The Sweet Perfume of Decay
Sometimes I see beauty in things that other people find strange or are even repulsed by. I become fascinated when there is something you do not want to see and the feeling you get when you do not want to look at some- thing, yet you still do. My jewellery deals with the tension that lies between attraction and repulsion. I take seemingly inappropriate materials, making ordinary and familiar objects seem extraordinary and unfamiliar.
In the 18th century many new breeds of animals and plants were discovered and it was the main era of cabinets of curiosities. People collected rarities because it gave them the feeling of being in the presence of something ex- traordinary and marvellous. The cabinets of curiosities were not meant to sympathize with the creatures on dis- play, only marvel over their oddity. In a world where not many new and exotic breeds are discovered I use dead creatures in my pieces to evoke wonder. The creatures are transformed and reborn; given a new life as objects of astonishment.”  Märta Mattsson

« During this year I have been working on new pieces where I use wings from butterflies, cicadas and moths. The idea of mimicry and transforming the wings to look like new species of animal appeals to me. By assembling and building new bodies out of the wings I can create mysterious creatures that uses the esthetic qualities of the wings but without making them too pretty and flower like.
As well as exploring the idea of creating new species I am also interested in the symmetry of the wings and how I can explore this in a new way. I find inspiration in images from the Rorschach test. The inkblot test is a method of psychological evaluation. Psychologists use this test in an attempt to examine the personality characteristics and emotional functioning of their patients. This test is often employed in diagnosing underlying thought disorders and differentiating psychotic from non-psychotic thinking in cases where the patient is reluctant to openly admit to psychotic thinking. »

 [palindrome] is a word, phrase, number or other sequence of symbols or elements, whose meaning may be interpreted the same way in either forward or reverse direction.
Many believe that symmetrical objects have an inner harmony, and value them for this. In nature, symmetry is approximate. For example, plant leaves, while considered symmetric, rarely match up exactly when folded in half. If there is no such thing as perfect symmetry in nature, can we find perfection in imperfections? What happens when two artists decide to mirror their own work but also reflect and bounce off each other’s visual language? Tanel Veenre and Märta Mattsson have been working on a set of exhibitions based on palindromes during 2014. In the exhibition, Solos – Never Odd or Even, Part III at Platina they have developed two new series of work, Heartology and Phantoms. Their new pieces has been created under an echo of two minds exploring the contradictory meanings of symmetry in nature and life

PHANTOMS

A shadow is relative darkness caused by light rays being intercepted by an opaque body. It is an indication that something has been present and it can appear like a ghostlike figure. I am facinated by the human mind and the duality that excist within people. The light side and the dark side and all the grey areas inbetween and within the human mind is what thrives me as an artist. Shadows are like a distorted palindrome of oneself… It is what hides behind the surface.

HEARTOLOGY
Heart is an archetype, distilled shape full of meanings and myths. Usually most perfect symmetrical form, ultimate palindrome. I have been driven by hearts for a long time, but for this exhibition I decided to get clear – I have to carve a heart every day to get into kind of mental state where I am led mainly by my intuition. I didn’t want to construct or combine, it should be more like a purifying process. – Tanel Veenre

GULDRUSH

”GULDRUSH” is Daniela Hedman‘s and Agnes Larsson’s first exhibition together. Working and living in Stockholm, Sweden, but both with a connection to the swedish island Gotland where the artists now will show their work for the first time.
The exhibition will take place deep inside an underground rock shelter located in the industrial city of Slite. Slite offers Gotland’s unique nature and at the same time a pure industrial environment. Inspired by this place the artists have created the exhibition ”GULDRUSH”. In connection with the exhibition the artists will hold a workshop for locals and visitors on the island, introducing thinking- and artistic processes related to contemporary jewellery.The project is a collaboration between Daniela Hedman, agnes Larsson and Slite Utvecklig.
Daniela Hedman‘s work relates to her fundamental interest with the human body. She is fascinated by the body’s ongoing physical presence and what impact it has on our spirituality. Her jewellery revolves around the relationship between the object and the body, and she is constantly searching for different connections between the two of them.
In deep investigations of natural materials Agnes Larsson is working with opposites to create tensions in the material. Her work is often inspired by the powerful forces that surround us in life such as heaviness and lightness, living and dead. The core of her work lies in the material which rather than telling a truth is focusing on forming a paradox.

I drew lines and I wrote
”As wire they grew out of the two dimensional.
I did not know about these rooms”.
I dip paper in porcelain while thinking of piles of paper that affect me.
Because I have discovered the qualities of porcelain and want to find out more.
White and ground.
Fragile and innocent.
Brittle.
So close to breaking.
As life is frail and close.
As life is beautiful. As my life is beautiful.
Next to the darkness.
I make a construction, as a protection for the fragile.
With a line that does not cover but coexists.
As the shadow.
Then, when time has gone and the fragile breaks,
something remains. »

I have strong impact of Chinese fine classical paintings and calligraphy since I was a little.  I used lines to create forms and place my feelings of nature. 
For me, the Chinese calligraphy gives the lines diverse visual possible and spiritual power. The line has stimulated me to discover the sequence and express the emotions from the reality.

