EXCHANGE-BIJOU 2 – Carlos SILVA – Tests and Experiments

Carlos SILVA

Here are some « experiments », as an « appetizer » ! ;-)

« “A subject that is beautiful in itself gives no suggestion to the artist. It lacks imperfection.” – Oscar Wilde
In our daily lives we come across many elements that hold a hidden beauty.
I feel I am rarely attracted by the immediate beauty of nature. It is in its minor flaws, irregularities and asymmetries I find true expression.
In my work I create jewelry that can translate this seemingly random nature. I use many organic shapes, and use techniques which allow me to replicate these unique shapes, their natural formations and imperfections, because therein lies their true beauty. »

Snapshot - REVERSO

Snapshot – photography project with Diana Laires:
Words cannot say much about jewellery. You have to see, feel and wear the pieces on the body. You have to live with them. Only then, the pleasure of the thought and made, of the formulated and fabulated with ideas, desires and matters, can irradiate fascination.
What should remain is the joy and the desire to understand and wear these pieces of jewellery as symbols of your own personality. /Jens-Rudiger Lorenzen (adapted) in Contemporary Jewelry, Stuttgart, 1989

»The exhibition “Fragmenting Matter” is the first body of work the artist will exhibit in Portugal. The viewer will have the opportunity to experience a range of pieces spanning from those made during her Master´s studies in Art Jewellery in Germany, to the development of more recent works.
Her general interest in the division of things—of earth, people, elements, processes and the spaces which define their beginnings and endings—have driven her to explore different ways of approaching and working materials.

Tracing spaces that provoke separation and facilitate unions, Patricia questions the material, fragmenting it and uniting it, creating intervals that could just as easily liberate as find new restrictions.
Fragmenting and reconstructing have been her process and the foundation of her research; she is always conscious that one cannot speak of separation without speaking of union.  »

« I enjoy details found in architecture, rubble, cranes, structures and pipes.
All those elements that are part of the cityscape.
Through jewellery, I have discovered the possibility of building my own worlds which carry stories, messages, feelings and fantasies inside of them.
Working with reduced scale, make me feel like I’m inside the pieces I build…..

EXPO ‘Joies a Part’ – Galeria Silvestre, Tarragona (ES) – 15-26 Nov. 2014

Joies a Part : Portuguese collective

Opening of the Gallery Silvestre with a collective of Portuguese jewelers : Beatriz Faustino, Carlos Silva, Gabriela Borges Coelho, Inês Telles, Inês Nunes, Marília Maria Mira, Olga Noronha, Telma Simões.

opening  15th November, 12.30h
The exhibition runs until 26th November 2014

Tarragona. "Joies a part" Exhibition at Galeria Silvestre. 15-26 Nov 2014(collar Telma Simoes)

EXPO ‘Claude Schmitz : Morphing’ – Galeria Reverso, Lisbon (PT) – 9-31 Oct. 2014

REVERSO - Claude Schmitz: Morphing

REVERSO - Claude Schmitz

(Claude Schmitz Brooch: Pink fruits, 2014 Gold, pink opal)

If discrete classical elements of the physical-material world, such as gold, stone, and patina, were to be synonymous with the works of the classical period, nothing would be more dreary than their continuous use. In the context of jewellery design, the references inherent in the elements’ characteristics and meanings become instantly legible, yet do not remain rooted in the classical realm.
« Claude Schmitz manipulates and works materials, thus referencing tradition – not without a certain irony – while never wholly releasing us into the ambiguity of randomness. All alterations, modifications and manipulations are placed in a temporal context, but they never represent a linear environment. Nature – inorganic and organic – is not self-referential, but grows in the hands of Claude Schmitz into its apposite worldly form. » Dietmar Tanterl, artist (Munich)
