Selection 4 SCHMUCK 2016 : Jana Machatova

Jana Machatova « Where are you from? »

Congrats to all the artists who made the SCHMUCK 2016 list, on show at the Handwerksmesse  during #munichjewelleryweek  24/02–1/03/2016

« In my new collection, ‘Where are you from?’, I continue working with memories. I tried to show my experience with the political system and social situation from my childhood. Formal kisses between politicians without love, children in political organisations, unified living… this all has left imprints on our personalities. I tried to set traditional ornament, the beauty of a kiss and the cuteness of cookie cutters in contrast to the terrible period and symbols of communism. These jewellery pieces should not be body decorations. They are meant to be a memento, an expression of opinion. »

« Contemporary jewellery – fine art, craft or design? “There are a lot of questions of where contemporary jewellery is going now, the direction it is going in, if the body is needed for it to work or not,” says Katerina Vorlova, the 27-year-old Czech contemporary jewellery designer and fine art graduate….
When considering Vorlova’s work it becomes clear that jewellery doesn’t need the body to come to life; part of Vorlova’s diploma collection hangs in a Prague gallery because it is too fragile to be wearable. The objects are made of plaster and hang on a string made of cotton. Vorlova continued to dip and re-dip the string in plaster until the objects got bigger and bigger. “The process is important for me as anything could happen. These objects can break easily as there is always some thought concerning losing material, breaking it and about its fragility.”
It’s sculptures or rather objects somehow connected to the body that Vorlova is creating and with that she continues to pose questions surrounding contemporary jewellery with the process being more relevant than finding answers. » (sleek-Mag)

Kristýna Španihelová  studied under the guidance of professor Karol Weisslechner at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in the atelier of Metal and Jewellery where she is now working on her doctorate. She took part in academic internship programmes in the jewellery atelier at the  Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (CZ) and studied design at the Academy in Ljubljana (SLO). In her theoretical and visual work she deals with feminine nature in connection with materiality and alchemy. Her works not only received various prizes (design competition Rings in Water 2007, Slovak jewellery competition Slovenský šperk 2005,2006…) but are on display in her home country and abroad as well.

Kristýna Španihelová presents a collection of bone jewellery from the cycle Život [i.e. Life] ANIMA. In her series of jewellery Kristýna primarily deals with the growth and development of feminine nature and principle.

Anima combines in itself the deeper and rationally imperceptible mystery of life. Carl Gustav Jung dealt with the topic of Anima in his work « The Idea of Redemption in Alchemy » and the author drew her inspiration from his theories as well. Jewellery from the cycle Life ANIMA are made of bleached bones which complement the carved-out silver lace work, synthetic pearls, gold foil, pyrites, coral and beads.

EXPO ‘Into the Unknown’ – Galeria CIN CIN, Bratislava (Slovakia) – 3-26 Avril 2013

Viktoria Münzker : Into the Unknown

Viktoria Münzker

Solo exhibition and book presentation of Bratislava’s born slovak-austrian artist.

The recently finished exhibition Into the Unknown has moved from Vienna’s V&V Galerie for contemporary jewellery to Bratislava’s Galeria Cin Cin.
The exhibition shows a selection of jewellery from the recent period. The unexplored depths of the sea fascinates Viktoria Münzker. She investigates and materializes her ideas in the long-lasting, not-yet-ending collection with the title “Into the Unknown” and “Unknown Waters”.
“Everything is possible, nothing is true. The deeper the unknown, the more intoxicating the world is. The inspiration’s floating in weightless state, it never stands still. By movements of the water pulled back and forth – a solid bottom does not exist.”

Schmuck 2013 – EXPO ‘Five Men’ – Tschechische Zentrum, Munich (DE) – 6 mars-5 Avril 2013

Five Men – Zeitgenössischer Schmuck

Tschechisches Zentrum – 6.3.- 5.4.,

during SCHMUCK : "Five Men" – Zeitgenössischer Schmuck Tschechisches Zentrum

L’exposition «Cinq hommes» présente l’actualité bijoux de cinq artistes tchèques : Pavel Filip, Rene Hora, Pavel Opocensky, Martin Pouzar, Jiri Sibor

Im Rahmen der Internationalen Handwerkermesse (6.-12.3.). Reihe Schmuck 2013.

Martin Pouzar, 1977 Jablonec nad Nisou

Bety K. Majerníková was one of the most outstanding performers of the young Slovak jewelry generation that came on the scene since 2000. Her uniqueness was in her specific spontaneous art language which changed according to the topic that she worked with, the selection and processing of the materials that she used, in what she expressed through her jewelry, and also according to the way that she was able to present it to the public. Sometimes very striking, open and funny and a minute later meditative, inquiring, mysterious and fragile. She could always surprise and was able to grow. Her small intense compositions were her personal commentary about the world around, but also about herself. Her solitary pieces excelled by very delicate soft form, progressive plastic material as well as by a special transparency through which they exposed their interior. And always by a small detail that sparkles them.

Bety studied by prof. Karol Weisslechner at the University of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava in the Metal and Jewellery Studio. In addition, she completed study visits in the glasswork studio at the University of Sunderland (UK) and also a study of jewelry and cutting gemstones at FH Idar-Oberstein (D). After graduating, she worked as an assistant in the Metal and Jewellery Studio, and in 2007 she earned a doctorate (as the first among women jewelers) for work dealing with the origin of artwork in a global society. Bety K. Majerníková established gallery Nuée, co-organized Schmuck Wander and Šperk Stret. She was a singer in group Noisecut. She exhibited her works in Slovakia as well as abroad and holds several prices (Kruhy na vode 2005, Designblok 2008).