Rasmus Larson, MA – “Pasifistic Contemplations”
The medal, a military grading symbol which is commonly used as a confirmation that marks accomplishments – You’ve done well. What happens when it’s forced to use its purpose but in contradiction tell about the opposite, and take the role to display lives that are forced to fade away in an elimination steeped in destructive and lost conditions. Morphed together with IUCN’s The Red List and thoughts around life form’s fates and circumstances.
The materials used are recycled Tin-soldiers, taken from a time when naïve brutal battles were executed on wall-to-wall carpets without knowledge of the real world’s equal brutality. It takes four soldiers to make one medal. Four if they have rifles and are marching.
Acrylic paintings as portraits of lives. The text, to create context and cause. And the ribbon, made out of caution tape and protective tape – which according to the label on the package says: for all kind of caution and protection. They have become my pacifistic contemplations.

I want to frame a person. And by doing that I want that the person has its own secrets and stories. The wearer becomes a storyteller through the frames and creates a strong relationship between the wearer and the jewelry. At the same time hundreds of times repeated frame parts formulates a wall around head, protecting its wearer. I look into the fragmental and the constantly changing in what we remember. I work with thoughts of souvenirs as materialized memories.
In metal I search for a language that speaks of transformation. I cast objects to rework them,  seeking the boundary between the recognizable and the abstract. Memory helps the eye to whole broken forms. We want to remember. My work revolves around memories as souvenirs, how we carry with us our memories.

The jewellery we wear indicates who we are, or want to be. Engagement rings, medals and inherited jewellery all convey a message of identity, personal history and social affiliation. But jewellery is also an art form in its own right, and the artists like to reflect on the concept of jewellery and to energetically test its limits. In terms of materials, modern jewellery encompasses everything from precious metals to plastic, wood, textiles, paper and photography.

From the Coolest Corner, produced by Norway’s National Museum in Oslo, is a presentation of Nordic contemporary jewellery today. Many of the participating artists belong to a young generation whose works have garnered wide international attention since the turn of the century. The exhibition last until September 21, 2014.

The exhibition is produced by the National Museum, Oslo, and the Röhsska Museum is the only Swedish venue on its tour. The showing of From the Coolest Corner at the Röhsska Museum forms the starting point for New Adventures in Jewellery, an international programme of exhibitions, lectures and other events within the context of contemporary jewellery, taking place in Gothenburg and Western Sweden during the spring, summer and autumn of 2014.

Participate in Mah Rana´s Photo Project Meanings and Attachments
Wear a piece of jewellery when visiting the museum and take part in UK jewellery artist Mah Rana’s project Meanings and Attachments. The participants are photographed individually and are asked to write down the story of the piece of jewellery they wear. Mah Rana’s mobile photo studio is installed at the Röhsska Museum on Tuesday, June 3, from 4pm to 7pm, in connection to the opening of From the Coolest Corner – Nordic Jewellery. All ages are welcome to the photography session, but children under 18 must have parental permission to take part. A selection of images from Meanings and Attachments will be displayed at the Röhsska Museum during the summer.

Portable Pleasures: When Intimacy becomes Public

« The series of jewels, Portable Pleasures seeks to challenge the notions of intimacy and the public realm, two aspects that are involved in the act of wearing jewellery in society.

In my Master’s project, I investigate how jewellery, intended as an ‘apparatus’ of communication and disorientation, offer both to the wearer and viewer, to challenge social conventions in regards to the feminine and the masculine. What happens when a shape reminds us of an intimate area of the human body and is displaced to the public sphere, in the form of a jewel?

The act of decorating the body with these jewels leaves the viewer with no choice but to cross the boundary of the wearer’s intimacy. Can this act create a new order of connectivity and communication between the wearer of a jewellery piece and the viewer that is forced to confront it ? »

The American artist Amy Tavern’s work often consists of memories, processed and transformed. Reinterpreted by the viewer they become platforms for discussions and new ideas.
I make abstract thoughts concrete and tangible and further alter the memory itself beyond what happens naturally. The pieces are based on memories that are specific to me but the moments and feelings are truly universal. Kim Buck, Tore Svensson and Karin Seufert are three of the most prominent artists of the modern jewellery scene. With experience from long careers they stay in the frontline and continue to develop the genre with an impressive creativity and craftsmanship. The exhibition KGB was shown for the first time in Copenhagen and after the show in Gothenburg it will open at Gallery Martina Dempf in Berlin.
