manuel Vilhena : Miss Amelia

A Galeria Reverso “Miss Amelia”, de Manuel Vilhena. 29 Março 2014

« Miss Amelia is a story about a girl in strange and curious lands. The story develops through a period of seven days and is basically a voyage. During this voyage, Amelia meets many people and has conversations with them. (Within these conversations lie my working philosophical principles). This story gave rise to jewels that represent characters in the plot and, subsequently, the jewels themselves created deviations and new pathways for the story to unfold. As such, jewels and story created each other.
There are several main characters in this story, besides Amelia herself.
The Bird, which is not specifically, yet intuitively an eagle is recurrent as a background idea only to fully come alive in the end of the story.
The flightpath of this bird (the real one from where the inspiration for the character takesform) served as a basis for the graphic aspect of the Jewels (brooches). »  Manuel Vilhena, in Miss Amelia, 2012
«
The jewels are made of iron and antique coral beads, that come from a necklace given to the artist by his grandmother and kept lovingly for more than thirty years.

Deep down, all is connected. Naturally.
An intimate and nostalgic work that invites the viewer to enter a metaphorical land that, in the end, could become a bit of his own world.
The story is, of course, absolutely true! «   Manuel Vilhena, 2014

EXPO ‘Statements from Another Place’ – Galeria Reverso, Lisbon (Portugal) – 11 Juin-27 Juill. 2012

Per Suntum, Kaori Juzu, Castello Hansen : Statements from Another Place

« To those who wonder -,
There is no underlying theme, as such, for this exhibition.
We have no project and we do not raise questions about, or make ironic comment on jewellery, and there are no other issues or other inferior subjects to look for.
It’s plain, just jewellery.
Perhaps a radical statement nowadays, maybe it’s also just plain.
What we do share is the passion for the media, the will to face technically challenging work and to sacrifice our time to achieve the goal – jewelry. No short cuts.
If I were to introduce Per Suntum I would say that Per is a brilliant jeweler and a true Master in the crafts.Take your time and let his pieces speak. The effort will be payed back generously.
Kaori Juzu makes « impossible » master enameled pieces with shapes, signs and symbols carried within, from her native culture in Japan.
Castello
» To me jewelry is a highly condensed media for communication, not unlike poetry.It.s a travel trough something small into something larger of a different nature, ethereal if you like ». » Castello Hansen

EXPO ‘Claude Schmitz: Fraction ()’ – Galeria Reverso, Lisbon (PT) – 19 Avril-25 Mai 2012

Claude Schmitz : Fraction ()

Reverso(Claude Schmitz  Brooch: Red Leaves 2011 – Silver, lacquer)

It would be easy to draw parallels between the different aspects of Claude Schmitz’s oeuvre. This could be a generally ingenious exercise, aiming to make sense of his artistic practice, pay homage to its creator, and present the public with material for discussion. However, this is not the intention. If there were no fractures in the work, it could not be part of a whole – and the whole, in turn, could not relate either to itself or to the work of other artists. While Claude Schmitz’s work is meant to be a part of the general discussion, it is no less the result of his self-reflection, which primarily manifests itself in the execution. What would art be if we neglect execution, if we abandon the quest for function? It would be reduced to mere ‘built objects’, entirely devoid of meaning.

By titling his pieces, the artist shows an intention to differentiate them. However, he could also have a different intention in mind, provided that one does not lose sight of the totality. Claude Schmitz titles his works by referencing former transformations of form and text, whose conceptual programme requires the wearer to take a stance and become involved, or engaged, on a certain level, either actively or passively, yet remaining below the surface. Anyone observing his easy manipulation of traditional materials might think his work is the product of craftsmanship alone, but this is not the whole story. Nothing escapes logic, which is analogous to a complex equation and can, in much the same way as a mathematical formula, be beautiful.  Dietmar Tanterl, artist (Munich)
