EXPO ‘JEX – Jewelry by Petra Zimmermann’ – MAK, Vienna (AT) – 20 Fevr.-20 Mai 2013

J E X – Jewelry Exhibition - Jewelry by Petra Zimmermann

Wed, 20.02.2013–Mon, 20.05.2013 – MAK Metal Study Collection

JEX - Petra Zimmermann
Petra Zimmermann’s jewelry objects are forthright, sensuous, and opulent. Her early works already reveal an artistic strategy she has continued to pursue ever since: an allusive confrontation of provided material and individually designed plastic forms. However, the objects produced in this way avail of more than just their decorative function; Zimmermann’s works are far more “thought impulses” bringing up aesthetic questions of appeal, value and the transitoriness of beauty. They impress as subtle works of art that cause the conventional barriers between design, the applied arts and fine arts to falter.
Following on from the series of rings and bracelets she has been producing since 1998, another strand of work has emerged since 2002, figurative brooches based on cuttings from the print media. While the rings and bracelets are defined by reflections of glamour associated with jewelry, the brooches meanwhile manifest Zimmermann’s interest shifting onto the representation of the human body in the media. Her most recent works show Zimmermann extending her thematic range with images of design and architectural objects, also floral motifs.
The exhibition is presenting the first overall survey of the artist’s oeuvre with around 100 exhibits—created between 1997 and 2012. Some pieces are being displayed on perforated lacquered plinths designed especially for the exhibition—a reference to Josef Hoffmann’s lattice objects and the tradition of the Wiener Werkstätte.
A section of the exhibition is installed as a “Reader’s Corner,” consisting of two armchairs (based on a design by Frederick J. Kiesler, 1933), and a book shelf with jewelry publications. The selection includes Zimmermann monographs and exhibition catalogues on international trends in contemporary jewelry from the nineteen-seventies until today that have had a fundamental formative influence on the concept of Autorenschmuck—jewelry as an individually creative art—and on the discourse in this sphere: a chance for the visitor to gain information on a field of contemporary jewelry that is generally unfamiliar to the public.
Petra Zimmermann, born in Graz in 1975, studied sculpture at the Vienna University of Applied Arts. In 2010 she won the Eligius Schmuck-Preis (jewelry prize) of the Federal Land of Salzburg, in 2011 the International Cominelli Award. Petra Zimmermann lives and works in Vienna.

SOPHIE HANAGARTH : IRONS and TRAPS

« From Vulcain and his anvil to chained Prometheus with his iron ring, wrought iron jewelry can be seen as a radical way of imagining ornaments, as pure, rough jewels ».

- Until 17 April 2013www.galerievundv.at

2013 IRONS and TRAPS, Galerie V, Wien-

« Shifted Relations »

Galerie V - Sonntag 25.11.2012 Margit Hart - Fotografie als Schmuck - die Ausstellung "Shifted Relations" (im Bild vier Exponate, Broschen, Fotos auf Dibond) ist noch bis 3. Dezember 2012 am Bauernmarkt 19, Wien 1010 zu sehen.

Galerie V&V presents the exhibition « Shifted Relations“ – showing the work of Margit Hart - and Enter The Picture! – photos by Andreas Waldschütz

(During the whole evening of the “Schmucknacht” (6 NOV) pictures of the visitors are taken and simultaneously projected onto a large oval. Changing snapshots of the coming and going, conversations and encounters are to be seen on this “giant imaginary brooch”. These photos are partly blended with the original images Margit Hart is using for her jewels. Instant prints can be taken along by the visitors. A selection of the photos will be published at the gallery’s website after the event. )

The photographs selected for « Shifted Relations » emphasize the peculiar in the inconspicuous and small. The formats the artists have chosen and their selection of detail reinforce this focus.
Placing photographs on the human body as ornaments leads into a different dimension, opening up a new perspective on and engagement with the medium of photography. Wearing photographs on the body as pieces of jewelry affords both the wearers and those who regard this ornamentation a new way of making the pictures their own. Moving between environments, they continually take on new referential meanings. As wearers of this jewelry, we are thus actively involved in displacements of context.
The small format displaces the proportions as well; the splinters of reality the pictures capture are perceived in new ways, realities blur, undergo transformation, become something else. Jewelry is worn in different situations, in everyday life, far removed from galleries and museums—engendering manifold connotations and a wealth of interrelations we had not considered before.
Margit Hart‘s works turn the likeness, the photograph as such, into a treasure, if we want to use that term. No further adornments are necessary to create an ornament.  (« Eyes On« )

Nikolay Sardamov: Intersections

« This newest body of work consists of brooches, pendants, rings and earrings. I use the circle as a basic component and put together three-dimensional forms with six different circle sizes. These forms are built symmetrically, starting from a center and adding and arranging the components in different angles to form clusters and layers. The resulting shape is a rigid meshwork, where the cube can be recognized as the main organizing form.
Building the forms was like a game for exploring variations. I used the same number of components to put together forms with different characteristics: pattern, density and size. The pieces are first built up in wax and then cast in one piece in silver or gold. » Nikolay Sardamov

FAULTLINES -  Susanne Hammer

Eröffnung: Donnerstag 24. Mai 2012, 19 Uhr

Bead necklaces 2011-12: V&V Gallery has decided to put over 30 of her most recent pieces on display, tracking Susanne Hammer‘s layered and complex inspirations and transformations of the simple bead.

EXPO 'Faultlines' - Gallery V&V, Wien (AT) - 25 Mai-15 Juill. 2012 dans Autriche (AT)

« In geology, a fault line (crack, displacement or disruption) is a line of breakage where two rocks shift against each other. Picking up on my work with metal chains, which also revolved around disruption and deconstruction followed by reconstruction in an altered shape, with ‘fault lines’ I have brought a new angle to the classic sequencing of beads. Sections of threaded wooden beads are stiffened with synthetic resin and then cut in such a manner that the original material is exposed again yet, at the same time, the sequence is reconstructed according to a different rationale, with clearly visible breaks and shifts. Susanne Hammer 2012″

Susanne Hammer is one of the most important jewelry artists in Austria. Her powerfully conceptual works place her on the edge of fine arts. The artist treats traditional pieces in a critical, ironic way, so raising questions about the general meaning and function of jewelry
