SODAmore Summer 2011 : Contemporary Art Jewellery Exhibition

Once more SODA brings together a group of contemporary artists who use different colours, materials and themes to exhibit their work for the SODAmore exhibition this summer.

“SODAmore Summer 2011: Contemporary Art Jewellery Exhibition,” which was also organized last year, will host many new international artists. This show will challenge you to forget the old contours and styles you were once used to, to be swiftly replaced by deserving contemporary art.

Including approximately 70 pieces, the exhibition will present prominent artists of Contemporary Art Jewellery which has become an acclaimed area of interest for international art collectors who use various materials like glass, metal, rubber, plexiglass, wood, paper, plastic and ceramic.

The exhibition hosts artists Zwetelina Alexieva, Ara Kuo, Ritsuko Ogura, Selen Özus, Lina Peterson, Nikolay Sardamov, Michihiro Sato, Salima Thakker, Flora Vagi and Tanel Veenre. Some rings are made from hairbrushes while some bracelets are carved out of cardboard; ultimately the exhibit will surprise you and make you question the definition of “precious” jewellery.

As part of the SODAwise discussion series, SODA continues to bring together creative souls from different disciplines and careers to share and discuss various topics.

SODA will be entertained by the presence of Margit Hart and Fritz Maierhofer – two prominent names in Contemporary Art Jewellery – on Tuesday, June 14 at 18:00. Our two main speakers from Austria will discuss and share their knowledge and experiences and present examples of their artwork in the discussion titled “Nature and Structure”.

This discussion was prepared with the valuable contributions of the two pioneers of contemporary art jewellery in Turkey, Ela Cindoruk and Nazan Pak.

A graduate of State University of New York and someone who has participated in many important exhibitons and fairs, what matters most for Margit Hart is that people can wear her jewelry art. Her primary concern resides not so much in creating an item of jewelry or merely depicting forms and shapes than in exploring the relationship – and interplay – between the human body, jewelry and the environment.

Fritz Maierhofer’s work exists in a world that is vibrant and diverse. He is not the kind of artist who, having come across a successful idea, gladly replicates it ad infinitum. Improving and developing his work since the 1950’s, he is constantly discovering new materials, absorbing new inspiration into his work.

Özay Emert draws inspiration from her Turkish cultural heritage. As a starting point she focused on objects used by Sufi dervishes during their meditation. Sufism is a mystical movement that emerged from Islam seeking divine love.
« I have chosen the meditation tools because of their aesthetic value. I think our preoccupation with material rather than spiritual things has made us neglect to appreciate the beauty of religion. »
